A lot of people don't quite seem to understand queerplatonic relationships at first glance, because at their core, they are designed to be undefinable. Their existence is inherently critical of the pre-established idea of what relationships and attraction means, which is why people seem to think they don't stand up to scrutiny.

Several people intuitively insist on trying to fit queerplatonic neatly in between "friendship" and "romance" in the relationship hierarchy. As if they're inherently something "more" than a friend but "less" than a romantic relationship. However, from my understanding, this is the exact thing the label of queerplatonic is actively trying to fight against.

I'm not saying that this isn't what some queerplatonic relationships are, in a sense, but it's certainly not all of them. Queerplatonic relationships come in all shapes and sizes, and do so by design. There is nothing you can't do in a queerplatonic relationship and nothing you can't feel. Once you start venturing into the community you will find queerplatonic relationships where people have sex, queerplatonic relationships where there is romantic attraction involved on some level, queerplatonic relationships that are prioritized less than friendships, people who have romantic relationships, but are more actively committed to their queerplatonic partner, and plenty of other variations.

Queerplatonic partners are not inherently a "leveled up" version of friendship. They are not inherently a romantic relationship but without the romance. "Queerplatonic" is a word that exists in defiance of the way mainstream society views relationships and their hierarchies altogether. The point of it is not to lie on a sliding scale between friendship and romance, but rather to acknowledge that the widespread understanding of relationships doesn't include us. We have made the active decision to carve out our own space for this reason. Where we set the expectations, feel the ways we feel, and do the things we do, without anyone telling us it's not correct or enough.

That's why they're important. That's why it is a useful label, especially to aspec people, who have often felt alienated from relationship definitions and specificity in feelings. And I think it's important to acknowledge that.

idk if this is accurate but i’ve felt like in previous seasons riz & gorgug have been one of the inter-bad kids dynamics we’ve seen the least of & this season has been so great in that aspect. gorgug having helped make some of riz’s magic gear. riz helping gorgug with his studies. the shared birthday party. gorgug’s gift to riz being something he himself made to protect riz. riz’s gift to gorgug being something he illegally grabbed to protect gorgug. gorgug who utilizes rage to put his body on the line for his friends & riz who will take deep levels of mental stress for his friends. even though it was within the context of a joke, riz calling gorgug an “absolute sweetie.” like yea they might not be in a band together or both part of a presidential campaign team or owlbears teammates, but they’d go to war for each other, because they’re best friends.

The way we discuss prophecy in fandom is genuinely fascinating. GRRM spends so much time showing how different characters have different interpretations of the same thing based on their own cultural contexts. He says that prophecy is tricky to navigate through multiple characters, showing that even the most careful practitioner can get almost everything wrong and fall victim to their own fallacies (see Mel). So tell me why the main takeaway for large parts of this fandom is “prophecy stupid, it doesn’t matter”. My brothers and sisters in R’hllor, GRRM didn’t invent multiple characters (three of whom are main POVs!!) who can see the future for this to be the conclusion. This is a FANTASY series. Please I’m begging, let us be serious 🥲

I have been awake all night and I think, since we got to follow Zuko from S1 even though he didn’t join the Gaang until the bitter end, we should’ve gotten the same for Toph. In between season 1 and early season 2 plots, we’d occasionally cut to this earth kingdom noble family for seemingly no reason.

Ok they are rich and they have the daughter. Alright she’s blind that’s interesting. The Beifongs will comment about canon events and their daughter is quiet and perfect in the background. Then one episode we see her earthbend something small, intriguing. Also intriguing she only looks helpless and lost when other people are around. We get more solo perspectives of her, she’s a bit more coarse away from her parents. Her earthbending continues to be used secretly, impressive but not monumental. We suspect she’ll be similar to Katara, an eager, untrained bender who learns as she teaches Aang. We wait with anticipation for this vulnerable girl to see the world and own her power.

And then they drop The Blind Bandit episode and every episode that follows are unchanged and oh. Oh. Now we are really meeting Toph.

Something about having absolutely no choice in who you marry. About being literally forced by the law to spill blood - to accept this stranger as your husband over a man you truly care for or accept the fact that the man you love might die because you put him in danger. Something about risking becoming the wife of a man you've never even seen before a few minutes prior because you know anything would be better than putting your beloved in harm's way. Something about the trust inherent in that decision and in the way she speaks of it after. Truthfully, T'Pring doesn't know the captain and she doesn't know Spock. Either one of them could have taken her as their wife but she does know Stonn. She knows that Stonn will remain by her side no matter what. They made a plan together. They have an agreement which T'Pring believes will be upheld even though the plan changed with the arrival of Kirk. Stonn will always be there, always, and Stonn will be hers. Something about the language used around T'Pring: Ownership, subservience, non-personhood. T'Pring is an object that Spock can win. She cannot reject him, she has no say in the matter other than having Stonn 'claim' her instead. Even when Spock leaves after being very clearly rejected by T'Pring he says "Stonn, she is yours." as if despite her clear rejection he still owns her and is must formally 'give' her to Stonn. But the language T'Pring uses around Stonn is a break from that: "There was Stonn who wanted very much to be my consort, and I wanted him." Stonn who wanted very much to be HER consort and she WANTED him. The language here is very particular - It's not, for example: "Stonn wanted me to be his wife" - he is HERS. And she WANTS him. There's a mutual affection there and a strong trust - a trust which seems to be well founded since Stonn (though silent) stands by her side at the end of the episode. <- That might seem small but if Spock would reject her for 'daring to challenge' (again, the language is not 'because I don't want you' but more of an implied disgust at her having the AUDACITY to reject him) then it's not a stretch to assume that it'd be considered an insult in the TOS Vulcan society to NOT choose Stonn as her champion after a prior agreement. Anyway T'Pring was a woman in an impossible situation within a society which saw her as more of an object than a person and she wanted Stonn and Stonn wanted to be hers and she trusted that he would understand if she had to publicly pick someone else to ensure his life would be spared and he did understand.

some people in this fandom - like myself - are in recovery and it really stings to see people putting drug addiction in itself on blast.

yes, what happened didn’t have to happen the way it did… there were a ton of inconsistencies and i don’t completely understand the motivations there. the writers pretty much defined klaus by his addiction with the way everything unfolded - which is very wrong on their part.

but when choosing your words, please understand that being an addict in itself is not a flaw in character. there are so many worse things a person can be - even if they do, tragically, regress. even if they do hit rock bottom and face dangerous repercussions.

one of the few parts of s4 i appreciated was allison explaining to claire that klaus is very sick. addiction is an illness and it can come back to haunt you at any time.

My favorite thing in the world aside from cosmic horror is the trope of characters that are kind, polite, and/or civil having a moment where they are just... not.

Because like... being kind is a choice. It's a logical, almost thoughtless one for them more oft than not but it's still... a choice. One that they actively make despite anything that would force them to be otherwise. Being polite and civil is also a choice.

And its just like... for someone like Caio, how much would you have to push them in order to have them not choose that. And I'm not talking about like "oooo make them evil" but more like... retaliatory in nature. Because there's a difference in weight between "I want to be kind." and "I am choosing to be kind." And i feel like Caio often falls into the category of choosing kindness. Choosing to be polite. Choosing to be civil.

Of course, he has a lot of things to unpack about himself and his behaviors but like... one of the things that brought this on was the bingos I was filling out, coincidentally. Every time I looked at like "is dog/cat coded", i would look at Caio and he would like... shrug. Even though, in my head, he is like an obedient dog brought to heel--held by a leash that is tighter than he thinks. A leash that is tugged harder than he thinks it is. but will loosen the leash of someone else

Sometimes, I liken him to a bird with clipped wings. Feeble thing that will always need help. Something that will die without help.

And why this plays into him choosing to be kind is the restraint he exercises in his efforts to be so. Sometimes, it's him being civil instead of outright kind but... like... even that is a kindness. Like he is choosing to help others... despite the fact that he 100% needs help himself. Not a thought to it for others but also not sparing any for himself most times.

So like... excuse him if he, for a moment--for a second, contemplates killing a person that severely wronged him. He's not one for excessive violence ( so no torture ) but he's a surgeon. he knows the body exceptionally well... and that tends to be a boon when you intend to see someone suffer in a similar manner to how you have suffered--clipped wings and all.

He's kind to others but he must also be kind to himself and make it hurt as much as possible for someone that has tried him and failed.

sometimes, simply turning the other cheek as someone bleeds out is a kindness. other times, it's "gently" pinching their nose and covering their mouth. perhaps, some third time, it'll be knowing what they're allergic to and introducing it into their system in some way. and watching.

small kindnesses for those that do not deserve the grace and peace that comes with "do no harm".
