ace attorney sibling stats

i like the aa siblings and i like compiling useless data so here's a few charts of the different kinds of sibling relationships in the series 👍 beware of spoilers if you haven't played all the games!

a few things to note:

no PLvsAA just because i haven't played it yet and don't want to see any spoilers. i don't even know if the game has siblings? if it does i might update this once i play it

i counted each sibling pair differently since there isn't a single case of more than 2 siblings that have the same relationship, e.g. pearl's relation with dahlia and iris is counted separately from dahlia and iris', because the former is a half-sisters relationship and the latter isn't

starting off with this chart because i want to mention that every instance of adopted siblings isn't explicitly stated as such in canon (edgeworth and franziska, nahyuta and apollo, kazuma and susato) but i wanted to include them anyway... this is MY post and i do what i want!! the only other instance of non-blood related siblings is valerie and dahlia, who are also the only step-siblings

again, sibling pairs are separated so nahyuta shows up in this chart twice (with apollo and with rayfa). i expected there to be a lot more sisters but you'll see why later on in the post

this chart counts when the siblings were revealed as siblings, e.g. pearl being dahlia and iris' half-sister counts as an aa3 debut. i didn't even realise aai didn't introduce any siblings even amongst the minor characters... i didn't count calisto and cece yew since that was. a lie. with aa6 and aa2 being the highest in this chart is it any wonder why they're my favourite games o<-<

below are the same charts but excluding minor characters (those that are only relevant in one case and/or don't have much plot relevance)

since all the instances of "adopted" siblings involves main characters they're a lot more prominent in this chart...

i feel the need to point out that 5 of the 7 sister pairs are the the feys... the other 2 being amara/ga'ran and lana/ema. a lot of the brothers are one-off witnesses so no wonder i thought there'd be more sisters... all of the older brother + younger sister pairs also involve main characters so that category is more prominent here too. aura/simon is the only older sister + younger brother pair here!

not much to say about this one... aa3 and aa6 being the spirit channeling family drama games checks out

here's all the data i used since i didn't know how else to display the age differences... over half of the known age differences are 7 or more years which is frankly... a lot!!!

anyway i hope this is interesting to anyone else out there i got inspired to do this because i saw someone say that the only brothers in the aa series are the gavins and the van zieks which is... kinda true since they're the only blood-related ones involving major characters?? but it definitely makes sense why it feels like there are so many more sister relationships

i don't know if this is reaching but i found out the kanji in tomurai 弔い is also pronounced chou ちょう when on its own which makes it a homophone of butterfly 蝶 ... very cool

i've been thinking about nahyuta's title as the "last rites prosecutor" because i think it's an interesting part of his character that's immediately apparent from his first appearance... in japanese it's written as トムライの検事 (tomurai no kenji) with tomurai meaning funeral/burial. this is pretty blatant considering his tendency to pray for the victim but i actually think it's really interesting that the localization opted for the term "last rites" instead

last rites are a specifically christian practice of praying for the dying to absolve them of their sins before they die - in other words, prayers given to the deceased wouldn't be considered last rites (x)

this is a pretty blatant contradiction of the original's meaning and what nahyuta actually does in the game but i think it's interesting to consider that the person he might be praying for is the defendant (and under khura'in's DC act, the defense as well), not the victim... even outside of khura'in we see that those who are proven guilty in murder trials are executed, and we know that nahyuta has been acting as a prosecutor under ga'ran, almost definitely sending several rebels and defense attorneys to their deaths in the process.

it would just be really tragic if his habit of praying came out of desperation at being forced to send innocents or even former comrades/friends to their deaths... whether it being interpreted as a funeral rite for the victim arose from the people around him or as another act of desperation from nahyuta to cover his actual intentions doesn't matter as much since i think one would have led to the other anyway...

but i really do hope khura'in does remain a part of future games even if it's not a big role... i'm still torn between what i expect from the series because in a way i do think it's nice that the story is allowed to end 🥹 belatedly too since takumi initially wanted to end the series with aa3...

that being said if they do want to bring them back i'd really love to see an aai-ish spin-off game with the khura'inese characters, aa6's ending felt so "ending but it's only the beginning" so it's a nice opportunity to continue a story if they wanted to do more with that! also yeah i hope apollo is suffering (i say this affectionately)

i don't like posting my negative opinions in spaces where people who like the thing will see because i've been on the receiving end of that way too many times so i will always use readmores and limit exposure as much as i can but at the same time i am such a big hater guys. and i don't want people getting the impression that i like things just because i don't say anything to the contrary ...

regarding my thoughts on tgaac since someone asked and i was planning on making a post anyway... warning it's pretty negative so feel free to ignore if that's not something you want to see

um i feel like i need to preface this with the fact that i had heard really good things about tgaa since i was already checking out a lot of aa spaces online before i played tgaa so my expectations for it were higher than for any other game in the series... feel like it at least somewhat constitutes the reason for my disappointment

the characters didn't appeal to me as much as previous aa games which i feel like i was more disappointed with than anything sjdhkja not that i think the characters were bad i just think it's... sad that i wasn't able to like them. a big part of this was the role asogi plays in the story because i 1) don't like characters that feel engineered to be likable in the shortest amount of time possible so you feel bad about their untimely death (in the context of tgaa1) 2) don't like death fakeouts 3) don't like amnesia tropes 😭😭 it made it really hard for me to care about the climax when i felt so whatever about one of its core characters which just made me less invested in the finale as a whole... even more unfortunate is how linked the 2 games are so i wasn't even able to enjoy the first game on its own merits because of how incomplete it felt 😔

it didn't help that i didn't feel too strongly about the other main characters either, ryunosuke and susato are fine and i enjoy them well enough but not enough for them to carry the game for me? sholmes is also unfortunately kinda unbearable to me meanwhile iris is also just. fine... i actually really liked gregson and gina in 2-3 despite not really thinking anything about them for all of tgaa1 but then they ripped that away from me in the very next case which sdjghjkgahgka i GUESS was my main interest going into the finale but it did suck not being able to see more of them together when i just started to really enjoy their dynamic together... i still can't really pinpoint how i feel about van zieks i also did not care about him until 2-3 (look no matter how much the game tries to tell me he has some special disdain for japanese people it's really hard to buy into it as a mystery when every other npc is also being similarly racist) but i did quite enjoy finding out about his relationship with albert and klint i think it's one of the things that really stuck with me irt the characters yeah big surprise the siblingliker likes the siblings

(i also quite enjoyed hosonaga and soseki even though i don't have any particular thoughts about them)

also even despite hearing about how draggy the game can get i feel like knowing that did not stop the game from feeling really unnecessarily dragged out... practically every part of the dialogue feels longer while not providing anything substantial and i really found myself surprised at how little i felt like i knew about the characters despite spending so much more time with them than some of the older aa games... i also uhh didn't know that tgaa2 was going to be such a direct sequel and even though i did play them back to back i still feel the need to judge tgaa1 as its own game to some extent and it was just a very unsatisfying game in that respect. i never thought i would be saying this but i think sometimes... sequels that are planned to be more interconnected... are worse (because of how incomplete it leaves the original)

while i (clearly) have a lot to complain about i still feel like it managed to feel really unique as an aa game in more ways than one which i think is valuable and important for the series... i think the time period really allowed its backgrounds to shine with all the details + the characters actually existing in the bg is a really nice touch that actually makes aa5-6 feel lacklustre in hindsight... was kinda surprised at how much 3d was used in cutscene-like ways and even the 2d animation looked really nice imo. character animations are also fun to look at though i think ryunosuke could've afforded to slam into the wall about 10 fewer times ((

but anyway ahhh ah if you read this far i don't want to make anyone feel bad for liking anything i didn't i just also want to be clearer about my opinions on things especially if i feel quite strongly about them... i really wanted to give this game a full chance instead of dropping it when i wasn't feeling it in the beginning which i'm glad i did! but it was really not for me and i don't see myself making a lot of content for it in the future 🙇
