Certainly, I don’t enjoy my cycling workouts anymore but it’ll be significantly reduced by this time next week. Physically my body seems to be coping well with the workouts, far better than I ever give it credit for. My hope for this week was to be able to run 3…

The Long Reach of Eric Monte: A Writer Who Defined a Decade
It’s tempting to lay the tone of the entire 1970s at the feet of writer Eric Monte (Kenneth Williams, born Christmas Day, 1942). I was a child throughout that decade, and Monte’s creations (acknowledged and unacknowledged) dominated the television airwaves then. His characters were trendsetting. Yet few knew (or know) his name. Monte grew up in the Chicago projects, then dropped out of high…

WHERE HE KNOWS YOUR NAME
“There’s something missing from my life. Sure, I have a nice wife, a career and a house; I guess I’m talking about that spiritual something to give it all meaning and enable me to be at peace with myself and the world.” This was a monologue from Norm, the barfly played so expertly by actor George Wendt on the dearly loved American comedy Cheers. I happened to see it while skimming videos on…

Gratitude Diary
It’s been a bit of a stressful week because I have decided to reduce my carb intake to force my body to burn its remaining fat stores. The battle with my own mind not to give in has been brutal but I’ve done well and the work has paid off. Perhaps another week or two of this, then I will build up to maintenance and never have to worry about weight loss ever again (hopefully). I am grateful…

Two Simple Things to Do to Be More Like Jesus
“As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake for they were fishing.” It’s a wonderfully ordinary sentence filled with ordinary verbs. Instead, we rush on to read about Jesus driving an evil spirit out of a man or Jesus healing Simon and Andrew’s mother.…

The Great Lie
A large portion of humanity buys into the great lie that we have the ability within ourselves to save ourselves, or at least to help God in the salvation process, whether to a small or large degree. The Bible is plain that salvation is completely by grace and not by human works (Eph 2:8-9). Grace is unmerited favor; it is undeserved goodness. Grace flows from the heart of a giver who loves…

Were You There?
Yes, I was there — glued to the presidential returns that came in. Even my children and grandchildren had a Watch Party – waiting for the big announcement. The history books will long declare “Donald Trump became the 45th President AND the 47th President-Elect of the United States of America. Who woulda’ thought that after all the negativity that has surrounded him (truths or untruths – only he…
