Just to point out that while George Santos was finally expelled from the U.S. House of Representatives after being charged with 23 felony crimes, committing astounding levels of fraud, and fabricating absolutely stupid amounts of his background, it still required the heavy-lifting of Democratic members to close the deal, and a majority of Republicans voted to allow him to remain.
House Speaker Mike Johnson -- who was unanimously elected as the Republican leader of the House by GOP members in October -- continued to demonstrate his moral leadership by voting to let Santos hold on to his seat in Congress.

Keeping an eye on the UK election results as an American is wild.
Labour is the red party? Tories are blue? Who are all these other people? I heard there would be darth vader. I was promised darth vader.
Are the liberal democrats actually liberal or democratic? The reform party are apparently Nazis. Is the UK Green party like the US green party?
The BBC reporters all seem really confused.
What is this slider thing?
I mean, I'm glad that it looks like the Tories are on their way out... but Now I know how the rest of the world feels about U.S. elections.

I don’t care how much you don’t want to vote for Kamala/Walz, if you vote for anyone but them, I don’t want to hear crying for the next 4 years under Trump.
Like I get it if you feel like the Green Party are more aligned with your views, I do, but this is NOT the election to be splitting the vote. America is in danger. We’ve got one shot at saving it, which is the Democratic Party. We do not have any other option to avoid another Trump presidency.
Please, please, please,

Here's a little story and my 2 cents:
Honduras (where I'm from) experienced in 2009 a U.S. backed coup d'état, which led the country to live a lot of what the United States is currently undergoing, namely the extreme polarization of society, the fear of the rampant threat of a scapegoat (in HN it was communists who would allegedly take away your children, belongings, etc) or foreign forces (in HN's case it was Chavez, in the case of the Ú.S. it's illegal immigrants), and the outrageous lies from all mainstream media to justify the illegal regime's repressive actions against the population. Zelaya's wife is the current president of Honduras and none of that is happening, because neither of them is a socialist (not that socialists take away your belongings or children lol), but social democrats. I will never ever forget when Manuel Zelaya (the democratically elected president ousted by the putsch) clandestinely returned to the country after being ousted, specifically when Hillary Clinton qualified this action as 'reckless' and instead of supporting his return, she pushed for new elections.
On the other hand, a huge part of the population (the resistance) realized all of this and started to educate themselves and others politically. They took action through activism, protests (which received violent crackdown resulting in the death of peaceful unarmed protesters by the military), art, culture, etc.
People realized we had a two-party system problem, where the very same elites that backed the coup controlled both and whoever was in power (like Animal Farm's pigs vs the humans). The part of the population that was aware of all of this worked incessantly for 12 years to break the two-party system. They succeded, but for that the country paid a high price: 3 far-right extremely corrupt narco governments that managed to entirely plunder an already extremely poor country. Only then, the majority woke up. It seems a recurrent fact in history that the the worst has first to happen for change to occur, which is extremely sad.

It looks like the tally of the popular vote is showing that Donald Trump received about the same number of votes in 2024 as he did in 2020. If it's any small consolation, the number of hateful/racist/misogynistic/transphobic people in the US is not increasing but it is maintaining. The bigger problem is that Kamala Harris received significantly fewer votes than Joe Biden did in 2020 (although, interestingly, she already has more votes than Hillary Clinton received in 2016).
A lot of the analysis is focusing on American voters (or demographics within them) shifting to the right. But the real problem is that the vast majority of Americans eligible to vote are not participating. I know this makes a lot of people angry and want to rage at non-voters for their irrationality. But it won't do much good because 1. the non-voters are not going to see your social media posts, and 2. if they do hear you calling them stupid, it's not going to persuade them.
I feel that we really need to understand WHY so many people are disillusioned by the electoral process and what we can do to address that. The Republicans learned long ago that they could sew doubt by repeating that all politicians are corrupt and that government is the enemy of the people. They know they have their block of ~75 million who will vote for their particular form of corruption and if they suppress the rest of the vote, they win!
You will also often hear "both parties are the same." Now you can argue until your blue in the face that this is patently false. But what you'll be missing is that for the millions of Americans living on the margins of society, which party holds the Presidency, Congress, Governership, et al makes no material difference in their lives. Campaigning on a strong economy has no effect on people living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to support their families, saddled with increasing debts, and unable to afford adequate housing. The problem with voter turnout in the United States is routed in the deep levels of despair people are living that leads to the belief that voting makes no difference.
Now, I don't have any easy solutions to these problems, but I think there are two broad approaches that Democratic Party need to attempt:
Wherever Democrats have the power to do so (federal/state/local), remove the barriers to voting. Make registration automatic or offer same day registrations, offer mail-in ballots to everyone, extend early voting and hours at the polls (and make sure those polls are accessible to all communities), and allow ranked choice voting. Fight Republican voter suppression efforts tooth & nail and repeal the legislation already in place. Make GOTV programs year round not just in the weeks before elections.
Wherever Democrats have the power to do so (federal/state/local), provide programs that demonstrably make the lives of the millions of marginalized Americans better. I know this goes against politicians instincts to appeal to the people who vote. But moving to the right or working toward bipartisan legislation will not win over enough of those ~75 million hateful voters to make a difference. Instead go after the ~100 million nonvoters by directly attacking the roots of their despair and make them believe that their government works for them. As Abraham Lincoln said “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” But we're going to need to be a government of the people for that to succeed.

I don't tend to talk about politics on my Tumblr, but I'll make an exception this one time.
I would like to say I am shocked by the results of the US elections, but that would be a lie.
People are tired of the same old same old blue dog, pretending to be a progressive, while simultaneously courting and platforming neocons, neolibs, war criminals, and sex pests.
In Missouri (a safe red state) abortion access, and raise of minimum wage and required sick leave were on the ballot and won! Kamala did not!
Sure, part of that is racism and misogyny, but a lot of it is that the Dems have not learned from 2016 or 2020. They keep their head in the sand and will no doubt continue doing so.
They had notorious predator Bill Clinton lecture Palestinian expats on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! Not to mention the creepy alliance with the Cheneys!
Already looking forward to 2028, when the Dems send out another old white man, hoping to pander to extremists and the center that is dying out.
But hey, at least Kamala got what she wanted—a Republican in the cabinet.

A perfect demonstration of how gutless most of the Republicans in the House of Representatives are is the fact that, in a public vote, there were 25 Republicans willing to vote against Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House. In a secret ballot, where their names would be withheld from the insurrectionist cult followers who they've allowed to take over their party, 112 Republicans voted against Jordan. Those votes happened on the same day.

This is a great question. In order to win, Democrats need to convince the American people — especially in rural areas and “red” states — that their ideas and plans will benefit the wallets of more people than Republicans. If people don’t feel like an honest day’s work can feed, house, provide healthcare, and clothe themselves, with some left over for entertainment, emergency savings, and long term retirement savings, then they will keep demanding change even though there are only 2 viable political parties. To oversimplify, red and blue are not merely team colors; they stand for specific governing principles:
Republicans are pro-business, anti-union, anti-regulation, pro-free market, and often shrink the size of government spending on social services (eg, no welfare, eliminating pensions and social security) while increasing military investments and spending (sometimes called being a hawk). Republicans often think private companies can do things better and faster than the government with less “waste,” and view the government with suspicion. Ronald Reagan, the Republican president throughout the 1980s, famously said, “I think you all know that I've always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help.” American Republicans are extremely conservative and theocratic (meaning a government by god(s)) compared to other conservative parties around the world.
Democrats are pro-worker, pro-union, pro-regulation, pro-government benefits, and generally against excessive military interventions (sometimes called being a dove….or a hippie). Democrats often think there’s a checks-and-balances system that needs to be in place between private companies and the government. Even though Americans refer to Democrats as “liberal,” they really aren’t — Democrats are a centrist party compared to other “liberal” parties around the world. But Democrats are all we have because it’s a 2-party system.
If I have to sum up the economic differences in one sentence, Republican vs Democrat comes down to who you trust more, companies or the government, to make life better for 340+ million people. Your answer will likely depend on your life experiences. For example, Republicans typically claim to be the party of financial responsibility because they prefer “small government,” but over my lifetime, Democrats have been the party that generally reins in Republican overspending (usually due to wars, vanity projects like a border wall, or paying a private company to provide what was previously a government service — this almost always increases government costs by >10-20% because someone has to profit). Democrats have also successfully gotten the United States out of (i) the 2008 global financial crisis (which was itself arguably caused by deregulation/lack of regulation) and (ii) what was nearly a massive COVID recession, with current inflation being the expected side effect of preventing a massive freaking recession (but IMO, Biden and the Democrats did a really poor job of marketing this tradeoff to the American people — I’ll get back to marketing in a moment…)
Personally, I think there are things that private companies can’t or won’t do because they won’t make enough money, and government needs to fill those gaps. I also think there are times when private industries make money but fail to actually help people (eg, healthcare), so it’s the role of government to step in. Moreover, I believe in sensible regulation to keep people safe, like food safety laws. Why should anyone get hurt or die just so some CEO can maximize shareholder value?? Finally, I am for freedom of religion and am very much against any kind of theocracy. Therefore, without even touching any social issues, it’s clear I’m a Democrat, and not much will ever sway me to vote for a Republican.
With that in mind, there are 2 main issues for Democrats to solve in the next election cycle:
1. Democrats need better marketing narratives because they struggle at the national level to connect with people’s feelings. This isn’t about facts or logic. It’s entirely about emotional connection. For all the actual policies and plans that the Democrats stand for, their brand is elite, coastal, urban, nerdy, wimpy, passive, excessively intellectual, un-fun, out of touch, etc. The fact is that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris come from middle class families and do not have Ivy League educations. Meanwhile, Trump was born to New York City elite, went to an Ivy League college, and has been a Manhattan socialite since before I was born. He literally lives in a gilded penthouse high above Manhattan when he’s not at his Florida mansion compound.
Yet somehow people think Trump represents them and understands their struggles better than Biden and Harris. They think Biden and Harris are out of touch while the man in the gold Manhattan penthouse “gets” them. WHY?? Because Trump makes people feel heard. All his petty anger, his negativity, and his victim complexes aren’t just him being a spoiled brat; he’s saying the things that people want to say. He mirrors their feelings back to them. He doesn’t actually care or intend to do anything to help them. But he makes them feel like he might, all facts and evidence to the contrary.
Look, I don’t think Trump is a particularly smart man or good businessman. But he IS a brilliant marketer. Probably one of the best in the last 50 years, if not century. Even the extremely well-documented trail of victims he’s left in the wake of his infomercial schemes isn’t enough to convince voters he’s a con man. Trump’s ability to create an emotional connection is so strong, especially among people who are desperately looking for it, that facts, policies, and plans don’t matter.
2. Democrats need infrastructure so their marketing narrative is voiced by trusted friends and neighbors. By aligning with church-going Christians, the Republicans didn’t just obtain a block of reliable voters. They obtained the hyper-local infrastructure where the Republican party story can be told. In other words, Trump creates the initial emotional connection and marketing narrative, but then it’s local churches that reinforce his message every. single. week. It’s a regular meeting place where people can talk about which candidate they support and why.
It’s influencing, plain and simple.
The Democrats don’t really have this infrastructure anymore. It used to come from unions, but as those crumble, it’s hard to find a replacement. Emails, text messages, TV ads, door-to-door canvassing by random campaign staffers, yard signs, etc. do not change minds. Telling people they have their facts wrong doesn’t change minds.
However, talking about how you feel, and why you believe what you believe, can absolutely sway opinions. For example, when Republicans talk about lowering taxes, I like to say that I’m happy to pay taxes if the money will feed hungry children, help veterans & first responders recover from injuries, revitalize a town after a natural disaster, etc. I do not think such things should be dependent on charities or churches that can pick and choose who is worthy. IMO it’s the role of government to provide for ALL who are less fortunate, because nobody else will do so reliably.
Of course, I’m just some random person on the internet. I’m literally out of touch for you. But you can see how having these discussions in real life, face to face, makes it real and tangible. Talk about what you believe so those around you know that Democrats are not “urban coastal elites.” Show that Democrats stand for actual economic policies, not just “social justice” and DEI. Democrats are real people — real Americans — in every community across the country who believe in the power of a government by the people to good things for the people.
