JACK THE GIANT KILLER

originally this was a kind of personal visual vibe test: I'm still turning some thoughts around about jack in my head (altho I have finished assembling the skeleton of a story and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when I start to press at it) but I really liked how it turned out so I'm posting it as it's own illustration :)

the first post about this idea is over here, but I've fine tuned it down a bit so that the story begins with jack finding the body of a giant while he's out in the woods one day, and the story spirals out of hand before he can stop it.

it's been interesting to read up on jack tales from a literary analysis point of view while I figure this story out!! and through the power of more coffee, I think. I'm close to pinning down an underlying theme I'd really like to bite into. I just need to condense it down to a couple of sentences instead of several paragraphs.

I'm guarding my heart against expecting adoribull crumbs in veilguard because I really don't believe it's going to happen. I think that might be one of the sweet slender branches on the possibility tree that they'll gently and quietly prune away from relevancy, especially since it doesn't involve a player character. dorian will almost certainly be back (hey hiii bestie how have you been? stressed out of your mind I imagine), but I can't imagine they'll let you get too granular with setting up your world state, especially since after ten years they will be expecting to have a lot of players who are new to the series. like AT MOST I can imagine a little background detail implying an amicable bittersweet breakup rather than dragging out the long distance and danger of it all as tevinter politics heat up, if you're allowed to set them both as being still alive.

gonna be real the more news i see for wilds the more i feel mixed on it.

of course all we have are trailers and a demo so i’m sure once the full game releases it’ll be more fitting. that was an issue with most of modern mh where the trailers really didn’t give the games justice so i’m hoping that’s the same thing here.

not saying it’s gonna end up bad or anything, and it’s clearly trying to be innovative similar to world. however, idk if it’s just me, but the vibes seem really off. save for the rigs, a couple monsters, and the returning ones, both the environments and creature designs don’t feel very… monster huntery.

part of it has definitely been the area design. fifth gen removing zones and maps was a massive double edged sword where it made battles seamless, but the environmental design suffered as a result. areas aren’t as recognizable since there’s no need to add landmarks to make sure you know where you’re going if you lack the map item. it’s either a ton of empty space or cluttered which is a shame. while removing the loading screens when traveling to other areas is cool and a natural bit of progression, it still doesn’t seem right. there’s also a lot of washed out, plainly colored palettes with some of the newer designs which is a shame too. the disgusting blobby brute we got recently is one of the exceptions thankfully.

i’m still excited—monster hunter is rad no matter which direction it goes in. this is clearly an ambitious project and i wish the devs the best of luck. however, the concerns are still there.

again, i have to stress this doesn’t make the game bad by default, i don’t think it’ll be stinky poopoo garbage or something, nor am i trying to discourage preorders or whatever. rather, i feel it’s important to recognize that wilds has the chance of further falling into the same trap many former niche franchises have, which is sacrificing identity for the sake of marketability. many studios including capcom have done it before and i don’t wanna see it be done again.
