Starting with nu who and working your way out from there is a weird experience

At first the Time War is just the Doctor’s tragic backstory, and it’s sad but he’s the last of his kind and has feels about it, it’s fine

And then you watch classic who and suddenly realize that oh, there’s all these people and he doesn’t like most of them but they’re all dead and gone now after being twisted by an unimaginable level of war

And then you get into the EU Gallifrey and their system is so messed up and no one is a good person but they have lives, they feel real, and they’re all going to be used as cannon fodder through one regeneration after another and there will be generations who don’t even know Gallifreyan culture because they were made only to die in the war and—
