Canada Was 'Highly Confident' It Heard Man-Made Noises During Search For Titan Submersible, Documents Show
Reported Banging Kept Hope Going Days After Vessel Was Likely Destroyed

Canada's military was "highly confident" for days in June 2023 that bangs heard underwater while searching for the missing Titan submersible were man made â by an object striking the hull of a vessel â near the famous Titanic wreck site, CBC News has learned.
Those noises helped keep hope going that the five wealthy explorers on board the missing vessel were still alive during the multi-day, multi-national search, even though it is now believed the vessel imploded within hours of going into the water.
Now internal government documents obtained by CBC News through the Access to Information Act reveal more details about what the Canadian Coast Guard privately documented during the search, including where a military patrol plane first heard the banging on June 19, the day after the Titan went missing.
The Royal Canadian Air Force's CP-140 Aurora heard multiple "bangs that they are highly confident are manmade by an object striking a hull," read multiple daily internal notices written by the Canadian Coast Guard between June 19 and June 22.
"They believe the sound originated from near [Titanic's] wreck site at a depth of approximately 10,000 feet."
That "sensitive information" was included in more than a dozen internal emails and updates to officials at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) that CBC News obtained, and all the way up to Jody Thomas, the prime minister's national security adviser at the time.
U.S. Searched Area Where Sounds Were Heard
U.S. officials who were leading the search efforts confirmed on June 21 the sounds had been heard and sent a remotely operated vehicle to search that area.
The search was called off on June 22 when debris from the Titan was found, the same day the Wall Street Journal first reported the U.S. navy's top-secret system used to track enemy submarines had detected what it suspected was the Titan's implosion just hours after the vessel began its voyage.
That information was shared with the U.S.'s search team, but U.S, officials told American media there were no other indications of a catastrophe, so they made the decision to continue the search efforts.
CBS later reported a U.S. navy analysis determined the banging noises were most likely noise from other search ships or ocean sounds.
What unfolded underwater is still at the centre of a U.S. investigation, with public hearings scheduled for next month. The Canadian Coast Guard referred CBC News's request for comment about the documents to Canada's defence department, which has yet to provide a comment about the sounds it detected.
Four of the five people onboard the Titan were Pierre-Henri Nargeolet, top left; Shahzada Dawood, top right; whose son Suleman was also on board; Hamish Harding, bottom left; and Stockton Rush, bottom right. (Getty, Reuters)
Noises Weren't From Titan: Retired Sonar Operator
Roger Draper, a recently retired Petty Officer Second Class Sonar Operator from the Royal Canadian Navy, contacted CBC News after the story was first posted.
Draper, who was not involved in search efforts for the Titan, said no one he personally spoke to at the navy's fleet school in Halifax where he was teaching at the time, actually thought the five crew members were alive.
He said the Titan was 10,000 feet underwater and the only way the military could have picked up any sort of communication from the Titan was if the submersible was equipped with a loud communication device. If crew members were banging from inside the submersible, it wouldn't have been detected, he said.
"I don't think anyone was under the illusion someone was ringing the submersible like a bell and everybody could hear it," Draper said. "I think they heard mechanical noises and they told the Coast Guard who was running the show."
He said it's "very common" for sonar operators to hear mechanical noises underwater, and the banging detected heard could have been coming from oil rigs off the coast of Newfoundland, a submersed pipeline, or other vessels.
"I think it was a very deliberate decision to state the mechanical noises were heard, even though the belief on the ground would have been there was no one who survived that," said Draper, who noted that he had served the military for more than two decades as a sonar operator working to find mostly submarines and ships underwater using sound.
He said Canada's military would have dropped devices into the ocean during the search that make loud continuous electronic noise with a high and low tone that can last about 20 minutes.
If anyone was alive underwater they would have very clearly heard that noise, he said, adding the military would have also dropped sonobuoys into the ocean. These devices act as an underwater microphone to pick up any sound detected in response.
There's "no question" the sounds the military heard were manmade, Draper said, but Canada should have made it very clear publicly during the search that they didn't think the sounds were coming from the Titan so people didn't get their hopes up.
'We Just Have To Remain Optimistic'
The documents obtained by CBC News show the minister's office responsible for the Canadian Coast Guard emailed sent on June 21 asking what they could tell the public about media reports that a Canadian aircraft had heard banging noises.
A senior official with the Canadian Coast Guard responded saying the minister at the time, Joyce Murray, could tell the public there's still hope.
"Yes the Minister can make reference to the banging noises heard," Marc Mes, director general of fleet and maritime services with the Canadian Coast Guard, responded on June 21. "Something along the lines of: Acoustic equipment and sensors on scene including from Canadian Air Force aircraft have detected potential banging sounds, indicating continued hope of locating the submersible.
Murray told reporters that day "we just have to remain optimistic."
"We have to keep working until we find the submersible," Murray told reporters on June 21. "We will continue to double down and to figure out where the submersible is and how it can be brought to the surface."

The family of French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who died in the 2023 implosion of a submersible bound for the Titanic, has sued OceanGate for $50 million US, accusing the sub's operator of âpersistent carelessness, recklessness and negligence.â 2:04
'Irreversible Failures'
The family of one of the victims â French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, known as "Mr. Titanic" â launched a $50-million lawsuit earlier this week alleging he died due to gross negligence by Titan's U.S. operator and manufacturer OceanGate Expeditions and other defendants.
The suit claims all five people on board knew they were going to die before the implosion because an "acoustic safety system" onboard the Titan "would have alerted the crew that the carbon-fibre hull was crackling under extreme pressure."
"They would have continued to descend, in full knowledge of the vessel's irreversible failures, experiencing terror and mental anguish prior to the Titan ultimately imploding," the lawsuit alleges.
But U.S. investigators haven't found any signs the five crew members had any warning the submersible's implosion was going to take their lives, the New York Times reported.
OceanGate suspended all operations after the disaster and declined CBC's request for comment on the lawsuit's allegations.
Unconventional Construction
CBC News obtained more than 600 pages of internal emails, memos and reports from the DFO, which runs the coast guard, from an access to information request. The documents, prepared for top officials, also detail how deeply Canada was involved in the high-profile search and offer new insight into what unfolded behind the scenes from a Canadian perspective.
Canada was involved in the U.S.-led search efforts because the Titan submersible left on a Canadian-flagged vesselâ the Polar Prince â from St. John's on June 18, 2023. Later that day, it lost contact with the Polar Prince, about an hour and 45 minutes into its descent to the Titanic.
From the start, the coast guard flagged the search as a high priority and said "no matter how trivial" the Atlantic Canada team should flag all updates to Ottawa because there was "high interest" from senior management, a June 19 email said.
Those updates included warning that Titan's carbon fibre shell "does not create a good radar target."
The implosion raised questions about the Titan's unconventional construction, including its use of carbon fibre for its roomier cylinder-shaped cabin, which was different from many submersibles' titanium, spherical cabins.
An investigation by CBC's The Fifth Estate and the Radio-Canada's EnquĂȘte uncovered new information about the doomed sub, including how OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush had boasted about breaking basic engineering rules and how, for three years, his experimental submersible was allowed to leave a Canadian port without any oversight to carry passengers to the Titanic. Rush was among those killed.
A report by the coast guard noted it was not "classified by any regulatory body" and had "defects/issues."
The wreck of the Titanic, which sank in 1912, is some 3,800 metres below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, about 596 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland. (Atlantic Productions/The Associated Press)
Canada brought in specialized equipment, including a hyperbaric chamber and technicians, to support any dive operations, along with advanced sonar equipment to search at significant water depths, the documents said.
Canada's defence department told CBC News in May it estimates it spent more than $2.4 million in operational costs to help in the search.
The coast guard estimates its efforts totalled more than $600,000. Both departments say those figures are not additional expenses, but part of budgeted operational costs to help respond to distress calls.
The high-profile search led to questions about who should pay for such efforts.
Canada's Transportation Safety Board is also investigating and is currently writing a report on its findings.

i gotta say the one answer they gave during the panel that like lowkey concerned me was when they said theres no clear for the showâs ending currently ,like i knowthat as serious and consistent rnm is at the end of the day its still just like a sitcom style show, and im sure the ending will be fine (even if a bit underwhelming because to be honest at this point how could it not be with everything else considered) but i dunno it just made me sort of sad? to hear like damn
#WHATEVER i goddamn hate being negative Ever even if itâs constructive#what im not really as concerned about is the statement abt wanting it to go on forever#this is gonna be an unconventional take from me but i like shows that just go on too long and overstay their welcome and i kinda think rnm#Could be one of those!!! potentially!!! but part of the reason why im not 2 worried about it at all is#its. probably not even possible for the show lol. like i thought s10 was gonna be the last one i really doubt that it can just keep getting#renewed it is Not the most positively regarded show in the world ya know#thats all my Actual commentary back to fanboying squeeing etc

stanford!artdonaldson x sportsjournalist!reader
summary: assigned to write a profile of stanford's rising tennis star, you get to know art better. much better.
warnings: smut, dry humping, b0ner alert, implied consent
a/n: this does have a *hint* of art x patrick x reader undertones at the end! any (constructive) feedback is appreciated :)
you get the message as you exit the lecture hall and head to the cafeteria for lunch. âother writers are busy. can you take the art donaldson profile?â reads the text from your editor. having written for the stanford daily as a sports reporter for the past year, youâre no stranger to turning a dull interview with a rather dim-witted football player into an oh-so-riveting piece. however, this is out of your comfort zone.
tennis isâŠboring. sure, youâd happily tagged along to a couple of tashi duncanâs matches, unwilling to pass up the opportunity to see an olympic-bound athlete in her prime, but it isnât your ideal way to spend a saturday afternoon.Â
and yet, that is exactly what you are doing. the donaldson interview is lined up for directly after his match with a ucla player. âheâs got a tight schedule, so we need to accommodate him,â said your editor when you questioned why you had to sit through a match and then manage to cram in an interview in the menâs fucking lockerroom.Â
art donaldson is a year above you, living in the same dorm. you recognize most athletes at this pointâin part because theyâre constantly (obnoxiously) sporting team merch, and because of your jobâbut art is known by most for his friendship with tashi duncan. neither are particularly social, keeping their circle tight amongst fellow tennis players, both at stanford and professionals.Â
itâs difficult not to stick out in the bleachers. while other players, including a brown-haired boy cheering quite loudly, observe the game, itâs by no means packed. as donaldson pauses for water after the first set, he catches your gaze, giving an awkward wave in acknowledgement as he wipes the sweat from his face. you silently pray that he knows youâre the reporter heâs supposed to speak to, and doesnât just think youâre some crazed tashi duncan fangirl.Â
his playing is statuesque, long limbs sweeping across the court (but not entirely stripped of the boyish energy that defined his success as a high school student). after beating his opponent 2-0, donaldson steps off the court, dramatically embraced by the brown-haired spectator, who you have since realized is his former doubles partner, patrick zweig, and you take this as a signal to get this interview started before he becomes swept up in celebrations.Â
climbing down the bleachers, you see art duck down into the hallway, making his way into the locker rooms. in all your time as a sports reporter, you hadnât had such anâŠunconventional⊠interview location, and you feel a bit sick as the sound of the shower draws closer.Â
âart donaldson?â you say, standing just outside the open door of the locker room.Â
âyeahâ he calls back, as though he was expecting you, but not entirely welcoming the intrusion. the shower turns off, and the soft sound of his steps on the tiles echo. âwell, come in,â he calls again.Â
you step into the steam-filled space with your eyes directed down. âi understand you have physical therapy shortly, so iâll try to keep this quickâ,â you say, taken aback as you finally draw your eyes upward. heâs managed to pull on a pair of checkered boxers, fabric sticking to his still-damp body.Â
you canât imagine you look particularly composed, hair sticking to your face from the steam with a burning blush spread across your cheeks. you watch as art bites his cheek and awkwardly motions for you to sit on the bench across from him as he methodically changes the overgrip on his racket.Â
âso,â you say, clearing your throat, âhow did you first become interested in tennis?â he glances up from his task. âmy parents needed someone to watch me, and my grandma was busy, so they stuck me in a local tennis camp. i doubt they realized that they were signing up for over a decade of tennis running myâand theirâlives.â
you hum in agreement. âand what specific areas of your game are you hoping to improve on this season?â you follow up. his gaze becomes more intentâmore focused. setting the racket to his side, art stands, before quickly realizing heâs still only boxer-clad. you stare at the opposite wall, hoping to save him the embarrassment, and you see him fumble to slip on shorts out of the corner of your eye. he clears his throat. â â um â yeah, iâm trying to get faster on my feet. sorry, iââ he says, before you cut him off in protest. âno, no, i should have given you a moment to clean up after your match, itâs my fault,â you say, rising off of the bench awkwardly, avoiding his gaze.Â
but with the lingering steam, and your downward gaze, your fumble to exit the locker room instead lands you into direct contact with his chest. âshit! sorry,â you exclaim, drawing your chin up. a wash of heat cascades from your head, nipples taut, despite the warmth of the room, as your body reacts to the sudden proximity. art is equally flushed, pink lips slightly parted and chest rocking as he concentrates on breathing deeply, trying to lower his racing heart. you can smell him, fresh with a hint of that post-game sweat, a droplet of water falling from a blonde curl.Â
he brings a calloused hand to your hair, brushing it behind your shoulder, as if to ask permission. the slight nod and glaze of your tongue over your lips is enough for him to understand, his breath heavy against your face as your noses are close enough to touch. that final centimeter is finally closed, and itâs as though air rushes back into you while inhibition is tossed out. without thinking, your hair tangles into his mess of damp hair, and you feel his soft moan against your lips. you gasp as his hand grabs your ass, drawing you into contact with his erection (for how much of that interview was he hard?).Â
âyouâahâyou have physical th-therapy,â you say, breathless as he works his mouth down your jaw and neck. âjustâŠfive more minutes,â he says in between kisses, like a teenager wishing to sleep in, causing you to chuckle. bringing your left knee up, your hips are suddenly flush against his, and the new contact sends you both reeling, his cock twitching in his shorts. you tentatively rock, again, against his groin, and you both seem to realize that that hit the spot. pushing your back against a locker, art draws his groin against yours again, and again, his soft pants becoming near whimpers as your lips meet for a desperate, sloppy kiss.Â
youâre lost in the rhythm the two of you have found, ignoring the rattle of the lockers with each thrust. fuck youâre embarrassingly close (thatâs what a two month dry spell will do for you) but before you have to worry about coming too early, you hear his strangled voice in your ear. â â f-fuck, s-sorry iâm close, was so pent up.â before youâre able to reply, your body has taken this as permission to let the orgasm wash over you at last. still reeling from your own orgasm, you feel the warm spread of artâs cum seep through the thin fabric of his shorts, as he continues to rut against you.Â
bringing your arms up to hurriedly fix your now-tangled hair, you draw away from art. a fresh blush comes to your cheeks at the realization of how silly you feel, grinding like a pubescent teen. art seems tired, yes, but not embarrassed, slipping off his pants and boxers and replacing them with clean ones. before heâs got his wits back, youâre out the door, praying no one managed to overhear the encounter. to your dismay, patrick zweig, smug as ever, sits outside the locker room.

đRandom Astrology Notesđ
Hiii! It's been so long since the last time I posted (I was so busy at uni) I hope everyone is doing fine! đ Here's my random astro notes/observation đ
đ Venus in Aquarius are likely attracted to someone who is intellectually stimulating, unconventional, and values independence. This placement desires a partner who embraces uniqueness, is open-minded, and engages in deep, thoughtful conversations. So someone who respects personal freedom and enjoys exploring new ideas will appeal to this placement.
đ Someone with Juno in Sagittarius seeks a lifelong/long-term partner who is adventurous, optimistic, and growth-oriented. Someone who shares a passion for travel, learning, and expanding horizons would be ideal. They value truth, honesty, freedom, and a relationship filled with excitement and exploration.
đ People with Water Rising + Earth Sun (especially Scorpio Risings) can leave a strong first impression. They will most likely come across as someone who is intense, ambitious, and confident with a hint of rebelliousness. Their aura feels like a combination of mystery, authority, charisma, and boldness.
đ Moon in Virgo is probably the perfectionist of the zodiac who can't relax until everything is labeled, organized, and sanitized. Your idea of emotional security? A perfectly curated to-do list and color-coded spreadsheets for feelings and activities. One of the best people to give constructive criticism (unless you're very sensitive, believe me their words can hurt even tho most of the time they don't mean to hurt you.) They see emotions are just puzzles waiting to be solved.
đ Leo Moon + Scorpio Rising = walking contradiction. Their duality is wild. Enigmatic, mysterious, private mask with the scorpio rising while the leo moon screams for applause, admiration and center of attention. it's like "Hey, notice me but don't make it obvious." "look but don't touch." such a power play.
đ Venus in Pisces is the hopeless romantic that probably see red flags as a beautiful shade of crimson and admire it. Stop saying you can fix someone, you can't! Please stop falling for potentials and trying to save individuals who doesn't even want to be saved. Forget the "Love is sacrifice", you're not their therapist, and martyrdom isn't sexy.
đ Venus in Leo folks love to make an entranceâtheyâre like DIVA of relationships. They expect their partners to shower them with attention, affection, and maybe a red carpet once in a while. If theyâre not getting enough adoration, they might just start singing âSingle Ladiesâ to themselves.
đ Moon in Aquarius person feels more at home in a group chat about physics than on a cozy night in with a romantic partner. Theyâre super into ideas, innovation, and making a differenceâbut don't ask them to express their feelings too much. You might get a "let's analyze this emotionally" instead of a hug. Might not work with someone who wants a lovey-dovey affectionate relationship.
đ Saturn in Taurus is the person who buys the most reliable, sturdy chair at the furniture store... and then waits 20 years to get a new one because "itâs perfectly fine." They have an unshakable commitment to stability and material comfort, but they might be a little too attached to their "favorite" blanketâdonât even think about touching it.
đ Venus Conjunct Mars in natal chart is like the romantic-comedy genre. The chemistry is palpable, and thereâs a lot of flirtation, passion, and energy flying around. Theyâre the kind of person who can turn a quick coffee date into a whirlwind romanceâand probably end up with matching tattoos by the end of the week.
đ Venus in Aquarius is the quirky, "Iâm not like other people" type of lover. Theyâre attracted to whatâs unique, eccentric, or revolutionary. Their idea of a perfect date might involve a debate about the future of technology or attending an avant-garde art exhibit. Forget the traditional romantic gesturesâtheyâd rather build a robot together.
đ Venus in Taurus is the ultimate âNetflix and chillâ personâliterally. If you know the tiktoker that lives the fancy life, eating steak, travelling and enjoying? That's a good definition of Taurus and their ideal life. They value comfort, stability, and all the luxuries of life, especially good food and soft blankets. Theyâll adore you with cuddles, gifts, and the finest chocolateâbecause who wouldnât want to spoil their lover with cozy indulgences? But if you try to rush them, you might find yourself in a battle of wills. They prefer slow, steady love thatâs built to last⊠with a side of gourmet snacks.
đ Venus in Cancer is a cuddly, emotional romantic đŠ who wants to build a cozy home with their partnerâand maybe a family of cats while theyâre at it. Theyâre deeply sentimental and love making their loved ones feel cared for with homemade meals and personalized gestures. If you can make them feel safe, youâll have their heart forever. Just donât mess with their emotional boundaries, because theyâre like a fortress when it comes to protecting their feelings.
đ Venus in Aries is like the spark that lights the fire of romance. They fall fast and love fiercely, but their attention span can be as short as a Snapchat story. The thrill of the chase is their thingâso, if you're playing hard to get, you're already ahead of the game. Once they're in a relationship, expect passionate moments, spontaneous adventures, and lots of energy.
đ Mars in Taurus is like the bulldozer of the zodiacâslow and steady, but extremely determined. They have an impressive amount of stamina and will stick with a task until itâs done right. Unlike the fiery Aries, Taurus likes to take their time and get things done with quality. Want them to rush? Good luck! Theyâll just give you the side-eye and continue on at their own pace. But if you need someone reliable whoâs not going to give up, this is your person.
đ Mars in Virgo is like a military general with a perfectly organized schedule. These folks are action-oriented, but theyâre not impulsiveâthey want to make sure that every detail is sorted before they go charging ahead. Theyâre fantastic at problem-solving, and they approach challenges with a calm, methodical attitude. Theyâre not about dramaâtheyâre about efficiency. But be warned: they might become slightly perfectionistic and a little too focused on the fine print, which could slow things down.

Art the Clown x Reader SMUT âą headcanons, how Art fucks, what he gets off to, etc
big content warning! contains some stuff that may gross you out; read at your own risk: menstruation kink, piss kink, oral sex, anal sex, object insertion, blood kink, various weapons mentioned, bondage, human hair and bones, butts and what comes out of butts, public sex, cockwarming, mostly dom!Art and sub!reader
đȘ Remember the work desk with all of Artâs weapons and tools on it? He knows you want him to fuck you, but heâs got shit to do (meaning weapons to build) so he lets you sit under the desk, cockwarming him while he works. Youâre on the ground between his knees, patiently holding him in your mouth. When he finishes constructing his latest instrument of torture/slaughter, Art pats his palm against his thigh, wordlessly telling you to climb up into his lap and ride him.đ©ž
đȘ Art enjoys blood and guts, so it goes without saying that during your period, heâs particularly eager to fuck you. He can detect the slight change in your scent, usually aware youâve begun to bleed even before you know. He plays with your pussy like itâs a new, special toy when youâre bleeding, spreading your lips and tracing his name on your inner thighs in red. Seeing/touching/tasting blood that comes from you is special to Art. Itâs the only time he gets to play in blood without it being the result of him hurting someone, so that makes the experience unique for him. He saves your used pads for âalone time,â using them later as a âsleeve,â to masturbate with.đ©ž
đȘ Art sometimes fucks you with unconventional objects, like the handle of one of his weapons (knife, axe) or the neck of a bottle. If youâve displeased him but he still wants to fuck you, he might deny you his cock and instead use something else, like the handle of one of his knives or the barrel of an (empty!) gun, to make you come instead of his cock, as a degrading âpunishment.âđ©ž
đȘ Art loves bondage. He knows what heâs doing when it comes to tying knots, as evidenced by the multiple victims youâve watched him restrain. He enjoys the power dynamic of being in absolute control of another person. When that crosses over into sex, you both get off on him tying you up and doing whatever the fuck he wants with your body.đ©ž
đȘ Artâs methods can border on sadistic at times (I mean how could they not??) but because he wants to keep you around to play with for the long haul, he never pushes you beyond the limits of safety, no matter how many new ways he comes up with to plug every hole in your body. If we know anything about Art, itâs that heâs perceptive. He studies the way your body responds to different forms of stimulation and mentally catalogs the information for later. All of his skill in crafting tools of torture means heâs able to create customized âtoys,â to fuck you with. But the thing is, theyâre never normal, or sweet; they always contain something fucked-up and sick. Art once surprised you with a whip heâd put together for you. Its strands were soft and felt so good gliding over your clit. You came so hard when Art whipped your pussy till it was puffy and leaking. It would have been a wonderful gift, if you hadnât realized later, upon closer inspection, that the strands now wet with your cum were in fact strands of human hair. And the custom dildo Art made for you, the one that was so smooth and colored beige/white? You later found out Art had chiseled and smoothed down a human bone to make it for you. The information almost made you sick on the spot. Art found your horrified reaction hilarious, of course, and it didnât stop him from laying you down and fucking you with it all the sameâŠđ©ž
đȘ ANAL ANAL ANAL ANAL ANAL ANAL âŠ
He loves to fuck you in the ass. Artâs a nasty little motherfucker when it comes to the stuff that comes out of butts, and Iâm not gonna elaborate here, but you can use your imagination to follow where Iâm going with thisâŠđ©ž
đȘ Art has zero inhibitions: he kills anyone, anywhere. Imagine that relating to sex; of course heâs going to fuck you wherever he wants, including places where you might get caught. Sex in public/risky spaces feels natural to Art, because he literally does not give a single fuck. Remember the first time you ever saw him? When you stumbled out the back door of that sleazy little bar in your home town, so drunk off your ass you thought you were leaving through the front? Art was in the alleyway behind the bar, black garbage bag hoisted over his shoulder, not even looking for anyone to fuck up but when he saw you, he knew heâd found a victim for the night. Heâd planned to stalk you home and do unspeakable things to you-but as you took the lead and approached him, there in the alleyway, he was caught off guard, his whole plan upended the moment you slid your arms around his waist, stood up on your tiptoes, and placed a soft, sloppy kiss on his cheek. He was awestruck, and even if he could speak, Art would still have been at a loss for words. You walked him backward a few steps, lining him up against a dumpster in the alleyway. You began fondling him through his costume, grinning when you realized his body had already begun to respond. One thing led to another, and within minutes, Art had you bent over that dumpster, with a fresh hole torn in the front of his costume where your bodies were joinedâŠđ©ž
đȘ No one would associate The Miles County Clown with tenderness, but if they knew Art, they would see a softer side of him only you do. Heâs still fucking deranged, donât get me wrong. But Art also has moments of vulnerability, when thereâs nothing he wants more than to hold you. Sitting in Artâs lap, he wraps his arms around you and stays still, so still, just enjoying the soft thump of your heartbeat against his, and the low hum of your breath on his chest. Your nearness calms the monster inside Art so well that sometimes, he forgets he is the monster itselfâŠđ©ž
đȘ Another benefit of having you in his lap? Art realized he could use his strength to make you stay in his lap no matter how badly you had to get up and take a piss, forcing you to wet yourself all over him. You felt him gradually getting hard under you as you began to wriggle on his lap. Art could see your discomfort, and when you told him you needed to get up and take a piss, he refused to release you. Youâd expect him to be smiling at you at a time like this, silently mocking you; but the look in his eyes was deathly serious, pitch black and full of a demented lust that would have had you locked you in place even if his arms hadnât. Blushing into his shoulder, you accepted the fact that Art wasnât letting go of you any time soon, and that he really was into this. He wanted this to happen. You allowed your bladder to empty, a soft trickle saturating your panties, followed by a steady stream of hot piss that spread over Artâs lap. His clothes were soaked through below the waist, your piss running down between his thighs and dampening the couch cushion beneath you. Art was rock hard by this point, his wet cock throbbing against your pussy. He lifted you off his lap just enough to reach between your bodies and position his tip against your entrance, then used your piss as a lube to slide inside youâŠđ©ž

⊠WHEN YOU MATCH RIIZEâS FREAK â PT.01
001. PAIRING , riize ! maknae line Ă afab reader 002. GENRE , scenario, drabble work . . . NOTE FROM SENA , just a filler work since I don't want to stay inactive :( will post the hyung line version someday lol đ€ MASTERLIST!!
HONG SEUNGHAN . . . âŠ
The cashierâs question hung in the air, dripping with innocence. âIs this for your baby?â
You glanced at your boyfriend, Seunghan, whose lips were twitching as he fought back a laugh. The overflowing basket in front of you didnât helpâchocolate bars, plush toys, and Lego sets practically screamed wholesome parent vibes. Seunghan gave an exaggerated nod, his expression far too serious for the situation. âOf course,â he said, his voice betraying the slightest quiver of amusement. Your jaw dropped. âYouâre not helping!â you hissed, but he only grinned, entirely unbothered.
The truth? There was no baby. The weekend haul wasnât for any hypothetical child but for two grown adultsâspecifically, you and Seunghanâwho spent lazy afternoons building Lego houses and hoarding plush toys like the overgrown kids you secretly were.
At home, the living room looked like a toddlerâs dreamland. Lego pieces were scattered across the carpet in chaotic piles. Seunghan was sprawled on his stomach, his brows furrowed in intense concentration as he assembled a construction truck. You sat cross-legged nearby, your fingers carefully snapping together brightly colored bricks. âLook at this!â you exclaimed, holding up a newly completed Lego house. Its tiny windows and mismatched roof were pure perfectionâor so you thought. Clapping in excitement, you beamed. âThis oneâs gold!â
Seunghan rolled his eyes, shooting you a half-hearted glance before returning to his truck. âGold? More like beginner level,â he teased, smirking as he expertly clicked two more pieces into place. âRude,â you pouted, nudging him with your foot. âIf someone saw us like this, theyâd probably think weâre insane. Adults playing with kidsâ toys?â He didnât even look up, his focus unshaken. âLet them think whatever they want,â he replied smoothly. Then he added, without missing a beat, âBut weâre together, right? Thatâs what matters. Who cares if weâre a little weird?â
You paused, his words sinking in. A warm smile spread across your face as you set down the Lego house. He was rightâbeing âfreakyâ or unconventional didnât matter when it was with him.
LEE SOHEE . . . âŠ
Living together had turned into a whirlwind of unpacking, decorating, and adjusting for you and Sohee. Between all the chaos, there was one thing youâd managed to avoidâshaving. It wasnât intentional at first, but the moment razor bumps made their unwelcome appearance the last time you tried, you vowed to steer clear. The solution? Long pants and full-sleeved pajamas, even in the heat of summer.
It workedâuntil it didnât.
One evening, as you lounged at home, Soheeâs sharp eyes finally caught on. His gaze lingered on your covered legs, his expression unreadable. âYouâve been avoiding something,â he stated matter-of-factly. Caught off guard, you hesitated. âWhat do you mean?â he didnât answer right away, just leaned forward and tugged lightly at the hem of your pants. âWhy are you hiding your legs?â
Flustered, you looked away, mumbling, âI messed up last time I shaved, okay? Razor bumps are no joke.â
His brows raised slightly, and thenâto your surpriseâhe chuckled. Not the mocking kind of laugh, but one filled with warmth. âWhy didnât you just say so?â
Before you could respond, he disappeared into the bathroom and returned with your razor, a small towel, and shaving cream. âSit,â he instructed, pointing to the couch. âWhat? Why?â âIâm doing it for you,â he said simply, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Reluctantly, you pulled on a pair of shorts and sat down, watching him with a mixture of disbelief and curiosity. He knelt in front of you, focused as he lathered the cream onto your leg.
âYou have to shave in the direction of hair growth,â he explained, his tone almost professional as he carefully ran the razor along your skin. âThat way, you avoid razor bumps.â You couldnât help but laugh softly. âYou sound like a tutorial video.â He smirked without looking up. âAnd youâre a terrible student if you didnât know this already.â
His touch was gentle but precise, his attention entirely on the task. The awkwardness you feared never came. Instead, there was comfortâa kind of intimacy you hadnât expected. When he finished, he leaned back, inspecting his work. âThere. Smooth as silk. Now you can stop hiding from me.â you blinked down at your leg, then back at him. âYouâre not even a little grossed out?â
He scoffed, standing up. âWhy would I be? Youâre mine, freaky shaving habits and all.â
You grinned, your chest warm. If this wasnât love, you didnât know what was.
LEE ANTON . . . âŠ
The room was quiet except for the faint sound of a movie playing on your phone screen. You pointed at the screen, where two actors were locked in a dramatic kiss, a cube of chocolate passed between their mouths. âHmm, you think thatâs dirty?â you asked, a playful smirk tugging at your lips as you glanced at him. He didnât answer right away, his eyes lingering on the screen before shifting to meet yours. âDonât know unless I try,â he said. His voice wasnât teasing, thoughâit held a certain seriousness that sent a shiver down your spine.
Before you could retort, he grabbed a cube of chocolate from the table and slipped it into his mouth. You blinked, taken aback, but before you could fully process his intentions, he leaned in. His lips met yours, soft and warm, tasting faintly of the rich chocolate he was intent on sharing. The sweetness melted further between your mouths as his tongue pushed the piece into yours, teasing and deliberate. The sensation of the chocolate melting, mixing with the heat of the kiss, was intoxicating. Your hands instinctively flew to his shoulders, gripping him tightly as the moment deepened, every sense heightened.
The chocolate dissolved into a mix of flavors and warmth, making the kiss feel lighter yet more overwhelming. The world outside disappeared as you leaned further into him, his firm grip on your waist grounding you in the dizzying moment.
When the kiss finally broke, you both gasped for air, your foreheads resting against each otherâs. Antonâs lips were smeared with chocolate, as were yours, but neither of you made a move to clean it. Instead, he leaned back slightly, a crooked, chocolatey grin spreading across his face. âItâs not dirty,â he declared with the utmost confidence, his voice low and steady, as if his conclusion were a scientific fact.
You stared at him, half-stunned and half-impressed, your lips tingling from the kiss. âYouâre unbelievable,â you muttered, a laugh bubbling up from your chest. He grabbed the remote and paused the video, turning to you with a playful glint in his eye. âUnbelievably good, you mean.â That was the moment you realized something undeniable: your boyfriend didnât just match your freakâhe might actually surpass it.

So I got this tag on my answer to an ask about when it became acceptable for western women to wear pants, and you know it's all I need to go on a tangent.
I think the short answer here would be men have worn skirts as long as people have worn anything, so pretty long tbh. But since I am incapable of answering anything shortly, I think we can re-frame this question:
When did skirts stop being socially acceptable for men?
So let's start with acknowledging that tunics, togas, kirtles and such men wore through history were, in fact, skirts. I think there's often a tendency to think of these as very different garments from those that women wore, but really they are not. Most of the time they were literally referred to with the same name. (I will do a very broad and simplified overview of men's clothing from ancient times to Early Middle Ages so we can get to the point which is Late Middle Ages.)
Ancient Greek men and women both wore chitons. Even it's length wasn't determined by gender, but by occupation. Athletes, soldiers and slaves wore knee-length chitons for easier movement. Roman men and women wore very similar garment, tunics. Especially in earlier ancient Rome long sleeves were associated with women, but later became more popular and unconventional for men too. Length though was still dependent on occupation and class, not gender. Toga was sure men's clothing, but worn over tunic. It was wrapped around the waist, like a dress would, and then hung over shoulder. Romans did wear leggings when they needed to. For example for leg protection when hunting as in this mosaic from 4th century. They would have been mostly used by men since men would be doing the kinds of activities that would require them. But that does not lessen the dressyness of the tunics worn here. If a woman today wears leggings under her skirt, the skirt doesn't suddenly become not a skirt.
All over Europe thorough the early Middle Ages, the clothes were very similar in their basic shape and construction as in Rome and Greece. In Central and Northern Europe though people would wear pants under shorter tunics. There were exceptions to the everyone wearing a tunic trend. Celtic men wore braccae, which were pants, and short tunics and literally just shirts. Celts are the rare case, where I think we can say that men didn't wear dresses. Most other peoples in these colder areas wore at least knee-length tunics. Shorter tunics and trousers were worn again mostly by soldiers and slaves, so rarely any other woman than slave women. The trousers were though definitely trousers in Early Middle Ages. They were usually loose for easier construction and therefore not that similar to Roman leggings. However leggings style fitted pants were still used, especially by nobility. I'd say the loose trousers are a gray area. They wore both dresses and pants, but still definitely dresses. I'd say this style was very comparable to the 2000s miniskirts over jeans style. First one below is a reconstruction of Old Norse clothing by Danish history museum. The second is some celebrity from 2005. I see no difference.
When we get to the high Middle Ages tunics are still used by both men and women, and still it's length is dependent on class and activity more than gender, but there's some new developments too. Pants and skirt combo is fully out and leggings' are back in in form of hose. Hose were not in fact pants and calling them leggings is also misleading. Really they are socks. Or at least that's how they started. As it has become a trend here they were used by everyone, not just men. During early Middle Ages they were worn often with the trousers, sometimes the trousers tucked inside them making them baggy. In high Middle Ages they became very long when used with shorter tunics, fully displacing the need for trousers. They would be tied to the waist to keep them up, as they were not knitted (knitting was being invented in Egypt around this time, and some knitting was introduced to Europe during middle Ages, but it really only took off much later during Renaissance Era) and therefore not stretchy. First picture is an example of that from 1440s. Another exciting development in the High Medieval era was bliaut in France and it's sphere of influence. Bliaut was an early attempt in Europe of a fitted dress. And again used by both men and women. The second illustration below from mid 12th century shows a noble man wearing a bliaut and nicely showing off his leg covered in fitted hose. Bliaut was usually likely fitted with lacing on the sides, but it wasn't tailored (tailoring wasn't really a thing just yet) and so created a wrinkled effect around the torso.
In the 14th century things really picked up in European fashion. European kingdoms finally started to become richer and the rich started to have some extra money to put into clothing, so new trends started to pop up rapidly. Tailoring became a thing and clothes could be now cut to be very fitted, which gave birth to fitted kirtle. At the same time having extra money meant being able to spend extra money on more fabric and to create very voluminous clothing, which gave birth to the houppelande.
Kirtle was once again worn by everyone. It wasn't an undergarment, for women that would be shift and men shirt and breeches, but it was an underlayer. It could be worn in public but often had at least another layer on top of it. The bodice part, including sleeves were very fitted with lacing or buttons (though there were over-layer kirtles that had different sleeves that changed with fashions and would be usually worn over a fitted kirtle). Men's kirtles were short, earlier in 14th century knee-length but towards the end of the century even shorter styles became fashionable in some areas. First picture below shows a man with knee-length kirtle from 1450s Italy.
Houppelande was also unisex. It was a loose full-length overgown with a lot of fabric that was gathered on the neckline and could be worn belted or unbelted. The sleeves were also wide and became increasingly wider (for men and women) later in the century and into the next century. Shorter gowns similar in style and construction to the houppelande were also fashionable for men. Both of these styles are seen in the second picture below from late 14th century.
In the very end of 14th century, first signs of pantification of men can be seen. In France and it's sphere of influence the skirt part of the kirtle became so short it barely covered the breeches as seen below on these fashionable musicians from 1395-1400 France. Long houppelandes, length ranging from floor to calf, were still used by men though (the second picture, 1414 France), as were knee and thigh length gowns of similar loose style.
The hems continued to be short through the 15th century in France, but in other places like Italy and German sphere of influence, they were still fairly long, at least to mid thigh, through the first half of the century. In France at some point in late 13th century the very short under-kirtle started to be called doublet and they are just getting shorter in 1400s. The showing underwear problem was fixed by joined hose and the codpiece, signaling the entrance of The Sluttiest Era of men's fashion. Below is an example from 1450s Belgium of doublet and early codpiece in display. As you can see from the other figures, the overgowns of the previous century were also getting very, very short. In the next French example below from 1470s we can see the skirt shrink out of existence right before our eyes.
The very skimpy doublet and it's accompanying codpiece spread to the rest of the Europe in the second half of 15th century and it would only get sluttier from there. The Italians were just showing their full ass (example from 1490s). The dress was not gone yet though. The doublet and codpiece continued to be fashionable, but the overdress got longer again in the French area too. For example in the second example there's Italian soldiers in a knee length dresses from 1513.
But we have to talk about the Germans. They went absolutely mad with the whole doublet and codpiece. Just look at this 1513 painting below (first one). But they did not only do it sluttier than everyone else, they also changed the course of men's fashion.
Let's take a detour talking about the Landsknecht, the mercenary pikeman army of the Holy Roman Empire. (I'm not that knowledgeable in war history so take my war history explanation with a grain of salt.) Pikemen had recently become a formidable counter-unit against cavalry, which earlier in the Medieval Era had been the most important units. Knights were the professional highly trained cavalry, which the whole feudal system leaned against. On the other hand land units were usually not made of professional soldiers. Landsknecht were formed in late 15th century as a professional army of pikemen. They were skilled and highly organized, and quickly became a decisive force in European wars. Their military significance gave them a lot of power in the Holy Roman Empire, some were even given knighthood, which previously wasn't possible for land units, and interestingly for us they were exempt from sumptuary laws. Sumptuary laws controlled who could wear what. As the bourgeois became richer in Europe in late Middle Ages and Renaissance Era, laws were enacted to limit certain fabrics, colors and styles from those outside nobility, to uphold the hierarchy between rich bourgeois and the nobles. The Landsknecht, who were well payed mercenaries (they would mutiny, if they didn't get payed enough), went immediately absolute mad with the power to bypass sumptuary laws. Crimes against fashion (affectionate) were committed. What do you do, when you have extra money and one of your privileges is to wear every color and fabric? You wear every color and fabric. At the same time. You wear them on top of each other and so they can be seen at the same time, you slash the outer layer. In the second image you can feast your eyes on the Landsknecht.
Just to give you a little more of that good stuff, here's a selection of some of my favorite Landsknecht illustrations. This is the peak male performance. Look at those codpieces. Look at those bare legs. The tiny shorts. And savor them.
The Landsknecht were the hot shit. Their lavish and over the top influence quickly took over men's fashion in Germany in early 1500s. Slashing, the technique possibly started by them, but at least popularized by them, instantly spread all over Europe. That's how you get the typical Renaissance poof sleeves. They at first slashed the thighs of their hose, but it seems like to fit more of everything into their outfits, they started wearing the hose in two parts, upper hose and nether hose, which was a sort of return to the early Medieval trousers and knee-high hose style. The two part hose was adopted by the wider German men's fashion early in the century, but already in 1520s had spread to rest of Europe. It was first combined with the knee-length overdress that had made it's comeback in the turn of the century, like in this Italian painting from 1526 (first image). At this point knitting had become established and wide-spread craft in Europe and the stockings were born, replacing nether hose. They were basically nether hose, but from knitted fabric. The gown shortened again and turned into more of a jacket as the trunk hose became increasingly the centerpiece of the outfit, until in 1560s doublet - trunk hose combination emerged as the standard outerwear (as seen in the second example, 1569 Netherlands) putting the last nail on the coffin of the men's dress as well as the Sluttiest Era. The hose and doublet became profoundly un-slutty and un-horny, especially when the solemn Spanish influence spread all over with it's dark and muted colors.
Especially in Middle Ages, but thorough European history, trousers have been associated with soldiers. The largely accepted theory is that trousers were invented for horse riding, but in climates with cold winters, where short skirts are too cold, and long skirts are still a hazard when moving around, trousers (with or without a short skirt) are convenient for all kinds of other movement requiring activities like war. So by adopting hose as general men's clothing, men in 1500s associated masculinity with militarism. It was not a coincidence that the style came from Landsknecht. I may have been joking about them being "peak male performance", but really they were the new masculine ideals for the new age. At the time capitalism was taking form and European great powers had begun the process of violently conquering the world for money, so it's not surprising that the men, who fought for money and became rich and powerful doing so, were idealised.
Because of capitalism and increasingly centralized power, the feudal system was crumbling and with it the feudal social hierarchy. Capitalism shifted the wealth from land ownership (which feudal nobility was built upon) to capital and trade, deteriorating the hierarchy based on land. At the same time Reformation and centralized secular powers were weakening the power of the Church, wavering also the hierarchy justified by godly ordain. The ruling class was not about to give up their power, so a new social hierarchy needed to form. Through colonialism the concept of race was created and the new hierarchy was drawn from racial, gender and wealth lines. It was a long process, but it started in 1500s, and the increasing distinction between men's and women's fashions was part of drawing those lines. At the same time distinctions between white men and racialized men, as well as white women and racialized women were drawn. As in Europe up until this point, all over the world (with some exceptions) skirts were used by everyone. So when European men fully adopted the trousers, and trousers, as well as their association to military, were equated with masculinity, part of it was to emasculate racialized men, to draw distinctions.
Surprise, it was colonialism all along! Honestly if there's a societal or cultural change after Middle Ages, a good guess for the reason behind it is always colonialism. It won't be right every time, but quite a lot of times. Trousers as a concept is of course not related to colonialism, but the idea that trousers equal masculinity and especially the idea that skirts equal femininity are. So I guess decolonize masculinity by wearing skirts?

Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x Fem!Reader
Trigger Warnings: Chronic illness, reader with past abusive relationship, canon-typical violence, canon-typical themes, language, future sexual themes
Rating: Mature for mature themes and future chapters.
Word Count: 1k
Summary: Y/N, the newest and youngest profiler in the BAU, is haunted by her pastâan abusive relationship and an illness she keeps hidden from her team. Though skilled in her work, she distances herself emotionally, fearing vulnerability. Aaron Hotchner, her reserved and perceptive boss, begins to notice the cracks in her carefully constructed walls as they navigate high-stakes cases together. Drawn to her resilience, Hotch finds himself increasingly protective of Y/N. As their bond deepens, both must confront their own emotional barriers, leading to an unexpected connection amidst the darkness of their work.
AN: I originally posted this story back in 2021, but for a multitude of reasons, I stepped away from the fandom and removed it. Now, in 2024, Iâve decided to return and revisit this fic with a fresh perspective. Iâm currently in the process of rewriting the entire 45-chapter story, adding new depth, and refining the plot. As I re-upload the chapters, I will be including trigger warnings (TWs) for sensitive content. However, if I miss something, please donât hesitate to let me know. Your comments, shares, and likes/kudos are incredibly encouraging and motivate me to keep working on this rewrite, as well as inspire new content. Thank you for being here, and I hope you enjoy the updated version of this story!â Ki
Masterlist | I Promise You This | Ao3
You stare out the jetâs window, your eyes tracing the clouds below. Sleep eludes you, and the quiet conversation among your team members fades into the background. Music hums softly in your ears, a barely audible escape. You know the oddsâthree missing childrenâand yet your mind feels curiously empty.
Laughter breaks through your thoughts. You glance over and see Morgan teasing Reid, as usual. The whole team joins in, and even Hotch chuckles. If heâs laughing, whatever Reid said must have been good.
You smile faintly, though it doesnât reach your eyes. Isolation is familiar to youâwhether you're buried in a book or lost in your music, youâve always found comfort in keeping a certain distance. Itâs not about not fitting in, at least not entirely. The team welcomed you when you joined. They accepted you. But youâve never quite let yourself feel like you belong.
Only in your twenties, youâve already lived more life than most people twice your age. A childhood overshadowed by responsibilities that shouldnât have been yours, and a turbulent adolescence marked by health problems that kept you in and out of hospitals. You were the kid who missed weeks of school but somehow still pulled straight Aâs. The one who didnât go to prom, didnât have a high school sweetheart, and definitely didnât have a tight-knit group of friends.
Then there was him. The boy who promised you the world but only gave you heartache. The one who made you feel small, unworthy, brokenâboth with his words and his hands. The one who convinced you to stay, even when every fiber of your being screamed to leave. You did leave, eventually, but not without scars, some of which never quite healed.
No one on the team knows any of this. To them, youâre just Y/N, the youngest, least experienced profiler in the BAU. A fast learner, sure. Someone who pulls her weight in the field. But youâve made sure your past is buried deep, nowhere near your file. Only Spencer ever asked why your academic timeline was a little... unconventional. You gave him the same story youâve told everyone else: You took time to travel.
The truth? You finished undergrad earlier than most, and jumped into grad school while working at a local field office. It was around that time the BAU reached out, and suddenly, your life was moving at a pace you could barely keep up with. Your health remained an ongoing battle, but that was nobodyâs business. Youâve never let it slow you down, and youâre not about to start now.
Therapy helped. It gave you the tools to face your past and, more importantly, to reclaim your future. Joining the BAU felt like a step in the right directionâa chance to put your trauma to use, to give your pain purpose. And if you keep your distance from the team, itâs not because you donât trust them. Itâs because trusting people still feels like a risk.
The jet dips, signaling the approach to Phoenix. Your body tenses involuntarily. You havenât been back here in years, not since... him. Youâre not sure how youâll react once your feet touch the ground again.
"What are you listening to?" Hotchâs voice pulls you from your thoughts.
You jump, startled by his sudden appearance across from you. He watches you with that quiet intensity, and for a moment, you wonder how long heâs been sitting there.
"Nothing important," you murmur, pausing the music and slipping your headphones out.
Hotchâs gaze lingers, and you shift uncomfortably. Itâs not that heâs unkindâfar from it. But thereâs something about his presence, his authority, that makes you second-guess yourself.
"You seemed deep in thought," he notes, a rare hint of amusement in his voice.
"Just zoning out," you reply with a shrug. "Long flight."
He nods but doesnât push. Hotch is observant, more so than the others. Heâs noticed the way you isolate yourself on these flights, how you always seem a little more on edge than you let on. But he hasnât asked, not yet. Youâre grateful for that.
"What were you all laughing about earlier?" you ask, more to fill the silence than out of genuine curiosity.
"Reidâs latest hairstyle," Hotch replies with a smirk. "Morganâs convinced heâs trying out for a boy band."
You laugh softly, surprising yourself. "He does have that early 2000s look going for him."
"Maybe next week heâll try the âclassic detectiveâ look," Hotch says, the corner of his mouth twitching in amusement.
For a moment, the tension eases. You almost forget where youâre headed.
"Have you gone over the case file?" Hotch asks, his tone shifting back to business.
"Yeah," you nod, glancing back out the window. The familiar skyline of Phoenix looms closer. You take a deep breath. "I havenât been here in a long time."
"Family here?" he asks casually, clearly not realizing the weight of the question.
You shake your head quickly. "No, I just... used to live nearby for a while."
Itâs technically the truth. But the memories attached to this city are ones youâd rather not revisit.
Before Hotch can respond, Morgan sticks his neck out from across the aisle. "You lived in Phoenix? How did I not know that?"
"It was a long time ago," you say, deflecting with a practiced ease.
Morgan grins and steers the conversation back to the case, but Hotch lingers for a moment longer, watching you. Thereâs something about you that doesnât quite add up, something just out of reach. Heâs known you for a year, yet youâre still a puzzle he hasnât managed to solve. And maybe thatâs why he keeps trying.
As the jet touches down, you pull your bag over your shoulder and follow the team out, doing your best to leave the past behind. But Hotchâs eyes stay on you, and for the first time in a long time, you wonder if someone might be able to see through your walls after all.

During the 1960s numerous subsaharan African countries gained independence from their colonial rule, a process that put an end to a grim period of history during which European rulers conquered and subjugated African peoples and tribes. But the African independence movement not only shook off the shackles of foreign rule but also initiated a boom in modern architecture that has gone largely unnoticed outside of Africa: as a sign of modernization and ambition conference centers, administrative buildings, universities, high rises and luxury hotels were erected, predominantly as concrete constructions and under the aegis of European architects. The employment of the latter obviously came at the expense of local building traditions and techniques but at least local climate conditions were accounted for, a concession that resulted in expressive details and unusual forms.
Over time these buildings have nonetheless fallen into disrepair and often lost their initial purpose. Against this background and in view of their obscurity beyond Africa the architect Manuel Herz at the ETH Zurich initiated a research project focused on Ghana, Senegal, Cote dâIvoire, Kenya and Zambia. The result is the monumental compendium âAfrican Modernism: The Architecture of Independenceâ, originally published in 2015 by Park Books and presented here in its second edition from 2022. On 640 pages the volume documents a stunning selection of buildings, cities and architects that are expertly captured by photographers Iwan Baan and Alexia Webster. In an unconventional move they go beyond the purely architectural documentation and also take into account the everyday life and hence demonstrate the lively goings-on in and around the buildings.
In light of these qualities the present volume is a highly recommended opportunity to get familiar with African post-independence architecture and hopefully only the starting point for increased interest and research into the architecture of the continent.
