23 October 2024: NZ Government cuts funding for research on preventing White Supremacist terrorism.
30 October 2024: NZ Government says they don't think Swastikas are as intimidating as gang patches and don't need the same restrictions.
I think we need to ask why our government does not percieve White Supremacists and Neo Nazis as a threat

i’m so fucking keen for bora to sink its teeth into whatever transphobic bill nzact manage to pass, if they even get it through parliament. like god i hope it gets stopped before then but i’ve been defending bora from right wing assholes trying to undermine it and how fucking amazing it is.
the beauty of it is that it makes it so nzact will have to consider precisely the intention of every way the bill can play out on the floor, in hansard (written record admissible in courts). if they don’t, the courts will find it inconsistent with bora and send it back to parliament, or nullify the application of it entirely.
nzact can’t do squat without hanging themselves from the political noose. the media have business bias but they have a left wing interest too and they will not let this go. the only chance this gets through is if this gets drowned out in the noise.

In a powerful and emotional demonstration, Māori lawmakers in New Zealand used the traditional haka to protest a proposed bill that could significantly alter the interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi, the country’s founding document. The protest disrupted proceedings in Parliament on Thursday, as opposition MPs voiced their outrage over the bill, which they believe threatens the rights of Māori people and undermines decades of efforts to address historical injustices.

via Instagram The youngest member of New Zealand’s parliament, Māori Party MP Hana-Rawhiti Kareariki Maipi-Clarke, started a haka to protest the first vote on a proposed law that would re-interpret New Zealand's founding legal document. The Treaty Principles Bill was introduced by the leader of the libertarian ACT party, David Seymour, and would redefine how New Zealand interprets the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi), which was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and more than 500 Māori chiefs. Under the proposed changes, the New Zealand government would have "full power to govern" and make laws "in the best interests of everyone", while also promising to "respect and protect" the rights of Māori under the treaty "at the time they signed it". Maipi-Clarke was suspended from parliament and her behaviour was called disrespectful and grossly disorderly by the speaker.
I love not just the open defiance of colonial rhetoric, but the solidarity of her party members and allies in parliament to rise to the occasion and join her. Literally in most cases!

Neil Gaiman has been accused of sexual assault by two women with whom he was in consensual relationships and is the subject of a police complaint in New Zealand.
Gaiman’s position is that he strongly denies any allegations of non-consensual sex with the women and adds New Zealand police did not take up his offer of assistance over one woman’s complaint in 2022, which, he says, reflects its lack of substance.
However, New Zealand police said it made a “number of attempts to speak to key people as part of this investigation and those efforts remain ongoing”, adding that there are “a number of factors to take into consideration with this case, including location of all parties”.
The allegations span two decades and concern young women who came into contact with Gaiman – the 63 year-old bestselling author of The Sandman, Good Omens, and American Gods – as a nanny to his child and as a fan of his writing.
The women’s allegations were first reported in Tortoise’s podcast ‘Master: the allegations against Neil Gaiman’, released on Wednesday. The four-part series examines the women’s accounts of rough and degrading sex with the author, which they say was not always consensual.
Although the vast majority of cases of sexual assault happen within relationships, most allegations go unreported, and therefore unprosecuted, because of the expectation that alleged victims would not be in a relationship with their alleged assailant. While the law says that consent is for each and every sexual act, many people assume that a relationship provides ongoing consent.
Scarlett, 23, alleges that Gaiman sexually assaulted her within hours of their first meeting in February 2022 in a bath at his New Zealand residence, where she worked as a nanny to his child. Tortoise understands that Gaiman’s account is that they only “cuddled” and “made out” in the bath and that he had established consent for this. His position is that, over the three-week sexual relationship that followed, they only ever engaged in consensual digital penetration.
Scarlett alleges that within this otherwise consensual relationship Gaiman engaged in rough and degrading penetrative sexual acts with her. Tortoise has seen contemporaneous messages, notes, and spoken to friends who Scarlett talked to at the time, which supports her allegations.
The second woman, K, was 18 when she met Gaiman at a book signing in Sarasota, Florida in 2003. She began a romantic relationship with him when she turned 20, and Gaiman was in his mid-40s, but alleges that she submitted to rough and painful sex that “she neither wanted nor enjoyed.” In one incident she alleges Gaiman penetrated her despite her asking him not to as she was suffering from a painful infection. Gaiman’s position is that he denies any unlawful behaviour with K and is disturbed by her allegations.
Tortoise understands that he believes K’s allegations are motivated by her regret over their relationship and that Scarlett was suffering from a condition associated with false memories at the time of her relationship with him, a claim which is not supported by her medical records and medical history.

This legislation in the Aotearoa Parliament will probably fail, but it's still very concerning that the ACT Party tried to effectively rewrite a 184 year old treaty without the consent of one of the two signatory parties. @xclowniex can provide more detail on this as she lives in Aotearoa, I don't (I live across the ditch in Australia & have visited Aotearoa a grand total of once, back in January/February of the year this post was made).

December 19th 1923 saw the birth of the Scottish actor Gordon Jackson.
Gordon was born the youngest of a family of five children in Glasgow in 1923. He attended Hillhead High School, but while there took part in a number of BBC radio shows including Children's Hour. After leaving school at the age of 15, he went to work as a draughtsman at Rolls-Royce. In 1942, Ealing Studios were looking for a young Scot to act in The Foreman Went to France and Jackson was suggested. Further film work followed, including San Demetrio London, and The Captive Heart. Perhaps the most memorable film in which he starred during this period was Whisky Galore!
In 1949, Jackson starred opposite the Scottish actress Rona Anderson in the film Floodtide. The two married on 2 June 1951, and had two sons. He also made his London stage debut in 1951 in Seagulls Over Sorrento. During the 1950s and 1960s Jackson appeared in TV shows such as The Quatermass Xperiment, The Adventures of Robin Hood, ABC of Britain, The Navy Lark, Gideon's Way and The Avengers as well as in films such as The Great Escape, The Bridal Path and the The Ipcress File.
Real fame came with his role as the butler, Hudson, in sixty episodes of the period drama Upstairs, Downstairs that ran from 1971 to 1975. In 1974, he was named British Actor of the Year; in 1976, he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor; and in 1979 he was awarded an OBE. In 1977 he took on the role of George Cowley in The Professionals which ran for 57 episodes. He was involved in a wide range of projects during the 1980s, including narrating afternoon cookery shows in New Zealand and films such as A Town Like Alice (in which his performance won him a Logie Award), The Shooting Party and The Whistleblower.
Gordon Jackson died in London aged 66 in 1990.

NZFirst is trying to fuck with trans healthcare and I will not let it stand.
There has recently been a publication made by the now right-wing government controlled ministry of health in Aotearoa New Zealand about the usage of specific puberty blockers. Despite there being little to no evidence against their use even in their own evidence brief there is clearly an intention to restrict their usage particularly on those who cannot make their own informed health decisions, which here is at age 16. This has been an effort spearheaded by Winston Peters and his right wing New Zealand First party, and supprted by right wing Act, with ambivilance from the centre right National party.
"well that sounds really shit what can i do about it" Thanks for asking, on this page you can read the contents of the publications and at the bottom of the page you can fill out a form stating your views on this and potential future changes they make, this can be done even if you are not a citizen of New Zealand. As for protests, this only came out today and there was only just recently a large hīkoi protest against another facet of this administration's current crusade against minority groups, The Treaty Principles Bill, that had over >40,000 in attendance (not big on a global scale but considering the city has about 200,000 people in it thats alot) so there may be a reluctance for another large protest again so soon, I am not currently aware of any protests however if anyone has any more up to date news on this please share it.
I don't usually make posts to this effect but this is an important issue that needs to be heard, sorry if any details are wrong, feel free to correct me.
In conclusion, trans rights are human rights, toitū te tiriti, don't let them push us back to the 1970's

Now that National and ACT look like they're set for an awful term for new zealand, do not let yourself forget.
Don't forget how mainstream media accepted blanket national ads on news websites without question. How they promoted David Seymour and other right politicians as guests on comedy panel shows, pushing their profile and image. How they insisted on describing threats of genocide, violence and terrorism as "jokes", "opinions", and "honest mistakes".
Don't forget the national party members accepting saluting nazis in their midst. David seymour's "jokes" about violently murdering Pacifica people. The female maori politicians receiving death threats, being physically assaulted and having their homes invaded . Christopher luxon describing the poor as "bottom feeders". Their allyships with destiny church. Their attempts to frame queer people as predators. Their clear and ongoing attempts to redress antisemitic conspiracies into "maori elite" ones; and saying we should be literally exterminated.
And most of all, you BETTER not forget to take action. We have years to make sure this doesn't happen again, to ensure they can get as few of their disgusting plans accomplished as possible. We have to make change wherever we can and ensure that marginalized voices are accepted, supported and lifted up in our communities.
Fuck National. Fuck ACT. Fuck NZ First. And fuck all their pathetic little cronies.
We won't be silenced.

So recently there has been discussions from people about the government banning swastikas and the Nazi salute. David Seymour of the Act party, one of 3 parties in government (we have a coalition government) was asked his thoughts. Here is an excerpt from an article I'll link at the end
He said: “I hate those symbols and salutes, but I quite like knowing who the idiots in society are, and if I prepare to self-identify like that, I think it's actually helpful.”
When asked whether his stance undermines the gang patch ban, he said the legislation was based on intimidation.
He was then asked whether people would find swastikas intimidating.
He said: “I think most people would say, anyone with any vague knowledge of history is just a complete idiot that makes one of those symbols, and so I think there's a difference there. Whereas people are genuinely intimidated by seeing certain gang patches.”
When asked if he would be intimidated by a person holding a swastika he said: “If I saw one of those in New Zealand I would think what an idiot.”
And this honestly just frustrates me so much. Like yeah sure dude, you wouldn't be intimidated by someone with a swastika, but i and many other jews would be.
The argument of hate isn't relevant to this particular scenario as it was brought on by the mongrel mob doing the nazi salute during a funeral for a leader. The mongrel mob is a gang, not an actual mob, but I'll refer to then just as the mob as that's the shortened version we use for them.
The mob don't engage in Nazi shit because they necessarily hate jews, they do it because it's offensive and because it intimidates people. That's the reason they do the nazi salute and get swastikas tattooed. I'm sure there are mob who are antisemitic, but it's not like some requirement to join.
And I just find the absolute lack of empathy for jews here in Aotearoa New Zealand, from our government disgusting.
And what makes it worse, is the government implementing a ban on gang patches.
Which like, gang patches are a bit useful, nazi symbols are not.
I haven't grown up around gangs, but there are a lot where I live and grew up. I've hung out with mob members before due to a friend of a friend inviting them over when I was younger. There are also like two different gang territories next to me. It is useful for me to know which gang someone is a part of as there are different safety rules.
But I guess gang patches are worse than literal hate symbols thanks David smellmore.
Anyway, here is the article if anyone wants to read it

TW TRANSPHOBIA
TL;DR, New Zealand now has a very transphobic government.
For those who do not know, New Zealand recently held an election to determine who will be in charge of the country and resulted in a victory for the right-wing National, Act, and New Zealand First parties. NZ First's leader Winston Peters ran on a platform of focusing on the "must-haves", however what Winston considers "must-haves" are very concerning. Among NZ First's election commitments were to remove gender neutral bathrooms from government buildings, removing government funding from women's sport teams that allow trans women, and removing "gender ideology" from the curriculum. Despite only winning 6% of the vote in the election, the coalition deal between the three parties includes nearly all of these policies apart from banning gender neutral bathrooms. In fact, the ban on "gender ideology" is even worse.
Under the new government, schools will no longer be allowed to teach students about any matters relating to sexuality or even having healthy relationships. As a trans teen living in Aotearoa, this major regression of trans rights is terrifying. New Zealand was the second country to legalise same-sex marriage, and has for many years been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ politics. However, the country has taken a new direction that I cannot abide by. These new policies will hurt trans people and further ostracise an already marginalised community. While the Labour Party, the Green Party, and Te Pāti Māori are likely to oppose these policies, for those living in New Zealand whose MP is not a part of Labour, Te Pāti Māori or the Greens, contact your MP right now and urge them to oppose the government's transphobic policies.

National/ACT/NZF feeling "threatened" by the haka in parliament and wanting to put rules in place to stop it happening again is just racism.
They're upset that someone chose to express their culture that you want to suppress. They would not be acting this way if she sung the national anthem.
(They say it interrupted the vote but they had already counted every party present so this is just a lie.)
Maori culture is New Zealand culture. And therefore Maori expression deserves to be a part of New Zealand political process.
