Dissertation Survey about Adverse Childhood Experiences
Hello,
My name is Chelly Neuenschwander, and I am a fourth-year doctoral candidate in the Department of Counseling Psychology, Social Psychology, and Counseling at Ball State University. I am conducting a study to evaluate the effects of trauma within childhood (or adverse childhood experiences) and what helps people learn to cope with the trauma. It should take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete. This study has received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval through Ball State University (IRB #1432316-3).
Please consider participating in this study by following the link below if you are:
1) Ages of 18 and over, and
2) Experienced at least one of the following adverse childhood experiences before your 18th birthday: emotional abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect, physical neglect, mother or stepmother treated violently by father or stepfather or boyfriend, substance abuse in the household, mental illness in the household, parental separation or divorce, or incarcerated household member
3) Did not experience sexual abuse prior to your 18th birthday
https://bsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_29V0xdQvb4YZwAB
**If you are aware of other individuals who meet the study’s criteria listed above, please forward this letter to them.
Upon completion of the questionnaires, you will be given an opportunity to choose one of two incentives:
a) You may enter your information for an equal opportunity to receive one of 10 electronic $10 gift cards, OR
b) You may select to have $3 donated to an organization focused on preventing adverse childhood experiences
Your participation is completely voluntary, and all responses will be anonymous and confidential. You may withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.
For questions regarding the study or sharing this letter with others, please do not hesitate to contact me (Principal Investigator) at [email protected], or Dr. Theresa Kruczek, Faculty Advisor, at [email protected]. I greatly appreciate your assistance and support.
Thank you for your time and consideration!

#repost @notparentexpected ・・・ Today is February 6th. One year ago exactly I found out that my paternal grandmother was not my biological grandmother via a DNA test. This meant that my dad was not my biological father and everything I had grown to believe about myself was no longer accurate. Many realizations would happen that would just break my heart. I had nightmares that kept me up. I could not sleep. My brain was desperate for information to try to make this new trauma “make sense”. I am now in a much better place and working through healing via writing my memoir. I am so thankful for my journey and now see this day as a blessing in disguise. It has been a painful road that has lead me to a fuller understanding of myself. Thank you for supporting and following my journey. #trauma #dnatrauma #dnashock #everythingyouthoughttobetrueisnolongertrue #flashbacks #ptsd #cptsd #npe #childhoodtrauma #theboywhowasraisedasadog #complexptsd #petewalker #BruceDPerry #DrPerry #resilience #ACEscore #Attachment #adversechildhoodexperiences #thebodykeepsthescore #traumainformed #relationaltrauma #writingabouttrauma #tellingmystory #learningtheorigin #whatmakesmewhoiam #keepingthegood #healingthetrauma #growingintomyself #npe #notparentexpected https://www.instagram.com/p/B8PvJNXnStx/?igshid=3yvwaiwkkfwv

Got my #primeday purchase! @donnajacksonnakazawa's book that she published after this one, #ChildhoodDisrupted was life-altering for me and I expect nothing less from this book. # Childhood Disrupted is the first book I share with people who have also endured early childhood trauma, formally known as ACEs (adverse childhood experiences). If you don't know your score, look up the 10 question questionnaire. Mine is a 7. There is a profound link between a high ACEs score and later development of many types of chronic illness, including #autoimmunedisease. This link is staggeringly strong for women. But there is so much that we can do to heal! That's been the focus of my health journey for the last several years. Diet has been an afterthought. # If you have done the #AIP and not done anything to address the emotional aspects of autoimmune disease and taken steps to address early life trauma, I strongly encourage you to go down this path. It is in some ways much harder than any diet change could ever be. Feeling feelings that have been locked away for decades and getting trauma un-stuck from the body is HARD and uncomfortable. But it is so worth it once you are on the other side. # Have you read either of these books? Have you done work to heal from a high ACEs score? # See it on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2O5jllI # #aippaleo #autoimmuneprotocol #adversechildhoodexperiences #aipcommunity #beyondaip #neuroplasticity #neuroscience (at Memphis, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0EcaDGgQVG/?igshid=on8u1ps6f1v8

Does yelling harm children? What about witnessing parents yell at each other? Everybody yells sometimes. Every healthy partnership has disagreements. Look at those moments as opportunities to model conflict resolution, forgiveness, grace, non-violent communication skills and self-regulation skills. BUT….. If the yelling does not typically evolve into learning opportunities, and discussions about healthy expressions of anger, it can definitely be harmful and scary for children. If children are yelled at without their parent making an effort to apologize and take accountability for their own behaviour, without blaming them, then yes, it can be harmful. Also, if a parent frequently blames the other parent for their own behaviour, this can also be damaging. Accountability is key to mitigating the negative impacts that yelling can have on a child. Our emotions ebb and flow. They are not stable or controllable. Our behaviour is controllable but we tend to fall back on familiar patterns of behaviour, during stressful moments. For those of us on a healing journey, while we parent, trying to never yell may be an unrealistic goal, at this time. So what do we do when this does happen? Rupture and repair is part of the process of building secure attachment. It does not harm it, it actually makes those bonds stronger, because the repair builds trust. J.
