One of my personal favorites. A man tries recreating an experiment to discover the origin of language. The narrator experiments on his own children. The story itself is so upsetting but the worst part is living in the mind of the narrator who feels NOTHING.

3. At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop

A small book that packs a huge punch. The story of a soldier’s descent into madness in the trenches while fighting in WWI.

4. Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield

Lesbians, deep sea horror, & the experience of grieving someone who is physically still with you

5. Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge

This audiobook was INSANE!! Have listened to it many times. Scifi book about different types of “beasts” that exist in the world. Told in different short stories. Think about this book often!!

6. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell:

I don’t recommend this lightly. This one is hard to read & deeply uncomfortable. About the relationship between a 15 year old girl and her 45 year old teacher. Partly told from the perspective of 15 year old Vanessa & also from Vanessa when she’s 30. A reflection on trauma & the inability to let yourself believe you are a victim.

7. The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling:

Essentially Crimson Peak. Gothic horror & such a fun audiobook to listen to in the fall.

8. Rien Ne Va Plus by Margarita Karapanou:

This book is about a relationship ending & all the cruelty and pain that are involved. Told from the perspective of both people. Adored this!!

9. Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis:

This book was formative read for me as a teenager. A retelling of Psyche & Eros told from the perspective of an older sister. I related so hard to Orual the first time I read this :(

george and you had been together for quite some time now, getting to know him through a mutual friend while you still were in college, and him starting his f1 career. even though it meant that his schedule was getting busier by the minute, he still found time to hang out with you, which lead to your relationship rapidly evolving from friends to something more.

you began dating in 2019, and by the time the pandemic hit, he suggested that you should move in with him so you could still spend time together. of course, it had been a great challenge for the whole time that the strict confinement lasted, but you got to know eachother even more and it definitely brought you closer. on the downside, you still had to get to know parts of his family, like his nephews oliver and amelia.

"but love, what if they don't like me?" you were anxiously picking up your nails, sign that indicated just how nervous you were about meeting the kids that he so deeply adored. "how could they not? george said, while taking his left hand off the steering wheel to grab your palm, so you could stop hurting yourself.

a few days ago he had convinced you to join them to the karting spot where his niece would be racing for the first time. it seemed like a good idea back then, but as the day had come closer you grew more anxious. of course you wanted them to like you, after all, getting their approval mattered as much as getting his parents'.

"I don't know, george, you know them best!" you said, fidgeting now with your hands, and returned his hand to him so he could park the car. once he was done with the task, george turned his body to look at you, and quickly the blue of his eyes managed to calm you a bit, along with his sweet words. "they're great kids. i'm sure they'll love you".

against your worst thoughts and scenarios, it went surprisingly well. they warmed up to you quicker that you would have expected, with oliver hugging you as soon as he got close. amelia, on the other hand, was a bit colder, but you figured it would be because the nerves from the race were setting in. after all, you saw how george was on the track too: silent, determined and focused on his goal. but thankfully, the little race went great for her, and you and oliver were cheering nonstop for the girl.

after the event ended, joined with three very-happy-russells, you all went to eat some ice-cream and enjoy the buzzing feeling of a race gone right, as amelia had reached the three higher steps of the podium, ones that his uncle knew very well after the great season he was having at mercedes.

"you'll replace me in no time!" said george, nonstop moving the little girl that was on his arms while on the way to the shop. "i'll definitely tell toto we should hire you as a reserve driver". at that, the little girl laughed and hide her little face on your boyfriend's neck, clearly embarrassed due to george's encouraging words.

when it was getting late, you dropped the kids back to their home, where their father, george's brother, greeted you warmly, as their whole family always did.

coming back home after a long day, you plummeted on the couch, too tired to even make your way to your shared bedroom. george had gone to the kitchen to make something for you two to eat, but you could hear how he was talking to someone on the phone. when you finally gathered a bit of energy and managed to carry yourself to the cooking area, to help him with whatever he was doing, you recognised the little voices of the kids coming through your boyfriend's phone, when they asked him something that made you warm inside.

again, apologies for how horrendously late this is. But yes! I have many headcanons for Julia, and I've been gaining more as I explore her character a lot in my fics. She's such an underrated character and I absolutely adore her

Here are my Julia headcanons

- Adores art. She and JB would talk the most with each other at Thanksgivings, and she’d listen intently to him relaying the going-ons of the art world. She’s the one responsible for most of the art bought and hung in both their Cambridge house and their Truro house. 

 - Her brother is younger than her and they’re very close. She’s the one who got him into art which led him to becoming an art history professor. 

- Unable to have children. Similarly to Adele, who had no biological children, Julia considered Jude to be her child. 

- Her mother walked out on their family when she was very young. Julia barely remembers her, but it was a heartbreak in her childhood. Her father never remarried.

- Stayed in the States because of Harold. She’d gotten a job offer for a lab based in London and had been considering returning to England around the time she met him, but as their relationship developed, she decided to stay. 

- Had so many pets growing up. Birds and cats and dogs and hamsters. Her last pet was an aged Jack Russell Terrier that she’d named Agatha. Agatha passed when Julia was in Year 12. 

- Was the one who suggested what would eventually become the Truro house. She and Harold had been considering purchasing a vacation home for about a year when she was told of the house by an acquaintance in real estate. She and Harold immediately loved it. 

- She was the one who asked Harold out when they met. Harold was still tender from his divorce with Liesl and was hesitant to get into another relationship. After Harold became friends with Julia, she asked him to see an opera together and he agreed. They had such a wonderful time together that he asked her on a second date. 

- For most of her life, she’d kept her hair very short. She preferred it that way, as it was easier to manage and kept it out of her face. But when she was fifteen, she wanted to experiment with her look and so she grew it longer to her shoulders. She absolutely hated it and chopped it off in the bathroom sink. Ever since, she’s kept it short. 

- She doesn’t like most typical British foods. However, she is very fond of British sweets and pastries. In Particular, Victoria Sponge Cake is her favourite and she would have it every year on her birthday. 

- It was actually through her many pets that she would meet her childhood friend Dennys. His father was the veterinarian who cared for one of her cats. 

- Despite being very pale, she tans surprisingly well. Sunburns are very uncommon for her. 

- The Saint Jude statue that Willem bought for them got moved around a lot in the house. It eventually found its permanent spot on Julia’s dressing table. 

- Has a high tolerance for spicy foods, but doesn’t really like them. 

- Julia has a very good fashion sense. In secondary school, she was voted the most fashionable by her peers. Despite not often keeping up with fashion trends, she’s always very well-put together and fashionable. After several years of being married, Harold still finds himself speechless with awe seeing her when she’s gotten ready for an event or an outing. 

- She didn’t sleep for weeks after finding out about Jude’s cutting. She would lay awake and stare at her phone and try to will herself to call him. But she couldn’t. She was, as they all were, afraid of driving him away or saying the wrong thing. It remained her biggest regret, especially after he passed.

- Loves to cook. Julia often found her love language to be in her cooking, though she wasn’t as intense about it the way Jude was. When they were friends and in the early months of them dating each other, one of the things Julia and Harold bonded over was their love for Italian food. She tried to teach him how to cook once and it took hours (and many open windows) until the burning smell left the house. When they adopted Jude, Julia often cared for him through cooking. She always stayed with him in the kitchen whenever he cooked. She always tried, in subtle ways, to feed him more when he visited. 

- Actually really enjoys Willem’s movies. While a lot of them love Willem’s movies mostly for the fact that Willem is starring in them, rather than the movie itself, she actually greatly enjoys the movies and often rewatches them. She was ecstatic when Willem asked her to be his date to the award show.

That's... so cute...

My relationship to my family (grandma, dad, aunt + family), my partner, and friends. I'm really glad to have such good contact with them and it's usuallly the first thing I'm trying to remember when I'm having a bad day. I also had a loving relationship with my mom and always miss her. She was the first close person that died in my life and it changed me a lot (for the better). As in, I take much more time to spend with my remaining family.

Drawing - it's a need, it's calming, it's motivating... I couldn't imagine not drawing. It gives me such joy to observe, doodle, linework. Of course I also enjoy the fandom aspect of it all. Reactions to my art are always amazing, but I just adore the process of drawing itself (also recently I've been super motivated as well). It's just... satisfying.

Dogs - and hopefully soon my own! I'm in the process of getting a little pup and will 100% update once it's here <3 I also grew up with a small Terrier/Jack Russel mix and can't imagine my life without one. Whenever there's a dog, I MELT. I love them so, so much.... <3

Good food. I enjoy cooking as well, when I'm not stressed. But good food is something I LOVE. I will eat pretty much anything, but I very much appreciate when it's well seasoned and has good consistency (meat not dry, veggies not just mush). I also think almost all sweet desserts you get out (in restaurants etc) are overrated and unbalanced. Just fat and sugar without good, actual taste. Also I love cheese goddamn. I'll have a cheese plate (GOOD cheese) any day over chocolate or any sweets.

My ear piercings. A year ago, I had the sudden realization that I'm an actual adult and can do what I want???? I never paid much attention to piercings before but once I took note, I realized just how absolutely stunning I find different ear piercings. I've since got my second and third lobes and in February got additional double helix piercings, which are still healing. I've got two more ear piercings planned (one mid-helix with some stud, one mid-helix ring). I'm not big on jewelry otherwise, but god do I love ear piercings. I just think they look stunning and I love them on myself <3

2D was soooo anxious because while despite knowing that his parents would love you!! its still intimidating, y'know? Makes him all antsy n anxious, but then again.. he always gets antsy when he sees his family again, 2D's a working man that lives witg his bandmates!

While he does want it to be a surpise for his parents, it shouldn't be a surpise for you! It might be mean despite the nice intent, like that one time he gave murdoc a can of pecans with a fake snake that shoots out of it, well it was SUPPOSED to be fake, but thats a different story! he wants you to be aware and okay with it first

When making you aware is done, he's still antsy and very very anxious! he has you help him write down what he's going to say on a card, that despite all attempts, he is still dead-set as a way of memorizing his "lines"

Only for him to forget all that he rehearsed, just telling them that with such a bashful look on his look. They accept you both and the fact that you're a couple, ofc!! But more importantly: Why didn't he see them sooner?? Which leads to a whole different situation with twists and turns of wanting to make it a surpise, how he had to reschedule when he wanted to reveal it because Noodle and Murdoc caught the kitchen on fire and how he also caught on fire because he was to close to the oven, so Russel comes to the rescue and puts the fire out while you frantically checked on 2D for any psychical damage, which, he had to let them know, the only thing that got damaged was his super cool spacesuit he had on and the pizza rolls he was gonna eat for lunch with you, and the whole shock of it really did both of you in and also Noodle and Murdoc had to clean up the kitchen which took 3 days, which is why they were so late, because Noodle was supposed to drive you two there but she did a oopises daisy and blew up the oven

GALTx eNews: Russell Wants To Go Home!

Russell is ready to find his forever home! He is a 3 year old American retired racer with four races to his credit, the most adorable overbite, and the softest fur. He is a “velcro boy” who will follow you room-to-room, even if you’re only gone a minute. He really does not want to miss out on any experience with his people and would love to find a family who is home a lot. Having another dog in the house is less important to him as he tends to get a little anxious when his people are away, even with a dog buddy at home. Russell can also be a little too vocal for apartment life and should not live with cats or small dogs.

Russell and his foster Greyhound brother love running laps in the yard, playing fetch, and generally enjoying retired life. Russell’s favorite toys are balls and the Kong Wubba. Squeaker toys are not just a joy, but a challenge to be conquered. He needs a little supervision when playing with them. Russell loves a good ear scratching and especially loves gentle scratches down his spine to his tail. He will do the cutest wiggle as you get those hard to reach spots and look at you with the biggest hound smile. Meal times are some of Russell’s favorite moments. He will let you know when it is time for breakfast and dinner, usually with some polite vocalizations and nudging with his snoot. He’s a good eater and a slow-feeder raised bowl has helped him greatly. He doesn’t mind his foster brother eating in the same area with him. 

Russell accepts verbal correction very well and learns quickly! He has already learned “go to bed” and training for other commands will just take a little patience and repetition with treat rewards. For example, he has learned to wait to eat his meals until he’s told to “eat!” and will come when called. Russell is great on walks and loves going on “smell adventures.” He will walk without pulling and if you keep up a pace, he will just walk with you without stopping to sniff. Ten Books to Know Me – I was tagged by the lovely @landwriter and @valeriianz to share 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know me better, or that I just really like.

it was practically impossible for me to choose just ten (and in fact I didn't) and I definitely provide WAY more background info than probably anyone is interested in, so this got looong and I'm gonna put my commentary under a cut! but here is my list, in no particular order:

(1) Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë if you physically forced me to choose one book that is my favorite of all time, it might be Jane Eyre. I can't swear to that, but it's a good contender. I couldn't even tell you when I first read it, but it was some time before my sophomore year of high school (we were assigned it in an English lit class and I was already intimately familiar with it). I just adore Jane so much. she's so smart and stubborn and weird and self-aware and strong in a way that young Nora identified with and envied in equal parts. I frequently re-read this book when my life was feeling overwhelmingly negative, because it comforted me to think that if everything could turn out okay for Jane in the end, it might turn out okay for me, too. would I love it as much if I read it for the first time now, as an adult? maybe not. the whole crazy-wife-in-the-attic is... not a good look. I get why people don't love it. but I do and I always will.

(2) East of Eden, John Steinbeck I can pick this book up, open it to any page, and there's a better-than-even chance it will immediately make me burst into tears. (actually, as I'm writing this I'm realizing that I'm really due for a re-read.) listen.. I come from a sprawling dysfunctional family and I love a good sprawling epic about a dysfunctional family. I love religious metaphors. I love detailed and loving descriptions of nature and beloved land. is it a bit heavy handed at times? yes. is it still one of the great American novels? yes. timshel.

(3) The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkein (insert Gimli gif "That still only counts as one!!") I associate these books very closely with my family, especially my dad. one of my earliest memories is of my dad reading The Hobbit out loud to me when I was very young – I remember crying so hard when Thorin died that I just about made myself sick. look, you know why I love these books. you love them for the same reason. everyone loves them. they're perfect. the movies all came out around my dad's birthday and we went to see them as a family every year. my sister and brother and I have literally gotten drunk and cried on the couch whilst holding hands during our millionth rewatch of Return of the King. I don't know who I would be if these books weren't on my list.

(4) Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heinlein this is one of those books I read under exactly the right circumstances, during my senior year of high school, in a literature of fantasy class filled with a bunch of other intense artsy nerds; we were all figuring ourselves out and finding our places in the world and learning how to be humans and to develop those deep, intense friendships that you can only form when you're 17 or 18 years old. we all wholeheartedly adopted the concepts of grokking and sharing water and we would go around telling each other thou art God. it's dated, as is a lot of sci fi from the early 60s; the casual sexism and homophobia are not pleasant to read and in retrospect some of the religious symbolism is a little heavy handed. but I still have a soft space in my heart for it (in fact I just loaned a friend my copy this winter). I also love the concept of a Fair Witness.

(5) The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett this has been one of my favorite books since I was about six years old. as a kid I was obsessed with the idea of secret worlds, and especially when kids had things going on that grownups didn't know about or couldn't access. (I loooved stories like Narnia.) it's just such a sweet book. let's all heal our trauma with the power of pale green points and singing the Doxology to a bunch of birds.

(6) A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith I was probably just a little bit too young to read this book the first time I picked it up. I didn't know novels could tell stories like this. I didn't know you could write a book that was so painful and beautiful at the same time, or that things that are true can be so ugly and so beautiful at the same time. it cracked open something inside me when I finished it. I think I actually woke my mom up so I could cry at her about it. I think Francie is another protagonist that I identified with to an almost uncomfortable degree, and I think a big part of the power of this book is how accurately it depicts the inner life of a weird little kid in an intense world she's only just beginning to understand.

(7) Momo oder Die seltsame Geschichte von den Zeit-Dieben und von dem Kind, das den Menschen die gestohlene Zeit zurückbrachte, Michael Ende (the older English translation is titled The Grey Gentlemen, but I think a newer translation uses the original title) definitely another children-save-the-day-with-their-secret-child-knowledge story; one that also makes incredibly insightful commentary about consumerism and technology and the speed of modern life – a message that's only gotten more and more relevant since it was first published in 1973. Momo herself is a one of my favorite members in the pantheon of weird little kid characters whom I adore. and the Grey Gentlemen are one of the creepiest, most inexorable antagonists I can think of from children's literature. I haven't read the English translation and I'm not sure how it compares to the original, or how difficult it is to find in the US. but it's absolutely worth tracking down a copy.

(8) The Blue Castle, LM Montgomery as much as I adore the Anne books, and really all of LMM's work, my absolute favorite of hers is this one. it might even be the book on this list that I've re-read most often, and as you might have gathered, I re-read books a lot. (there was a time during the peak of the pandemic when I was having trouble sleeping and I probably read this book, or parts of it, about every week or two. it was like eating my favorite food, it just made me feel better.) it's one of her few more adult works, and a straight-up romance, and it's CRIMINALLY unknown and underappreciated.

(9) The Sparrow, Mary Doria Russell this book has it all. aliens. linguistics. space travel. Jesuits. philosophical questions about what it means to be a child of God. like... the main character is a space traveling polyglot linguist priest. that hits ALL my buttons. anyway this is an absolutely gorgeously written sci fi novel that's not really a sci fi novel, kind of the way Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel and another honorable mention on this list) is a post-apocalyptic novel that's not really about the apocalypse. it's one of those books that I'm just constantly recommending to other people because it's so so good. (it is also kind of heartbreakingly tragic and involves some fairly serious trauma of both the physical and psychological/religious varieties, so if you pick it up be aware of that.)

(10) Gaudy Night, Dorothy L Sayers I adore all of Lord Peter Wimsey (except maybe Whose Body? and even that has its merits) but Gaudy Night is my favorite, although Murder Must Advertise is a very close runner-up. I have such an enormous crush on Harriet Vane, you don't even KNOW. I want to be best friends with her and also steal her away from Lord Peter and marry her myself. she is such a perfectly imperfect heroine AND she is absolutely his intellectual equal and that's why he's madly in love with her. swoon. again, this is a book that has it all. mystery. romance. esoteric academic rituals. philosophical questions about what it means to be a woman in a world where your gender will always be the most important thing people perceive about you no matter what you do. life imitating art imitating life imitating art. WWI changing the fabric of society. consider my buttons pushed.

(11) The Great and Terrible Quest, Margaret Lovett yes, I'm adding an extra eleventh book. I can't help it. this is another criminally unknown and underappreciated book and since nobody's ever heard of it I am required to shout from the rooftops about how great it is. it's a classic fantasy story (I guess you could call it a fairy tale, but there isn't really anything magical about it, just knights and kings and stuff) about a young boy who lives with his cruel grandfather. he saves a mysterious man from a terrible head wound and gets swept along in the man's quest. it's simple and beautiful and has one of the best endings of any book I've ever read. Lovett only published a handful of books, but they're all marvelous. please find them if you can.

I really haven't been online this week so I have no idea who's already done this and who hasn't and I don't know who to tag, so I'm going to take the coward's way out and just say if you're seeing this and looking for an excuse to answer these questions, consider this your sign.

My Hamefura Original Characters Part 6

Giovanni Terni - the queen’s younger twin brother and a baron. He is a cunning and competent man with a hidden a sadistic side that he displays when angered. Despite this, he is genuinely kind and cares about his family as well as those those under him. He is very doting towards his wife and daughter, and admires his older twin sister a lot. He resembles his nephew Geordo but his eyes are a greenish-blue color and has very powerful Water Magic.

Letizia Terni - the wife of Giovanni Terni; she is from a wealthy merchant family. She is a very cheerful and kind woman who deeply loves her husband and daughter.She is also highly intelligent and business-savvy, handling all the barony’s financial matters with grace and competence. She is a very beautiful woman with black hair and brown eyes.

Georgina “Gina” Terni - the daughter of Giovanni and Letizia Terni, and the heiress of the Terni Barony. She appears sweet and cheerful at first glance but is actually a very competent person who hides her more cunning and intelligent side. That’s not to say that her kindness is false, she is genuinely nice and also has a bit of a dorky side. She looks like her father with golden blonde hair and greenish-blue eyes.

Natalio Flores - Noelia Flores’ father and a marquis. He is arrogant and proud of his noble status, looking down on commoners though he does manges his territory with competence. He sees his marriage to his wife like a business partnership between their families though he does respect her. He absolutely adores his daughter and is always spoiling her. He is tall with light hair and a mustache; he has above average Fire Magic and is quite apt in using it.

Carol Flores - wife of Natalio Flores and mother of Noelia Flores. She is haughty, entitled, and proud of her noble status, looking down on those she sees as inferior. She was one of Luigi Claes’ admirers and hates Millidiana for, in her mind, stealing her rightful place as a duchess. She sees her marriage only as business though she does respect her husband. Though she doesn’t dislike her daughter, she sees Noelia as a way to increase her status and loves to brag about her accomplishments. She also encourages Noelia to take Katarina’s place as Geordo’s fiancée, as a way to get revenge and “win” against Millidiana. She looks a lot like Noelia. Her magical element is fire and although her magic is weak, she has very fine control over it.

Candelaria Russell - wife of Gaston Russell and mother of Vincent Russell; she is also the younger sister of Natalio Flores. Although she appears to be demur and shows deference to her husband, she is very intelligent and observant. She loves her son and wishes for him to be less like his father. She is genuinely fond of her husband but finds his grudge against Dan Ascart annoying. She has a very delicate and lovely appearance with light hair and hazel eyes. Her magical element is fire and she is very apt in wielding it.

Blanche Pionne - officially, she is the magic-wielding daughter of a foreign noble who came to study at the Magic Academy because mages are rare outside of Sorcier but, in reality, she is a spy sent by another country. She was originally an orphan commoner until she was taken in my her superiors and trained to be a spy. She presents herself as sweet, cheerful, and a bit naive but is actually very intelligent as well as envious of the actual noblewomen that surround her. Despite this, she is genuinely kind to other commoners and those she thinks are oppressed by nobles. She was specifically trained to seduce men but it turns out she finds the fairer sex more attractive. “Blanche Pionne” (”white pawn” in French) is actually a “code name” given to her by her superiors and doesn’t remember her real name. She has platinum blonde hair and light blue eyes; her appearance is described as both cute and alluring. Although she is a commoner by birth, she has fire magic, though is very weak.

Cassius Stuart - he is the son of one of King Owen’s half-brothers, making him a cousin of the princes. His father was killed during the succession battle when he was a baby, forcing him and his mother to go into hiding. He hates Owen for “stealing” the throne from his father and seeks to take it for himself. He is insanely jealous of his cousins and feels entitled to everything they have as princes. He is very cunning and intelligent but has a nasty temper that can blind him. His magical element is fire and is very powerful with it. He is very handsome with silver hair and green eyes; he’s the same age as Geoffrey.

I decided to give names and flesh out the three thugs from my fic Kidnapped.

These three thugs are mercenaries who get hired by certain nobles to do their dirty work. Although they focus on stealing and kidnapping for ransom, they are not above killing if necessary.

Trey - the leader of the trio. He is originally from Lousabre where he is a wanted criminal. Smarter than he appears, he is the one who makes plans and deals with their “customers”. Tad is his younger brother and, although he is often annoyed by his impulsiveness, he truly loves him. He is also very fond of Ned and takes on an mentor role towards him. He can use a large variety of weapons though he is not a master of any. Tall and muscular with a bald head and wearing an eyepatch.

Tad - Trey’s younger brother and the “muscle” of the trio. Like Trey, he is a wanted criminal from Lousabre. Brutish, he likes to taunt the people he kidnaps but he is a bit stupid and can be impulsive if angered. Genuinely looks up to his brother and sees Ned as a little brother. Taller and more muscular than his older brother, his face is covered in scars.

Edwin “Ned” Clay - the youngest member of the trio. Native of Sorcier, he is the bastard son of a prostitute and a noble who rejected him because he didn’t have magic. His mother abandoned him as a child so he had to resort to stealing to survive. He was eventually found and taken in by Trey and Tad. He is very intelligent and puts on an affable air but he is actually rather devious. He does genuinely care about Trey and Tad, seeing them as mentors and older brothers. He is only a few years older than Katarina and her friends. He is a good sword-fighter. He is taller than Keith and very handsome with brown hair and chestnut brown eyes. He wears a gold earring on one ear.

Runner Five: Alicia Emily Bright

The OG, my traumatised baby, who I will protect with my life but also trauma dump on. 

Has left side Hemiplegia.

Is neurodivergent AF (autism)

diagnosed with GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder)

Very sensitive to loud noises, wet clothing and mess on her skin.

Selective mute due to anxiety from the helicopter crash and autism.

Had to kill her zombified mother with a kitchen knife on day zero.

Also had to shoot her younger brother, Louis, at Mullins after he was bitten a few weeks before she arrived at Abel.

Is currently dating Sam Yao, and is actually engaged to him (as of season 6).

Short sighted.

Huge Nerd. Will talk about Doctor Who and Red Dwarf for hours if you let her. Loves DnD.

Has an emotional support puppy by the name of Scraps, a Jack Russell Terrier who she rescued in season 2 and whom she adores. To lose him would literally be like losing a child to her. He is her baby. It sure would be a shame if something happened to him, say for example, someone killed him at the end of season 5. 

Forgets to look after herself constantly, potentially has a death wish (or at least thats Abel Township’s theory), will kill and be killed for those she loves.  

New Canton Runner 5: Joel James Bright

Born in 1979, to Edith and Robert Bright. Younger brother of Dominic.

Married childhood sweetheart, Maria when they were 19.

Father of Alicia and Louis Bright.

Was in a band in university. Gave it up to start a family.

Secondary school history teacher.

Adores his children, will die for them.

Plays guitar like a pro.

Short sighted.

Got knocked out by his zombified wife on Z Day, and was assumed dead by his children.

Despite his bleeding head, he managed to find his way to New Canton in the early days of the apocalypse. Believed his children were dead (he was half right).

Close with Chris McShell and Lem.

Overjoyed to discover at least his daughter was alive.

Very protective of Alicia in new Canton following the Abel explosion in the season one finale.

Died in London, buried under a building he blew up.

Left a message to Alicia via video and Alicia stumbled across the site whilst in London and retrieved by luck his broken glasses to remember him by.

Nobody knows what happened to his body.

Has a memorial in New Canton and an grave by Mullins base, next to his son, Louis’ grave.

Walker- Tabitha ‘Tammy’ Natalie Walker.

Alicia’s uncle Dominic is Tammy’s father.

Lived in Scotland with her mum, Allison.

Lived in Fostercare after the death of her mum, six years prior to The Walk.

Goes by either ‘Tabs’ or ‘Tammy’ (sometimes even by her middle name as she’s not overly fond of her first name)

19 years old at the start of The Walk (which takes place c. 2016 as Boris Johnson’s still Mayor of London) and turns 20 during.

Coincidentally, her surname is the same as her computer generated codename, Walker.

Bubbily, but also extremely sensible and serious.

More extroverted than Alicia, but less than the average person.

Was on her way to meet family at Paddington station as she was travelling down for a week in London with her dad, step mum, Ruby, half siblings, Tara, David and Luke, her uncle Joel, her aunt Maria and her cousins Alicia and Louis, as an early birthday present when she was approached by Fiona and dragged into the whole mess.

Close with Alicia before the events of The Walk.

Has a massive crush on Lawrence. in fact they sort of start a relationship.

Has PTSD due to the events of the Walk.

Survived day zero and lives in Mullins base during the apocalypse. Where she reconnects with her father Dominic, and cousins Alicia and Louis, but Louis dies a few weeks in and Alicia leaves for Abel Township on a special mission. Neither cousin are aware the other is still alive since then.

Sapper 5- James ‘Jamie’ Edward Carter

Jamie Carter was born to Molly and George Carter in 1900. He’s their only son.

His father was a policeman who was one of a handful of people who knew the identity of Jack The Ripper (although Jamie would never learn who it was) and his mother was responsible for uncovering the ‘Bicycle Face’ conspiracy at the age of 16, and was an avid suffragette and campaigner against police corruption.

Because of this, his family has always been, unbeknownst to him and his relatives, on a government watch list. 

He left school at 14 and started an apprenticeship in engineering.

He then signed up to fight in the war in 1915, underage. He survived, travelling across the globe from Africa to Russia.

Eventually he met Elizabeth Stewart, a Scottish nurse whilst in Russia.

Both of them were stuck in Russia after the war for a couple of years, and during that time they fell in love. They managed to leave Russia back to the London just before the Tsar was assassinated, and Jamie returned back to his apprenticeship, becoming an accomplished engineer and setting up his own company. 

despite this he constantly suffered flashbacks and nightmares from his time at war. 

They had three children. George, Joseph ‘Jojo’ and Edith ‘Edie’. 

He passed away in March 1999 at the age of 99. 

He is the grandfather of Dominic and Joel Bright and the great grandfather of Tabitha Walker, Alicia, Tara, Louis, David and Luke Bright.

Have you ever been chosen by an animal? For example, some family friends had Jack Russell puppies and they gave me one for my 10th birthday, I just knew we were going to see the puppies until we got there then my mom told me. Well we went back to the barn and when the door was barely open out poured the puppies and one ran straight over to me. I picked it up and was cuddling it and kissing it and then asked which puppy they had picked out for me. It was Cotton the one who'd come straight to me while the others all ran around everywhere.

A few years ago we went into the pet store and there were these two adorable kittens I was immediately obsessed with. Even though they didn’t really connect to any of us, my parents ended up getting them because my birthday was around then and we’d been missing having pets after our old cat died. The female prefers my mom to any of us, and the male is just a mischief-maker, but they’re both very skittish and neither enjoys being pet all that much.

Then a year later, during COVID, we semi-impulsively drove two hours to get a puppy. We’d wanted one for a while and were prepared to care for one but the actual decision to get this dog was spur-of-the-moment! He’s a ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and looks like a pumpkin despite all the exercise we give him lol. He and my dad (who had his misgivings about him in the first place) adore each other :)

I hope I’ll be able to find a pet I have that instant connection with someday. I’m so glad you found yours!! That’s such a sweet story!!
