#EveryChildMatters, #AllChildrenmatter is a hashtag to honor Orange Shirt Day, also called National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or National Day of Remembrance, which is observed yearly on September 30 in Canada and the United States.

-Cultural genocide-

Starting around the 1900s, the Canadian and U.S. governments, backed by various catholic and some other christian church groups established residential schools for Indigenous children, forcibly assimilating them into Eurocentric American standards by isolating them from their families and eradicating their languages and cultures. In 1920 in Canada, under the Indian Act, it became law for every Indigenous child to attend a residential school and illegal for them to attend any other educational institution. Similarly, in the U.S. the Indian Civilization Act Fund, the Peace Policy of 1869, and various denominations of the Catholic/Christian Church adopted an Indian boarding school policy with the goal to “Kill the Indian, save the man”. These children were forcibly removed from their families and communities and brought to boarding schools where they were forced to assimilate (cut their hair, abandon traditional clothing, give up their family names and take on English names) and were punished for speaking their languages or practicing cultural beliefs. Very young children were kept from their families for long periods (sometimes over four years) and were taught their cultures were inferior or sinful. In addition to cultural genocide, horrific physical, sexual, and emotional abuse was perpetrated against every child.

-The numbers-

Starting in the 1880s, upwards of 150,000 first nations kids were sent to residential schools across Canada, the last of which closed in 1996. It is estimated that between four and six thousand children were murdered at these schools, and hidden in unmarked graves. Gravesites are continuously being discovered to this day.

Between 1819 and 1969, the U.S. hosted and ran approximately 400 boarding schools. At the time of a 1969 report, 34,605 children were enrolled in Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) boarding schools and 15,450 enrolled in BIA day schools.

After the discovery of unmarked graves at Canadian school sites, the USA started in June 2021 to locate gravesites. The Federal Indian Boarding School initiative has identified both marked and unmarked burial sites at approximately 53 of these schools, and continues to search. We are unsure of the amount of murdered children, but expect the approximate number to grow in both Canada and the USA. A prediction based on enrollment paperwork and other evidence estimates a total of around 25,000 children in Canada and upwards of 40,000 children in the United States that lost their lives at residential boarding schools. EveryChildMatters is often symbolized by wearing an orange shirt or with 2 orange feathers in hair, on clothing, and in artworks.

Been thinking about how Donnie and Leo’s insecurities juxtapose each other.

Donnie is insecure about his place in the family, but confident in who he is outside of it.

Leo is secure about being a part of the family, but thinks he’s nothing outside of it.

I think it’s a very interesting comparison that reflects their respective personalities, Donnie’s “Will all I have to offer be enough?” versus Leo’s “Do I even have anything else to offer?”

i guess it's all building castles in the air about a character who only appears in flashbacks but i don't really get interpretations that claim shou's mom ~abandoned~ him when "lost the equivalent of a nasty custody battle with her supervillain ex husband and went behind his back anyway to at least stay in touch with her kid" feels like the much more obvious conclusion to come to about that whole situation given his dad's line about not "letting" shou see her

anyway i can admit i'm biased because i think shou, 13-year-old who sees himself as a responsible adult, suddenly having to deal with a parent who actually wants to be in his life As A Parent is a hysterical dynamic. he moves in with her like "so what do i owe you for my part of rent" and she's like "shou 1) you are my middle school aged son and 2) i own the house." there's a thematic argument to be made obviously vis a vis mob psycho 100's insistence on showing you genre-typical kids carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders and taking you by the chin and going "look. look. that's a child." but mostly i want to see shou ask his mom how they should revise the chore wheel he used with his adult lackeys to be fair for two people and her mentally screech to a halt and think maybe her plan to give him an allowance in case he wants to see a movie or something is not the biggest issue they need to deal with

Honestly this was SO GOOD because it’s like…. It’s so so true that Steve wants to get married. Like I feel it in my bones that even if his partner is okay with marrying, even if it’s with the girliest girl around, he is the one that spends days and days daydreaming about the wedding, about getting married, about a big house with a garden for the kids. I know the second and third movies really gloss over it horrendously but D1 was very much about abused children escaping their parents and each of the four parents has a different method of "control" over their child.

Maleficent's staring contest is "you will never be as powerful as me unless you do as I say," (aided in part because at this point in canon, Mal's dad was human), so Mal finally "winning" a staring contest was her beating her mother through refusing to give in, and thus Mal's spell triumphed.

Cruella teaching Carlos to be scared of dogs is "the world is too frightening and dangerous and you must stay here," but befriending Dude is the moment he realizes she is absolutely wrong about the world and he would much rather be surrounded by friends than live in fear.

Jafar making Jay steal is because there's no magic and wealth is now the only semblance of power that can be found on the island but also isolation because you can't trust anyone - until Jay wins the MVP trophy and realizes that trusting his friends makes a great difference.

And the EQ reducing Evie's worth to beauty not only references the whole "Fairest of Them All" thing but also magic/knowledge was not a guarantee of power, but 'beauty' was what mattered most and why Snow White survived being poisoned; and yet that fails Evie because Chad is the worst but the one person who encourages her no matter what is the son of a dwarf.
