hi hello this is a project i've wanted to try for a while! like you can see in the link preview (lol) this is inspired by a survey i saw before in the LL subreddit that compared fan faves across the groups of characters.

this survey is supposed to be less of a popularity poll and more of a "which octopath ii traveler do ophilia fans tend to like most?" kind of thing. please share and fill it out yourself as i would love to see the results 🥰

results! part 1, maybe?

first of all, thanks for 100 responses! it was satisfying to see the votes coming in. here's the raw table data i was working with, though i'll have a few different ones below as well

most noticeable is that for the most part the trends aren't too obvious aside from the very prominent therion/temenos overlap, but they're also the most popular characters in terms of pure numbers so even if they do have similarities i feel like both of them just. having a lot of fans plays a large part in it

i know i said this wasn't a popularity poll but it probably is something people are interested in, so here are the results for both games. for a fun comparison, i've added the results of the official japanese polls run by sqex in 2023 below:

now for the part i was really interested in! i'll look at results in terms of octopath i faves first:

here you can see the answer to my hypothetical question from my initial post; "which octopath ii traveler do ophilia fans tend to like most?" i guess the answer is castti! though ophilia only has 3 votes so far so it isn't exactly definitive

let me break down a few trends that i find interesting:

despite having one of the fewest votes, people who voted ophilia only voted for either castti or agnea. ophilia and castti are similar in design (trademark ikusy blonde woman) while also being the team's female healers, while ophilia and agnea are both one of the youngest travelers who still have a "big sister" kind of charm.

cyrus is actually the only octopath i traveler who was voted alongside every octopath ii traveler thus far! a quarter of cyrus fans voted for temenos and hikari each, while osvald was next in line.

tressa's results came as a surprise to me, as a third of her votes were paired with temenos...?!

olberic was unfortunate to only have one vote so far, which was paired with osvald. this one goes out to you, big man liker

primrose's top results are tied between throne and temenos, with hikari close behind. primrose and throne have several story similarities and temenos and hikari are also both characters whose stories have a high kill count...

the majority of alfyn votes were paired with partitio, with castti also being a significant portion! not very surprising since the boys have similar motivations. alongside cyrus/osvald, alfyn/castti was tied for the most common same job pair at 3 votes each!

therion, who has the most votes, also has a pretty wide range of responses although temenos has the clear majority here. fun fact: matsuoka yoshitsugu (therion VA) was inspired to become a voice actor because of ishida akira (temenos VA)!

h'aanit is an interesting case because most of her votes were paired with castti (older women so true) but her other votes were all paired with male characters

now for octopath ii!

half of ochette voters voted for therion, while cyrus and primrose trail behind. all 3 are interesting choices to be paired with ochette...

castti has the most diverse votes amongst the octopath ii cast, with h'aanit just barely taking the majority at 25%

just as with the octopath i results, unsurprisingly a lot of throne's votes are paired with primrose (their stories are often compared for a reason!)

most of osvald voters also voted for his fellow scholar cyrus, though h'aanit also took a significant portion. is it the socially awkward older characters...?

partitio was paired most often with alfyn, though interestingly enough therion was also a popular choice!

one third of agnea's votes were paired with tressa - youngest female traveler! - while the rest were an equal tie between ophilia, cyrus, alfyn and therion

temenos was mostly paired with therion, while cyrus, tressa and primrose also took a decent chunk each

hikari's top votes are a tie between cyrus and therion, with primrose trailing behind! even though cyrus/hikari is my personal choice i don't really see any similarity here aside from both being charming characters who don't see themselves as such lol

a few other interesting notes:

19% voted only female characters

45% voted only male characters

9% voted for the same job across games - alfyn/castti and cyrus/osvald being the most prominent

22% voted only noble travelers

20% voted only rogue travelers

not to be a killjoy but it's still crazy to me that it's considered mean to be like "maybe you should read / play / watch the source material before creating fanworks and diving into the fandom" bc every time i see somebody going "i havent played disco elysium or know anything about it tbh but uwu here's harry and kim kissing" idk maybe you should engage with it. maybe you should play the anti-capitalist surrealist game where you investigate the murder of a mercenary who led the gang rape of a foreign girl and process that for a bit? and then you can do cutesy mlm or whatever idc. but like at the absolute bare minimum you should understand what the source material involves otherwise we get the phenomenon of people joining a dragon age server and wanting content warnings for like, mage racism. like it's fine to ship and transform the genre into whatever but if you arent comfortable with discussions of the actual source content itself then maybe the fandom isnt for you and a different one is. peace and love.
