You know, based on Snotlout's reaction towards Fishlegs as "Thor Bonecrusher", I think he shouldn't have had a one-sided rivalry with Eret. He should have had a crush on him.
I will always take RTTE characterization over how any of the characters written in THW, and to a certain extent, the second movie.
Also the fact that there were people on Reddit claiming that Snotlout is 100% straight even after watching "Big Man on Berk" is absolutely ridiculous. He literally kisses Fishlegs on the cheek, talks about "what might have been" and says his heart is broken. Two straight characters could do nothing but touch pinkies and people say they're in love, but the rarely affectionate Snotlout KISSES ANOTHER MAN ON THE CHEEK while talking about his feelings for him and it's suddenly just bros bein dudes. Ok sure.

The Hidden World Themes
(Rediscovered this on my computer and decided to dust it off and post it here on Tumblr XD)
The intended themes of HTTYD: THW, as far as I can tell, are about maturing, letting go, accepting change and standing on your own. These are all good themes and I agree with them in theory. The problem is the way they were handled. I’m sorry, but if the themes have gotten mixed up with implications about segregation and ‘otherness’, romantic vs platonic relationships being portrayed as a binary or one better than the other, and looking for a quick fix solution to avoid problems rather than face and solve them…then something has gone very wrong. I’m sure many of you may insist that Dean didn’t intend for these implications to be in the movie, but they are there regardless. If anything, the fact that Dean apparently didn’t notice or dismissed these issues with his script makes him more culpable, not less. Furthermore, does a franchise based on the premise ‘Vikings who ride dragons’ really need to be realistic? I’m not expecting a play by play of how history would change, but when you put dragons, or any supernatural element, in the ‘real world’, that changes things by definition. ‘Realism’ means addressing typically ignored consequences, not ‘copying’ reality (I recommend Overly Sarcastic Productions ‘Trope Talk: Realism’ for a more comprehensive exploration). That’s what reality TV is for. As I was saying…
Theme One – Coming of Age Dean wanted HTTYD to be Hiccup’s coming of age story, but he also projects onto Hiccup, and therein lies the biggest problem with the movie (and really the franchise as a whole). It revolves entirely around Hiccup, to the point that the other characters feel like NPCs, and Dean is simply ‘playing’ as Hiccup. Snotlout, the twins and even Fishlegs are all portrayed as being way more immature, irresponsible and ignorant than Hiccup ever was, but their complete lack of development is used for ‘comic relief’ (and I use the phrase very loosely). They don’t actually matter, because this is The Hiccup Show, aka The Dean Show.
What gets me is the fact that the movie seems to equate ‘coming of age’ with “get married”. Right from the start Hiccup is told he should marry Astrid, and then at the end when he sends the dragons away he’s rewarded for this ‘mature’ decision by… marrying Astrid. Something that was going to happen anyway, because of course it was. There was no way the franchise wouldn’t end with a Hiccstrid wedding scene. Let’s give the ‘coming of age’ arc to Snotlout instead, shall we? After all, he’s had development before regarding his dad Spitelout, so we can run with that. Instead of flirting with Valka (eww), we can have him be overly competitive towards Eret, to the point it’s affecting missions. Snotlout blames Eret for leaving Ruffnut behind, and Eret asks what Snotlouts’ problem with him is. To which Snotlout responds that he’s jealous, because Eret is tall, strong, handsome (wait what?), talented… even Spitelout likes him more! So Eret tells Spitelout that if he really said he prefers a complete stranger over his own son, he’s a shit dad, and then he punches Spitelout in the face. Because who among us hasn’t wanted to see Spitelout get punched in the face? Seeing this would give Snotlout the courage to stand up to his dad later in the movie. / Theme Two – With Love Comes Loss Oh boy. I get it; Dean was going for a classic ‘if you love them, let them go’ message and used this flashback scene to foreshadow/parallel it. But Stoick and Hiccup’s situations are completely different! 1) Stoick thought Valka was dead. It’s not like she decided to go and live with dragons, and he respected her decision to do so. They were separated by something outside of his control and he had to come to terms with that. 2) Stoick didn’t expect the other men on Berk to give up their wives because he’d lost his. Now then, who shall we give the ‘with love comes loss’ arc to? How about Valka and Gobber, who are also mourning Stoick. Perhaps they both unintentionally put pressure on Hiccup to be like his dad, trying to vicariously have Stoick with them through his son, if that makes sense. We could replace the flashback with a scene of them worried about Hiccup. One thing leads to another and they realise that they’ve been so focused on wanting Stoick back in some way that they haven’t just mourned and reminisced together. / Theme Three – Embracing Change “Look at you, embracing change. I’m proud of you” – says Astrid, to… I’m sorry, who? Hiccup? As in Hiccup ‘changed the whole of Berk’ Haddock? Hiccup ‘first Viking to ride a dragon’ Haddock? What the fuck? This line is stupid and makes no sense. Actually a lot of Astrid’s lines are stupid and make no sense, but I won’t get into that. The point is, Hiccup is the last person who needs to learn to ‘embrace change’. In fact, let’s just cut this theme entirely. There’s such a thing as having too many themes crammed into one story. / Theme Four – Stand/Fly on Your Own
Now for the theme that even the marketing played up. Hiccup thinks he’s nothing without Toothless, so he needs to let Toothless go. That’s the only way for him to stand on his own… or is it? Yes, in real life circumstances change, friends and even families drift apart, and people should be able to ‘stand on their own’ as independent individuals, absolutely – but we do this all the time without having to cut off ties to those we care about. There are hundreds of people in healthy, balanced relationships who still have friends beyond their significant other. ‘If you love them, let them go’ is a nice sentiment, but to me it applies better to unhealthy, imbalanced relationships i.e.: a parent who can’t deal with their child growing up, or an ex-lover struggling to accept that their partner has moved on.
As a real world example, if someone is dependent on another (often a romantic partner) for self-worth, the solution would not be to have them cut ties with their source of affirmation. It would be better to help them find self-worth within themselves, so they can ‘stand on their own’, without having to rely on another person’s approval or support…but that other person can still be there. So let’s address the Buffalord in the room; Hiccup’s apparent dependency on Toothless. For the sake of argument, we’ll assume he is too reliant on his best friend as a source of self-worth. The issue that needs addressing isn’t his reliance on Toothless, it’s his lack of self-worth without the dragons. Sending the dragons away didn’t need to be the ‘solution’ to this problem. He and Toothless had an equal, healthy partnership, shown through their matched missing limbs, similar personalities, and the way they treat each other.
HTTYD1 gives us a perfectly valid reason for why Hiccup would associate his self-worth with Toothless and the dragons. After all, if it weren’t for training Toothless, he would have stayed an outcast in his own tribe. People tell him “You’re nothing without your dragon”, but these people are usually the villains. As in the ones he has no good reason to listen to. If he believes them on some level, then that means neither he, Stoick, Gobber or Astrid ever addressed the issues that led to his lack of self-esteem and his need for an emotional crutch (which ends up being Astrid). That is the real problem, not his friendship with Toothless. If we want to give Hiccup an arc about ‘standing on his own’, let’s pick up where the second movie left off and have him still be torn between his duties as chief and what he actually wants to do with his life. At the end he understands that he doesn’t need Toothless or the dragons to define himself with, but he wants to keep studying and rescuing the dragons regardless. He chooses his own path rather than trying to follow in his father’s footsteps, thus culminating the arc of individualism/self worth that started in the first movie. I’ve also come up with a parallel negative arc for Grimmel that can tie into this ‘rewrite’, but that can be it’s own post, since this one is long enough as it is. So, how would you guys improve on the themes in THW?

If the third HTTYD film actually wanted to end like the books, the dragons wouldn't have all left like that

Completely agree. I saw the movie in theaters for my birthday but the more I thought about it afterward, the more it didn't make sense. If the dragon's went to the Hidden World, the cannibalistic dragons would wipe out the other dragons over the course of however long it takes. Plus there are dragons actively helping others such as the Defenders of the Wing and Wing Maidens. Speaking of which, where were Berks allies? That's what I want to know. The Outcasts, the Berserkers, and the two mentioned earlier; WHERE ARE THEY. If they had at least mentioned them I wouldn't be so mad but they didn't. Another change they did to the detriment of the movie.
Speaking of detriment;
The base theme for the series is two warring factions coming together and becoming stronger because of it. But with how the third movie went, it only proved the villain right!
And do not get me started on the character writing and designs. Characters seemed to act familiarly enough on the surface, but those that know and love the characters had no doubt already noticed the changes in the few minutes they were on screen; Snot flirting with Valka (gross), Tuff making fun of Hiccup (which wasn't funny at all), Ruff acting more like a stereotypical blonde (she typically the more sensible one between the two. Most of the time), Fish and Eret didn't do much in the movie aside from Eret telling Hiccup about Grimmel. And Toothless, he acted more like a slobering dog (and I love dogs, don't get me wrong) than an intelligent creature with cat-esque traits. And the designs. Why did they take away their imperfections? Hiccup doesn't have his gape teeth, some of the scars he had, heck he doesn't even have noticeable freckles anymore.
As for the Light Fury. If I remember right, out of the 1 hour and 44 minute movie, she only had around 15 minutes of screen time... what was the point. I'd really like to see a full rewrite of the movie that gives this series a proper ending, because the movie and Nine Realms certainly didn't.
Sorry for the rant but I really needed it out of my system.😅
I’m going to say it.
I don’t think How to Train Your Dragon 3 was good.
Tumblr media
Not when you compare it to literally either of the other movies. Certainly not as a conclusion.
I mean, the first movie was about a boy who manages to understand a hostile dragon species and bring peace to two warring factions, which is a parallel for his relationship with his father. The second film was about how sometimes, peace has to be fought for, and Hiccup’s whole identity was in contrast with that—because while his mother ran from conflict and his father leapt at it too eagerly, he had always been the one to stop the fighting. Then he has to learn that the things we love are worth protecting.
And after he learns that humans and dragons can learn to understand each other and coexist—after he learns that it isn’t enough to run and hide or fight out of fear, but instead you must protect the things you care about—
After those two natural, powerful progressions are clearly worked for in the first two movies—
How to Train Your Dragon 3 comes along and says “‘No actually, sometimes all it takes is one madman whom you defeated with no loss of life to convince you that the things you care about should just crawl into a very pretty hiding hole, because you don’t feel like spending the rest of your life fighting for them.”
And I can say more. Below the break.

HTTYD 3 Rewrite
This is a full rewrite of THW that I’ve been working on for a few years now, featuring my Light Fury redesign. It’s still mostly a rough draft. There are a few things here and there that I’d like to work out. Maybe I’ll even turn it into a detailed story one day, but for now this is just an outline of how the main events play out. Feel free to give helpful advice and criticism.
Opening Scene
Plays out mostly the same as the movie, except the gang actually work together as a team instead of just fumbling through.
After the trappers are taken out and the dragons are freed, the riders start to leave with the dragons. Toothless pauses while still on the deck, sniffing the air. Something has caught his attention. He snaps out of it when he hears Hiccup calling for him. He takes one last look around before finding Hiccup and flying off.
The camera pans down below the deck, where we partially see the Light Fury in a cage.
Grimmel and the Warlords
Like the movie, the warlords mention that the dragons on Berk are protected by a Night Fury, which catches Grimmel’s attention.
During this scene Grimmel mentions that he has started slaughtering the Light Furies after killing off the Night Furies, but he suspects that the Light Furies have gone into hiding since he has had a difficult time finding them.
He approaches the Light Fury's cage. The Light Fury presses herself up against the far side of the cage as Grimmel gets closer, snarling at him through the muzzle.
Toothless Meets the Light Fury
At the beginning of the scene Hiccup is looking over his map while Toothless is laying beside him, watching in interest. When Astrid and Stormfly show up, Toothless and Stormfly start to play with each other.
Their play is interrupted when something suddenly catches Toothless’ attention. He sniffs around, then flies down from the cliff’s edge into the forest below. He follows the strange scent until he reaches a clearing, where he sees the Light Fury.
He cautiously approaches her. She wakes up from her drugged-induced state and notices Toothless. Here we see that she’s muzzled.
Startled, she jumps to her feet and starts growling at Toothless. A chain leading to a metal collar around her neck rattles as she jolts up.
Toothless jumps back in surprise. The Light Fury notices the muzzle and paws at it in frustration. She starts pacing back and forth, keeping her eyes locked onto Toothless.
After a few moments of coaxing from Toothless, the Light Fury finally allows him to free her.
It's here that they gaze into each other's eyes, intrigued by one another. The moment is cut short when she notices Hiccup and Astrid. With a snarl, she fires a plasma blast into the trees. When she sees Hiccup and Astrid peer out from behind their cover, she fires a second blast.
Toothless roars at her and flares out his wings, putting himself between her and the riders so she can't fire another blast.
Overwhelmed, the Light Fury flies away.
The Following Day
The next day Hiccup is excited and fascinated at the idea of finding another Fury species. He describes her appearance to Fishlegs eagerly as he prepares a bowl of fish for Toothless.
Hiccup calls Toothless over for breakfast, but Toothless doesn’t move. We see him staring longingly at the sky, clearly distracted. He doesn’t give any sign that he heard Hiccup at all.
Toothless’ attention is drawn to two Nadders courting each other. He watches them thoughtfully.
Hiccup mentions going back to see if they can find the Light Fury and Toothless immediately perks up.
Hiccup and Toothless go back to where the Light Fury was the previous night. Toothless sniffs around the clearing while Hiccup examines where the Light Fury was chained. Here he finds a dart that was used to keep her drugged.
There is no dragon trap set.
Hiccup Meets Grimmel
Not many changes for this scene, but the damage done by Grimmel is a lot more significant. It’s not just Hiccup’s house that was attacked, a large portion of the village was burned down or damaged. Some people were even injured in the attack.
Fishlegs also isn’t disguised as Toothless. Toothless just simply isn’t there.
New Berk
Like the movie, we see Hiccup and everyone leaving Berk, but instead of leaving to find the Hidden World, they’re leaving so they can lie low and hide from Grimmel for the time being. It cuts back and forth between the Berkians flying with their dragons and Grimmel talking to the warlords. The Light Fury does not throw Hiccup off of Toothless during this scene.
The camera pans back from the large flock, where we see the Light Fury trailing them from behind.
First Date
Similar to the movie, Toothless wakes up when he senses the Light Fury nearby. He goes outside to meet her, where she then beckons for him to follow her.
Toothless glances back at Hiccup’s tent, hesitant to leave, but ultimately he decides to go with her.
The Light Fury lands on the beach and looks over to Toothless. Like the movie, he slips and stumbles out onto the beach. Once he recovers, the Light Fury takes to the air and urges him to come with her. Toothless roars to her in desperation, pacing back and forth along the shore. Her gaze follows his tail and she finally notices his missing tail fin. She lands on the beach and Toothless is thrilled, bounding around happily. The Light Fury slowly circles around him to the end of his tail, sniffing at where his missing tail fin should be.
The two continue bonding on the beach. Hiccup eventually catches up and watches from afar.
Note: The Light Fury does not try to court Toothless here.
The Light Fury tries to get Toothless to play. Toothless returns her gesture, and the two chase each other around the beach.
Toothless notices a branch on the ground and snatches it up in his jaws. He draws the Light Fury in the sand. She’s confused by the gesture, but amused. She carefully steps around the drawing and approaches Toothless, who offers her a gummy smile. She attempts to mimic him.
While she's smiling at him she glances up and notices Hiccup. Her ears pin back, and her teeth reappear as she starts to growl. There’s a low hiss as she charges up a plasma blast. Toothless roars at her in panic, and she stops, looking at him and then back at Hiccup before she turns and runs. She takes to the air, and Toothless tries to fly after her, only to crash into the water. Unlike the movie, he doesn't glare at his tail.
Toothless' New Tail
We find out that Hiccup has started calling the Light Fury Soundbreak.
Hiccup calls Toothless over and hooks up the new auto tail fin.
Toothless examines his new prosthetic, opening and closing his tail fins to test it out. He shakes his head with a snort of disapproval. He looks at Hiccup with uncertainty, letting out a confused croon.
Hiccup reassures Toothless that it's okay. It will just be until he brings Soundbreak back.
Toothless nuzzles Hiccup before turning to take off. He glances back at Hiccup one last time, then takes to the sky.
Second Date
The scene plays out the same as the deleted scene. The only difference is that she doesn't pretend to be uninterested in the beginning. Instead she invites Toothless to go flying with her after she sniffs his fake tail fin.
Unknowing to Toothless, Soundbreak is testing him. Furies test the strength and endurance of potential mates to make sure they are strong and healthy. Soundbreak is making sure that Toothless can keep up with her and that his prosthetic tail fin isn’t a hindrance to him, though Toothless thinks it’s all a game.
Toothless doesn’t use the lightning to cloak. That ability is completely removed.
The Hidden World
Soundbreak brings Toothless to a large clearing, where both Night Furies and Light Furies are waiting. After realizing they were being hunted, the Night Furies and Light Furies went into hiding.
Soundbreak introduces Toothless to the other Furies, who sniff at him curiously. A loud, bellowing roar suddenly rings out. The other Furies back away as a Titan Wing Night Fury approaches. This dragon is covered in scars, his wings and tail fins tattered from age. This is the alpha of the Fury flock that lives in the Hidden World. His piercing yellow eyes look over Toothless, examining him closely. After a few moments the alpha accepts Toothless.
Toothless and Soundbreak perform a courting dance, with Toothless following her lead. They trot around each other in a circle, wings up and tails swishing. Once the dance is complete and they have accepted each other as mates, the other Furies roar in celebration.
Like the movie, Hiccup tells Astrid that they should leave when he sees how happy Toothless is. They are discovered by a Rhumblehorn just as they’re about to leave.
While Toothless is in the clearing he glances back at his tail, missing Hiccup. A second later the Rhumblehorn gives the warning call.
Toothless saves Hiccup and Astrid. Unlike the movie, Toothless doesn't look annoyed having to do so.
Toothless and Soundbreak Get Captured
Similar to the movie, Hiccup tells Toothless that he should stay in the Hidden World, believing that he’ll be happier with his own kind. The moment is interrupted when Toothless notices Soundbreak.
He urges her to meet Hiccup. Although apprehensive, she still follows Toothless.
Soundbreak senses that something is wrong and warns Toothless before taking to the sky. A dart whizzes through the air and hits her in the neck, sending her crashing down.
Toothless desperately runs to her. When he sees Grimmel he starts charging a plasma blast. Grimmel shoots Toothless in the neck with a dart. Toothless staggers, managing to fire a blast that misses Grimmel before he collapses.
Grimmel notices Hiccup running down the hill. He whistles a command to his Deathgrippers and points to Hiccup. As Hiccup reaches Grimmel the Deathgrippers swarm him, one of them pinning him to the ground. Hiccup can do nothing but watch as both Toothless and Soundbreak are hooked up to the airship.
When Toothless wakes up Grimmel threatens Hiccup and uses him as leverage instead of the Light Fury. Grimmel orders Toothless to stand down and command the flock to follow him, otherwise Hiccup will die. Toothless has no choice but to obey.
The Final Battle
Hiccup gets rescued by the other riders. Once Hiccup is safe, Toothless orders the other dragons to fight back.
Grimmel drugs Toothless and rides him instead of the Light Fury. He plans on flying Toothless somewhere else so he can kill him and finish what he has started. Grimmel believes that Hiccup can’t stop him without his dragon.
Hiccup has no choice but to ask Soundbreak for help. She allows him to ride her, wanting to save Toothless just as much as he does.
They catch up to them and knock Grimmel off of Toothless, who then grabs onto Hiccup before he falls. In a last ditch effort, Grimmel shoots Toothless with a tranquilizer dart.
As Toothless plummets towards the ocean, Hiccup tells Soundbreak to save him. He lets go of her so she can catch Toothless.
Soundbreak comes back for Hiccup after saving Toothless. After catching him, she gives Hiccup the same gummy smile that Toothless showed her earlier.
Epilogue
The dragons are able to come and go between New Berk and the Hidden World as they please. Toothless lives on an island close to New Berk with his mate, but he visits Hiccup often.
Together, Hiccup and Toothless continue to fight for a world where humans and dragons can live in peace and the dragons won’t have to stay in hiding.
Additional Notes
Snotlout hitting on Valka is completely cut out.
Toothless is the alpha of the dragons on Berk, not the king of all dragons.
There is no alpha of the Hidden World. Individual packs have their own individual alpha.
While the movie pushes the idea of forcing the dragons into the Hidden World to keep them safe from humans, my AU is the opposite. The goal is to fight for a world where dragons won’t have to stay hidden and instead can live peacefully on the surface without the fear of being hunted. The reason the Berkians decide to stay on New Berk even after Grimmel is defeated is so they can protect the Hidden World and also so the dragons can protect them. It’s a mutual relationship.
Grimmel’s Deathgrippers aren’t killed. After the final battle the Deathgrippers are more neutral, not knowing what to do without their master. Hiccup and the others remove the Deathgrippers’ harnesses. Once the venom wears off and the dragons are back to normal, they fly away, finally free of Grimmel’s control.

The vision I have for my The Hidden World rewrite includes bunch of character redesigns - some have minor changes and some are completly reworked. Anyways, one idea for Hiccup and Valka's casual outfits is for them to split Stoick's fur cape. Hiccup wears his half on his right shoulder, while Valka has hers maybe over her waist? I'm not completly certain, though I do know I want it anywhere other than her shoulders. Them not matching would serve as a slight hint to Valka trying to readjust to her old life, but still not being able to really have a strong bond to her son and tribe.
How would we feel about this chat

Animation draft for a small AU. Actually it's a pretty common AU(runaway). But this one is a bit different in the fact that that our favorite night fury and his human meet a female along the way. This is still a WIP so the dragons look a bit....strange

oh OH I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ON THIS
yepyepyep (and also I love the second movie but uhh...they did something very similar with that too)
Whenever I get around to properly writing my thw rewrite fic, I'm addressing this.
Putting in Bayana from the comics, his daughter (an OC), and potentially another merchant character of similar appearance/background to Johann (something like Miriam the Merchant because alliteration), as well as having other characters of colour who are either protagonists or more complex/humanized antagonists.
I'm still genuinely bummed out about Johann's evil reveal. I think the show had enough twists and turns at that point and I also just really REALLY liked Johann as a character before the evil arc.
Wow, I sure do love being a black, jewish fan of a TV series that's only un-reedeemed villains are a greedy, hook-nosed merchant that travels the world and a foreign black man.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that, other than a missing eye and perhaps some damaged hearing(?), Brightheart has no lasting affects from her injuries?
She still has the SCARS, yes, but they don’t affect her in any permanent way, even if they are rather big.
I think Brightheart should have had brain damage
Her face and head were already heavily scarred. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that it also harmed her brain.
As for how she manages to SURVIVE that type of damage, I imagine that Cloudtail would help take her to Twolegs, which would tie in his history with them and could have extra angst potential as Cinderpelt feels guilty for not being able to heal her herself.
Though I took 1 class of neuro, it didn’t include a whole lot of injury facts, so this all comes from google searches. But some ideas:
—personality changes
—memory problems
—weakened ability to reason, judge, and make decisions
—weakened ability to consider consequences
—involuntary muscle movements
—lowered social understanding
—trouble with expressions and emotion
she most likely wouldn’t have ALL, these are just choose your pick ideas.
What should also be shown is her struggles with this aspect as well as her injuries and trauma and would realistically show how she learns to deal with it.
….but I’d we’re honest, the Erins would botch that massively

Playing my current Rook as the brother of my inquisitor ( to eventually do a DAV rewrite ), picking 'angry' options, and instantly hearing my inquisitor, tired and angry during trespasser like ouughhhh....do they know. Do they know they walk the same path hand in hand. Do they know they've made the same decisions, suffered the same, both saving the world at cost of themselves

my take on last reblog is that the kihetai also don’t know that takasugi isn’t the protagonist of gintama so the fridge horror button doesn’t activate. meanwhile takasugi knows in a subconscious (and increasingly conscious) level that gintoki knows that takasugi isn’t the protagonist of gintama so most of their interactions are frozen in that horror movie moment when you realise that a normal looking and behaving character you’ve been interacting with for the past half hour of the movie is actually a ghost and/or impostor (same in this case,) and the ghost realises that you’ve realised and a very slow, very cruel smile starts appearing on its face. and that’s the moment takasugi is stuck in whenever he sees gintoki or katsura

bear with me if ive made this exact post before, but i feel like instead of the httyd 2 and 3 we have now, the major plot points of httyd 2 could have been split into two movies
valka was originally going to be the main antagonist of httyd 2 and i think they should have stuck with this. it would have been really cool to see an anti-human/pro-dragon villain, especially because i think she would provide a lot of temptation for hiccup to go rogue like she did. i would like to see her have a redemption arc and reconciliation with hiccup and stoick...but only after a full movie
stoick's death might still be in the second movie, but maybe closer to the end -- but it could also be partway through the third movie (although i think stoick dying in the second movie and hiccup dealing with grief in the third movie would be really good)
i think drago would be much more impressive if he's referenced and hinted at in the second movie but only fully revealed in the third movie -- which could play out pretty much the same way movie 2 did but with more time between the major plot points so that they dont feel as rushed
i think the end of the second movie is a much more thematically satisfying ending to the franchise -- if it just had more room to breathe, the story would be so much stronger
hhhh and now ive given myself ideas for yet another rewrite project
well, let's put this one in the vault

Hiccup Vs Grimmel - Parallel Arcs
As mentioned in the previous post, I came up with parallel arcs for Hiccup and Grimmel, since they’re supposed to be foils. Each is split into three parts.
Part One
We already know how the first movie goes, of course. Grimmel also tries to fit in with his peers by killing dragons, but unlike Hiccup he uses poisons and other ‘sneaky’ methods rather than building inventions. Both face a Test of Character, namely the choice between killing or sparing a Night Fury. Hiccup passes this Test, and Grimmel fails it, yet both of them gain external approval.
Part Two
Hiccup wants to explore, but Grimmel wanted to be famous. To be known as the greatest dragon hunter ever. Unlike Hiccup, who fails to listen about Drago and faces dire consequences, Grimmel took the advice of his mentors and set his sights on being an expert hunter of rare dragons, especially Night Furies.
Part Three
In our improved THW, Hiccup’s internal conflict (duty vs desire) from the 2nd movie has not yet been resolved. Grimmel, meanwhile, wants to get rid of Toothless to cement his reputation as the worlds greatest hunter. He uses the LF (or a female NF, if you prefer) to lure Toothless away from Berk and Hiccup.
He captures and poisons Toothless, and is nearly killed by Hiccup in turn. At the last minute, Hiccup chooses to comfort his dying dragon rather than get revenge. Whilst grieving his best friend, he doesn’t notice Grimmel about to kill him… only for Toothless to leap up and kill the Night Fury hunter to defend him.
It turns out that the LF/NF persuaded Toothless to try a fungi (from the HW perhaps) that’s basically the dragon equivalent of activated charcoal. It had entered his bloodstream and bonded to the toxins in Grimmels’ poison, making him immune. Still, the scare of thinking his best friend had died pushes Hiccup to the revelation in the previous post, and he leaves Berk in Astrid’s hands.
Essentially, the idea is that whilst they both start off craving external validation, Hiccup learns to have internal validation whereas Grimmel doesn’t.

A scene out of my httyd rewrite:) yes Krogan has a night fury. Her name is Sigrùn
So. Anyways, this rewrite completely redoes most of season five and six of rtte and has to go through httyd 2 as well… it isn’t just a rewrite of thw, which is getting an overhaul COMPLETELY. it is not going to be anywhere near the same plot as the original. Without giving too many details, the entire rewrite is going to be split up into several parts, and is told completely from Krogan’s pov.
Sigrùn pops up later towards the end of season six for the first time though,

Wow! Just cracked into the 1k club. Absolutely delighted with the number of positive comments, kudos, bookmarks, etc. in response to this fic. 😊 I'd been meaning to write this for several months but kept telling myself not to bother because no one would care, or the fandom had moved on, or whatever. But then I realized it didn't matter--I wanted to give Hiccup and Toothless a good, happy ending, and at the end of the day, that's all the justification I needed to start drafting. You want to see this story in the world? Well, you can make it happen. Here we are. (I will hopefully be posting chapter previews with artwork once everything gets squared away. Very excited for that.) Link to fic in case this somehow gets notes and people want to check it out.
Summary:
One year after Hiccup has become Chief of Berk, he finds himself confronted by both the past and the future. Even as his practice of dragon taming spreads throughout the Barbaric Archipelago, old enemies have returned from across the sea to stand in the way. Back at home, Hiccup and Toothless grapple with their destinies as leaders and the singular question: how far will they go to see peace in their lives?

I can also imagine toothless going to the night fury island and getting beat up badly. Like Ash's Charizard in the Charizard Valley anime episode .
i don’t know a thing about pokémon but yeah lmao.
i’m assuming you’re talking about my hidden world rewrite? the actual fic is still in progress but that was kinda my thought.
!! this next part might be a bit of a spoiler !!
in my au the hidden world is just the real isle of night. on this island there’s a particular night fury (the alpha of this pack) that doesn’t bow down to toothless, trying to pick fights and such.
so yeah essentially that ^
