WOW. This was triumphant! Safdie's direction added an anti-comedy twist that I found extremely compelling. Sandler's jokes and songs vary from laugh out to loud to completely cringe-worthy, but it all worked for me! Even the raunch and moments that veer close to the more typical annoyances of married life from someone his age. You can tell he's got so much love for his people, his family, and his work, and that makes all the difference. I found the ending ode to Comedy to make this a companion special to 100% Fresh but in a way that was still totally fresh. (Someone, who shall not be named here, should've just had a career as an Elvis impersonator).

Adam Sandler: Love You (2024) review

Feel like I am the last person on Earth to discover that Adam Sandler can play guitar, and play it WELL!! Brother has skills!

Synopsis: Adam Sandler hits the stage for a thrillingly unpredictable comedy special featuring songs, jokes, party-crashing dogs and plenty of love.

I don’t tend to review stand-up specials/shows on here, as I prefer talking about film and on occasion TV shows. However with Adam Sandler’s new Netflix special Love You, this one happens to be an odd munchkin among the crowd. You see this special mixes in cinematic tropes and techniques to deliver a unique and different experience. Directed by Josh Safdie, who previously worked with Sandler in the stressful and frenetic Uncut Gems, and essentially that style is incorporated into this special. For the comedy club where Sandler is performing is not a real one, but in fact a built set that imitates in Safdie’s own words “the worst venue ever”.

Through the course of Sandler’s bits, Safdie would consistently utilise the set to cause various distractions and things going wrong like having a hole on stage, or a random dog crash the set, and then having Sandler react to it all with his regular improv sarcastic way. Of course this being Safdie he also films the whole thing super claustrophobic and up-close, creating that sense of unease, which I found to be a wonderful experimental way of delivering this special. Because when a comic is on stage, everything is under his/her control. That is the unwritten rule. Everything has to work perfectly to ensure that the jokes play out exactly as they intended them to. So Safdie/Sandler essentially are breaking all the rules here, taking that control aspect away from the comic. It’s an interesting experiment, and one that I found vigorously entertaining.

As for the stand-up show itself, it’s really funny. What I like about Adam Sandler’s comedic style on stage is that he is a storyteller. He isn’t simply building up to a single punch line. The entire bit is a punchline that consistently keeps on giving. Even the more vulgar stuff (Sandler seems to really like discussing penises and whacking off) didn’t seem like cheap low brow humour, but instead felt earned, as the way he told the story, the whole thing came together really well. I particularly enjoyed the gags about the balloon, genie and word spellings, but in all honestly 90% of the jokes hit the mark. This all is also accompanied by Sandler playing various guitars in different styles and singing silly songs, and look, your entertainment value of this thing is based sorely on how much you find the Sandman funny. Of course Safdie’s filmmaking tricks are a nice addition, but this is Sandler’s show through and through and the fella owns it.

Evidently you can tell Adam Sandler is getting more sentimental with age, as his special ends with him playing a song showcasing his respect for other comedians in history who share in his craft, with a montage in the background playing clips of the famous comics, which was a true love letter to the art of comedy, that is sure to put a smile on your face. Was it a bit on the nose and out of place? Maybe. Was the part where Rob Schneider popped up as Elvis for absolutely no reason necessary and the worst part of the special? Quite likely. But Adam Sandler you love us, and we love you. Keep being a funny guy!

Serendipity should be required viewing material before anyone tries to analyze Homestuck; not only is John Cusack a universal constant, but the themes and vibes of Serendipity are so fundamentally woven into Homestuck's DNA that several of Serendipity's thesises and conversations could be lifted directly from one to the other.

In particular, the way Serendipity utilizes coincidence and circumstantially simultaneous events in order to suggest - nay, decree - that the two leads belong together, is highly reminiscent of the way Hussie uses foreshadowing, and not just for romantic couples. It's also a major window into the ultimate stance Homestuck takes with regard to romance, fate, and destiny, and also more specifically, a really good look at Karkat's own personal philosophies of romance. There's a running theme in his movies of meeting someone that perfectly matches your freak, someone you don't ever need to compromise yourself around, who brings out the best in you.

Also, some of yall need to watch a shitty romcom every once in a while and develop some emotions

story time

so last night my boyfriend and i were playing this get to know you card game and one question was who would be your celebrity pass.

mine was of COURSE young adam sandler it will always be adam sandler I’m sorry, but it’s the truth and he knows it.

anyways then he proceeds to think very hard about the question. he’s visibly nervous to tell me, this boy is shaking in his boots just twiddling his thumbs while I give him a death stare…….. tell me why he blurts out ICE SPICE.

now mind you, I love miss icy girl. ice spice is my GIRL. and I cannot say that if I had the opportunity I wouldn’t also like to kiss her ya know a little 😘

however, thinking that my boyfriend also thinks that way is not so pleasant.

so now I’m angry. my chest is tight and all I can think about is how hot ice spice is and how I DO NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE HER

he sees me getting visibly upset he says well hold on now- you wouldn’t just vibe with adam sandler you’d make love to him.

so I started smiling bc well yes, he’s so right. I cannot disagree that if adam sandler got on one knee, I would say yes to that big question. I’m in indeed actually very confident the answer would be yes.
