A lot of people were telling me that ‘nothing ever happens’, that my fears about what Trump would do in his second term would be unfounded. “He didn’t get all that much done in his first term,” (he did), “why will this be any different?”

Because all of the safeguards that prevented the worst of it before are gone. Because all of his opponents, especially ‘loyal opposition’ within his party, are gone. Because the rival political party appears to be willing to let him eviscerate the country as we know it.
