One of my absolute favourite techniques for getting synthetic wigs with depth and realism is to go at them with alcohol markers (copics if you can afford them, but store brand also work!)

Light-coloured wigs give the most possibilities for dramatic alterations, but you can add depth to medium-darker shades as well! By adding roots and lowlights, you can get really beautiful blended shades, or you can even change the colour completely. You can also tint wigs warmer or cooler depending on your goals - a blonde wig for example could read more platinum if you blend in a cool grey, blue, or purple tone.

For most of the work featured here, I literally just drew on the wig strands with markers, and heat-set with a hairdryer after! You could also do alcohol inks mixed with isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle if you need more coverage.

Basically, I always encourage folks to look at wigs (and any materials tbh) with an eye for not an exact match, but what they COULD become with a little work behind the scenes! Happy wigging!

(Oh and to add!! The one thing you have to be careful of is hairspray! Wigs that are lightly markered are usually okay, but the more ink you add, the more likely it will be reactivated by the alcohol in hairspray cans, so keep that in mind for your projects!)

Love that everything in Star Trek TOS looks a little shit, except for the wigs, for which there was apparently an unlimited budget and all the time in the world. In the early episodes Nurse Chapel was rocking three or four different elaborately styled looks when she simply not on screen enough to justify that. Even the girls of the week would usually have their hair augmented with crazy hairpieces of some variety. Not to mention our series regulars-- Shatner famously stole many (very expensive) custom hairpieces from the set and I believe Nichelle Nichols also stole some wigs and pretended they went missing. This show had amazing wigs.

this was my third time styling a wig for a cosplay, and its the first time where it had multiple specific parts to get right. im honestly really pleased and proud with how it came out, especially since i had only like 3 days to get it finished before the ren faire happened.

learned new things, and cant wait to make more!!

Making a wig for marcille only to end up looking like thistle

I recently found a cheap used lacefront off of eBay and styled it specifically for the Takarazuka version of Oscar! I want to make several looks from their productions at some point and decided to dedicate a wig specifically to it. The style has changed a lot over the years of productions, so I kind of picked the elements I liked best from different ones and combined them.

The base wig was straight, so I did a roller set, steamed it, combed it out, and trimmed the bangs and layers afterwards. Thanks @gormasmus for teaching me how to do roller sets, it's so much more efficient than a curling iron once you get the hang of it!

I'm actually planning on redoing my wig for my full military Oscar build which sounds crazy I know. I still plan on using my old wig for some of her looks, but I've realized I want to take the style a slightly different design direction for my competition build after some more thought and research.

Oh right I've been talking about it on my other accounts/discord but-

I've been slowly working on putting together a Zhu Yuan cosplay... today I decided to finally sit down and do the part I was worried about fucking up the most... the wig....

It needs more red streaks, but they're no longer available and who knows when they'd come back in stock.... But I do have an old wig that's close enough in colour that I could cut up for the wefts I need...

So after a bit of planning and getting stupid high, I sacrificed my old Pyrrha wig... RIP girlie....

After a few hours of being easily distracted and high af this ultimately took me like 30 mins at best lmaooo But! One more streak is in and I have the front part of the bangs trimmed and styled uwu

There still a bunch more to do, but this is a decent start
