You ever watch something that you just KNOW future scholars are gonna be studying because it perfectly captures the zeitgeist of the time in which it was made? The last two episodes of Puppet History season 5 are gonna be written about in so many papers on like “early 21st century climate anxiety” and “artistic responses to the 2020s pandemic”.

List 5 topics you can talk about for an hour without preparing any material
Tagged by @ginevralinton thank you!!!
How I Met Your Mother - I love this show so much and I don’t believe it deserves to be forgotten about just because it had a shit ending. It was created almost perfectly
Watership Down - this book has the best worldbuilding I have ever experienced and in this essay I will tell you exactly why-
The Outsiders - there’s a reason why every school forces its students to read this book, it’s a masterpiece and the characters are all amazing
Little Shop Of Horrors (1986) - this is the best movie musical. This isn’t up for debate. It uses stylisation so well and its lack of restraint makes it work so much better. The musical itself is so brilliantly written and don’t even get me started on the story it’s self oh my goodness I love this movie
Futurama - now this is a great show, anyone who’s watched it will probably agree, but the way it creates the future is so brilliant. It’s the perfect world for this kind of show with this type of comedy to be set in. And all the small details that never get addressed just in the background make the year 3000 what it is
None of these are my current hyperfixation but all of these I hold with so much respect that it would be rude not to talk at length about them
No pressure tags: @spineless-lobster @spaghettiwithnachos13 @krispyy-lotol @justarandombrit @or-not-2b---i-dont-know @ablatheringblatherskite @literary-lesbian @ticcywhaleshark @atleasttheyvegotstars @nocturnal-cryptid and anyone else who would like to join :)
(Also you don’t have to give explanations, I just did because I wanted to)

📩 Simblr question of the day: Choose as many sims/ocs as you'd like for this question, What's something INCREDIBLY obscure and/or out-of-pocket about your sim/oc? Something that nobody (fellow sims and/or your followers and mutuals) knows 👀 (This could be things about their social skills, physicality and/or birth defects, or it could be something they vaguely remember, a dream they had that actually predicted the future, etc etc... whatever you come up with)
( p.p.s freely share this SQOTD around, anon or not, and use the # SQOTD ~ 💛 )
Thank you, Anon (who I sneakily suspect to be @eljeebee forwarding the SQOTD Anon 😉) and @nocturnalazure for the same ask (on the same day 😊). ❤️
Here's a list of very random facts about my student bunch and two bonus characters. Some things may be known to some already, but I think most can be considered obscure. It is, of course, an essay. Because I'm simply never a woman of few words, especially when it comes to blabbing about my characters. 😊
James wrote his first original song at age 8. It was titled "Parent-Free World", and sometimes he still hums it absentmindedly. He bites his nails when he's nervous and the only place he "self-services" is in the shower because that's the least messy.
Sarah has been considering breast reduction surgery because she has back pain often. She and James developed "twin language" as toddlers and still remember and use some words.
Daniel secretly hoped he would have siblings, but it wasn't on the cards. This made him closer to James and Sarah, though. He's on the verge of failing university. Not because he's not smart enough but because the lectures bore him. His learning style is more visual and kinesthetic, and the University caters more towards auditory learners.
Jill sometimes remembers smidges of a past she can't really place and is convinced these are memories from a previous life. She knows all the songs from High School Musical by heart, but she doesn't tell a soul about this because she's embarrassed.
Seth is extremely intelligent and is a member of Mensa. He doesn't want to be cocky, so he hardly mentions it. He avidly plays D&D online, and his character, a sorcerer, is named Zeno Morningsteam.
Sadie is a wonderful singer and has a great musical ear, but it bothers her that she doesn't know how to play an instrument. She has a tiny birthmark somewhere on her body shaped like a heart (when seen up close). Her parents' marriage is going through stormy weather, but they hide this from their children (for now).
Rachel does yoga every day. She secretly liked it when Sadie spent every night with James because, as much as she loves Sadie, sharing her personal space with someone every night is very demanding for her. She's written seven chapters to a fantasy story, but this is a well-kept secret. If she tells someone about it, they may want to read it! 😱
Finn has a nut allergy. This was discovered when he was three years old and had to be rushed to hospital after sneaking a taste of Nutella. After his hospitalisation, "know what you eat" became a huge topic in the Richardson household, and this is actually what inspired Jill to want to become a chef. Since lots of food contains traces of nuts, Finn is very careful what he eats and always checks the packaging.
***Bonus characters (since they're fresh on everyone's mind)***
Joshua actually hasn't sworn off religion like his sister Martha has. He still has faith but is finding his own way. His crush on Joel is slowly fading, but he's happy about this. He hopes to find love soon but knows this is difficult in a small town. He ordered a free information booklet from The Rainbow Alliance entitled "Boys." which very openly and very detailed (in drawings) explains anything and everything boys who like boys need to know. It left him extremely flustered, but it's also his favourite thing to read now. 🤫
Morgan named Jonah after the love of her life, Jonas, who died in a car crash many years ago. Morgan has a subscription to OMGYES. Aside from writing, she has another creative passion: playing the violin. She's very good at it too. She's not looking for a relationship right now, life is too busy as it is.

Hello hello Mr.Haitch !! I hope the Haitch household is doing great ^^
So, recently one of my friend’s university is all over the news, because the granddaughter of an insanely popular actor enrolled at that university.
My friend isn’t particularly thrilled about it, because that university has a very difficult entrance exam, but the celebrity’s granddaughter got in without clearing that exam.
The university claims that she has a very impressive portfolio and doesn’t need to clear the exam. But we all know that’s just bs.
So far the university board hasn’t been very subtle about their open bias towards her. Even the staff.
What is your opinion on this? Do you think people coming from influential backgrounds shouldn’t be shown such blatant favoritism? Considering how hard some people tried to get accepted at that university and afford the tuition.
I've got mixed feelings about entrance exams, and assessments in general.
Permit me to dust off my 'education is a public good' Stetson for a moment.
Tumblr media
Much better.
Okay - for me it's all down to what you're trying to measure and why. Is the point of the exam for students to gauge the extent of their understanding, for their teachers, for awarding bodies, for future employers? And if so why?
My employer doesn't care that I got top grades in my essays on existentialism and freedom, or that I completely fucked up my exam on the pre-socratics (I objected to a question).
Is it so the university can brag that x number of students achieved a high grade? Is it to assess the quality of the teaching? What if a class' impact is more personal and profound, rather than imparting particular skills that can be measured by conventional assessment?
I know the answer to all of these questions, mostly, but the answers are - to me - unsatisfying. Learning is a lifelong pursuit with milestones, absolutely, but no real defined end. Any end that might be imposed is artificial at best, dishonest at worst. The number of people I've seen waltz into complex, nuanced debates saying "well I studied X at level y" believing it makes them an expert. I also believe the value of education has absolutely nothing to do with employability or transferrable skills (I will hiss at anyone that uses that word near me). Society cannot function without an educated populace, especially its political systems. People can and should be as informed as possible at all times, through whatever methods and by whatever means are most effective for them.
This all applies to entrance exams: it strikes me that it's all about marketing and prestige. Universities want the best students so they can SAY they have the best students, in order to attract more.of the best students. The reasons why fall broadly under, like I said, prestige and marketing - but there's also financial incentives beyond recruitment. Students from affluent backgrounds are, on average, more successful academically - largely as a reflection of the ease with which they can access high quality schooling, tutoring, additional resources, and their parents are likely to be educated as well.
While it might seem like a meritocratic system (if you're smart enough you'll make the cut) but it's another form of elitism and classism, just sneaky and underhanded. Typically this is underlined by the manner of assessment, with a written examination being the standard. That's not to say it's impossible for someone outside of the upper crust to get through, just that the odds are slim. Slim by design.
Anywho.
If it were a perfectly meritocratic system I'd be more upset about people cheating the system, and processes being overridden by nepotism. Instead all they've done is reveal the whole thing is a sham.
For anyone interested in this topic I'd recommend checking out The Tyranny of Merit by Michael Sandel.

Hi hello, I would like to hear many things about inoculation theory…. 🥺
OMG I'M SO EXCITED. i'm gonna add a read-more bc i'm about to info dump the FATTEST mini-essay anyone has ever seen. THANK YOU for taking interest 😭💖👉👈
okay so, inoculation theory in social psychology sort of piggybacks off the idea of inoculations in medicine.
if you've ever gotten a vaccine, you've experienced an inoculation! the way vaccines work is to expose your body to a harmless variant of or piece of a pathogen (something that causes illness) (this is also a very generalized statement so please understand that i'm not a doctor or anything 😭). this tricks your body into thinking you are fully infected with the pathogen, and then your body creates antibodies! the antibodies help recognize future contact with the pathogen in order to more quickly and effectively squash it out.
inoculation theory in psychology is super similar to this! it is often used to create plans for fighting propaganda and misinformation. specifically, it is great for keeping opinions one already has, and preventing persuasion away from those opinions.
in research, this is generally achieved in the following way: the participant has their set stance on a topic. the researcher then presents to the participant a weak counterargument to the stance. the counterargument should be strong enough for the participant to become defensive, but weak enough so as not to change the opinion of the participant. the participant will then think of a refute to the counterargument. since the counterargument was weak, it should be fairly simple for the participant to come up with their refutation. however, it lays the foundation for the participant to defend against stronger counterarguments in the future.
as an example, imagine someone has the stance that vaccines help to prevent infections. a weak counterargument to this would be "well, but people still get sick after getting vaccinated. this means vaccines don't work." this counterargument is fairly easy to refute, especially because it doesn't even play by science's definition of what a vaccine is. the participant may think, "well, they don't prevent ALL sickness. they just decrease the likelihood of infection after exposure. you can still get sick; it is just less likely with a vaccine." now the participant has defended their stance once, and they know better how to defend their stance in the future.
in the future, they may be presented with a stronger argument, but the participant is more likely to stick with their original stance, as they have practiced defending it.
inoculation theory has GREAT potential to help limit the spread of misinformation and to protect people from logical fallacies. a huge use of inoculation theory has been in schools, with programs against smoking, vaping, drugs (NOT the DARE program), etc. students are exposed to lots of weak arguments FOR the consumption of the dangerous substances (it makes you feel good, we're young so we don't get damaged as much from this, everyone who is cool is doing this, you're a pussy if you DON'T do this, etc). they're taught how to defend against those weak arguments. and, if the program is good, it succeeds in its end goal, which is to keep kids from using the said substance.
in the end, the goal of inoculation theory is strengthen someone against being persuaded; and this can mean persuasion in general! the more comfortable someone is synthesizing critical thought to defend their stances, the more they use those thought processes. over time this strengthens the person's ability to critically think about their own opinions. in most PRACTICAL uses however, the inoculation is only meant to prevent persuasion regarding a specific topic.
in my personal, non-researcher opinion, i think inoculation theory could also be bastardized in order to PUSH minsinfo and propaganda. i think it's a similar thought process the ways in which propaganda is spread. with a cursory glance, i can't find anything to back that up, so i'll just say that i'm probably talking out of my own ass for that bit LOL.
i do hope you enjoyed this little info-dump and that it was at least slightly interesting!!! social psychology is SO fucking cool and has a lot to offer. i think almost anyone could find something they were really interested in in this field (:
OH LAST THING. there is a game that was used to showcase inoculation theory, and it's called Bad News. it's been praised to hell and back since it's release, so if you're further interested, i sincerely recommend trying it out!!
thanks again for asking !!! srsly means so much 😭💖

I was wondering if you had any college application essay writing tips. Those personal questions are kicking my ass fr
Well, the first and most important thing to remember about these is: they want to know you can write.
Not great, sweeping essays that will get you an A in a 4th year course or anything; just that you're not going to be in over your head in the program you're applying for. Nobody wins if you go to college and flunk out because you couldn't do the work.
Stick with simple, solid techniques like the five-part essay plan. Make your thesis clear, and organise your argument like you would for any academic essay. The fact that the topic is you isn't as important as how you present the topic.
Second, and a bit trickier to figure out, is the topic. Again, they want to know they're not wasting time on you, but it's really, really hard to think of yourself objectively as a topic for discussion.
Before you start writing, give yourself time to think. That's a very important step here, because you are the source and the research. Talk to friends and family as well, because they probably notice things you don't about yourself.
Then focus on three areas:
Achievements. What have you done that makes you a good candidate for this program? Why do you deserve to attend this institution? Here we're thinking awards, volunteering, jobs, or skills related to what you want to do. This is where you get to brag a little. Tell them why they should take you seriously. Don't feel too bad if these things don't feel like huge accomplishments; you're just starting out, and they know that.
Relationships. Think of the people you are doing this for, and the people who inspire you. Do you look up to a mentor in your field? Have a family member who is your biggest cheerleader? Want to set an example for the people coming after you? Connections are important, because they'll be your support network through your education, and also because they demonstrate your ability to connect with the people around you. Are you a team player? A natural leader? How do you relate to your positive relationships, and how will you build new ones moving forward? It's really difficult to get through school all by yourself, so show your audience that you will be part of the community and build the connections you need for success.
Goals. Where is this program leading you? What will you do with the skills you learn? They want to know you'll do something meaningful with what they teach you, so tell them what you hope to achieve. A bit of idealism isn't a bad idea here. Who do you hope to help with what you learn? How will this program make your life better? Remember that this isn't a set in stone destination, it's a hope for where your education might lead you. Talk about where you'd like to be, and how you plan to get there. Make your audience feel like they can contribute to your success.
Once you have concrete ideas about these areas of your life, you can answer most of the questions they present you with.
Remember that admissions staff want you there: they can't run a school without students. They also want to know who you are and what you're about, so they can tell if you're a good fit for their school. Try to be sincere in your answers: passion and connection show in your writing, whether you want them to or not, and your sincerity won't go unnoticed. We write best about things we care about, so focus on topics you feel passionate about and things you're proud of.
If the questions ask about challenges you've faced, put a positive spin on them. How did you overcome those challenges? What did you learn from the experience? How can this program help you to overcome future challenges? Personally, I don't like to bring up this sort of thing unless I'm asked directly, but that's up to you.
Finally, remember that not every school you apply for will be a good fit for you. Maybe your passion is something they don't have a good program for. Maybe you are really into theory, but they focus more on applied science. Don't be afraid to shop around, and don't be afraid to be flexible if you find what you want doesn't line up with what a school can offer. You'll find where you fit, but sometimes to takes some work to get there.

So I recently watched a streamer play a game called Vaudeville, which is a murder mystery where the NPCs are all run by AI so that you can use your microphone to question the NPCs and have them actually respond to you. Which, as much as I dislike AI, did sound like an interesting concept that was at least worth looking into.
And the thing is, the AI actually was pretty impressive. It did a pretty decent job of responding to the streamer, while maintaining somewhat of a distinct personality for each character. One of the female characters even scolded the streamer for trying to ask some sexually harassing questions. (He was mostly trying to see what the AI would do more than anything else.) The characters also did a decent job at trying to get back on track if the streamer ever went on a tangent so the game would actually progress.
I’ve never felt so much dread about the future of video games.
Because here’s the thing: It’s a novelty now, but at face value? The game was so, so boring and probably frustrating to play. The characters spoke like they’re students trying to pad their essay to make it longer. They talked in circles, such as when the streamer went to the police chief to ask him for more details about the case, and all the police chief would do is ask him what he knew about the case. Even when they were coherent and on topic, the tone was fairly flat and the dialogue just wasn’t good, y’know? Like the game is never going to spout off an absolute banger of a line like “Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. Their silence is your answer.” or “What is better – to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”
AI NPCs makes for a mediocre game.
But the thing is, designing games this way probably saves a ton of money—no need to pay writers or voice actors—and probably saves a lot of time as well—no need to spend time recording or editing the audio, no need to iron out all the story details. And a lot of consumers might not really care as long as the combat’s good.
But I don’t want to play a bunch of games with mediocre storytelling.

This is good.

✩ Stories and Students✩ AI and Writing✩
Tumblr media
Simply put, I do not think AI writing has yet reached the point of truly jeopardizing researchers, academics, or authors. The writing style of AI on a large scale tends to be dry, and even elementary, beyond that it sounds like it is trying too hard to make its point with its choice of language. Alongside this, it does not vet its sources as a human would be able to, rather it scrubs through the internet. A human can manage to understand that these are not all reliable sources, and can use them to interpret, a task that AI seems to struggle with thus far.
AI is also not at the point where it seems to be coming for any fantasy author’s job. The stories are dry and basic, they follow a similar plot of an elementary schooler reflecting what they have seen in Disney movies, rather than creating any sort of new concepts. It also cannot seem to keep track of itself within these basic plots. It seems to lose the point and topic at hand as it continues to try and spin a narrative. However, on a basic level, AI is still corrupting the future of writing.
Access that students have to this AI is chipping away at basic writing skills. Any job actually ever, at least in a more professional setting will require, at the least, basic writing skills. However, students are now able to lean on AI as an unneeded crutch. In using AI, students do not learn these basic skills, instead relying on the mediocrity of AI, though unreliable and often wrong. AI is taking away the opportunity for students to take the time and grow with their writing, the open access is too tempting, and too easy, for struggling students to use and abuse.
How many writers are we losing to AI? People, students in particular, want to cut corners, they want the easiest and the most efficient ways of doing things, but how many great essays have gone unwritten, how many research papers have been flagged as AI when they could have been published with a bit of effort? Is the want for AI to make our lives easier actually making it easier, or is it making us worse at things that we have spent so long mastering and integrating into our lives and culture?

I was a Somerton fan and Patron of his (I fell for one of his poor crying pledge drives), and I was incredibly disappointed to find out that he's a plagiarist, bullshitter and scam artist. Some of his claims in the past had made my brain itch, like when he got the Disney Gay Days fact wrong, or when a lot of his queer Hollywood film scholarship reminded me of The Celluloid Closet, which I'd seen years ago.
I did used to find it slightly suspicious that he could crank out such long, slick, well-researched videos at such a dizzying pace, which I chalked up to him being so thoroughly supported by a large production team. I also wondered why he was spending so much time rehashing what I had assumed was well-known queer Hollywood history, especially since he covered a lot of niche topics that aren't that well known outside of academic circles.
As a former film student, I recognize that there is value in making queer film scholarship accessible to new and young audiences on the platforms of new media. Hell, I even did I course of the future of video media! But accessibility was never James' goal. If it were, he would have cited his sources properly. I daresay, doing the research it takes to steal from so many great queer resources is a lot of effort, and the difference between plagiarism and research is in the citation. Collecting all these great LGBTQ+ viewpoints on pop culture is a valuable and commendable undertaking... provided you don't pass off their work as your own.
I just watched James Somerton's second "measured" apology video, and I still don't think he understands what he did wrong. In his new video, he doesn't go into any detail about why plagiarism is wrong, and gets all persnickety at the contemporary implication that he might have pilfered the premise of The Final Girl (which, as an aside, is the exact same tone and language he took when deflecting the initial plagiarism accusations). When he says he wants to "do the work", which would presumably have him creating video essays and documentaries of the level of academic rigor he was pretending to have... even if I were to believe he wanted to, I don't think he can. I don't think he's capable.
I'm really disappointed in James Somerton. I know he's a talentless, money-grubbing hack, but if he were acting in good faith, there would still be a value in what he does. It takes a lot of work to do the amount of research it took to plagiarize all those other creators. But there isn't any value in his work. He is a man with nothing to say. I don't believe that he's going to stop stealing because I don't think he can. In the words of Roger Meyer Jr, "if you take away our right to steal other people's ideas, where are they supposed to come from??"
The thing that sticks in my craw is the why of it all. Why is this man trying to make movies if he doesn't care enough about movies to come up with his own? Why make videos about queer history and cinema if he has nothing to add? Honestly, my first thought after watching HBomberguy's video was "what a pity that James only ever speaks in other people's voices. I'd love to hear his someday." But I no longer think he's got one.
i wish i was seeing more from the people who were Somerton Fans before all this cuz like, i feel like we're having an issue where people feel the need to have been less conned than everyone else. like wow look at me i only fell for the grift a little bit. okay congratulations i guess but theres nothing shameful about having been a fan... nobody spends that much effort interrogating the media they consume and if you think you do youre delusional. anyway having been aware of him but not an avid consumer i am so curious how people who were are taking this. is it a big fucking shock to their whole worldview? is it more of a live and learn moment? like its gotta be fucking hard right. idk if it turned out tomorrow that people i trust like abby philosophytube were the worst people ever itd be a weird ass moment u know
