US launches fourth round of strikes against Houthis in Yemen

US Central Command said the US Army launched another series of missile strikes on facilities controlled by the Houthi group.

The attack was the fourth time in recent days that the US has directly struck the group in Yemen.

The strikes were launched from ships and submarines in the Red Sea and hit 14 missiles that the command deemed an “imminent threat” after a one-way attack drone was launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen and struck a Marshall Islands-flagged, US-owned and operated vessel, the Genco Picardy, in the Gulf of Aden in what the Houthis said was a “direct hit.” Central Command said in a statement posted on X late on Thursday afternoon:

Forces conducted strikes on 14 Iran-backed Houthi missiles that were loaded to be fired in Houthi controlled areas in Yemen. These missiles on launch rails presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region and could have been fired at any time, prompting US forces to exercise their inherent right and obligation to defend themselves.

I think people need to realize that it was sheer luck that they have been born in developed countries with decent living conditions, away from the threat of war or civil conflicts. It is by pure coincidence at times that you end up being a citizen of a developed country, rather than one with an impoverished population experiencing man-made (because it is man-made in this day and age) famine, diseases that have been long eradicated or war (be it a civil conflict or due to selfish interests of developed nations who profit from these, at the cost of civilian lives). You could have been born into these conditions.

The point is: NO ONE should ever be made to witness the horrors of war, famine, poverty, disease or any other trauma inducing situation in which they have no free will or say about its outcome.

The French Navy just released images of the tanker Marlin Luanda, burning in the Gulf of Aden last night after a Houthi missile attack when the tanker refused to heed calls to turn around. The French frigate Alsace, the USS Carney, and INS Visakhapatnam responded to the vessel, finally controlling the fire after 20 hours.

World Food Programme faces rising demand amid global crisis

The World Food Programme (WFP) stated that the demand for humanitarian aid, especially food assistance, was exceeding the organisations’ capacity, with the number of people in need increasing due to escalating conflicts, climate disasters and economic turmoil.

Growing needs are outstripping the means of the international community, including WFP, raising fears of escalating hunger and malnutrition and threatening global stability and security.

The threat of hunger and disease looms over Gaza and Yemen. The Israel-Hamas war has displaced 90 per cent of the population, resulting in severe shortages of food, water and health services.

Some background on the Houthis what is happening

Following weeks of Houthi-led attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, the United States and United Kingdom have launched military strikes in Yemen in response, which the Houthis have described as “barbaric”.

The Houthis are an Iran-aligned group based in Yemen and have said their attacks are a response to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, and the international community’s failure to put an end to it.

Who are the Houthis?

The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah (supporters of God), are an armed group that control most parts of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, and some of the western and northern areas close to Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis emerged in the 1990s but rose to prominence in 2014, when the group rebelled against Yemen’s government, causing it to step down and sparking a crippling humanitarian crisis.

The group then spent years, with Iran’s backing, fighting a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia. The two warring sides have also repeatedly tried to hold peace talks.

However, analysts say the Shia group should not be seen as an Iranian proxy. It has its own base, its own interests – and its own ambitions.

What’s the status of Yemen’s civil war?

Yemen has been in a decade-long civil war as the Houthis maintain control of parts of the country. The group has been in ceasefire talks with Saudi Arabia while Yemen’s official government is based in Aden and led by President Rashad al-Alimi.

Al-Alimi came into office in 2022 after the country’s exiled president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi ceded power to him. Relations between Hadi and the Houthis were especially fraught.

Yemen’s civil war has plunged the country into what the United Nations called “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis”, in March 2023.An estimated 21.6 million people or two-thirds of Yemen’s population are “in dire need of humanitarian assistance and protection services”, according to the UN.Fighting between Houthis and the military coalition, however, largely subsided last year. In 2023, the Yemeni rebels and government forces also exchanged about 800 prisoners over three days.The Houthis have been engaging in Omani-mediated talks with Saudi officials to negotiate a permanent ceasefire. Saudi Arabia also restored relations with Iran in 2023, raising hopes for the Yemen peace process.

Why have the Houthis attacked Red Sea ships?

The attacks began after the start of the Israel-Hamas war on 7 October.

The Houthis declared their support for Hamas and said they would target any ship travelling to Israel. It is not clear that all of the ships attacked were actually heading there.

In November they seized what they said was an Israeli cargo ship.

They since have attacked several commercial vessels with drones and ballistic missiles.
