As a wheelchair user I'm trying to reframe my language for "being in the way."

"I'm in the way," "I can't fit," and "I can't go there," is becoming "there's not enough space," "the walkway is too narrow," and "that place isn't accessible."

It's a small change, but to me it feels as if I'm redirecting blame from myself to the people that made these places inaccessible in the first place. I don't want people to just think that they're helping me, I want them to think that they're making up for someone else's wrongdoing. I want them to remember every time I've needed help as something someone else caused.

Custom Globe Dream Project

Fun fact; the only thing I love more than a map is a globe.

I think that America as a whole would be better if the last few generations grew up with a globe in the house. Something that let them not just look at the world map, but impart the sense of scale, relationship and unity of nations. A physical object that can be experienced in ways that a 3d graphic rotating on a screen cannot.

Today I realized that if I had the time, energy, money, and peace of mind; my dream project would be to create a blank globe built to accept and SWAP custom printed gores.

Imagine a globe that you could UPDATE as the geopolitical landscape changes.

A globe that you could switch to different eras in history.

A globe that focuses on terrain and biomes.

Or even a globe of your favorite fantasy or scifi worlds!

All without needing more than a single shelf of storage space.

I feel like the key would be engineering the plastic sphere with some kind of tab/slot system at each pole that is clamped in place when the globe is mounted.

Coupled with a capable print shop sizing sheets of corresponding printouts that the owner would then cut and store themselves. And maybe even a special case long enough for each mercator slice.

I've actually bought a blank globe with a chalkboard skin for the purposes of drawing on it, but being able to draw in a pre-measured digital template and just print, cut , and apply would be so much easier.

In another world, this would be my kickstarter project or shark tank pitch.

It is the only surviving fragment of a lost medieval manuscript telling the tale of Merlin and the early heroic years of King Arthur's court.
