i don't like most of the rent live changes but this is something I think about quite a bit tbh. by the end of 1992 all that will be left of angel is mark's videos of her. maybe all that's left of mimi, too, depending on how long she lives after tge end of the show. by the end of 1993 there's a pretty good chance that all that'll be left of collins and roger will be mark's videos too.

Why “I’ll Cover You” is THE most important/significant song in Rent

(or well!! why i think it is!!)

so, of course, the musical begins with benny demanding ALL of last year’s rent from mark and roger. this leads into the first big number, “Rent,” where they introduce the force that will drive the first act:

“how we gonna pay, how we gonna pay, how we gonna pay, last year’s rent?”

so, yeah. Rent the musical is LITERALLY about paying Rent. or…is it?

that’s where “i’ll cover you” comes in. so, this song already has a bit of a double meaning in my opinion. i think it’s *literally* about angel and collins moving in together, but metaphorically about making someone your home, you know?

“live in my house, i’ll be your shelter”

however, that’s not what i want to talk about. i want to talk about THIS line right here:

“i think they meant it when they said you can’t buy love, now i know you can rent it, a new lease you are, my love.”

ARGH. WHAT. this is so much more PROFOUND when you think about how this might foreshadow angel’s death. like, “you can’t have love forever, but you can have it for now, and that’s what matters”

So, yeah. Rent might be literally about paying rent. but…maybe it’s about the people you’re “renting” too? maybe it’s about living and loving and not worrying about the end of your love?
