TUA MASS REWATCH 2.0!

As some of you may recall, last summer there was an Umbrella Academy mass rewatch in which a bunch of us watched one episode a day and made posts about it.

Mikayla 'Mika' Hargreeves formerly known as 'Number Eight' was one of the lucky forty-three children to be taken in by eccentric billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves.

Growing up, Mika wasn't so different from her 'siblings' as she also possesed power quite like no other. She was the embodiment of beauty, one that could easily match Aphrodite. Her captivating eyes draw you in, while her voice, as melodic as the sea, enchants all who hear it. She was a dangerous allure, a perilous water to dive into.

Mikayla Hargreeves was a Siren.

"Come on Ben! We wouldn't want to be late for the mission!" Mika called, hurriedly putting her socks on.

As she was rushing out her bedroom door to the lobby, something inside her was screaming 'Do not go, little one. For this mission is a dangerous game.'

Pushing the taunting voices in the back of her head, she brushed off the uneasiness, and focused on the excitement of what's about to come.

“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” (In Defence Of The Fangirl)

Girls just wanna have fun, but they can't, can they? Not when they are criticised for everything they do and everything they like.

“What? You like One direction? That's so girly”. 

“I bet you don't even know the rules of football”

Why is being ‘girly’ childish? Why are we lying if we like ‘boyish’ things? All girls liking the same type of clothing, toys, colour, accessories, hobbies and makeup is just impossible. People are different and have varied personalities, interests and preferences. Yet girls have been pushed to be ‘girly’ for their formative years, only to be criticised and called childish for liking the same things that they had no choice but to delve into to avoid harsh judgement. It is a paradox of sorts, there is no winning. In the popular 1985 film ‘The Breakfast Club’ Allison addresses the deep sexism in our society, saying “Well, if you say you haven't, you're a prude. If you say you have, you're a slut. It's a trap. You want to but you can't, and when you do you wish you didn't, right?”. 

Along with the false illusion of having a choice, there is also a cruel and very obvious double standard at play when it comes to talking about interests. A common and apparent example of this is the way that the media portrays sports fans compared to boy band fans. When a girl likes or is a fan of things that are targeted to them, they are criticised for it. It's impressive how society, the media and men and even women can think up a whole dictionary of biassed and judgemental words just to bring teenage girls down. They are called fanatics, obsessive, stalkerish, deluded, crazy and psychopathic and then expect teenage girls to be confident in themselves.

When girls put up posters and other boy-band paraphernalia, they are obsessive. But when a boy or even a fully grown man puts up posters of their favourite sport teams, have bedsheets branded with the logo of their favourite football club, and wears the uniform of their favourite sportsman every. single. day. They are merely showing their support and love of a sport, that's just boys being boys right?. Why isnt that seen as obsessive and crazy, why can they get away with making their interests their entire personalities when their interests are just as bad or even worse.

 In the 60’s, there was ‘BeatleMania’, then there was ‘Bieber Fever’ in the 2010’s. These terms are condescending and patronising, this constant demeaning of the female gender as the whole was amplified and spread, and in turn the steady rise of worldwide phenomenon that is “I’m not like other girls” that hoards of pubescent teens wear as a badge of honour. With the rise of the internet and in turn the creation of ‘cringe culture’ every aspect of the teenage girl has been picked apart and analysed to the point that they can't be seen as anything but ‘cringe’ by anyone. Girls will change their preferences, styles, humour, interests, hobbies and pretty much everything about themselves to not be seen as a dumb, pink-wearing, feminine girl. These changes are a form of adaptive preference. Adaptive preferences are preferences that are “formed in unconscious response to oppression” (Walsh). It's almost as if our entire self worth as women is centred around a mediocre and unfairly and unjustly privileged gender. 

Women, men and everyone else's gender is irrelevant in the way anyone should be treated. No one should be criticised for their interests and things they like. Everyone should be able to enjoy the things that bring them happiness without fear of criticism or shame.
