You may have heard about the 'pink tax', but have you ever wondered how it actually effects women's finances?
'Pink tax' is an unfortunate reality in 2025 that directly impacts women. It refers to the price difference created by companies that charge more for the female version of various products. These gender-based price discrepancies can add up quickly, leaving women paying more for products simply because they are marketed toward them.
According to a report by NetVoucherCodes, women are spending £4.34 billion more than men on essential items, which works out to approximately £126 per woman annually in 'pink tax'. This is a significant amount over time and highlights the financial burden many women face when purchasing everyday products.
Consumer expert Ellie Macsymons tells the Mirror: "Pink coloured products marketed towards women are 14% more expensive than the male version of those same products. Overall, women are paying the most in comparison to men on items including perfume (£38 more), moisturiser (£35 more), and razor blades (£17 more) on average per year."
This pricing disparity becomes even more obvious when comparing products that are essentially the same but presented in different packaging based on gender. Products marketed toward women may seem to offer the same value for a similar price but, in reality, provide significantly less for the money - this is known as 'gender shrinkflation'.
This form of shrinkflation is not only misleading but also reflects the larger systemic issue of gendered pricing. Furthermore, this pricing inequality extends beyond personal care products and into clothing as well. Parents have reported paying up to £30 more for a girl’s school uniform compared to a boy’s, despite the products being largely identical aside from the design.
While the 'pink tax' may seem inevitable in a society where gendered marketing has been ingrained for decades, Macsymons has shared the practical ways to avoid it.
Buy gender-neutral or men’s products
One of the easiest ways to avoid paying the pink tax is by purchasing gender-neutral versions of everyday essentials such as razors, shower gel, shampoo, and deodorants. These products typically serve the same purpose as the ones marketed toward women but are often less expensive. By opting for these, you can reduce the demand for ‘pink’ products targeted at women, as well as save money in the process.
Check the label
Before purchasing a product, it’s always worth checking the label. While a product might seem fairly priced based on the ingredients or packaging, that isn’t always the case. Comparing the labels of men’s and women’s products will often reveal that the contents are virtually identical. In such cases, choosing the less expensive option can save you a considerable amount of money.
Avoid multi-pack deals
Don’t fall for multi-pack deals just because they seem like a good value. It’s crucial to compare how much you’d pay individually for the same product and calculate the price per unit. Sometimes, these deals are designed to appear cheaper, but when broken down, they may still be more expensive than buying individual items.
DIY or alternative solutions
For personal care items or cleaning products, considering DIY alternatives can be a great solution. This approach allows you to control the ingredients, reduce waste, and, most importantly, avoid the inflated prices of products marketed to women. With just a bit of time and effort, you can often create your own versions of the products you use regularly, saving both money and the need to pay a ‘pink tax.’
Whether you can afford it or not, one thing is clear - it’s still unfair. Women having to pay twice as much as men for the same product demonstrates how sexism continues to influence our daily lives.
By being mindful of your product choices and opting for gender-neutral or male-marketed alternatives, you can avoid paying the pink tax and save money in the process. Taking small, conscious steps can reduce the financial burden caused by the pink tax while also sending a message that this inequality should not continue.

Since the virtual reality service’s launch in 2021, the so-called “successor to the mobile internet” became the recipient of a kind of soaring hype few things are ever blessed with. According to Insider, McKinsey claimed that the Metaverse would bring businesses $5 trillion in value. Citi valued it at no less than $13 trillion. There was only one problem: The whole thing was bullshit. Far from being worth trillions of dollars, the Metaverse turned out to be worth absolutely bupkus. It’s not even that the platform lagged behind expectations or was slow to become popular. There wasn’t anyone visiting the Metaverse at all. The sheer scale of the hype inflation came to light in May. In the same article, Insider revealed that Decentraland, arguably the largest and most relevant Metaverse platform, had only 38 active daily users. The Guardian reported that one of the features designed to reward users in Meta’s flagship product Horizon Worlds produced no more than $470 in revenue globally. Thirty-eight active users. Four hundred and seventy dollars. You’re not reading those numbers wrong. To say that the Metaverse is dead is an understatement. It was never alive.

My thoughts on AQPDO

So, did this image appear in the actual film? Yeah, that's what I thought...
I loved it, and I was disappointed by it. This is long, so buckle in. Major Spoilers discussed below.
First, the outstanding: the performances. Holy hell. Lupita. Just...her talent is breathtaking. To sustain that level of intensity without overdoing it, I am simply in awe. Well done. I hope some attention is paid to her performance when award season rolls around. Ditto Alex Wolff. He did a LOT with so little screentime. Djimon too; they all were so, so moving.
Joe was so heartbreaking, and yet Joe's character is one of the things I am disappointed about, because I needed more. Not because I love Joe, but because the story needed it. I know there was a backstory that was cut, and to be honest I don't think that was necessarily a poor decision, but the issue is it was cut late in the creative process, versus in the writing, and that is where the problem is. More on that in a bit, but Joe delivered a sensitive and moving performance, and really understated as well. Not a bit of the cheeky Joe we have come to love so much that also I think pops out in Eddie and Michael occasionally. He was wholly immersed in Eric's reality and his energy complimented Lupita's so well; you can see how much they worked off each other. Dare I say she elevated his game. Another marathon performance and I can imagine how exhausting it must be to sustain that.
Second, Michael Sarnoski, hats off to you sir. The pacing, the way you put the story together visually, your heartbreaking script, just so well done. I hope they release the shooting script because I would love to read it and see the words (or lack of) that Joe and Lupita interpreted so movingly. I wonder if Michael has processed the death of a parent recently, because I felt so much emotion from this story. This film is about accepting the inevitability of death, while going through the five stages of grief, yet seeking to live fully regardless. Trigger warning: DO NOT see this movie if you are going through a rough time with someone who is terminally ill. It will wreck you. But this film is tragically, beautifully human. To deliver that story in a Hollywood big budget action film is a hat trick. Every actor in Hollywood who wants to grow creatively should be calling their agents asking to work with Michael Sarnoski right now.
Also, shout out to the production design people. They completely suspended my disbelief that the characters weren't in New York. Set design, lighting, like I could SMELL New York. Virtual production is getting so fucking good - we're well past the Unreal Wall vistas of the Mandalorian. If you ask yourself how A24 could shoot an Iraq war movie in the pastoral hills of England this is your answer.
Now, the not so good.
Go back and watch the first and second trailers and tell me how many of those moments were in the movie. Answer: barely any.
Map claw hand? We have to get out of the city? Gay couple? Old man turning off engine? Nada.
So, was this all misdirection in the marketing, making the audience think they were coming to see a summer action movie? That's legit, trying to get butts in seats, but I have a strong feeling Michael delivered a very different movie that was hacked up in the testing process. All of those scenes probably made the movie feel 'too long', and they had to cut them back to balance the action sequences with the emotional sequences.
The helicopters overhead spelling out THEY CAN'T SWIM probably came from focus group comments where someone was like 'why didn't the aliens just cross the river and start eating people in New Jersey?' (good point). But I'll bet you they wanted to give Alex Wolff's character a more significant death in regard to Samira's emotional journey, so they reshot the scene with the old man turning off the engine and had Alex do it instead.
Also, I get the strong feeling Eric showed up in the story much earlier in the original cut of the film, and the scene with Map Claw Hand illustrates that. The big question regarding Eric is why this random sad British dude gloms on to Samira and I'm not sure they answer that question in the final cut. Joe absolutely sells it, but it doesn't make sense and I suspect it's because it wasn't written that way.
Also, and call me crazy, but I think Joe is wearing a wig in some parts of this movie and not in other parts. It would make sense if there were significant reshoots based on early testing of the film. I wonder if the Alien Lava Tiki Bar (what...was that actually) scene was added later. Like, I get why Eric went up there- actually I don't, I think Eric would have been focused on getting the medicine back to her and wouldn't have taken a detour up scaffolding to follow I cat at all, but that's just me.
Finally, let's talk about the cat. Both Schnitzel and Nico are exquisite and enjoyable to watch, though how no one got scratched or bitten by a disgruntled feline is a mystery. We had a long debate about whether The Cat Represents Samira's Life, or The Cat is An Angel, or Fate, but ultimately we just went with KITTY and that made the story more enjoyable.
Samira is on a quest, to die on her terms, and once she accepts her fate, she sheds the things that no longer matter to her, and in the process gives Eric a purpose. The scene in the jazz bar was so moving. The final shot is also incredibly moving, and I hope the city was filled with the sound of music one last time, a beautiful elegy accompanying her soul to heaven.
Bravo.

How Jimin And Jung Kook’s Road Trip Became ‘Are You Sure?!’
Before enlisting for the mandatory military duty required of all able-bodied South Korean males, BTS members Jimin and Jung Kook wanted to take one more road trip and film that trip so fans could virtually tag along.
(…) Naming the show was a collaborative effort between the k-pop idols and the production team, but, according to director Jun Soo Park, the title was inspired by a question Jimin asked more than once.
“It was thanks to Jimin, who kept asking, 'Are You Sure?!' throughout the filming, that the final title came to be Are You Sure?!” said Park.
The itinerary includes a trip to the U.S., then Korea’s Jeju Island then Sapporo, Japan, but the plan did not originally cover that much of the globe. First, the production team suggested a trip to the U.S. because Jimin and Jung Kook had never been there for a casual trip.
“When they set off for the States, they had no plans for the second or third locations—Jeju Island and Sapporo,” said Park. “They were disappointed to end the trip in the States and also wanted to do something more as a gift to fans. With that in mind, they proposed the idea to continue the trip to Jeju Island and Japan. After starting with the States, they went on a trip to the other locations at intervals of two to three months.”
Before beginning the trip, the production team asked Jimin and Jung Kook if there were any food or activities they wanted to try in those regions. They then used the answers to design the itinerary, acting as travel guides to prepare various options the BTS members could choose from.
“It is a reality show which fully reflects the two members’ ideas,” said Park. “Right from the start, the show was developed very much in collaboration with Jimin and Jung Kook, who actively shared their thoughts on the locations and activities they wanted to explore.”
While cast and crew tried to avoid attracting attention, it’s hard to be as famous as BTS and not be recognized by someone. Occasionally they were. However, being recognized did not present any problems thanks to the fans that respectfully gave them space.

Introduction
For my first post, i just want to introduce the most common uses of AI in the fashion industry as of right now, as it is something that has been growing since 2023, and even more in 2024 as it is a tool being integrated in many parts of the industry.
Sustainability - AI have been helping a lot with waste control in the fashion industry, as it is one of the most pollutive contributes, AI can control fabric and water waste, pollution and carbon emissions by measuring environmental metrics during garment production.
AR - One of the biggest news in online shopping is the augmented reality-based shopping tool which makes clients be able to try and experience the garments and accessories virtually almost as if they are in person, something Burberry already implemented in their online shopping experience, making a more inclusive space for online shoppers who can't see themselves in the base models used by companies to showcase their items.
Creativity and Design - Some brands already started using AI tools to to create new designs that appeal to their customers using a trained AI with millions of research and inspiration from the brand themselves to create new designs, silhouettes, color palettes and more. FIT students already worked with AI in classes to create designs and explore the tool and creativity.
Trend Forecasting - For a long time people in the industry had to analyze and study fashion runways, street fashion and pop culture to predict trends a year ahead, and now with AI that can be made in a more quick and efficient way with AI being able to analyze all those things AND millions of social media posts, sales and search data to make trend forecasting easier and more accurate.
Photoshoots - Photography and fashion have always walked side by side, and now with AI is no different, companies can use AI to create new and exciting ways to express art, fashion and photography. The AI in this case is used to enhance the experience, push boundaries and redefine the concept of fashion photoshoots, one example is Vogue Italia's May 2024 with Bella Hadid.

Catherine Borowski has always had an active imagination. As a child, she dreamed that the car park on her north London council estate would be transformed into a garden. The reality was quite different. “No one had a car, so it was empty, grey and depressing,” she says. Now a sculptor and event producer, Borowski has made it her mission to fill unloved urban spaces with flowers – albeit virtual ones. 
She and her partner Lee Baker are the founders of Graphic Rewilding, a project to install huge nature-inspired artworks into the urban landscape. “Where real rewilding isn’t possible, our goal is to inject the colour and diversity of nature into rundown spaces, urging people to notice – and find joy in – the world around them,” says Baker.   
The pair believe that flowers possess serious powers, even when they’re not real. “We know that spending time in nature is good for us, but studies show that even pictures of plants have a positive effect on the mind,” says Baker. He cites research published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, which found that imagery of plants in hospital waiting rooms can help reduce feelings of stress in patients. 
Baker, a painter and music producer, has long understood the benefits of biophilic design. Having suffered a breakdown 10 years ago, he found that drawing flowers was the only way to soothe his buzzy brain. “I would set out to draw dystopian landscapes, representative of my state of mind, but I’d always end up drawing flowers, which uplifted me,” he says.
It was around this time that Baker met Borowski, joining her production company as creative director. The pair have collaborated ever since, launching Graphic Rewilding in 2021. Since then, they’ve installed floral murals at locations including Earl’s Court station, Lewes Castle and Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush – all hand drawn by Baker. “We love galleries, but we focus on public art,” he says. “This way, our work is out there for everyone to enjoy.”
This year the pair have grand plans to create a series of stained glass pavilions (think greenhouses with colourful floral-themed panels), which they hope might find homes at Kew Gardens and the Eden Project. “The way light shines through the glass is magical,” says Borowski.  
Even so, they concede that art is no match for Mother Nature. “Some people have suggested that our project detracts from real rewilding efforts. But both can co-exist,” says Borowski. “Of course we want more green spaces.” adds Baker. “But we aren’t gardeners. We’re artists. In the absence of nature, we want to create inspiring spaces through art.”
Overall, the response has been hugely positive. “The joy that these artworks bring is palpable,” says Baker, highlighting an early project in Crawley, West Sussex. “Many people in the town were employed by Gatwick airport and Covid had taken its toll,” he recalls. In a bid to spread some joy, the duo painted brick walls, billboards, benches and even bins with their signature floral flair. “Peoples’ reactions were heartwarming. There were so many smiling faces,” he says.
Elsewhere, in Earl’s Court, the pair transformed “a ratty piece of tarmac” into a modern-day pleasure garden, which is now often filled with children dancing and doing cartwheels on the way home from school. “Putting art into a place that previously felt unloved feels like cultivating joy where there was none,” reflects Borowski. “If something like this had been installed on my estate when I was a kid, it would have been a dream come true.”

Building better infrared sensors: Novel photodiode design boosts responsivity
Detecting infrared light is critical in an enormous range of technologies, from remote controls to autofocus systems to self-driving cars and virtual reality headsets. That means there would be major benefits from improving the efficiency of infrared sensors, such as photodiodes. Researchers at Aalto University have developed a new type of infrared photodiode that is 35% more responsive at 1.55 µm, the key wavelength for telecommunications, compared to other germanium-based components. Importantly, this new device can be manufactured using current production techniques, making it highly practical for adoption. "It took us eight years from the idea to proof-of-concept," says Hele Savin, a professor at Aalto University.
