I'm going to oversimplify here, because I'm tired and I don't give a shit.
But I remember writing fanfic back when FF.net started, and I remember consuming every scrap of legalese regarding copyrights and trademarks, and anything else even slightly related.
Not just because I wanted to write fanfic but also because I wanted to write some OG stuff and I wanted to know what my legal rights were. I was fuckin' nobody and had no money for a lawyer.
Long story short because I don't want to get all nitpicky - if fan fiction was truly illegal Ao3 wouldn't have lasted a year without being buried in litigation.
Disney alone would've buried them.
Every author quoted as saying it's illegal is a fucking numpty and a troglodyte.
Authors Convinced Fanfic is Illegal/Requires Permission
Terry Goodkind: “Copyright law dictates that in order for me to protect my copyright, when I find such things, I must go out and hire lawyers to threaten these people to make them stop, and to sue them if they don’t.”
John Scalzi: “Let's remember one fundamental thing about fanfic: Almost all of it is entirely illegal to begin with. It's the wild and wanton misappropriation of copyrighted material”
Diana Gabaldon: “OK, my position on fan-fic is pretty clear: I think it’s immoral, I know it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.”
Robin Hobb: “Fan fiction is like any other form of identity theft. It injures the name of the party whose identity is stolen.”
Anne Rice: “I do not allow fan fiction. The characters are copyrighted. It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. I advise my readers to write your own original stories with your own characters. It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes.”
Anne McCaffrey: “there can be no adventure/stories set on Pern at all!!!!! That's infringing on my copyright and can bear heavy penalties…indiscriminate usage of our characters, worlds, and concepts on a 'public' media like electronic mail constitute copyright infringement AND, which many fans disregard, is ACTIONABLE!”
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro: “No. Absolutely not. It is also against federal law.”
Lynn Flewelling: “Whether you are writing about Seregil or Fox Mulder or Sherlock Holmes, if you do not have legal permission from the author, their estate, or publisher, then you are violating US copyright law. It is creative piracy. Doesn't matter how many disclaimers you put on, or if you're being paid. It. Is. Illegal.”
Someone Else, elaborated in the notes
#There's so much nuance to the laws too#you can't trademark dark elf#because dark and elf are common words#you can trademark DROW#and that's why you don't see it used much outside of the company that has the trademark#Even house of mouse couldn't trademark mickey and mouse#unless it's both words associated with the distinct shape and character of that particular mouse#they have no legal legs.#Most people Annie Piss Rices went after just didn't have enough money to win against her#now you start talking money changing hands#then it gets tricky#but there's still the private club rule#so there's ways around that too#g'night

In one of the 647968 posts going "What You Like Says Nothing About You" (broadly agree) the first comment in the reply section was, "well I'm never going to apologize for being a Swiftie and a Reylo and Destiel shipper and Snape fan and loving ACOTAR and LOTR and Hamilton and B99" and I'm like, actually being this much of a pathological white liberal makes you the exception to this rule 😭😭
#do i consistently hyperfixate on racist white liberal trash? yes#am i proud of it? absolutely not#i have friends who also hyperfixate on toxic white bullshit but in the 'i hate this so much im gonna fix it' way#you don't have to live in a constant state of apologia you just have to understand that these things are criticised on legitimate grounds#and do some self examination on why you're so constantly attracted to this kind of media and how you can counterbalance it#idk if anyone told me one of my hyperfixations were gross I'd be like ''IKR?? i hate it too!''#what i have a problem with is people saying ''if you know something is problematic you should stop consuming it''#that is ableist and counter productive#''please consume in ways that don't turn a profit for the creator'' ''maybe try this alternative media as well'' <- aces 💯💯#there's so much nuance that's lost in this 'pro' vs 'anti' bs like criticism is the same as censorship#and harrassment is the same as criticism#ethics vs morals vs laws#anyway acting like being criticised for consuming the most toxic white shit in creation makes you oppressed#is a level of racism i can't bother unpacking#fandom racism#hp antis get off this post. the tags are about you people too#anti swifties#anti reylo#anti acotar#anti spn#anti hamilton#anti b99#fandom wank#knee of huss#white liberals#white women#white queers#white people

Insanely funny to me how everyone who works at Princeton Plainsboro acts like House has held them at gun point at made them do the awful things they do. Like sure, he's pushed them towards being worse, he definitely brings out the worst in people, but they do have the option of saying no. Half the time, all he can really do is be more of an asshole. None of them want to admit that he just gives them an excuse to be awful, because then they'd just be admitting that all of them suck.
#house md#literally they're all just awful people. which. people are nuanced and good and evil are too simple to define people blah blah blah#but they are all so! bad!#they just get to conveniently blame all of it on House.#Maybe the fellows have the most justification in this because he's their boss.#but they are also crazy! so.#anyone else would've quit i swear.#all other hospitals would be like oh you quit.. (or were fired)... why? OH you worked for Dr. house? i hate that dude totally understandable#but like Cuddy and Wilson? they have no excuse! House just makes them look better so they seem normal and then they enable him and you#realize thag actually all 3 of them need help and none of them should hold positions of power.#(cuddy is the best of them but she's not totally great)#Wilson yells at House and gets upset when#House exhibits normal behavior of his#and then turns around and continues to enable him#Cuddy yells at House and acts like she keeps him on for the hospital#and then also enables him and breaks laws for him and does not stop his insanity! when she does she proceeds to cave!#and then they all turn to House and tell him he's an awful person who is definitely lying about his chronic pain from his disability and#he ruins everyone's life with his assholery and addiction#as if they don't put themselves there day after day#like damn all of y'all suck. House may bring out the worst in them but it doesn't even take that much#(i firmly believe the fellows would just be like that. House is not soley responsible for their behavior)#they'd all be fired from a better hospital though! Cuddy is the reason for all this idc how good House is. she couldve and shouldve#fired him.#anyways.#ik y'all like to talk about how Wilson looks like Mr. nice guy next to House to hide his own issues#but that's true of alllll of them#its great none of them should ever work in a hospital.

I hope you people seeing my posts about copyright don't assume I'm a corpo shill. I'm not. I don't give a single shit about corpos. fuck corpos. I wouldn't shed a single tear over Disney burning down. the point I'm making is that it's not unreasonable of artists to want to protect their work and make money off of it for as long as they're alive in a capitalist society. I want people to understand where some artists are coming from when they want to enforce copyright over their work. why they want to make money off of it. why they think abolishing copyright and IP law wouldn't be beneficial for them, and how abolishing or enforcing copyright law is beneficial for corporations and detrimental for smaller creators either way!
if you want to abolish copyright and IP law, you're gonna have to abolish captialism to begin with
#i'd touch upon piracy and lost media and media locked behind in a vault but it's just too much#but i think it's wack that copyright extends to stuff like that#people shouldn't be jailed for pirating a 15+ year old video games or movies that hasn't seen a rerelease for years#and whose most legal method to access is also the most impractical or expensive bc LMFAO scalpers#hazy rambles#god this shit is just so fucking complicated it's too much for a single person to tackle#please please please i'm begging you#go into this understanding there are shitloads of shades of gray#it's never going to be as simple as enforcing or abolishing copyright law#please go into this with a NUANCED MINDSET#if any of you flame me it's an immediate block without warning

man i think the amon plotline is just kind of weak in terms of world building
#lok#i've seen posts discussing this with more nuance#but it's still so soon after the hundred year war#republic city is new too. only a generation old. majority of its population are either 1st or 2nd generation immigrants#or earth kingdom citizens or fire nation colonists who built what became the city during the war#and the way that bending is distributed among the population of every nation is entire random. it's an odd choice to mark it as a dividing#a dividing line. because every bender has family that are nonbenders and vice versa#and! add to that that unless you are trained just being born a bender isn't an intrinsic leverage over a nonbender. untrained benders#and benders without a lot of power exist. able to do party tricks and not much more#it likens to. people who's bodies are more naturally built to handle manual labour. it's just genetics and random luck#of course there could be interesting ways to tackle bender and nonbender dynamics especially with the religious significance of bending#and in mixed cultures how bending being passed on can be a surrfire way you are truly seen as carrying on that side of your culture#and it could be interesting seeing the culture shift as republic city is the first place to have such a wide mix of different cultures#in things like food and festivals#but a nonbender revolution (especially led by a bender like amon) is odd. like what is the goal of the revolution#bending and nonbending people can't be seperated in any meaningful way. and there are already laws and rules#prohibiting destructive bending use just as there are regular destruction#it's just. the revolution seeks to remove bending from the world. that's obviously a wild thing to say with cultures built around and with#bending as a part of them. add that to the fact that benders can be born from non-bending families and it just falls apart.

I've been slowly chipping at expanding my oni playlist after doing a mini song purge of songs that I added day one that I don't feel fit anymore, and it's just been me finding more and more songs from the spiraling upwards playlist that I could oh so easily add and having to stop myself from taking more than I already have from my poor kitty cats
#rat rambles#oni posting#Ive already taken my september from my girl bristlestar I cant start taking main characters songs too 😔#well ok they kind of already did but they technically got it first so it doesnt rly count#plus rabbit au olivia already has like 5 songs out of 20 she doesnt need more rn#now shes Going to get more but thats just because I have favorites and she and raccoon au olivia are too easy to find songs for#I do need to find more rat universe (aka canon) songs since a lot of them got cut in my recent playlist purge#rat uni jackie and olivia have the Same amount of songs thats illegal olivia needs to have five times the number of songs its law#the main problem is that Im much more picky with canon olivia given how strongly I feel abt her character#its the nuances and the me having bad takes that makes things tricky#also the fact that shes a wet towel of a woman and as such a lot of songs that can fit her fit one of the other two better

I don't understand the thinking behind wanting Wyll to be more of a hardline monster hunter traditional lawful good coded guy. One of the very best things about him is how he breaks that stereotype - because he IS for goodness and justice and battling evil where'er it lurks! But it's the kind of Good that knows Hurt People Hurt People and not every monster has to remain so. He's a man of nuance who always, always, always gives "monsters" the benefit of the doubt so long as they're not actively threatening innocent people.
[I'd have taken her head if she spoke to me like that.]
Wyll: I try to avoid summary execution when a sideways glance will suffice.
Astarion fucking bites him - Wyll, the Blade of Frontiers!! a renowned monster hunter!! a man who, by his own admission, has slain vampire spawn before!!!!! - and what does he do? Calls him insolent but charming, says he got the best sleep he's had in ages, compliments his hair and tells him to keep his fangs out of innocent people (notably he does not actually tell Astarion to keep his fangs out of his neck.... unlike everyone else in the party).
He travels alongside, has a lot of respect for and great camaraderie with Lae'zel (militaristic space pirate whom everyone on the Material Plane shits bricks upon seeing) and Shadowheart (ms. when i grow up i wanna be a dark justiciar in a nihilistic shadow cult. maybe do a blood sacrifice idk) and Karlach who he was sent to kill but didn't (unless you did the thing. I did Not) because he decides her life is more important than the inevitable torment he'll face for disobeying Mizora.
He's sooo, SOOOO much more interesting this way than as a Lawful Stupid "why aren't we killing these undead/abominations/astral invaders already alfjakghjkk >:(" hardline smitey ur-paladin fucker whose character arc is learning that oooh monsters are people too oh wowow because he already knows that!!! He already knows!!!! His character arc isn't about acknowleding that monsters have feelings too, it's acknowledging that he has feelings too and is worthy of the same consideration and benefit of the doubt he extends to everyone around him!!!!!!!

Feeling so strongly about the astounding confidence and lack of knowledge about the political and religious situation in 15th century France on that Joan of Arc post
#and the occasional lack of nuance when it comes to queer history#but mostly the ignorance of the fact that there was no such fucking thing as 'secular english forces' in the 100 year war#and there were not protestants#and literally everything else#oh it wasnt the catholics because her trial actually broke ecclesiastical laws of the time#yeah that was kind of a big feature of medieval catholicism have you heard of the reformation and counter reformation??#people at the time were upset about that too and it very much was coming from the catholic church#like yeah it wasnt the central chirch that killed her but it was very much members of the catholic church doing it in the name of catholics#and yes the religious angle was covering political motives#but those political motives are also inextricably linked to religious motives#it was a political and religious war#motivated by different combinations of the two for each individual person and body#and using the religious to justify the political and vice versa#the church were the rulers and the rulers were the church#sorry sometimes you people are so dumb and so profoundly wrong with such astounding confidence

Perhaps my biggest issue with Zootopia was that despite focusing on issues of racism and prejudice, I always felt like it only did so in a superficial and barebones way. And this issue became harder to ignore after watching Nimona.
The racism within the world of Zootopia is less of a formidable obstacle and more just a mere hurdle on the track that just quickly jumped over. The biggest example of this problem is with the film's "main antagonist," Mayor Bellwether. Aside from being a crappy twist villain, we never see the effects she has had while she was in power, effects such as policies, laws, or other systemic powers she could've wielded to malign and oppress the predators of Zootopia.
But the way Nimona tackles the subject of prejudice just completely puts Zootopia to shame. For Nimona (the character), the malice she experiences is not some mere bump in the road, it's a suffocating presence that surrounds her on every side, one that she has to endure on a constant basis. Whereas the supremacism in Zootopia was this mere stomachache that fades as soon as it appears, in Nimona, it's this all-consuming cancer that infects every corner of society from government to law enforcement, to goshdarn cereal ads. And not only that but this culture of supremacism is also accepted by almost everyone in said society, much of the time without them even asking themselves why they're accepting it.
Many have argued that you shouldn't go too hard on Zootopia's social commentary because "it's only a kid's movie," but after seeing Nimona tackle the same subject with far more depth and nuance, I can't help but ask: "what's Zootopia's excuse?"

Watching Reality TV With You (Various One Piece Characters x Reader)
Characters: Zoro, Sanji, Trafalgar Law, Luffy, Perona + Mihawk, Nami, Kizaru/Borsalino, Eustass Kidd
A/n: Sorry I’m a huge fan of Real Housewives so take these silly headcanons!!!
Note: GN reader, the relationships with the character(s) and reader can be seen as platonic/romantic depending on what you prefer :) Mihawk + Perona’s relationship to each other is also not stated just for your personal preference. These are all just very silly things, don’t take this too seriously since it’s crack!
Zoro
“The hell? Why are you watching this crap? It’s not even real!”
He just sighs and grumbles about how this is dumb the whoooooole time.
Tends to sharpen his swords or try and nap while it’s on.
Until lowkey he starts peeking a bit like ‘did she just say that?’
Suddenly has opinions on it and tries to deny he’s interested but his eyes are GLUED once they start arguing and the suspenseful music is playing.
“Well, if I was her, I think I’d just kick them. Or maybe cut their car in half.”
Sanji
Opposite of Zoro. The man is probably a bigger fan than you and most likely is reading the gossip online.
It’s your weekly night hangout where he brings snacks and cozy blankets for you two to sit and enjoy while watching.
Gasps audibly and loudly.
He’s both the best and worst to talk about this with because he respects all women and he forgives them for everything, so they all get passes from him.
“Yes she may have talked badly about [name] and stole [name]’s house and maybe crashed a car. But we all do that. We need to show forgiveness. She’s having a tough time- her dress came in the wrong color.”
Law
Like Zoro, he’s very disturbed by the very prospect of reality tv.
But he’ll try. Let it be known he’s trying.
He doesn’t get interested in it but he does try to follow along so he can discuss it with you.
Not gonna lie though he’s the guy who’s focusing on their plastic surgery or illnesses.
Will literally pause the show just to examine what they may/may not have done and if the surgeon botched it up.
Imma just manifest this, he’s prolly a Terry Dubrow stan.
“Who’s your favorite Housewife so far?” “Terry.” “But… Terry isn’t-“ “It’s Terry.”
Unironically would drop a horrible quote from whichever show you’ve been watching and he’d say it so seriously that everyone’s jaw will drop and it takes him a sec for him to realize what he said.
Luffy
Imma keep this short for you- he ain’t looking.
He ain’t caring.
No thoughts.
He only cares when there’s a party and food is being served.
“Woooooah! Look at all that food!!!”
Doesn’t even recognize who is who and will just mindlessly wait for food to come on screen.
Perona + Mihawk
I’m putting this as a two for one they’re my everything <3
You and Perona are the ones who watch it lots. Perona does complain about how much they argue but she loooooves looking at the houses and clothes of the women. Makes comments about wanting to fly first class or visit the beautiful places they go to.
Mihawk is reading.
Perona is biased as hell and only defends the people that are wearing cute clothes. Otherwise? Shit list.
“Ugh! What is that dress?! It’s so hideous!” “Is that all you’re focusing on?” “I agree with (Y/n), Perona, she just had gotten into some relationship troubles with [name], so I think [name] is wrong.”
You and Perona are gasping and shocked that Mihawk 1) talked and 2) had an opinion on this???
Turns out the man had been listening the whole time (he’s quite the multitasker).
If Perona is the most biased viewer, Mihawk tries to remain objective and impartial. He's always listing out the nuances of a conversation.
“I think [name] is just jealous.” “Well, if we remember in season 4, episode 14-“
He’s a smart ass sometimes, but it’s okay, he’s our smart ass.
Perona is always enthusiastic about marathoning the shows again and watching it. She tends to do dress up requirements for watching it.
Nami
I’d hesitate to call Nami a “fan” of reality shows.
She’s aware of them, yes. Does she particularly care for it? Nah, not really.
They’re more background noise and eye candy for her.
She just likes putting them on and glancing every once in a while to gaze at the beautiful houses and trips.
“Oh that’s so expensive… imagine what you could do with all that!”
Sometimes has a fun game for herself to estimate the cost of an outfit, accessory, or house. It’s scary how accurate and detailed she can get with it.
Tends to mostly focus on fashion and get new ideas to steal- I mean, incorporate.
Doesn’t have strong opinions on the cast, but she isn’t too crazy about the louder members.
Kizaru/Borsalino
He’s heard of it, he thinks.
And, well, since you’re so into them, he’ll give it a watch.
“Oh my, these ladies are incredibly wealthy and beautiful.”
He’s not even ogling them he’s just amazed at the way they dress, behave, and/or decorate their spaces. It’s almost like being starstruck???
The guy who will pause the tv at certain scenes to point at random decorations or outfits and be like “darling, would you like that?”
He does get sad when they start to fight.
“Aw… I was just liking the party… why are they arguing now?”
His favorite cast member is your favorite one <3 he’s just a cheerleader like that, dear.
He could listen to you talk about it for hours if you wanted, and he’d be amazed by your knowledge.
“You know, if you’d like for me to have you be on a show like this, I could probably pull some strings!”
Kidd
1000000x worse than Zoro
I cannot recommend putting it on in front of him.
“The hell is this shit?! Turn it off!”
You refuse and now he’s stuck watching grown women argue over dumb things (in his mind).
Complains the ENTIIIIRRRRE time. Nonstop commenting and complaining.
Okay but he’s hooked after a bit, the drama is just too good.
But now he’s WORSE cuz he’s got OPINIONS and THEYRE ALL SHITTY!
This man is an instigator. I swear to god he’s just saying shit just to rile you up and be contrarian.
He's stanning the biggest menaces on the show.
You two will probably get into (very silly) arguments about some of the situations and people.
And unlike say, Sanji, who tries to defend a person, Eustass will just say you’re wrong and then add something unhinged to it.
“Naw you just don’t get it. If I was her, personally, I think I’d just burn their mansion down and then slash their tires.”

OKAY OKAYYYYY OKAY like i understand why people are bullying louis right now. it’s not a great look to dick down the guy who just now threatened to murder you and your daughter. but taken from louis’ perspective? without our foreknowledge of the plot? for all he knows he’s just gained an important and powerful ally.
like???? before armand spares louis, he does the whole “why are the powerful so weak” speech with the obvious implication that he doesn’t want to enact the Great Laws on louis specifically. and then he… doesn’t. And then, and this is crucial, opens up to louis about ALSO having his heart broken by lestat. which puts him in a place of automatic solidarity with him. and then he kisses him! as assad said the post-show breakdown, armand had to choose between the coven and louis in that moment and he chose louis.
like as far as louis is concerned, he and claudia are safe. at the very least, sage from armand specifically.
and like. i am absolutely 100% certain armand will have something to do with claudia’s death but i kind of doubt that armand is just like. masterminding from the shadows all day everyday and is retroactively altering the ENTIRE NARRATIVE. that’s just so boring. he becomes a non-character at that point.
what i think is much more likely is what a lot of people have been theorizing about: santiago stages a coup because armand is a fucking hypocrite and makes armand pick between claudia or louis. and armand is going to pick louis. and that’s what armand is hiding from louis. not that he personally killed her in cold blood but that he killed her through inaction/indirect action.
i’m also super exited to see the resentment between claudia and armand ramp up from here. like HELLO CHOKESLAM WHAT THE FUCK???? get AWAY from her.
anyway i bet armand and claudia have some really adversarial interactions after this point and that’s part of what armand doesn’t want louis to see in claudia’s diaries. like the two of them are perfectly positioned to activate the other’s trauma’s/hangups because they’re BOTH afraid of being abandoned they BOTH know what it’s like to always be someone’s second choice and they both really want louis to pick the other.
on top of that, i’m sure armand’s scary ass is having his disney villain “if it weren’t for those meddling middle aged kids” moment about claudia at some point too.
like i doubt he could not prevent it” but i also think a little more nuance, a little more conflict, is much better than Bad Man does Bad Scary Thing because he’s craaaaaaaazyyyy.
this has become a rambling mess but the POINT IS. there’s a little more going on then louis just letting jeff the killer into his house out of sheer dickmatization. there’s layers.
#i shoukd probably think of a tag for all my iwtv word vomit#iwtv#iwtv spoilers#iwtv speculation#iwtv meta#iwtv s2#iwtv season 2#louis de pointe du lac#armand#armand iwtv#loumand#claudia iwtv#claudia de pointe du lac#interview with the vampire

support needs… expanded! (part 1)
[pt: support needs… expanded! (part 1)]
low/medium/high support needs (& everything in between) get more awareness n talk about here, which great! you may able now remember support needs as amount of support someone need for basic & instrumental activities of daily living (bADLs & iADLs), n more n more of you able explain what bADLs iADLs are. if so, then, congrats, you graduated support needs 101! now, you need take next mandatory class… support needs 201 >:) where we talk about more concepts n expand on old concepts with more nuance.
.
adaptive functioning skills
[pt: adaptive functioning skills]
this very well known word in intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD) services circle, but think there things people with start-as-adult neurological & cognitive disabilities n people w physical disabilities can borrow too. this a thing talked here a few times briefly, but never know how explain it.
adaptive functioning skills are conceptual, social, & practical skills need for independent daily life. it includes bADLs & iADLs, but also bigger wider than that, n also include skills need for do these ADLs. some examples:
conceptual skills
reading/literacy & writing
understand numbers, money, time
self direction, plan, organize
social skills
listening & understanding others (communication)
talk to & communicate with others (communication)
recognize danger, avoid harm
ask for help
social responsibility, follow rules n laws
practical skills
personal care (bADLs & beyond)
caring for home (iADLs & beyond)
being in community
manage money
& so much more! sometimes skill belong in multiple category, move between category, different people group them differently, but this general idea.
each bullet point can (&often is) broken down to even smaller skills, from most basic skill many people don’t even consider it learned skill (but is! n many I/DD n otherwise disabled people struggle with), to more advanced ones. example:
under personal care > feeding (orally)
open mouth when fed
eat solid food
suck or chew food
feed self with spoon
feed self with fork
(now do those without spilling)
spread soft things like butter n jam with not-sharp knife
cut easy to cut food with knife (e.g. pancakes)
cut hard to cut food with knife (e.g meat)
under listening & understanding
looks at (familiar person) when hear their voice
looks when someone call own name
understand (e.g. at least 3) basic gestures (head nod yes, shake head no, reaching, waving, clapping, etc)
understand at least 10 words
look when other people point
point to (e.g) at least 3 object when asked
follow one step directions. then two related directions. if-then directions. then two unrelated directions. then three step directions. then directions for do something a lil later. then directions for something much much later. etc
pay attention to story for short amount time. pay attention to show for medium amount of time. pay attention to information talk for short amount of time. n understand it. etc
some examples of be in community skills
understand money used to buy thing, clock used to tell time
communicate with familiar people on phone/computer/etc - when other people place the call. n start by self
respect privacy, like use bathroom change clothes, not go through other people stuff
look both ways when cross road
understand symbols for danger, like 🚫, ⚠️, skull n crossbones for poison
follow cross road signs like walk/don’t walk
know how make call in emergency
use money buy small things. big things. use credit debit card. have bank account. have own credit debit card.
keep money n phone save when out
consider price n quality when buy things
travel independently to place been many times before. travel independently to new place.
buy grocery n household stuff when need. pay bill on time.
you see list start with easy, basic-of-the-basic skills. then get more complicated, next skill often depend on n build on previous skills. because it idea from I/DD services n professionals, list tend focus on development & developmental skills, & tend have cognitive focus. but, again, can see these be help for non-I/DD disabilities (& many I/DD people have comorbid physical & neurological disabilities to begin with!).
also because of I/DD focus, may see first few bullet points (or maybe most of the list) as easy, “well duh” skills you not think twice about, skills babies & toddlers learn that have nothing do with teens n adults. because this, you may see adaptive functioning as infantilizing or childish. but, they not infantilizing or childish at all—it reality that I/DD (& other disabilities), it affect babies n toddlers n children, developmentally delayed children who don’t have n struggling with n learning these skills. and, there plenty teens and adults (including older adults) with I/DD, cognitive disabilities, n other disabilities who do not have these skills.
—so, think it really helpful, even much needed, for disability allies & advocates & disabled people (if can) to read through more detail list of adaptive functioning skills. n while do that, remember, there people your age & older than you, who not able do these.
personally find this a lot more helpful than just bADLs & iADLs. because adaptive functioning more accurate include ALL skills need for daily life, from very small to more advanced. it more well rounded, n group in way make sense for own brain. (but that also make idea infinitely harder to explain for my brain for some reason)

The Beast Wants to Tempt the Little Rabbit (Matias vs Clavis)
Translations may not always capture the exact nuances or tone of the original text. Expect grammatical errors and inaccuracies. Not proofread.
Clavis: "Haha, found you. So this is where you work."
Emma: "Prince Clavis!?"
After completing my duty as a belle, I returned to my peaceful life, but then Clavis appeared out of nowhere, causing me to drop the book I was reading on the counter.
Clavis: "That reaction. You missed me that much, huh? Then feel free to leap into my arms."
Emma: "I'll pass. Anyway, who's that gentleman next to you?"
Standing right behind Clavis was a man I didn't recognize. Despite his rugged appearance and equally imposing presence as Clavis, he had an impeccable posture and charisma that naturally drew attention.
Matias: "Pardon me. I'm Matias Asbrink, a friend of Clavis. Nice to meet you."
Emma: "Nice to meet you. I'm Emma."
Matias: "Are you also a friend of Clavis?"
Emma: "Um, no, we're just acquaintances."
Clavis: "How can you say that? You and I have been through so much together."
Matias: "Is that so?"
Emma: "You're right. We experienced all sorts of things together. You convinced me to be your partner in crime for all your mischief-making and even dragged me all over the palace."
Matias: "I see."
Emma: "So, why are you here, Prince Clavis?"
Having endured countless misadventures thanks to Clavis during my time at the palace, I couldn't help but be cautious.
Clavis: "That's because I've appointed you as our tour guide!"
Emma: “Tour guide?”
(What's that supposed to mean?)
Clavis smiled and placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder.
Clavis: “You see, Matias here is the prince of Acroite, the land of snow and law.”
Emma: “Prince!?”
Clavis: “It’s only natural to entertain the honored guest, so I thought of organizing a Rhodolite tour.”
Clavis: “Emma, you’ve been living in this city since you were born.”
Clavis: “That means you know more about this place than I do.”
(Well, I might have a bit of confidence in that.)
Clavis: “Therefore, I’d like you to assist with the tour.”
Clavis: “And having a woman around like Matias would add to the charm, don’t you think?”
Matias: “She seems to be a bookstore clerk. Aren't we bothering her?”
(He seems surprisingly reasonable for someone who’s Clavis’s friend.)
I know firsthand that nothing good comes from being involved with Clavis, but if I refuse now, it might inconvenience Prince Matias.
(Yeah, there’s no way I can just ignore it.)
Emma: “Owner! Did you hear our conversation?”
The owner peeked out from the back of the shop.
Akatsuki: “No problem. Be careful out there.”
Emma: “Thank you very much.”
Clavis: "Haha, I knew you'd definitely help."
Matias: "I'm sorry if it feels like we're forcing you, but thank you, Miss Emma."
Emma: "No, it’s fine. I'll do my best to make you enjoy Rhodolite."
(I need to keep a close eye on Clavis to make sure he doesn't go off the rails.)
Most of the time, the words peace and safety escaped me when I was with Clavis.
Unfortunately, this time, too, it seemed to have already escaped me.
Emma: "Um, Prince Clavis."
Clavis: "What's up? Are you impressed by my thoroughness?"
Emma: "No, I was just wondering why there's a white horse here."
As we exited the bookstore, I saw a quiet and wise-looking white horse tethered nearby.
While it wouldn't be unusual for a means of transportation to be there, the fact that there was only one raised some questions.
(It doesn't look like they rode together.)
Matias: "It's a magnificent horse. Is it a warhorse?"
(Prince Matias seems surprised as well.)
Clavis: "Yes, he's Chevalier's partner. But today, he's your companion, Matias."
Matias: "What do you mean?"
Clavis: "You'll be riding this horse to get around from now on."
Matias: "And what about you and Miss Emma?"
Clavis: "We have important tasks to attend to."
Flashing his brightest smile, he signaled to Cyril, and he reluctantly brought over two baskets.
Upon seeing what was inside, I tilted my head in confusion.
Emma: "Rose petals?"
Clavis: "Yup, you'll be in charge of the rose petals with me."
Emma: "Prince Clavis, what the hell are you planning?"
Clavis: "I'm glad you asked."
With a lively expression, Clavis took out a red sash worn by princes during ceremonies.
Noticing the unusually placed sash before me, I couldn't help but groan.
Emma: "I understand."
Emma: "Prince Matias, let's run away."
Matias: "Are you suggesting that we elope?"
Emma: “Elope?”
(Why are his eyes so serious?)
Clavis: "Haha! Hold on a second, Emma. You seem to be misunderstanding something."
Emma: “I'm not misunderstanding anything. I've seen through all your plans.”
Emma: "You're going to put that sash that says 'today's star of the show' on Prince Matias and have him march through the streets on horseback, aren't you?"
Clavis: "My goodness."
Clavis: "I knew you were brilliant, but I never expected you to be this perceptive!"
Emma: "Let's run, Prince Matias!"
Matias: "And then, we'll find an eternal paradise where no one else can enter."
Emma: "Prince Matias?"
Matias: "Ah, sorry. I was lost in thought."
(Did I hear him say something weird just now, or am I imagining things?)
Clavis: "Matias, here, take this."
Emma: "Ah!"
We were unable to escape in time; Clavis had already handed him the sash.
Matias: “Rhodolite has an unusual way of sightseeing.”
Clavis: “You’re a special guest, so you need to be welcomed not only by me and Emma but by the town citizens as well.”
(Yeah, it’s over.)
Clavis: "People, behold! Make way for our distinguished guest!"
In the end, there was no way a girl like me could stop Clavis, so I reluctantly scattered the petals and followed along as Matias, riding on a white horse, moved forward.
Woman: "What is Prince Clavis up to this time?"
Man: "He's a distinguished guest, apparently. I'm not quite sure what's happening, but maybe we should just go along with it?"
Being used to Clavis' antics, the people of Rhodolite quickly adapted to the situation.
Every time Matias passed by, people applauded and cheered. Before we knew it, we had become the center of attention.
Matias: "This also requires a strong spirit."
Emma: "Prince Matias, if it's uncomfortable for you, I can stop..."
Matias: "No, it's fine. If this is Rhodolite's way of welcoming guests, then so be it."
Matias: "By the 62nd precept of the Asbrink family motto, let us proceed."
(What's with that motto? "Accept the kindness of others," or something like that?)
Making up his mind, Prince Matias waved to the cheering crowd and made the surroundings even livelier.
Woman: "He's quite charming, isn't he?"
Woman: "Yeah. But goodness, his overwhelming charisma is almost suffocating."
(It looks like Prince Matias is especially popular among women.)
(Well, I can understand why. He's so handsome and has tremendous sex appeal.)
Woman: "If only Prince Clavis would stay silent and just be a feast for the eyes."
Woman: "Yeah, he's handsome, but only on the surface."
(Clavis is getting quite the remarks.)
Clavis: "Hm."
Clavis: "This is rather unsatisfactory."

Hi, I just finished the AA trilogy with my bf and we fell in love with it! I found your blog the other day, and it sometimes feels like you're the only one giving correct takes on these characters' writing and the minutiae of everyone's inner worlds (or the fumbling of, see Godot).
I just got here, but, something that's been bothering me about the fandom's approach to the sequel trilogy is like... the imperialist undertones are glossed over, or swept under the rug. Researching "The Dark Age of the Law" and beyond puts a sour taste in my mouth. And with Khura'in the country vs Kurain the village? It all feels racist at best (the concept of the Divination Seance gives me squick). If you have the time, I'd love to hear your thoughts about AA5 and AA6 in relation to the world of AA as a whole. Thanks again for all of your thoughtful and nuanced takes on this series!
so glad to hear you guys liked the games!! thank you for enjoying my posts, i always appreciate it.
the tl;dr of it is that i do think they are genuinely bad enough additions to the franchise that they have signed mainline ace attorney's death warrant. picking out the dark age of the law stuff and aa5 and the imperialism in aa6 you've pretty much honed right in on my two biggest critiques
however i do want to say that although they're being bundled and sold as a 'second trilogy' that's not quite accurate either experientially when playing the games or from a development perspective. aa4 had scenario design/creative direction by series creator shu takumi, with the art director being kazuya nuri (responsible for character design for rise from the ashes in the series previous to this); aa5+6 was spearheaded by takeshi yamazaki, who had been with the franchise since its first game, with the slightly less tenured takuro fuse on art direction/character design. yamazaki and fuse are not without skill, but i think they're both significantly less skilled than takumi and nuri respectively and. it really shows.
pair that with the fact that aa5 and 6 fundamentally do not follow up on any of ace attorney 4's established characters or plots more than superficially, i don't think it's particularly useful to critique 4-5-6 as if they're a single body of work in the same way the trilogy is. apollo justice isn't a perfect* ace attorney game but it's a good one.
anyway i think buying into the 'dark age of the law' stuff in ace attorney 5 necessitates cheapening all of the events preceding it. the implication that 1. the law wasn't that bad before but it Is Now and 2. a single case was the tipping point for whether or not the entire legal system would be bad just ruins the times when ace attorney has managed to acknowledge corrupt systems as a massive source of problem for the everyman in the past
i think this screenshot from the dark age of the law wiki page says a lot:
For starters, that phoenix quote. He would not fucking say that. I don't think there has ever been a point during or leading up to phoenix's career where he thought the legal system had 'glory' he would then want to restore it to. you seem to get it so im not gonna harp on this too much on this but. jesus christ
then, then there's fact that even by stating the most basic details about the franchise's events undermines the whole premise. like okay notice that the corruption that happens during the trilogy/investigations spinoffs is coming from all of the actual agencies that represent law and order/the system: the prosecutors, the police, and the prosecutorial investigation committee. however in aa5 the thing they choose to paint as responsible for supposedly unprecedented levels of corruption in the legal system is defense attorneys resorting to more drastic means, and the general public; aka not the people who are responsible for upholding the legal system but the people who are victimized by it and in opposition to it.
i don't think this was an intentional choice as much as it's just sloppy, inconsiderate, and contrived writing.
aa6 is just flat out racist. 'imperalist undertones' is i would say the gentlest way you could phrase it. like. japanese characters going to a made up south asian country that needs to be taught how to govern itself to quash its internal rebellion is like. so high on the yikes meter.
making a bunch of fake 'ethnic sounding' nonsense names filled with apostrophes to make them into silly sounding english phrasing was a disastrously tone deaf thing for the localization to do. they're really unforgivable. the worst of it all is probably "Inga Karkhuul Haw'kohd Dis'nahm Bi'ahni Lawga Ormo Pohmpus Da'nit Ar'edi Iz Khura'in III" i'm unsure if the names are quite as offensive in the original japanese because i haven't looked too much into what they actually are and have a really limited knowledge of the language. but. this name in japanese is "インガ・カルクール・ククルーラ・ラルバン・ギジール・ホフダラン・マダラ・ヴィラ・ヤシマ・ジャクティエール・クライン3世" which is written in katakana. katakana is, in contrast to kanji and hiragana which are used for writing japanese, used to phoenetically transcribe foreign languages or to write loan words. so the foreign-ness of this character is being emphasized here in the original text as well.
the supposed cultural inferiority of the khurainese people is baked into the game at pretty much every level, down to the gags. khura'in has the 'plumed punisher' show, which is actively criticized by the characters in game for just being a cheap ripoff of the steel samurai. they don't even get to have their own tv.
i believe the reason the racism is pretty much glossed over a lot in the fandom is for several reasons. for starters, ace attorney fans overall tend to fall into three camps: 1. people like me who fucking hate these games, refuse to acknowledge them, and would retcon them out of existence if possible. 2. people who have found things they like about the game and have a Good Version of the characters and plots that they have constructed in their head and 3. people who view all of the hate on these games as completely overblown
the first camp Does talk about how the game is racist but we're all already in agreement about that so it's kind of preaching to the choir and a bit redundant to keep going on about. the second camp tends to acknowledge the stickier aspects of the game but focuses on making content around the elements they like rather than critique. the third camp is the type to throw the baby out with the bathwater re: critiquing a thing they like. it's all haterism to them. but either way i think its kind of fucked up how many people will be like 'aa6 isnt that bad you guys are just mean' without even acknowledging these complaints.
anyway the khura'in country vs kurain village thing is really weird to me it shows both a lack of imagination and a disregard for the series' own established lore. why would a girl from a village where almost everyone is a spirit medium need to go to a place where only, like, two people are mediums to train.
i will say though that the divination seance is kind of one of the only things i found about aa6 to be an interesting addition. for a franchise with ghost summoning and murder solving, the two have a kind of hilariously low amount of overlap so i found the idea of bringing ghost bullshit into court really fun. mechanically speaking, the divination seances also felt a LOT better to play than the mood matrix segments of aa5.
in general, i think the biggest weakness of the mainline franchise under takeshi yamazaki's stewardship is its misunderstanding of stakes. both aa5 and 6 prioritize more bombastic and impressive on paper material stakes. oh no! the ENTIRE JUSTICE SYSTEM BEING GOOD OR BAD depends on this one case! on no! we have to DEAL WITH REBEL INSURGENTS! complete horseshit when there is not competent and functional enough character writing to get us emotionally invested here. yamazaki seems to think bigger is better, and that just simply isnt true for something like ace attorney
i've pointed this out in the past when critiquing aa5 and 6 but if you look at the actual material stakes on the line in ace attorney, they're at their highest after rise from the ashes. ousting the corrupt chief of police is the most impressive and impactful thing phoenix does with his career (arguably until the jurist system, but definitely in the trilogy.) but that's not the big Finale case for his character arc. his finale case is defending his college girlfriend; a nun who lives in the mountains, whose conviction would have had zero implications on the larger fabric of ace attorney's legal system. because takumi's writing clearly shows that he understands what makes a plot impactful is the emotional stakes the characters have invested in the events.
before taking over the main franchise, takeshi yamazaki was responsible for the miles edgeworth investigations spinoffs. i do enjoy both of those games - aai2 in particular is really strong. yamazaki does a great job with edgeworth's character arc even if i have some specific gripes with the duologys writing. i think theyre solid additions to the franchise. but you can see traces of this sort of misalignment in narrative priorities here as well. for example, the last case in aai1 is notorious for still going on for, like, an entire hour or two past the time when the last remaining plot point we care about has been revealed. because yamazaki seemingly had no understanding that That was the thing the case should have been about, and that should have been the final mic drop of the game. it just keeps going! he didn't know the game was done and he added a bunch more bullshit busywork after it that no one likes!
so yeah. without going into anything even as specific as how individual plotlines or character arcs were mishandled in aa5/6 that's really my overview What Went Wrong of those games.
#i genuinely might need to put my opinion on aa5 and 6 in my faq at this point#not because i mind getting a chance to talk about how much i hate these games. but just for due diligence#ace attorney#*there are two perfect ace attorney games: aa1 and plvspwaa#this got so long im so so sorry.#i think ill just hotlink this post in my faq because it hits most of my talking points about these games

On the one hand, I absolutely love the high tragedy of Denethor's arc in the book, think it's amazingly well-written, and that he is one of the most complex and fascinating characters that Tolkien ever wrote.
On the other, there's part of me that's also a little frustrated by how much it has to happen because Tolkien kind of wrote himself into a corner with the Ruling Stewards. He's insistent on a few things about them:
Their initial rise to power as perma-regents of Gondor was squeaky-clean. Mardil was a paragon of virtue, he tried to prevent Eärnur from getting himself killed, there were no clear successors, and retaining the regency prevented another Kinstrife and created a stable institution that would hold Gondor together for 900+ years after the failure of the kings.
They are a high Númenórean family descended from Elendil, even if they're not formally of the line of Elendil (for unknown reasons, but most likely because they're descended through women).
Denethor is notably very similar to Aragorn, in intellect, wisdom, stature, ability, even appearance. He is a towering and respected figure, and he and his sons are highly popular with their people (even with children).
Denethor's military tactics in the book are very good, and UT says Sauron hoped Denethor would be less prepared than he actually was.
Denethor is proud, unbending, and personally dislikes and distrusts Aragorn. He thinks Gandalf is using him against Sauron for now while planning for Aragorn to take power later (this is filtered through his pride but ... um, is he wrong?).
Faramir, now Denethor's last heir, is a fantastic if reluctant warrior and captain, a super special Númenórean throwback, and a thoughtful, intelligent, and wise person who is humbler than Denethor, but also established as wary about Aragorn.
Gondor formally rejected the claim of Aragorn's family before the Ruling Stewardship even existed.
What all this means is that Denethor, if alive, is someone who will never willingly give way to Aragorn. Denethor has legal precedent on his side, he is himself a perfectly good ruler from a long-standing, stable, legitimate ruling family and a highly capable military leader in war, he is liked by his people, and he even has a viable heir regardless of the personal strain between him and Faramir.
There's just no reason for Aragorn to take power that Denethor, as written, would find remotely persuasive. But Denethor is also too noble and capable and special for a power grab on Aragorn's side to feel right, esp given how destructive it would be in the middle of a war (as Aragorn acknowledges!). Despite the sparkly kingliness and mystical airs, this is fundamentally a dynastic dispute between two different houses descended from Elendil, based on the minutia of Gondorian and Númenórean law and precedent, and a fight over that is ... not the kind of story this is.
Denethor has to be driven to self-destruction by the plot so that Aragorn's rise can happen. It simply would not occur if Denethor was alive and in his right mind. Faramir has to be mystically healed by Aragorn so that his reservations will dissolve and he will voluntarily remove himself from the picture in a way that doesn't feel bad.
And both scenes are fantastic, and make sense for the characters. But I do feel that they kind of get steamrollered by the plot to make way for Aragorn.
The thing that makes that doubly fascinating, though, is that Tolkien didn't have to prop the House of the Stewards up so thoroughly. He could have written a version where the Stewards are inadequate or really sketchy or simply can't be compared to Aragorn's greatness and it's clear why they should be replaced by him and his house. Tolkien could have made this a lot easier for himself! And I do respect the more difficult and nuanced approach Tolkien took with the Stewards by making them genuinely impressive and noble and capable in their own right and not just cardboard-cutouts for Aragorn to kick over.
But, well.

I often hear the argument that Luffy is dumb, and I can't help but be ticked off every time I hear someone say it, because Luffy isn't dumb, he's simply carefree. And I mean that in the literal sense of the word. Luffy truly does not have a care in the world. Luffy chooses not to complicate things. He does things for the simple fact of wanting to and he purposely refuses to learn about people, situations, and the nuances involved with both because the nuance just pollutes the true nature of the subjects. Luffy doesn't choose to do these things out of ignorance or selfishness, but because in the grand scheme of things, all the information that he chooses to ignore is wholly unimportant both by Luffy's own standards and to the development of the story as well. What Luffy deems unimportant does not matter at all to how things play out in the anime.
Luffy, at his core, is an incredible judge of character. Luffy's relationship with Tama is a perfect example of this. By all accounts Luffy's first impression of Tama should have been negative. She came off as a little bit mean and stand-offish. However, Luffy in his natural Luffy-fashion is unbothered. He didn't need Tama to tell him or show him explicitly the kind of person she was to understand her as a person. Despite the fact that she was a little girl, Luffy treated her with basic respect right off the bat. Luffy didn't see her as child, but rather as the self-sufficient human she was. Of course his fondness for her was only furthered by the food that Tama gave him. Luffy didn't need to know anything more about Tama after he heard that she had given him her last shares of food. He didn't need to hear Tama's sad story to understand her. She treated him with kindness, like she would a friend, even though they had just met. Luffy would go to the ends of the earth for her over that simple fact. He had no desire to learn of Wano's history to better understand how Tama got to this point in her life. All he needed to do and all thay he wanted to do was return a kindness. And that he did.
The same can be said for the part Luffy plays in Nami's story. When Nami 'betrayed' Luffy, he'd simply brushed it off. Once again, Luffy knew who Nami was without having to ask and without her having to show him explicitly. Luffy saw her 'betrayal' yet did not take it at face value. Luffy refuses to leave her behind because everything Nami had said/done in that situation muddled Luffy's inherent and instinctive understanding of her character. This next bit is ironic to say because Luffy often makes decisions with his stomach rather than his head, but its clear that Luffy would rather trust his gut feeling than try to understand Nami's actions which appeared entirely contradictory to Luffy's perception of her personality/character.
This theme rings true throughout the whole anime. This happens when Luffy chooses to trust Law on Punk Hazard over Law's rather dubious choices without needing or wanting an explanation from him. This happens when he rescues Zoro at the very beginning of the anime and he simply trusts this well-known pirate hunter not to cut him down right of the post. I beg of you all, please do not dilute Luffy's complex character design down to something so trivial as him simply "being stupid".
Sorry for the tangent, I have just always felt people who say this about Luffy sell him and his whole character design short. There is so much more that I could say about this too. I could go into detail about the ways in which Luffy is as smart as the rest of the crew (in different ways than them obviously), but that would call for several more paragraphs, so I'll just cut it here I think.
Anyways tell me what y'all think, I'm curious.
