My thoughts on AQPDO
So, did this image appear in the actual film? Yeah, that's what I thought...
I loved it, and I was disappointed by it. This is long, so buckle in. Major Spoilers discussed below.
First, the outstanding: the performances. Holy hell. Lupita. Just...her talent is breathtaking. To sustain that level of intensity without overdoing it, I am simply in awe. Well done. I hope some attention is paid to her performance when award season rolls around. Ditto Alex Wolff. He did a LOT with so little screentime. Djimon too; they all were so, so moving.
Joe was so heartbreaking, and yet Joe's character is one of the things I am disappointed about, because I needed more. Not because I love Joe, but because the story needed it. I know there was a backstory that was cut, and to be honest I don't think that was necessarily a poor decision, but the issue is it was cut late in the creative process, versus in the writing, and that is where the problem is. More on that in a bit, but Joe delivered a sensitive and moving performance, and really understated as well. Not a bit of the cheeky Joe we have come to love so much that also I think pops out in Eddie and Michael occasionally. He was wholly immersed in Eric's reality and his energy complimented Lupita's so well; you can see how much they worked off each other. Dare I say she elevated his game. Another marathon performance and I can imagine how exhausting it must be to sustain that.
Second, Michael Sarnoski, hats off to you sir. The pacing, the way you put the story together visually, your heartbreaking script, just so well done. I hope they release the shooting script because I would love to read it and see the words (or lack of) that Joe and Lupita interpreted so movingly. I wonder if Michael has processed the death of a parent recently, because I felt so much emotion from this story. This film is about accepting the inevitability of death, while going through the five stages of grief, yet seeking to live fully regardless. Trigger warning: DO NOT see this movie if you are going through a rough time with someone who is terminally ill. It will wreck you. But this film is tragically, beautifully human. To deliver that story in a Hollywood big budget action film is a hat trick. Every actor in Hollywood who wants to grow creatively should be calling their agents asking to work with Michael Sarnoski right now.
Also, shout out to the production design people. They completely suspended my disbelief that the characters weren't in New York. Set design, lighting, like I could SMELL New York. Virtual production is getting so fucking good - we're well past the Unreal Wall vistas of the Mandalorian. If you ask yourself how A24 could shoot an Iraq war movie in the pastoral hills of England this is your answer.
Now, the not so good.
Go back and watch the first and second trailers and tell me how many of those moments were in the movie. Answer: barely any.
Map claw hand? We have to get out of the city? Gay couple? Old man turning off engine? Nada.
So, was this all misdirection in the marketing, making the audience think they were coming to see a summer action movie? That's legit, trying to get butts in seats, but I have a strong feeling Michael delivered a very different movie that was hacked up in the testing process. All of those scenes probably made the movie feel 'too long', and they had to cut them back to balance the action sequences with the emotional sequences.
The helicopters overhead spelling out THEY CAN'T SWIM probably came from focus group comments where someone was like 'why didn't the aliens just cross the river and start eating people in New Jersey?' (good point). But I'll bet you they wanted to give Alex Wolff's character a more significant death in regard to Samira's emotional journey, so they reshot the scene with the old man turning off the engine and had Alex do it instead.
Also, I get the strong feeling Eric showed up in the story much earlier in the original cut of the film, and the scene with Map Claw Hand illustrates that. The big question regarding Eric is why this random sad British dude gloms on to Samira and I'm not sure they answer that question in the final cut. Joe absolutely sells it, but it doesn't make sense and I suspect it's because it wasn't written that way.
Also, and call me crazy, but I think Joe is wearing a wig in some parts of this movie and not in other parts. It would make sense if there were significant reshoots based on early testing of the film. I wonder if the Alien Lava Tiki Bar (what...was that actually) scene was added later. Like, I get why Eric went up there- actually I don't, I think Eric would have been focused on getting the medicine back to her and wouldn't have taken a detour up scaffolding to follow I cat at all, but that's just me.
Finally, let's talk about the cat. Both Schnitzel and Nico are exquisite and enjoyable to watch, though how no one got scratched or bitten by a disgruntled feline is a mystery. We had a long debate about whether The Cat Represents Samira's Life, or The Cat is An Angel, or Fate, but ultimately we just went with KITTY and that made the story more enjoyable.
Samira is on a quest, to die on her terms, and once she accepts her fate, she sheds the things that no longer matter to her, and in the process gives Eric a purpose. The scene in the jazz bar was so moving. The final shot is also incredibly moving, and I hope the city was filled with the sound of music one last time, a beautiful elegy accompanying her soul to heaven.
Bravo.

Went and saw Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim tonight for date night. Was a good movie. Speaking as someone who knows only minor bits about the overall LOTR histories/universe, I really enjoyed it. The animation was gorgeous and, I think, had some animation over actual scenery at least at the start if not a few spots throughout.
The story at its heart is about a father and daughter and the love they have for each other, their family, and their people. The voice acting was spot on with a couple surprise voices popping up. While there were some story threads that were just kinda there to help move things along, they didn't detract or bog the story down. They might have wider implications if you know more of the lore but, as I do not, they were just there.
Music throughout had undertones and main themes from the original Peter Jackson films as well as new music and sings. Paris Paloma had one of the main end themes/songs so that was cool. Definitely going to add the soundteack to my collection.
Overall, a good way to spend a rainy evening and a good edition to the LOTR films that are out there.

Tolkien. E, veja só, eu estava certa! Recentemente, a cantora lançou o single The Rider para a trilha de The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
De volta ao álbum, as faixas que mais se destacaram para mim foram:
Labour: Já mencionei que é minha favorita? Pois bem, continuo obcecada.
Last Woman on Earth: Para mim, essa música aborda a objetificação dos corpos femininos. Como já dizia Simone de Beauvoir, "não se nasce mulher: torna-se." O verso "Leave me to the beasts and bears, I'd rather that the feast was theirs." me lembrou a trend do man vs bear, e, sinceramente, também prefiro o urso!

A Kpop Fan’s Favorite Alternative Music
Though this is a k-pop blog, first and foremost, I enjoy music from all around the world, in a dozen different languages. So here are those albums, if you’re interested! This page is alternative, from Lana Del Rey to Florence + The Machine.
(For all best albums, click here)
(For all non-Kpop, click here)
Alternative is a large genre, but tends towards understated; light and ethereal, drifting in and out of your ears, often with a comforting message. Think Generation by Triple S, Life Goes On by BTS, or Palette by IU.

okay obviously this is bomb but legit makes me tear up with the repeat chorus (or maybe that’s a bridge...) -- as someone who’s a minority gender, socialized as a woman, that laundry list of roles just builds into this devastation of tamped down potential and dismissal and oneself’s lost... it gives me this deep sadness that hardens into fury but gets extinguished a chorus too soon
if that was repeated one more time, louder and with the war drums amped up... pretty sure i’d riot

paris paloma
paris paloma's music is going in an interesting direction. she's putting out more singles (of "boys, bugs and men" and "the warmth") ahead of the release of her album, cacophony, and it seems to switch between heavily produced vocal/choral arrangements with the tribal, anthemic beats that propelled her first single, labour, onto the world stage via social media, and very acoustic, minimally produced songs. it's an interesting dichotomy, still capturing the rawness of what made labour so special, but sometimes without the evocative literary references (circe and the Odyssey in particular) that set it apart from a lot of pop, putting her almost in comparison with some recent hozier works like unreal unearth with its dante's inferno and jonathan swift references.
I don't think she's got any new algorithm-breaking single on the album, but she has a lot of songs that appeal to medieval/fantasy aesthetics and often delving into witchy, pagan styles (especially on "the warmth").
I think also labour was pretty digestible at a first listen, with more layers to peel back on repeat listens, which doesn't really happen on her recent singles. they're either too face value or too obscure/complex to attain mainstream success.
#my post#Paris paloma#music#i think she would be good at composing national anthems.#review#rambling#criticism welcomed

paloma: first meeting
— simon "ghost" riley x oc!silentdove reyes.
summary: he's not annoyed, per se, but ghost is just not really in the mood to chit-chat with the american airman scurrying around the base. at best, he tolerates them.
(or the first exchange between ghost and his montanan woman.)
warnings: none, aside from explicit language.
note: okay, so despite this being an obvious OC-insert series, i invite anyone and everyone to read it :D this is actually my first time tackling an OC-insert fanfic (as well as writing ghost) so im still trying to get the rhythm of things.

paloma (masterlist) | main masterlist
[2021]
Simon Riley won’t ever admit it — never aloud, anyway — but every time he steps foot on American soil, he feels more akin to a wolf draped in sheep’s clothing.
In his mind, he sticks out like a sore thumb. He is not a hero, really; unlike the lot teetering around the military base he is currently stationed at for the next five or so weeks, he is less flesh and blood, and more a phantom. Or something along those lines. Actually, that could explain why there is such little traffic aimed his way. But he doesn’t particularly care. His schedule lacks the room to voice any complaints.
Right now, his main concern is doing his job, and doing it right.
Two weeks back, Price had him fishing out his passport tucked away inside his bedside table. “Fancy a two month getaway to the States?” Great Falls, Montana, to be exact. High west, nearing the border of Canada, and surrounded by land he’s only ever seen in those silly ass spaghetti western movies.
The view is nice, he’ll admit. Beautiful, even. Exhilarating. He now understands why they refer to Montana as “Big Sky Country.”
Malmstrom is much smaller than he imagined, and homier too. The Air Force base is nestled within the city’s east side, offering its own museum and park. He’s quite grateful for the latter; the trails allow for his nighttime walks when the nightmares prove too shitty to sleep.
Great Falls is pretty as well. Price would like it, maybe Garrick too. He knows the two are big on history, and almost every inch of the city is drenched with some memory belonging to the old frontier days.
Upon arriving, the yanks provided him with his own private office, housed in the back of the 341st logistics readiness squadron. It’s nothin’ fancy, really, just a wee room furnished with a dark mahogany desk, two windows, a steel cabinet, the Montana flag to his left, and the American to his right.
Again, he’s not one to complain. Something’s something.
Earlier, one of the higher-up airmen, a Staff Sergeant Benson (he believes is the name), had handed him a folder jam-packed with a shit ton of mission statements — logistics, strategic planning, reports of previous global concerns, and reviews of the base’s Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. All the documents are dated in a time range varying between two months ago to 0800 this morning.
In the back of his mind, he can already hear Price chuckling.
“Have fun, Simon.”
Bloody bastard.
So now, Ghost sits hunched over the desk, feeling a little too damn big for it. All the paperwork is strewn about messily around him, with sticky notes, a pen, and some other random shit of his. No one has yet to visit him; until that happens, he feels little need to remain organized.
His boot taps against the floor. “—Initial efforts to clean polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from launch facilities at Malmstrom AFB are ongoing but seeing success…” Ghost reads under his breath. PCBs? That’s nice to hear.
“...after PCBs were detected on surfaces in launch facilities at all three of the command’s missile wings.”
PCBs. Polychlorinated biphenyls — man-made and highly toxic, consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine atoms. He clicks his tongue, shaking his head as he flips onto the next page.
“We know they’re present on what appears to be otherwise pristine surfaces, due to the survey—”
—a sudden knock interrupts his reading.
With a curse on his tongue, Ghost sets down the report. He quicks a sneaking glance at his watch. 1342 hours. He’s due in a meeting at 1700.
“Come in.” His voice sounds low and raspy, the two words sounding more like a growl than a greeting. He’s not annoyed, per se, but Ghost is just not really in the mood to chit-chat with the American airmen scurrying around the base. At best, he tolerates them.
(In his mind, they’re all little Graves, ready to stir up a headache.)
The door slowly cracks open.
“Lieutenant Riley?” A female voice calls out — soft and cautious; Ghost’s chin drops against his knuckles. “Apologies for the disruption, sir, but I have some additional paperwork I need to drop off with you, at the request of my superior.” He grunts, and the airman then steps into his office, quickly shutting the door behind her before meeting his eyes.
It is entirely unlike him, Ghost knows, but his brain almost short-circuits right then and there. Two dark brown eyes, framed by thick lashes, peering up at him. Shit. He’d always thought brown was such a pretty eye color on a woman, but hers stretched further across common compliments.
Both of ‘em — they held no animosity, no uneasiness or fear, nothing.
That, itself, is quite fucking bizarre. He’s not used to that.
Ghost is .... well, Ghost. He knows the mask he is always donning on his face isn't exactly a sign of welcomeness. Just his mere presence is enough to startle the living shit out of rookies, baby recruits, wide-eyed sergeants, and the like. There is something inherently unnerving when you are unable to get a good reading of the person you're standing across from.
She’s brave, he thinks. Or merely oblivious to who he is.
“Here you go, sir,” the airman says while placing the packet of new documents down on his desk. Her lips are shaped prettily, plump and shining with a fresh layer of gloss, and across her nose is a splatter of faint freckles. Under a different circumstance, maybe he would’ve taken the time to try and count them all.
Ghost swallows hard, incapable (for what feels like the first time in his life) of mustering up an appropriate reply. “Ah, thank you, ma’am.”
The airman's brow lifts.
“Reyes,” she then corrects him with a kind smile, gesturing to the name badge sitting above her right chest pocket. Sure enough, in bold military lettering, reads Reyes. “My name is Senior Airman SilentDove Reyes. I am actually a cryptologic linguist analyst here on base; but sometimes I run errands for others, when not needed for a translation, of course.”
There is a slight chirp in her voice that Ghost picks up, along with the way she casually rocks back and forth on her feet. She seems awfully young, no older than 22, possibly 23, but even that's cutting it; a kid, compared to him. Maybe 5'7, with dark hair pulled back into two tight braids that fall at her belted waistline.
A stark contrast compared to him.
He's oddly curious now — about her age and first name and those long braids and why she stands before him, calm, collected, and sure — but he knows damn well this is not the time nor place for any questions. Both of them are on the clock, and it is likely she’ll need to report back to her supervisor soon.
He offers her a curt nod. “Well, thank you again, Reyes,” he states, keeping his voice flat.
“You are welcome, sir.” She turns to leave, but when her hand latches onto the doorknob, Reyes glances over her shoulder at him, “—oh, and Lieutenant? If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”

He knows his mind is wandering off, in desperate search of that pretty senior airman from fifteen minutes ago. “Bloody fucking hell,” Ghost grumbles, leaning back in his chair. His head lolls back as he blinks upward, studying the ceiling overhead. The texture is popcorn, a creamy color, with a simple fan jutting down. One light bulb, probably a recent replacement.
Fuck. He doesn’t need this shit. Not one bit.
Five more weeks and he’ll be gone from here.
Ghost rechecks his watch, feeling a bit peeved at the time. 1411. He has several more hours until he can leave all this work shit behind for the evening, and maybe catch a short walk before hunkering down for the night. He doesn’t like sitting down for too long; it causes him to become restless. Agitated. Overthinking.
He doesn’t want distractions. He doesn’t need ‘em. Distractions ruin work ethic; clouding up the mind while fucking up all sense of responsibility. Price will have his ass if he – somehow – becomes compromised. And he'll never hear the end of it from Johnny.
Settling back into the paperwork, he decides that he won’t allow himself another second thinking about all that – the American airman and her pretty brown eyes and high cheekbones and first name.
Something tells him that’s easier said than done.
