Here is our complete guide to curling a heat safe wig!
We specifically figured out this method worked best when styling this wig for my level 3 Imogen Temult cosplay. She's from campaign 3 of Critical Role. There are many other methods to curl wigs, but this is the one that got the best hold and our desired look on this particular wig! Of course, then I decided to cosplay Imogen at level 13 first and her hair is totally different so this wig is going in storage but at least we got to make a useful tutorial first.
We already have a video version of this tutorial up on our Tiktok and Youtube that we will move over to Tumblr, but honestly I struggle The Most with learning from video tutorials. I prefer things written out so we wanted to make this sort of tutorial as well for accessibility!
Additional tips & all of the products we use are under the cut. Feel free to shoot us a message if you have any questions or want more tutorials on wigs!
What We Use:
Wig: Pastel Purple Wavy Lace Front Synthetic Wig LF5110 from Wig Is Fashion. It technically comes with a curl but we straightened and recurled it differently. Whatever wig you get, just make sure you check that it's heat safe before attempting this!
Silicone Spray: Mane 'n Tail Detangler. Yes, this is technically for horses, but listen, it works SO WELL on synthetic wigs. It keeps it from getting all static-y and tangled. We've only ever used this brand but it works really well so we're def sticking with it.
Setting Spray: Schwarzkopf Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray. This makes sure the curls you spent hours making actually hold!
Crimper: SixRiver Ceramic Waver Hair Tool with 4-in-1 Flat Crimping Iron Plates. This comes with four ceramic crimping plates and Nic uses the one with the "most wiggles" on the lowest setting (320). You can probably use any crimper that goes low enough. Crimp it fast, you aren't holding it like with curls.
Curling Iron: Conair 1 Inch Curling Iron. We use this on "19", whatever that means because it doesn't actually have temperatures. Any curling iron with low enough heat settings will do, you might need to play with settings to make sure you don't melt the hair. Test it on the bottom of the lowest layer of hair where you could cut it off if you melt it. As with curls on human hair, different barrel widths will give you wildly different curl looks.
Teaser Brush & Large Tooth Comb: Honestly these probably came with one of our first hair cutting or wig styling kits so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Apparently the teaser brush is Revlon branded.
We aren't sponsored by anyone, this is just what we use! Feel free to substitute in anything that you have / know works well with wigs. We hope this helps! Please let us know what other cosplay or crafting tutorials you'd like to see <3

Wig show offfffff
I like the wig, what can I say, adding curls and pearls to a character that has strait and not fluffy hair at all is my passion. Why should a queer character (!headcanon!) have straight hair ?

WiP - Okarun (Dandadan) Wig & Make up test
So I made a mask... decided to turn this into a full cosplay. Of course a wig had to follow, you can buy a bunch of character wigs but I got... a mop.
It was a serious case of "trust the process" here.

I think you can see what I meant here. This is from out of the bag to first steamed to shape it a bit. Then crimping. Steaming again, and then hairspray and heatgun styling (don't recommend that if you aren't sure how hot your wig can get you will have a melted mess).

Here is the final styling for the wig. It's a big fragile guess I need to pour in more got2B before I wear this for a con. Also the wig is really huge on my head I have to use the smallest possible q_q;;
But good thing is a lot is covered when I wear the mask.

Here are two tests but then I decided to add magnets and ... put on some make up. I don't really own black make up anymore I had to improvise.

Bless the fact I actually have round glasses.

Finally progressing on the Shadow wig! Started with a cheap mid-length black wig, and I spent all day yesterday sewing in red wefts, trimming it, and teasing and heat forming the back in preparation for spiking it!
I love it a lot better than the previous attempt for sure, but man do I still hate wig styling. wig fibers are just so itchy...

the process of making my wig for marcille!
this was my third time styling a wig for a cosplay, and its the first time where it had multiple specific parts to get right. im honestly really pleased and proud with how it came out, especially since i had only like 3 days to get it finished before the ren faire happened.
learned new things, and cant wait to make more!!

Love that everything in Star Trek TOS looks a little shit, except for the wigs, for which there was apparently an unlimited budget and all the time in the world. In the early episodes Nurse Chapel was rocking three or four different elaborately styled looks when she simply not on screen enough to justify that. Even the girls of the week would usually have their hair augmented with crazy hairpieces of some variety. Not to mention our series regulars-- Shatner famously stole many (very expensive) custom hairpieces from the set and I believe Nichelle Nichols also stole some wigs and pretended they went missing. This show had amazing wigs.

I don’t believe in gatekeeping resources so here!
A wig display head for under $40 that is anatomically correct enough to display your wigs without looking weird, doesn’t have a creepy face, works with a tripod, and even has a built in wig grip!
I got style 1 (the listing pics are a bit misleading and the actual makeup is darker)

She arrived in 15 days and after how long it took me to track down a good display wig mannequin? I’m sharing the info widely.
