Leon's lifeline for the past two months has been a chance encounter he met at a bar. At an abandoned payphone in the dead of night, he can only hope his guardian angel picks up his call.

Against every neuron in his brain screaming flight, Leon breathes way too early into the receiver, “Hi?”

The payphone is a cold metal kiss against his ear. The night rain works double time to chill him right through. He’s always had bad luck. Leon never meant for it to go this far. Never meant to let things get so out of hand with you, the angel he ran into at a bar two months ago. 

Something about you just sticks. The quarter he fed into the pay slot did too. He should’ve taken it as a sign to let it go, let the drizzle soaking through his government-issued suit order him straight home from the airport, but the heart’s a heavy burden when it’s empty and besides, it gives him something to dream about.

So Leon stays. Prays you pick up. 

The music was loud the night Leon met you. He’s tried convincing himself you’re an earworm instead. You tick all the boxes, too. He can’t get you out of his head (one). Leon had offered you a drink on a whim. You’d told him his eyes looked like pieces of sky fallen to earth, and maybe it was because you saw home in him that he saw it in you. 

It was probably his own gin and tonic steering him astray. It could’ve been the twinkle in your eye when Leon kissed your knuckles in the red flush of the stoplights streaming in through the front window. But sooner than later, you had him wrapped around your wings. It just felt right with your feet off the ground when he’d hoisted you up under your thighs.

You sang so pretty in his arms. Leon’s postmarked for hell for sure. He’d taken you apart in a quiet back corner, pressed kisses down your eiderdown-soft nape, had the gall to smile at the shiver he brought out in your shoulders. You fit him like a glove. Every sweet gasp of his name that left your lips, Leon had burned into his brain to play on loop (two). 

Leon, Leon, Leon.  

And now, two months later, Leon realizes he’s angry about it. Not because of how outdated that is – seriously, who burns CDs anymore? – but because he didn’t know he was doing it. And that he’d do it for so long. He’d come to depend on the savior of your laugh to pull him through nights he’d spend with moonshine or an emptied magazine in different, more unfortunate circumstances. The memory of your voice put his fear to sleep. It was only a matter of time before Leon was skipping church in favor of taxi cab confessionals, drunk under the passing streetlights. Reciting the silvery lyric of your name under whiskey breath (three) as good as turned him into an acolyte. 

One, two, three rings pass before the line drops. Leon slips in his last quarter and punches in again the 10 digits that haunt his dreams. 

Why should you pick up? Maybe he’d hallucinated you tucking your number into his hand before you’d kissed him goodbye. Your wings could’ve been made out of paper, a false idol of Leon’s desperate invention, a feather dropped into his jean pocket from when he plucked you out of heaven. Of course he’d be the hero of the greatest love story that never was. The longest romance novel never written.

The dial tone stretches skyward. Leon sinks his teeth into his lip, stifles a dying scream to God with an aching throat. He doubts he’d listen. 

Because even after all this time, Leon is impatient. The whole city’s asleep except him. The downpour is knifing into his back and he doesn’t want to wait for the day so he can turn sunshine into sugar; Leon wants to pull the sun into his mouth. All this praying on his knees and he can’t even put his mouth on you, can’t put into use all the practice he’s had saying your name. 

He never even offered you a dance. Some kind of gentleman he is. The president’s bitch at attention and a poor excuse of a prodigal son to boot, standing at this payphone and pretending it’s only rain sliding down his cheeks. 

So when the receiver echoes back his greeting, Leon thinks it’s a cruel test. He’s sullen, tasting bitters again.

“Hello?” it repeats softly, “Leon?”

And it’s you.

Leon gasps your name, clutching the phone to his chest and scrambling to answer back. “You didn’t- is it really you?”

You laugh like tinkling bells, lovelier than he remembers. “You sound just the same.”

“And so do you.” Leon runs an incredulous hand through his hair. “How’d you know it was me?” 

“You started off with a ‘hi’. Normal conversations start with the word ‘hi’ and we’ve never had a normal conversation. It didn’t sound right with your voice.”

You remembered how he sounded. He’d called for you and you’d heard.

“I regret that. I’d like to have one of those with you sometime,” he admits. 

“It’s been a while.”

“You don’t- you don’t have to if you don’t want to.”

“Can I be honest?” you whisper.

Leon holds his breath.

“I forgot to put my name on my number and I thought you’d never call.”

Tomorrow, Leon decides when he asks you to meet him for dinner at the Italian place you’d once told him about, right across the old church and the bar where he’d once met an angel, he’ll tell you he was always going to come back home.

And he hopes you’ll forgive him for being late.

As the final month of the year rolls in, it’s the perfect time to reflect, reset, and make the most out of these last few weeks. Here's your ultimate December Lock-In To-Do List to end the year on a fresh note and prepare for the year ahead!

1. Reflect & Recharge:

Take time to reflect on your year so far—celebrate your wins and learn from the challenges.

Allow yourself to rest and recharge before diving into the new year.

Journal about your experiences and things you’ve learned.

2. Set Intentions for the New Year:

Get clear on what you want to accomplish in 2025—write down your goals and dreams.

Create a vision board or a digital mood board for inspiration.

Set small, achievable steps towards these big goals.

3. Organize & Declutter:

Tidy up your space—whether it’s your room, your study area, or your digital life.

Declutter your belongings, get rid of anything that no longer serves you.

1. DANGER - HOLY SHIT BRO SO FUCKING GOODNSJDN THE BASS? THE RAP? yummy yummy yummy my fav song ITS SO GROOVY. WHEN YEONJUN SAID TOMORROW BY TOGETHER AT THE START ?OMG MOANING. I love the part when, idk what they were saying but the melody in the part ‘something korean, so obsessed’ like I like how it’s a little minor and descends idk how to explain. txt are so good at r&b we love you beomgyu for being the main lyricist on this, he ate it up (the lyrics ‘deeper into me?’ What was…that beomgyu? 🤔🤔🧐…) also I love the little short backing vocal interjections in the pre chorus that ascend and descend they bless my ears

2. Over the moon - over the moon is so good! I love the little sparkles you can hear in the background at the start of the verses it’s so pretty, and I love the ethereal like intro, BEOMGYU STARTING AGAINSJDHD !, bass is good in this and I love the backing vocals they’re so heavenly and the harmonies make me float. Also I just love the lyrics to this song, they’re so pretty and so good for a love song like they’re actually so romantic but not in a cringe way WORD PAINTING TOO ! The over the moooonn over the starrrsss part is so pretty I love soobins falsetto. And also I love the call and response like parts with sookai and taegyu 😩😩 BUT ☹️! Icl I was slightly underwhelmed listening to it the first time, I think I hyped it up too much and the teaser kind of gave away the whole song 😭 it’s way too short 👎 I really wanted some new material, instrumental section maybe, a bridge but it’s lowkey just verse chorus, verse chorus, end. I think there was way more they could have done with this song bc it’s so good IF THEY ADDED JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE IT COULD HAVE BEEN AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE but even without i really love this song so much

3. Forty one winks- INCOMING !!🗣️ chill like r&b, I knew i would love this song !! Sounds like it would have been on the freeze album. This song is very fun and I will be listening to this all the time to make me happy it’s very feel good !! You can kind of hear this little sparkley like thing in the keys sometimes in the background like in over the moon and I love that. I love the adlibs for this song too !! Ooh and the strings in the outro !! Love that

4. Heaven- cute and fun!! I really loved this song more than I expected I would, I love the verses and melodies in the verses 😭😭

5. Resist - resist being this low seems criminal but every single song was too good tbh idk whether to put this is as 4 or 5 or 3 😭. I knew I was going to love this song but omg I didn’t expect the genre! After the beat kicks in it really changes but it’s toooo good I love the guitar chords in the verses at the start of every bar ? and the guitar in the intro and I love the high notes in this song. I love how txt do different styles and genres AND PULL IT OFF they make kpop so fun for me 😭😭😩 plus I just like the rhythms in this song

6. Higher than heaven— I really liked this song more than I expected bc icl I was not much of an early 2010s pop boy band fan back then but I love that txt did that they really suit it. I really love the melodies in the verses so much and even the chorus is fine for me. But I really don’t like when they sing HIGH. HIGH. HIGHHHHH !, that part really kinda annoys my brain sm like it’s kind of so jarring to me 😭😭 I’m sorry it hurts my ears a little but other than that THE SONG IS SO GOOD I LOVE EVERY OTHER PART BESIDES THAT 😭😭 THE BRIDGE WITH KAI AND TAEHYUN IS SO ETHEREAL TOO AND THE BACKING VOCALSSJJDHD!! it’s just that one part for me personally 😭😭

so like…… im a grown woman. so believe me when i say at this point i rly couldnt care to be genuinely bothered by antis. like i will literally just block them lmao. ok yes i did write a whole fic revolving around a comment by an anti KFHDKSJWJEDK but i rly wasnt mad i was just genuinely inspired by what they said.

seeing people say how gray is out of character in 100 yq/has stockholm syndrome are literally missing the entireeeee point of his and juvia’s relationship and its crazy!!

*side note, i think for the sake of helping gray’s character and development, they sacrificed a lot of cool things about juvia and a lot of her individuality which i do not like. but thats a rant for another time. btw do notttt even come for me bc she is literally still by far my fav character lmao*

im probably gonna go on for too long about this but gray’s whole fucking character throughout the whole story from beginning to end is centered around the fact that hes cold and closed off and grumpy and “too cool” and listen im not saying this is fucking rocket science or any type of transcendent literature by any means but i HAVE to point out that hes a fucking ice wizard. like. duh. im sure his character/personality was meant to go along with abilities i mean look at literally EVERYONE else in fairy tail.

ANYWAYS the reason he is this way is because he’s so used to losing all of the people he loves and even worse, hes used to so many people sacrificing themselves for him.

and it traumatizes him!! so many people hes been close to have died and he ultimately always thinks its his fault! lord knows im rusty with ft knowledge but his parents died (cant remember if it was in any type of sacrificial way teehee), Ur sacrifices herself for gray, ultear sacrifices herself for gray, and his dad dies AGAIN (once again, not sure if this was in a sacrificial manner lmao. i kindaaa think it was? maybe? shrug.). but POINT IS! theres a common theme of loved ones dying and/or sacrificing themselves for him. there might even be more people lmao idfk.

so what happens when he meets a girl who has an overwhelming and unwavering and infinite love for him?! he is freaked the fuck out!!! for a couple reasons! 1. he is so used to losing the people that love him and 2. he doesn’t even think hes deserving of any love to this degree!

then what happens? he PUSHES HER AWAY! KEEPS HER AT A DISTANCE!!!! because THATS ALL HE KNOWS!!!!!!!!! yes he has his friends who love him but no one has ever loved him in the way and abundance that JUVIA DOES! so he has to react appropriately! lots of love = lots of keeping her at an arms length!

so when he thinks he loses juvia in their fight with invel, and she comes back, dont we think it would make sense that he finally realizes he should accept his feelings for her? i mean remember when he said he promised her an answer AFTER the war? once again, like gray, pushing things off. and then he almost LOSES HER without ever telling her how he feels! so gray realizes life is short! theres no use in trying to deny ur feelings! these are common themes in like 85% of my gruvia drabbles lmao.

im not even saying that it was love at first sight for him and that gray liked her from the jump. bc i dont think thats true. i think we can finally see outward romantic feelings for juvia right after the tartaros arc, when juvia visits gray at his parents’ grave. but before that, i think juvia was a friend (wellll i feel like after the tenrou island arc he liked her more than a friend, but he didnt really realize how much more) who he cared about, and truly didnt know what to make of her because like i said, hes never known a person to love him so much and actually not die LMAO.

but my point is, juvia is the perfect person to be gray’s romantic partner. she is a person so full of love and so happy to love and she doesnt care who knows it. she is unequivocally herself and she wears her heart on her sleeve to the upmost extent.

it literally only makes sense for his character to end up with her!

u could argue gray doesnt need to end up with anyone at all bc he has his friendsssss and likeeee. sureee. fine. but what fun is that? i personally want to see the scared-of-love grump to find his person. i think, again, thats kind of the point of gray’s character- learning u are worthy of love, accepting love, and learning to love openly.

Mike: Okay, so I guess atp we all know that this guy is just a closeted Homosexual. He tries so hard to hide the fact he's gay, he's failing miserably. And he is VERY confused by his feelings thorwards Will.

Will: Openly gay. I don't have to say anything else. We all know he is yearning for Mike. We all know he always had been.

Lucas: Bi. As a preteen he was kind of simping for a random basketball player. Later in life he realized that might've been a little more than just that.

Dustin: Straight Ally to bi-curious. He is pretty sure he is into girls but he prolly wouldn't say no to trying. ALSO CAN WE PLS APPRECIATE HIS AND SUZIES RELATIONSHIP? Bros live SO FAR away and try EVERYTHING to communicate with each other.

Eleven: I am actually SO TORN. I am 100% she is Asexual. Kissing, cuddling, holding hands, being cheesy is a 100% yes for her. But anything more is gross. Also I am a Lesbian El truther. Cuz Lesbian and Gay pairings are ALWAYS fun (Syd and Stan IANOWT). Suzie: Straight Ally! The sweetest and kindest soul. She will listen to everyone's pains and relationship struggles, sit there akwardly and then yap to cheer them up. She is probably bad with comforting. (Actually I just realized as I'm writing this that Autism makes sense for her! And now I'm HAPPY about that.)

Nancy: Bi panic in person. Her relationship with Steve was merely to fuck around (haha literally.) and be rebellious. Her relationship with Jonathan wad more and really serious. But you are on my blog and therefore you KNOW what I'm gonna scream for. RONANCE. After sorting things out with Jonathan, they both decided to part. She was akward around Steve but only because she started falling for his bestie. And god she loves Robin sm. She was so afraid of getting attached but SUPRISE SUPRISE. She did.

Jonathan: Straight Ally(???) I actually never thought much about him even tho from season 1-3 he was one of my ultimate favs. He just decided to be single for some time after Nancy and him broke up and he's happy about it. He goes back to California (after thinking about it for a long time because he wanted to be there for Will. But after Byler sorted it out he could leave peacefully.) Anyways, he and Argyle just keep vibin, he gets a photography job and maybe eventually after a break another girl.

Argyle: Pan. Oh GOD I LOVE HIM. I just know he and Jonathan did things when they were high. (Jonathan actually told Nancy and apologized like 500 times but she didn't mind a lot). He hooks up with random at times. Not in a bad way. He is a mindful person and makes sure everything is safe and protected. He has a few girlfriends from time to time. Some boyfriends here and there. Just happy to be there! He just wants someone who doesn't care about him being a stoner.

Steve: Bi panic in person #2. This man was convinced he was straight until he met Robin. She talked to much about herself that Steve probably realized at some point that guys are actually kind of hot. And some of his 'idols' where maybe small crushes. I am not OBSESSED with Steddie. But I don't hate them. I don't really care about them. But Steve will be happy, doesn't matter if a girl or guy!

Robin: Canon Lesbian. God I love the way she found out in rebel Robin. And over the time, when she grows closer with all of the party she eventually gets less closed up and pretty loose with the topic of her being a Lesbian. The second person she outed herself to was Nancy (under tears and sobs because she's so in love with her.) And then strangely enough Mike because she noticed the akward pining for Will and decided to talk some sense into him. Her first real crush and gay awakening was Tammy, which is canon. She liked Vicky in a way. It was a complicated in between after she met Nancy. But since she was with Jonathan, she tried to get rid off her thoughts with focusing on Vicky, But as the upside down got worse and she spend much more time with Nancy she was convinced she wanted her more. And luckily these feelings where mutual. Also rip Robin, you would love Chapell Roan and Billie Eillish.

Eddie: I think we all are convinced that he is gay. He cared about Chrissy but didn't know her close enough. He always liked boys and was okay with it. He immediately knew what Robin is and was honestly just vibing. He had a girlfriend (which made him realize he likes boys) and a secret boyfriend before. And once the party is so comfortable and Robin outed herself to all of them he followed to make her feel less akward which leads into everyone outing themselves. Because fruity people attract fruity people.

Vicky: I honestly don't know enough about her atp. I think she's Bi. Or maybe a little confused about all this esp when she met Robin? I like Rovicky. Not more than Ronance, but it's cute and I honestly only want Robin to be happy ):

Joyce: Straight Ally but like the biggest in history. She kissed Karen before (cuz I say so.) She always knew that Will was gay because of the way he interacted with Mike. She is so gentle and careful about it. Educating herself, asking questions if confortable. She just wants to protect. That's why she is also do incredibly nice to Robin, because she knew her parents won't give her unconditional love so someone has to.

Hopper: Straight Ally but very confused about everything. He doesn't get the whole lgbtq thing. But as soon as Will officially outed himself, Hopper made such an effort into educating himself to not say anything wrong. And when El outed herself he spit out a very smart sounding scientific definition and El giggled.

Murray: Gayest character in this show. Bro is like gayer than Will atp. He wanted Alexei. He loved him and sobbed for months straight. Thats it. A miserable sad gay man.

Special Guest: KAREN!!: I am very deep in this fandom since August 2023. ADHD does fun things and made me read too many things. And from all these times on Ao3, Tumblr, Pinterest or the part in Rebel Robin where Robin realized that everyone is just trying to fit into society and be perfect in a way, I've been growing VERY fond of the closeted Lesbian Karen headcanons. She liked girls so much, she know she did. And she decided to not embrace it or even try to. She just adapted into that sad tradwife life and decided to make everyone satisfied. She was very happy when Nancy brought home Robin and Mike brought Will. She is so proud of her children expressing themselves unlike her. Also how tf did she pick Ted? The laziest, stupidest and most gross mf ever???

I've been listening to the After the Fall and Before the Dawn audiobooks, the ones that feature team CFVY and team SSSN in Vacuo, with a few flashbacks to Beacon days.

Some of my thoughts:

While I have read better RWBY fanfic, I thought they were still good books, with some great moments.

I loved the handling of team CFVY, especially Velvet and Yatsuhashi as dedicated partners. Coco and Fox, and Coco and Velvet are great too, and the whole team dynamics as well. They were all fleshed out well.

I'm a bit confused why Mistral is considered more racist against faunus than Atlas. I know there were 'no faunus' signs in Mistral, but I have a vague recollection that it's not the only place with that sort of bigotry. That and the headmaster of Haven in Mistral was a faunus. If it was the worst place in Remnant for faunus, how'd Lionheart end up as headmaster?

I loved the flashbacks that included team RWBY, even if the narrator made Ruby far too squeaky (on the whole the narrator did a good job with everyone though). I just wish there could've been some in Before the Dawn as well as After the Fall.

Sun started out more annoying than I remember him being in the show, which made it satisfying seeing him taken to task for abandoning his team. I am grateful for the help he gave the Belladonnas, but his team certainly have a right to resent him for leaving them. More than once at that, with how he doesn't travel with them to Beacon in Volume 1.

Funniest line for me: Scarlet's POV when hoping Sun doesn't hurt himself by thinking too hard. To be clear: I don't hate Sun. Scarlet being snarky and salty was just fun for me to read.

Fox and Yatsu coming close to torturing information out of Neptune using his fear of water against him made me wince, but it also made sense. Velvet matters so much to them.

It's also kind of funny to me how Sun did what Ruby did in Volume 8 with the message to everyone with a scroll, if on a smaller scale, localised to Vacuo. Which means that Sun is about as famous to Vacuans as Ruby is to Remnant. He also did good with that message, inspiring ordinary citizens to join in the fight against the Crown.

Yatsu saved the day more than anyone, although it was very much a group effort. Having to use his Semblance so much when he hates using it can't have been easy on him.

I do like Sun's growth, and how he finally talked to his team, with the rift being healed (or at least well on the way there).

With the Volume 9 epilogue showing Gillian and Jax Asturias escaping prison, no thanks to Tyrian and Mercury, we definitely haven't seen the last of them. And the thought of their Semblances at Salem's disposal is rather worrying. Not to mention that it'd be so much harder to deal with Jax's Semblance if Yatsu was killed. I'd really rather that didn't happen, he's tied with Velvet for my fav out of team CFVY.

With any Gillian and Jax would both turn on Salem eventually if they think she'd do too much harm to their kingdom, but the problem is getting them to realise the danger.

It's not going to be fun for Jaune to meet a Jackalope Grimm after Volume 9. I mean, by the sounds of it no Grimm are fun to meet, but especially that sort for him after spending so long with Juniper in the Ever After.

- Most, if not all, of her nicknames consist of just, bugs. Moth. Firefly. Bee. Wasp and Hornet are used a lot by the other Heroes (in an endearing way ofc). Beetle is by far everyones (especially Bug's) #1 fav tho (they secretly named her journal "Beetle" but they wont ever admit it)

- Bug got nervous at just the idea of maturing and ae straight-up screamed when they got the first piece for aer

- She is VERY much an avid birdwatcher. They will talk to HOURS about it to Hexalace (Hexalace is TERRIFIED of birds BUT she tries her best to listen anyway)

- Before they ended up apologizing to Gold for being a bitch they started going out of their way to do little things for him- very simple things like finding (or, 'finding', with heavy quotations in some instances.) (Said example scared the shit out of Gold and he was so on edge throughout that whole timeframe)

- They tend to the other Heroes' rambles about their interests a lot and thats how they got into most of their own (ae tinkers with a bit of technology thanks to Gold, in fact. Shut up I'm inserting my headcanons here /silly/lh)

- She eats uncooked spaghetti noodles and LOVES cheese

- Before Hexalace became aer new caretaker ae was bouncing back and forth between staying with the other caretakers (Pentellow and Iris & Cube mostly, VERY rarely Pyrare, only in extreme emergencies because they all learned that Bug did NOT manage very well being in a room with Pyrare (and/or Gold for that matter, as this was VERY pre-apology)

- She's went to a funeral once and made a really bad joke that 'why is everyone wearing grayscale, I thought that was my thing' (they were immediately removed from said funeral, ae didn't really understand why until way later)

- She spells Hexalace's name as 'Hezalace' and REFUSES to spell it any other way, even if someone tries teaching them that it's not a 'Z' it's an 'X'. Hexalace doesn't mind though she knows ae'll grow out of that one

- For some reason, she and Gold ‘share a braincell’ (not literally) very often. Sometimes they'll have very similar reactions as each other to certain things, if not the exact same reaction

- When I say ‘she used to be a major bitch to Gold’, I MEAN IT. Things like “Pyrare only loves you because you succeeded” was thrown at him- they were doing everything they could to try and hurt him. They completely and fully regret the things they said now, though

- [META] Design-wise, her cape used to have a lighter gradient to it- but I removed it because it was barely noticeable

- Ae’s cape in aer Final Stage was only partially the Trees’ decision. Cyan and Tsavorite were the ones who communicated with the Trees to try and convince them to give Bug a cape due to capes commonly being associated with heroes

- She’s a dog person

- When they were first assigned Hexalace as a new caretaker, they were very skittish around her, even going so far as to discreetly slip out of the room whenever Hexalace walked in before she could notice her

- After warming up to Hexalace, she had a bit of an attachment issue to her at first; at one point Hexalace had to leave Bug alone for about 15 minutes to do something urgent, only to come home to a sobbing Bug who thought she'd left her. They've gotten a lot better with that attachment, but they are still working on it

- Her jacket is very stretchy (especially towards the bottom) so that it doesn't hinder her movement

- Sometimes when they wake up they believe for a few seconds that they’re still with Redd. But they quickly realize that they’re really with Hexalace now and the amount of relief they feel every time is immense

- Aer love language is physical touch like hugs and stuff. Ae’ll hold you for hours if you let her

- Most of the time Bug will drag Gold along for an adventure, yeah- but sometimes Gold will convince Bug to just stay put and play a board game. They alternate between one anothers' preferences. Sometimes they do fight over it but it’s fineee /silly

- She has NO idea boundaries exist at first

- Due to still not having the ability to reach the pitch required to speak Herospeak clearly (despite their connection being restored), when they speak Herospeak they have a heavy accent in it. They have to repeat themself a lot

- Back when Bug was still learning how to use aer newfound Hero abilities, Hexalace did try and teach aer how to fly herself. But of course, Hero abilities and actual wings are two completely different things so that didn’t go well, expectedly

- If I had to rate Bug’s mischieviouism on a scale of 1-10, I’d have to say “pick a card, any card! WAIT, THAT’S MY CREDIT CARD!”

- She has nightmares.

- They bounce back from injuries/illnesses pretty quickly. Sometimes they don’t though, and they assume they’re fine after a while and go do something and immediately get hit with Oh Fuck That Feels Bad

it’s funny you just answered a different ask about S&S, because I’ve been mulling one over that I’ve been meaning to drop in your inbox. I listen to S&S on the regular - it’s become one of my fav comfort stories. But I’m always disturbed by Brandon talking about how relieved he is when he finds Eliza 1.0 dying of tuberculosis. I know he cares for her, both emotionally and in the sense of providing excellent care for her at end of life. But I do wonder.

What if she wasn’t dying when he found her? Would he still have loved her and wanted to marry her? Or would her life as a sex worker, her illegitimate child, the drop in her social status, and the fact she was his (then still living) brother’s ex-wife make that a non-starter? After everything that happened, did Brandon harbor some Captain Wentworth-like resentment against Eliza, irrational though it may be? And if he had rescued her and married her, could they have been happy with how much both had changed since they were first in love?

Obviously it’s all conjecture, but I think Brandon would have done for Eliza 1 the same he did for Eliza 2. Bankroll her into a nice cottage in the country and maybe visit on holidays.

First, I want to address that he's "happy" that Eliza is dying. We in Western society are very uncomfortable with death these days and agree to extraordinary measures just to retain life without considering quality of life. What Brandon is saying is that Eliza Brandon had no further chance at quality of life. The relief that he feels that she will die soon is because she's suffered so much and he wants her to find peace:

So altered—so faded—worn down by acute suffering of every kind! hardly could I believe the melancholy and sickly figure before me, to be the remains of the lovely, blooming, healthful girl, on whom I had once doted. What I endured in so beholding her—but I have no right to wound your feelings by attempting to describe it—I have pained you too much already. That she was, to all appearance, in the last stage of a consumption, was—yes, in such a situation it was my greatest comfort. Life could do nothing for her, beyond giving time for a better preparation for death; and that was given. I have had two relatives embrace their ending because their suffering had become intolerable. It is a source of relief, as much as it may be mixed with sorrow. I don't find this paragraph disturbing at all, I've lived through it and he's right. And remember, he's a Christian and he believes that she is going to heaven, so she is only being released from this mortal coil to go somewhere far better.*

Anyway, here's the thing, according to British law/morals at the time, Colonel Brandon was not "allowed" to marry Eliza Brandon. Your brother's wife was considered your sister, so while these marriages did occasionally happen, they could be voided if anyone brought a suit against someone and they were definitely frowned upon. (Remember Emma saying that her and Mr. Knightley weren't really brother and sister, that refers to this law).

If they did marry, their children may be considered illegitimate, which would make it hard for them to inherit if Delaford is entailed. And you know if a cousin stood to inherit, he'd challenge the children's right to the estate.

Because it was considered immoral, I have a hard time seeing Colonel Brandon marrying Eliza even if she had been healthy. His chances at marrying her ended not when she fell from status, but the second she married his brother. If he had found her healthier, he probably would have provided her a home and cared for her as his sister, but not considered marriage as might as he may loved her still. I don't think he resents her at all, he's very forgiving in his speech.

Parasomnia thoughts!!

1. In The Arms of Morpheus: I was sooo tense waiting for the ambience to kick into a riff or something lol! and when it did it was very cool, drums are immediately so Mike Is Back, Petrucci is awesome as always, more melodic than I was expecting but a nice album-focussed way to start :)

2. Night Terror: we already knew this as a single and I’ve loved it since first listen, a true prog-metal banger. loooove the dark vibes and the catchy chorus works weirdly well!

3. A Broken Man: another single, this one was more of a grower but I really like it now! the Deliverance vibes at the start are excellent (the darker atmosphere of this album in general is fairly Opethian which considering my current fixations is fine by me lol). the way it builds is awesome, and I’m a fan of the slower hulking heaviness of the verses. that interlude-y bit at 3:00 is so cool. WHY did it take a few listens to get into this one??? maybe it’s hitting different in the context of the album but damn

4. Dead Asleep: aaah something new… immediate reprise of a tune from ABM is cool! they are SO GOOD at creepy intro -> evil riff. that organ(?) at 2:00?? so dark I love it. niiiice melodic Petrucci solo, gotta love those. more big riffage and crazy instrumental, awesome. piano at the end… do I spy an interlude… ooh closing door okay, and into MM! Niiiiice, loving how it flows as an album so far

5. Midnight Messiah: last single, and another track that I really enjoyed from the get-go <3 Train of Thought vibes are strong on this one which is fantastic bc that’s my fav DT album besides I&W. the thrashy sound is a little different for them which is cool!

6. Are We Dreaming?: ✨ambience✨ & once again I’m very tense for whatever is coming! a well-placed breather after the chaos of MM. also organ babyyyy

7. Bend The Clock: ooh that opening guitar sound?? Mr Petrucci I adore you. Ballad? Acoustic guitar? Pretty! Again this is well-placed after the intensity of the first bunch of tracks. Very much enjoyed the riff at 1:30 and the evolution into a more fully-fledged song. It’s so epic and dramatic but has weight to it which is the perfect way to do a softer song to me!

8. The Shadow Man Incident: last song 😨 but it’s an epic so all is well. Honestly I’m just gonna sit back and take this one in otherwise this will be ten paragraphs long lol. The narration voice though – Neil in The Necromancer vibes much?! And that section at 10:30!! The whole instrumental bit OMG this is freaking awesome. Near the end: what is this last minute for…? Oh back round to the ambience from ITAOM! And ‘wake up’! This is such an ALBUM album and I love them for that

General notes:

James sounds awesome! they clearly paid attention to where the vocals would fit into the songs and what works with his current voice which is great

my new policy of listening to new things on headphones is working well bc the stereo is well-used, especially in all of Mike’s fills! they’re all over the place, as they should be.

the guitar sound is so meaty and EVIL! the atmosphere is so dark which I enjoy. great production too, the sound is just excellent

Extermination—I’m a sucker for Romana struggling with trauma in an emergency, and just as much of a sucker for her turning scary and torturing a dalek to death

Appropriation—I love Romana suffering, and I love that this is the start of Narvin’s loyalty to her personally

Emancipation—TWO assassination attempts, Leela thinking Romana died before they could make up (because she doesn’t communicate), Leela getting to be a leader in her own right

Desperate Measures—the daleks still call Romana unit 117, she uses her own worst trauma in her password, she is talked into trying to take power she doesn’t want to deal with AGAIN, her political opponent uses both her worst trauma and her attempts at diplomacy against her, and she’s left so very alone

Still Really Awesome

Weapon of Choice—I mean, Romana starts off the series by trying to stop terrorism by blowing herself up

Square One—time loops are always fun, and I appreciate Leela’s b-plot murder mystery

A Blind Eye—it’s on a TRAIN. Plus Romana is wildly reckless, and the Andred reveal is fun

Spirit—basically Gallifrey’s beach episode, love Romana and Leela bonding, that scene where she just breaks a window for the hell of it is SO funny

Pandora—timey-wimey body horror mystery, what’s not to love?

Imperatrix—K-9 gets blown up and it’s so, so sad :(

Fractures—the war is fun, and I do occasionally like to see Leela hurt

Warfare—war is still fun, K-9 as a double agent, and of course Romana’s latest grand plan involves dying

Mindbomb—the election drama took some interesting turns, further tormenting of Romans via arresting her, and K-9 is a qualified lawyer now

Disassembled—Brax the assassin is SO funny, and being betrayed by the Doctor, even another version of him, was so sad

Forever—the way Romana gets them stuck feels very self-sacrificey, just with her friends involved this time too, and Leela’s anger is so good

Arbitration—I liked the legal drama and courtroom reveal, plus there were surprise daleks

Ascension—the ONE time Romana has a clever place that works without killing herself, Narvin thinks she did a sacrifice and starts a war about it (because she doesn’t communicate). Also he’s responsible for Genesis of the Daleks. Also also, Romana programmed her future self to be hot and flirt with her. Plus—nonconsensual presidency

Enemy Lines—Romana finally gets to successfully sacrifice herself. Leela is abandoned to rebuild her life (again), and it’s so tragic. And then they get to die together, and I picture them in each other’s arms in that scene

Soldier Obscura—Ace is awesome and Brax is a mess

The Devil You Know—I really like this version of the Master, and he and Leela play well off each other as a reluctant team (until, you know, he betrays her)

Eh, It Was Ok

The Inquiry—I just wasn’t that into the mystery around the secret device or the bomb in the matrix

Lies—I found the intrigue a little dull

Insurgency—again, it wasn’t bad but I got kind of bored

Reborn—I liked the futures aspect of this messed up planet, but wine mom Romana was kind of boring

Evolution—didn’t love the ex-experimented on cult plot, and despite the time travel science fair being fun the main plot about it was only sort of interesting. Narvin spying on Leela was sweet, though

Celestial Intervention—maybe I just need to listen to it again but most of the story seemed kind of confusing and vague

Didn’t Really Like It:

Panacea—after so many exciting plots, Romana returning to her house and what’s his name being creepy about it did not hold my attention

Annihilation—I accept the vampires in my sci fi, but I don’t LIKE the vampires in my sci fi. Also they undid Leela being disabled in this one

Renaissance—it was confusing the first time. Obviously not once I listened to the next episode, but it made it hard to enjoy. I did, however, really love the scene where Romana has to watch to a diplomat she liked die because of her exhausted mistakes. She PROGRAMMED this scenario, you are torturing yourself here

Intervention Earth—I just don’t enjoy Romana III’s character as much as Romana II’s. I agree she’s hot, but chill Romana isn’t really my vibe

ain't gonna lie chief this game might as well be the lovechild of the Sims 4 and GTA 5 because I'm completely ignoring the main missions (currently neeed to either talk to Judy to find Evelyn or talk to rogue to find the relic engineer) and just doing side missions.

Okay, not just doing side missions, this is a full-on life simulator to me. I do side missions, I go at clothes stores to shop around and sell my loot, I buy new cars and drive around just to listen to music (body heat radio is my fav channel) I stop at pretty places to take pictures of V.

There is this XP buff you get from sleeping, so whenever it expires, around an hour irl, I drive V back home—yes I drive, I haven't touched fast teleport once, get her in the shower, flush the toilet, stare into the mirror, go watch the ingame TV while I get a snack irl, then put V to bed.

While I'm still at 1% Johnny virus and 5% death progress, one time while taking a shower randomly, V coughed up blood!

I was genuinely surprised. I've been making V take showers a lot and this only happened once so far, randomly.

Then, another time, I was checking the mirror in a new apartment and

Was greated by this goddamn face. My soul almost left my body. I tell you, this is the closest thing the game has ever gotten to a horror game. Because I was used to the routine, to seeing V's reflection, this wasn't even within my list of possibilities of things to happen unwarrantly!

I immediately went to the menu screen to see if the AI chip spread increased, but... no, it was still at 1% since I haven't done any main missions yet.

Anyway so, after V wakes up, I change the clothes to a completely new fit!

I also take pictures of NPCs with pretty clothes. Apparently, killing them doesn't drop the clothes and just summons cops :( Also, killing cops gives no xp, so I just stopped :(

All of this might seem tedious to other players, but honestly, I'm having the most fun I've ever had. When I get bored of the quiet life, I do a mission or two. I read almost everything on those shards I find. One of them contained a snippet of the homer's iliad! It was a line about Achiles speaking about glory and having a choice to make, mentioning his mom.

I watch the ads on the elevator rides, I stop at interesting scenes I stumbled upon. Like this one time, all of V's neighbours were cowering on the stairs, and I didn't know why.

Jumped over them (thanks to githzerai who told me to get the double jump implants) only to find that two cops were arresting my neighbour! Like woah, now things make sense.

So far, I'm lvl 23, street credit 36, and I found a blue tier sniper! Fuck yeah. Got a new apartment in Watson for 10k, got my beautiful turbo car, and now closed the game because real life calls.

Also, remember when I said this game doesn't have any misogynistic lines thrown around just because you picked a fem character? Yeah, that aged like milk. Enemies call you tits for brain on the regular here. Even "nice" characters can't help but comment on how you're "hot stuff"

For me, as a person, it doesn't bother me. I'm desensitised.

But I know it might bother other people, so I hope the playerbase will be more upfront about these details.

Does Johnny call a male V a joytoy, too? Otherwise... yeah.

Like I don't mind portrayals of harassment and toxic interactions in fiction, I like struggle narratives and how much conflict it creates. It gives you a window into the character's innermost workings when they don't see you as an equal.

But that doesn't mean other people have to be subjected to it just because they picked a fem V.

I mean, "he became a deeply protective and caring creature" or whatever they said in Roast of the Monkie Kids, and I sat there like....you mean. you mean the guy Tripitaka often agreed with, *insert some allegorical thing for persuasions of the heart, and that post on their similar nature* the one who get getting Wukong in trouble and stole fights at the end? Mmm, yeah he would push you off a cliff. But bc he's different here, we're contractually obliged (not personally, but when discussing objectively in fandom) to acknowledge those differences. I dislike JTTW Tripitaka, but I understand he's a different dude here. Also woah, didn't know that was something Tripitaka got hate for??? Most Wukong fans I hang around tend to like him. But 100% its genuinely funny Macaque gets the "bUT in jtTW" treatment bc in any other fandom it would never happen. But maybe its exactly because he clicks all the boxes of the fandom's villain fav that there's this push and pull to balance what someone thinks is a "lack of criticism" so they turn to the book and say "well if this was the BOOK he wouldn't be as popular" that is, of course, besides the people who genuinely have their lore all mixed up and with full confidence throw out incorrect facts. Also ughh, Macaque and the monkeys is one of my favorite running gags in this show and I really hope you're right because that means he maaaaay have been there during the Burning of Flower Fruit Mountain, if they keep that in since Erlang Shen is in the show. And it's right after the LBD incident. And yes, it's quite possible. To add on to your points, Wukong says "its time to give back what you stole" in s1 ep 9 and this show loves its parallels. Macaque's eye twitches then, and I wouldn't be surprised if he said that in their 2nd fight as he also stole their supplies. Oooh that IS interesting, I thought the fire sealing happened after the journey. I know a few people theorized that this was an AU where the circlet got taken off sooner, makes you wonder why? Honestly yeah, if they actually grew to get along then makes a whole lotta sense why Wukong would be upset. There's a thousand layers of tragic, because Imma be honest. I really struggle to see Macaque as being possessive or jealous. He'd going to need a serious trigger to do that, and it would have to be either serious resentment over Wukong not being there (FFM burning) or "Because normally you just RUSH to my rescue." being internalized and acted upon when "Monkey! No violence!" happens. The 1st fight def haunts him as it haunts Wukong bc we see him say "I need to stop dragging you into my mess" post s3. "But no! Wukong doesn't listen to anyone, doing whatever he wants and dragging everybody into his mess." Their fight drives me insane bc for the life of me, I can't imagine what motivates Wukong to throw shade like "always had a sidekick kind of vibe." and "on brand for you to have a worse version of everyone else's powers" and "that's a relief. I thought it was somebody important." or why Macaque wanted to kill him so bad "its going to be soo satisfying killing you with your own powers" why always the power reference? because all this over the MONK??? Nah. What caused them to spit hypothetical vitriol in mystery fight 2 so bad their relationship fractured into this. "It's great to see ya, bud!" being mocked again that time implies their 2nd fight had a heavy connection in bringing up the 1st as well if Mac is literally resurrected bothered over it instead of fight number two. "Looks like our own friend, the Lady Bone Demon" (s3 ep 1??) is ALSO weird af phrasing, because it sounds like Macaque was there during the LBD fight when we know he wasn't..........right? with the close timeline of events and her involvement in Mac's revival + the Diyu also freeing Azure + both of them initially hating Wukong, makes you wonder if its orchestrated to get back at him, like literally every villain thus far. Maybe for erasing his name from the book of life and death?

Especially with the trailer out.

I have a feeling the 10 kings are covering up their crime of releasing Azure and blaming it at Wukong.

Which despite it not at all being his fault, there’s too much evidence against him that unfortunately frames him as the one who released Azure or something…especially since all 10 kings are in a position of power.

Maybe this Season is more on trying to prove Wukong is innocent or something?

reading the things you post/rb while not knowing what the adventure zone is is kinda funny. I'll be scrolling my dash and see "NAH 'CAUSE BEANIEMAN GOT SO SCHLORPED WHEN THE PIANO FLAVORED STICK OF DEODERANT GOT SCAMMED" and I'm so tempted to get context, but it feels like life would be funnier without it

okay so like. the adventure zone is an actual-play ttrpg podcast (aka they record themselves playing dungeons and dragons and similar games and then edit down the recording so it's fun to listen to)

and it's kind of like 5+ different podcasts in a trenchcoat. cuz there's 5 completely separate games (well, 5 plus a couple way shorter games, but 5 main ones). and since each game is already pretty wild on its own, the fact that there are FIVE OF THEM definitely makes it sound extra bizarre to outsiders lol

there's:

1: balance: a standard fantasy world with some minor sci-fi elements. it's about heroes tracking down and neutralizing dangerous magical items and uncovering secrets about their own pasts. by far the most popular season and imo the best, but it gets off to a slow start

2: amnesty: a story about cryptids and magic in a modern day appalachian setting. been a while since i listened to this one tbh and i don't talk about it as much

3: graduation: young adults going to magic college and getting wrapped up in a demon war. this is the least popular one but not actually bad imo

4: ethersea: freelance adventurers from an undersea city exploring the world in a magical post-apocalyptic setting. my fav behind balance

5: steeplechase: like a defunctland video meets a heist movie, secret crime rings operating within a theme park. very fun, still in progress

they're released kind of like different seasons of a show, one after the other, but each "season" doesn't actually need to be listened to in order (ie you can listen to steeplechase before balance, but you'd have to start at ep 1 of steeplechase and not just skip to steeplechase ep 32 or else you'd be really confused)

honestly i've been halfway considering getting different tags for each game but i'm too lazy to change now

ANYWAY

the thing about the adventure zone is that it's a *comedy* podcast first and foremost. so most of the weird bizarre funny bits are just as funny and batshit insane even WITH context. hell, i'd say a lot of it is even MORE funny if you know what's going on.

though there is also some buckwild shit that you just get desensitized to. like one of the 3 protagonists of balance is named *taco* (but spelled taako) because it was originally just gonna be a silly one-off episode, so the player was like "haha i'm gonna be XD random and annoy my dm with this zany noun name", not knowing that there were gonna be 68 more episodes and it would eventually grow into a deeply emotionally moving story. so by the end you're fucking sobbing over this character's love and loss and you forget that "taco" is not a normal thing for an elf/wizard to be called
