An AI for mental support - are you f@@king kidding me???!!!
Today I found out through a podcast interview that there is an AI-based app for wellbeing support. True, in the website it never outright say "mental health", and in the interview the person says "low to moderate mental health support", not care, not therapy... but really!!!!
And probably I'm late in realizing the extent of this and there are dozen others.
But, as someone who has/had her period of serious struggling with her mind state, who cried also for the lack of someone to talk to about it, this is heart shattering!
We blame people for wasting their time in "parasocial activities" (and I do see and understand the irony of me doing just that, talking to my laptop screen and so doing something very similar to using that app) and then we let this happen.
As a first health responder at work (the definition might vary in the world, I have no medical training), but also as a private citizen, actually, I can not give someone with stomach burns an over the counter anti-acid without doing illegal medical practice, and we let an AI talk to someone who is struggling mentally??!!
I see artists everyday, writers and graphic artists and every other form of artistic expression, get up in arms against AI and I fully support them. Do mental health care providers value their work so little that they let this happen?? Or is it just that only the thousands (or millions) who would not be able to afford real proper mental health care rely on apps like this, and so professionals don't care about them anyway?
Below the break there is only info on the app to give the proper fact-checking references but also not to advertise it in any way!
My opinion stands for all similar apps, so it is not about this app in particular. But to give some facts and not being just a theoretical rant and to give some fact-checking references to those who want to verify themselves, the app in question is lumii.life. The interview is in the"Standard Issue Podcast" Ep. "Laura Tristram's no year's resolutions" (I have the Patreon's edit that sometimes has longer versions of interviews).
I have to give credit to the interviewer in raising the question if an AI is good enough and that one wouldn't "advocate for using it for serious mental health problems" . The answer talked about "helping people with day-to-day problems and low level to moderate mental health support" and again that the app was trained such that "if it feels that someone needs more intensive support or is in crisis it will recommend that they go and get help or they call a help line"
The website says "your AI companion for 24/7 wellbeing support. Get real-time guidance for managing stress, easing anxiety, or simply having someone to talk to."
