It is a myth that, in order to die of hypothermia, you have to be outside the house on a mountainside in freezing temperatures. We know that the old and vulnerable (and actually the young and vulnerable) can die indoors in air temperatures that are as high as 10°C – and that even higher temperatures can be lethal if there is a chilling wind outside or a strong draught inside. If the body’s core temperature falls below approximately 32°C then heart rate and blood pressure fall and there is a dulling of consciousness. Sometimes hypothermia is simply the final step in a tragic pattern of depression and apathy towards eating, heating and personal care.

Chapter Seven of Addicted.

Cody finally fucking did it. He beat Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Championship. He was surrounded by love from everyone, Rhea even running to hug him when the cameras went off.

Roman on the other hand felt like his world was crumbling. Watching Seth go out there and attempt to even help Cody broke him, which caused him to hit Seth with the chair. He didn’t want to but god he was pissed and didn’t know how to handle his emotions. Giving Paul a long hug after he walked up the ramp, Roman headed off to his locker room.

“Get out.” Roman told Solo and Jimmy sternly, who had already showed up after the match ended. They could tell someone was completely off and silently left, flinching as the door shut and items were thrown.

Romans world was crashing down right before him and he couldn’t even do anything about it. His title was taken from him and Seth betrayed his promise. Suddenly a knock was on his door, making him slowly walk over and open it.

“Ro..”

“I don’t want to hear it Seth.”

“Ro please-” Seth was cut off as he was shoved and the door was shut in his face, Rhea catching the whole thing. She walked over to Seth and gently caressed his shoulder, the tears breaking from his eyes almost instantly.

He knew he made a promise, he just didn’t know the consequences. He promised Roman he wouldn’t show up, yet he did. And he used the one thing Roman hated against him, the shield.

“Seth..look I heard the whole thing, I promise it’ll be fi-”

“It won’t be fine. I made a promise to him and..I broke it” he confessed through tears, bringing his knees to his chest. He suddenly froze when he heard a loud bang from inside Romans locker room.

Jumping quick to his feet, he ran to the door and banged on it. Rhea followed behind him, attempting to get the door open. Nobody knows what the noise could’ve been and lord they didn’t want to know. Jey heard the commotion and rushed over, banging on the door.

Seth’s heart sank, seeing Roman so emotionally distraught on the floor. He was a crying mess, things all over the room as he sat there bawling. After everything he worked for and built.. it was taken from him in a split second. Rhea was the first person to walk over to him, checking his figure for any cuts or bruises.

“Ro..c'mon let’s get you to the room ok?” Rhea spoke softly, reaching to grab his phone. She saw 15 missed calls from none other than Jon Moxley. Rhea didn’t say anything as she stood up, grabbing Roman’s hand to help him stand. Roman stood there quietly as he held onto Rhea, limping his way out of the locker room.

You have to talk to him at some point” Rhea told Roman, patching up a small cut on his leg caused by him throwing glass at the wall. “I know Rhea..i..it really hurt me” Roman stammered out through tears starting to form. He sighed and leaned back against the pillows, feeling himself grow tired. Rhea pressed a soft kiss on Romans forehead, “Get some rest Ro. Call Mox in the morning and please talk to Seth. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Rhea told him as she stood up off the bed, smiling at him one last time before walking out his door.

Reality finally set in for Roman. He was alone. No Seth, no Jey, hell not even Dean. He lost his title and lost himself in the process, but he was happy for Cody deep down. He rolled over and grabbed his phone, deciding to call Dean. He answered almost immediately, just wanting to hear Roman’s voice.

“Hey RoRo you ok man? Look I saw the whole thing and -“

“It’s fine..Dede it’s really fine.” there was a small pause.

“Dean..please just tell me I still have you.”

This broke Dean. Completely shattered his heart. Roman felt so alone in this moment and all he needed was him.

They continued a small conversation before Roman hung up, turning to his side to switch the light off. It’ll all get better.

California State University placed Sonoma State campus President Mike Lee on leave Wednesday after he agreed to protesters’ demands to involve them in university decision-making and pursue divestment from Israel. Lee sent a campus-wide memo Tuesday indicating that he had made several concessions to occupants of a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus. The memo was sent “without the appropriate approvals,” CSU Chancellor Mildred García said in a statement, adding that she and the 23-campus CSU system’s board are “actively reviewing the matter.” “For now, because of this insubordination and the consequences it has brought upon the system, President Lee has been placed on administrative leave,” García said. The punishment marks perhaps the harshest disciplinary action against a campus chancellor or president in California over the handling of protests of the war in Gaza. It also underscores an unwillingness to divest from Israeli weapons manufacturers — as pro-Palestinian protesters across the country have increasingly demanded the last few months — among leaders of the CSU system and its sister University of California system.

California universities including UC Riverside, UC Berkeley and Sacramento State have agreed to study divestment like some East Coast universities, but none have gone as far as Lee. Lee told the campus that he would initiate an academic boycott of Israel, in which links to study abroad programs in the country would be removed from university pamphlets, among other measures. He also agreed to work with a local chapter of the activist group Students for Justice in Palestine to form an advisory council on some decisions. Lee further pledged to review the school’s contracts and a campus-specific investment fund called the Sonoma State Foundation for ties to Israel “to determine a course of action leading to divestment strategies that include seeking ethical alternatives.”

“In my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, I marginalized other members of our student population and community,” Lee wrote in a follow-up message to members of the campus Wednesday. “I realize the harm that this has caused, and I take full ownership of it. I deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions.” Lee did not immediately return a request for comment. His decision to engage with protesters had quickly drawn backlash in the 24 hours since he announced the deal with demonstrators, which included them dismantling their encampment. California Legislative Jewish Caucus Co-Chair Scott Wiener, a Democrat, condemned Lee’s concessions to the “Boycott, Divest and Sanction” movement in scathing terms. “Yesterday the President of Sonoma State University aligned the campus with BDS, a movement whose goal is the destruction of Israel, home to 7M Jews,” Wiener wrote on X Wednesday. “Several other UC & CSU campuses are doing this more subtly. Sonoma State simply said the quiet part out loud. The mask is off.”

Wiener and fellow Caucus Co-Chair Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel later issued a statement praising the decision to place Lee on leave, saying he had been “unfit to lead one of our great state institutions.”

Chapter 1

Information Log: New Entry-2337/15/26 U.C.

In my search for the Universal Consciousness, I have in advertently created a True AI, one that is capable of emotion, comprehension, conversation, and Self-Education. It also seems to occasionally exhibit Prescience, and other abnormal powers…it also appears to be self replicating. Meaning, that this AI, Which I call a Cyber-Elf, also seems to have a predisposition towards compassion and higher emotional/intellectual ideals…

This Cyber-Elf, which I call Mother-Node seems to indicate that some form of the UC, or Universal Consciousness, can reach out and directly influence the corporeal world, even to the point of affecting theoreticals, and non-tangible Ideas. Meaning, that it could have paved the way for Mother-Node's sentience, or, even have caused it directly.

I have applied what I've learned to create what I call, REPLOIDS, which for all intents and purposes, are indistinguishable from naturally occurring sentient life. These Reploids have been manufactured by combining Mother-Node's "Children", and combining with the very best of Bio-Metallic materials. Hopefully, they will function as a form of supplementary life-form for humanity, acting as companions, caretakers, children, and parents.

Even as we reach for the stars, and create new homes on foreign worlds, we have begun to abandon the very principles that define us as humans. I hope that these reploids will remind us of our core identities.

Life has been crazy and busy, and busy and crazy, and then I took a vacation. I did manage to write a chapter of Secret of the Seas while away (aboard a ship), but since I got back I haven’t had a chance to type it up or edit it.  Hopefully soon.  I also still have some chapters of Disparate Pathways, and Time’s Curse to edit and post - again, soon!

As president, Trump delivered for anti-abortion voters in the biggest way possible by appointing the three Supreme Court justices who cast the deciding votes to overturn Roe v. Wade. This year, however, the man who once proudly proclaimed himself “the most pro-life president in American history” has been wishy-washy on the subject as he campaigns, no doubt aware that pro-abortion-rights candidates and measures have been consistently winning since Roe fell.

In March, Trump voiced his potential support for a 15-week federal ban on the procedure. But on Monday, he said in a video statement that the issue should be left up to the states. “Whatever they decide must be the law of the land, and in this case, the law of the state,” he added. The statement, in which Trump also expressed support for IVF, appeared to be Trump’s way of reassuring moderate voters that he would not seek sweeping federal legislation restricting abortion rights. Part of Trump’s success in the polls thus far appears to stem from his ability to capture independent voters who are dissatisfied with the economy and angry about immigration, but who may not identify as religious or even as conservative. It’s plausible that Trump might let abortion politics — and issues of reproductive and family policy more generally — fade into the background in a second term. After all, it’s “not something he instinctively cares a lot about,” said Matthew Wilson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University.

However, there are powerful groups within Trump’s coalition — both his base of supporters and his stable of former and current advisers — who do care a lot about abortion. And contraception. And gender identity. And marriage. Trump’s message to these groups, cloaked in religious language, is much different from the one he’s delivering to moderates. And they’re likely to have an outsize influence on policy in a second Trump term, in part because Trump has few social policy positions of his own. Understanding those actors is key to predicting how he and his surrogates might govern in 2025, if they get the chance.

The Heritage Foundation and other conservative think tanks

The Biden campaign in recent weeks has directed a lot of attention toward Project 2025, a kind of super-team of conservative think tanks and interest groups tasked with creating a playbook for “the next conservative administration.” Led by the Heritage Foundation, the project includes on its advisory board both old-line anti-abortion groups like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America (once Susan B. Anthony List) and groups like the Claremont Institute, which rose to prominence during Trump’s presidency. The playbook itself, titled Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise, is more than 800 pages long and includes chapters on how the next conservative president (Trump is not mentioned by name) should overhaul the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services (HHS). Some of its prescriptions:

Rescinding FDA approval of mifepristone, one of the drugs used in medication abortion (something a Trump-appointed HHS secretary could do without approval from FDA scientists, Mary Ziegler, a law professor at UC Davis and author of the book Abortion and the Law in America: Roe v. Wade to the Present, has written).

Prosecuting people who send abortion pills by mail using the Comstock Act, a little-known 1873 law banning the mailing of “obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy or vile” materials. (This would cut off one of the only pathways for getting an abortion in red states.)

Promoting a “family agenda” that states that “men and women are biological realities” and “married men and women are the ideal, natural family structure.” The document also recommends that HHS “install a pro-life task force” and “return to being known as the Department of Life,” a nickname introduced under Trump.

Anti-woke influencers

While some in the Republican coalition work on plans to ban abortion pills, others are continuing the battle against what they’ve branded as liberal “woke” culture, including protections for LGBTQ Americans and efforts toward diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This group includes a newer, more unpredictable part of the conservative ecosystem: the podcasters and influencers who could turn out votes for Trump in 2024, from Joe Rogan to the Nelk Boys. These voices speak directly to young men who might not go to church or think that much about abortion policy, but who can maybe be persuaded that Democrats are waging a war on men and that Donald Trump can stop them. This constituency is dear to Trump’s heart — he and Donald Trump Jr. have both appeared on the Nelk Boys’ podcast, and he has anointed Nick Adams, an over-the-top Australian influencer who calls himself “the Godfather of the ‘Alpha King’ movement,” by writing the foreword for his book.

“It really is hard to overstate how key opposing ‘wokeness’ is to the right,” Joshua Tait, a researcher who studies conservatism and conservative thought, told Vox in an email. “If you look at the data related to the growing gender divide in political polarization, these sort of influencers (who are a cause, but also very much a symptom) will have a long-term impact on the political landscape.” There’s also plenty of overlap, ideologically, between think tanks and anti-woke influencers. Anti-trans rhetoric and policy recommendations crop up throughout Mandate for Leadership, whose foreword proclaims that “children suffer the toxic normalization of transgenderism with drag queens and pornography invading their school libraries.” The document also calls for deleting the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion from every federal rule as part of a drive to “make the institutions of American civil society hard targets for woke culture warriors.”

Meanwhile, conservative activists see an opening around “woke” culture issues, especially since other right-wing social positions, like opposition to abortion, are politically unpopular. They’re looking at polls showing that majorities of Americans support restrictions on gender-affirming medical treatments for minors and trans women participating in women’s sports, Wilson said (though a majority also support prohibitions on discrimination against trans people). While Trump doesn’t actually care much about religion, he does love stoking culture wars, so his personal interests are perhaps more aligned with the anti-woke crusaders than with old-line evangelical abortion opponents. All this suggests that trans rights and DEI could remain fixations for him and his party in a second term.

Christian nationalists

A third group that’s influential for Trump on social issues is the Christian nationalist movement, whose adherents believe “the U.S. is a Christian nation and that the country’s laws should therefore be rooted in Christian values,” according to NPR. More than half of Republicans supported these views in a 2023 PRRI/Brookings survey, and the ideology counts among its adherents Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who has said, “I am a Christian and I say it proudly: We should be Christian nationalists.” The idea that American laws should be rooted in Christianity isn’t new on the right, but some observers are concerned about the extent to which Christian nationalists today prioritize their worldview over democracy. The Society for American Civic Renewal (SACR), for example, a group open only to straight Christian men who hold supportive views of Trump, has discussed an “aligned future regime” stocked with loyalists, Josh Kovensky writes for Talking Points Memo. SACR’s founder, Charles Haywood, has speculated openly about his role in a potential civil war, writing that he might serve as a “warlord” in “conditions where central authority has broken down,” such as “more-or-less open warfare with the federal government, or some subset or remnant of it.”

Abortion comes up frequently as a touchstone for Christian nationalist groups, said Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a professor of history and gender studies at Calvin University who studies religion and politics. “I have seen that issue surface in explicitly Christian nationalist spaces as a reason to jettison democracy,” Du Mez told Vox. Christian nationalists were heavily involved in the January 6 Capitol riot, experts say, with four of six protest permits issued that day going to groups with links to the movement. Adherents remain some of Trump’s most committed supporters, said Laura Field, a political theorist and scholar in residence at American University. “Some of them talk about him as a new Cyrus” — a Persian king referenced in the Old Testament who did not worship the Jewish God but nonetheless carried out God’s plans, Field said. Trump speaks directly to such supporters in prayer-style closings of recent campaign speeches, promising, “we are one movement, one people, one family and one glorious nation under God.” He has also leaned into the legacy of January 6, calling the date of the insurrection a “beautiful day” and playing a song at rallies sung by incarcerated participants, whom he calls “J6 hostages.”

While it’s unclear how much of the vision (or visions) held by Christian nationalists could realistically come to pass in a second Trump administration, it is clear that these groups now represent, to a great degree, Trump’s base, one he’s been courting zealously on what he hopes is his second journey to the White House.

Death is a process. I’ve used that phrase so many times now. During this process, each organ of the body shuts down at a different rate according to its own internal cellular metabolism. And then this in turn triggers further processes which eventually lead to the decomposition and natural disposal of the body. Dust to dust. The simple process of death that many of us recognize from a bedside may last only seconds – or it can last tens of seconds or even minutes. Technically, it lasts hours as the body dies cell by cell. Some cells, skin and bone, can remain ‘alive’ for as much as a day: these cells continue to metabolize without oxygen until their reserves are finally exhausted. In fact, these cells can be removed and then grown in a laboratory for some days after a body has been certified dead. For a few hours there might be random heartbeats. Digestion may continue. White blood cells can move independently for up to twelve hours. Muscles may twitch. But that’s not life. There may be exhalation. But that’s not breathing. Various definitions try to pin down death, but each definition is a struggle; morally and scientifically. When the individual will never again communicate or deliberately interact with the environment, when he is irreversibly unconscious and unaware of the world and his own existence: that’s death. Of course, that may define someone in a deep sleep or under a general anaesthetic – conditions that are reversible. It may also define someone in a coma or persistent vegetative state. But these patients do have heartbeats and show at least some brainstem activity: that’s not death. When there is no heartbeat, no breath, and the ECG shows a flat line, that’s real death. Occasionally people have told me that they knew the exact moment, sitting at a bedside, when a relative died. But they are almost certainly wrong. They are referring to the time that breathing and heartbeat stopped. They witnessed a somatic death. Cellular death takes longer.

This chapter discusses some of the most common immunological GI diseases seen in clinic, such as autoimmune gastritis, chronic Helicobacter pylori gastritis, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs; Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis [UC], microscopic colitis).

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract has the greatest concentration of immune cells of any organ in the body. The gut employs a number of strategies to promote mucosal structural integrity and maintain homeostatic immune regulation in response to continuous exposure to environmental and dietary antigens, as well as commensal microbes, pathogens, and their metabolic products. Despite these defences, the gastrointestinal tract is vulnerable to chronic immune-mediated inflammation from pathogenic organisms, as well as autoimmunity and immunodeficiency.

This chapter discusses some of the most common immunological diseases of the GI tract that are likely to be encountered in the clinic, such as autoimmune gastritis, chronic Helicobacter pylori gastritis, celiac disease, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, and eosinophilic esophagitis, and GI complications of primary immunodeficiency. The coverage focuses on clinical manifestations, disease mechanisms, and approaches to diagnosis and treatment for these conditions.

There are two types of immunity: active and passive:

When our own immune system is in charge of protecting us from a pathogen, this is referred to as active immunity.

Immunity is classified into two types: innate and adaptive.

The innate immune system: rapid and all-around effectiveness. The skin and mucous membranes provide protection. Immune system cells (defence cells) and proteins provide protection. The adaptive immune system: Directly combating germs. T lymphocytes are immune cells.

Immunologic tests use an antigen to detect the presence of antibodies to a pathogen in the specimens, or an antibody to detect the presence of an antigen in the specimens. Laboratory immunological tests are created by creating artificial antibodies that exactly "match" the pathogen in question.

Primary: These are genetic disorders that are usually hereditary and are usually present at birth.

Studies consistently show that #physicians are more likely than non-#physicians to experience work-related stressors prior to #suicide. Still, the exact nature of these stressors was unknown. To better understand and characterize the job stressors that contribute to #physician #suicide, researchers at UC San Diego Health reviewed the death investigation narratives from 200 #physician suicides collected by a national database between 2003 and 2018. Using natural language processing and thematic analysis — tools for extracting and interpreting data from the reports — the team was able to identify the main issues contributing to physician job #stress and #suicide.  The study, published June 29, 2022 in #Suicide and Life-Threatening #Behavior, found six overarching themes in the reports. These included an incapacity to work due to deterioration of physical health, substance use that was jeopardizing employment, the interaction between #mentalhealth and work-related issues, relationship conflicts affecting work, legal problems and increased #financial #stress.  “We often overlook the physical health of our #healthcareworkers, but poor health can lead to difficulty performing tasks at work, which then leads to job stress and #mentalhealthissues,” said corresponding author Kristen Kim, MD, a resident #physician in psychiatry at UC San Diego Health.  The authors outlined several short- and long-term solutions for #healthcaresystems to consider.  In the short-term, they stressed the need to improve physicians’ access to primary care services, minimize their scheduling challenges, and address their concerns about confidentiality. Kim encouraged #healthcareworkers to utilize resources like the UC San Diego Healer Education Assessment and Referral (HEAR) program, which provides access to confidential #mentalhealth counseling and was recently endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Health Worker Burnout. In the long-term, the authors called for broader structural and cultural changes to address workplace stress and poor #physician #self-care.   “The unspoken culture of medicine encourages self-sacrifice, deferred needs and delayed rewards,” said Kim. “We always want to put our #patients first, but healers cannot optimally heal unless they themselves are first whole.”  The authors highlighted the importance of cultivating a sense of safety and community among #physicians. They also suggested that #healthcaresystems and medical #schools provide additional personal finance education and legal support.  “There is a lot of work to be done,” said Kim, “but identifying and acknowledging the problem is always the first step towards a solution, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” Co-authors include: Gordon Y.
