Three things

“Woe to you Pharisees!”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus delivers a well-deserved rebuke to the Pharisees.

For having their focus on the wrong things. When we hear what they’re focusing on (tithing mint?), it’s easy to check out for the rest of the Gospel.

After all, none of us are tithing mint or garden herbs, so we’re good. Right?

Not exactly. While we’re not focusing on the same wrong things that they were back in the day, most of us have less silly stuff that we’re focusing on. Less obvious stuff (at least to us) that serves as our wrong things.

And most of us have a lot of wrong things that we focus on. Things that we’ve told ourselves are very important. Maybe it’s stuff like jobs and careers. Or stuff like wealth and material possessions. Or stuff like fame and how we look on social media. Or whatever else it is.

Truly, it doesn’t matter what we’re focusing on (no matter how important or godly we might think it is), if what we’re focusing on is the wrong thing.

So how do we know what is the right thing? What should you and I be focusing on?

Actually, it’s three things. Jesus gives us three things that are always the right things to focus on.

Three things that are in practice inseparable. Don’t waste your time trying to do one without the others.

Justice.

The love of God.

And bearing each other’s burdens.

If you’re thinking, “that sounds like a practical application of the Great Commandment*,” then you are not far from the Kingdom of God.

* “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Expectations

God loves to mess with our expectations.

Not because God is manipulative. That’s not who God is.

God loves to mess with our expectations – because our expectations are messed up. Especially our expectations about ourselves and God.

We listen to all kinds of things. But there’s something about us that seems to hang onto the wrong things.

We can have a day at work where a new employee is grateful we’re helping them learn their job. Where customers thank us. Where the manager calls us out for going above and beyond. Where one random person is a jerk for no reason.

The part we hold onto?

The random jerk. We replay that over and over. And let everything else, all of the good stuff, go.

Do that consistently – and it is so easy to do, especially with really bad things. Replay the bad things that happen, add in the bad things we do, smother it in regrets, ignore the good stuff, and…no wonder our expectations are messed up.

It’s why we miss out on God’s best. Because we tell ourselves we don’t deserve it. We’re not going to get it. We’re too far gone.

The thing is, God doesn’t share our expectations.

You see it over and over in the Gospels. Look who Jesus seeks out. People who see themselves as little more than the sum total of the bad things that have happened and the bad things they’ve done.

If you’re one of them. If you think you’re too far gone. That you’ve done too much for God to ever care about you.

God will mess with your expectations.

Because, no matter what you’ve done, there is nothing that you can do to change how God sees you.

No one is too far gone for God’s love.
