1. The Book of X by Sarah Rose Etter

Etter is quickly becoming a new favorite writer! Cassie is born with her abdomen twisted in a knot and her family owns a meat quarry. So weird & so good.

2. The Dumb House by John Burnside

One of my personal favorites. A man tries recreating an experiment to discover the origin of language. The narrator experiments on his own children. The story itself is so upsetting but the worst part is living in the mind of the narrator who feels NOTHING.

3. At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop

A small book that packs a huge punch. The story of a soldier’s descent into madness in the trenches while fighting in WWI.

4. Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield

Lesbians, deep sea horror, & the experience of grieving someone who is physically still with you

5. Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge

This audiobook was INSANE!! Have listened to it many times. Scifi book about different types of “beasts” that exist in the world. Told in different short stories. Think about this book often!!

6. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell:

I don’t recommend this lightly. This one is hard to read & deeply uncomfortable. About the relationship between a 15 year old girl and her 45 year old teacher. Partly told from the perspective of 15 year old Vanessa & also from Vanessa when she’s 30. A reflection on trauma & the inability to let yourself believe you are a victim.

7. The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling:

Essentially Crimson Peak. Gothic horror & such a fun audiobook to listen to in the fall.

8. Rien Ne Va Plus by Margarita Karapanou:

This book is about a relationship ending & all the cruelty and pain that are involved. Told from the perspective of both people. Adored this!!

9. Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis:

This book was formative read for me as a teenager. A retelling of Psyche & Eros told from the perspective of an older sister. I related so hard to Orual the first time I read this :(

so im still persevering in charlotte brontë's shirley. yesterday i went to a poetry open mic & this guy read a really uncomfortable oversexual piece - it wasn't even a poem - but all i could think of was the part in shirley where she talks about being subjected to sir philip's bad poetry and her secondhand embarrassment... yeah, lots of good relatable social commentary and observations of everyday social experiences in this novel - i think charlotte reminds me of austen sometimes in those regards!

and in other news i'm also at the beginning of herman melville's moby dick. its much less boring than i thought it would be so far! some of the stuff with queequeg has been killing me - the descriptions of ishmael waking up with queequeg spooning him were like something out of a modern cartoon. and (not only because of that moment) i deeply wonder if the "head-seller" bit was supposed to be an innuendo for homosexuality/prostitution considering it was in the same chapter concerning ishmael's panic over having to share a bed with said "head-selller."

i'm so sad the ending for moby dick was spoiled for me but hopefully i'll be able to forget about that just like i somehow conveniently forgot about the main twist in jane eyre and subsequently managed to be more shocked by it than any other plot twist i've ever come across. the mind is a curious thing so we'll see

About You

When did you start writing?

as soon as i could hold a pen. i have notebooks FULL of little me's stories (i keep everything ive ever written. for nostalgia.) it was mostly silly escapism for a lonely child but now it's sweet to look at and giggle. from when i was maybe eight? nine?: "Pain and fear, like a perfect recipe. Pain and fear, milk and eggs"

Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write?

mmm probably. when i say ill read anything, i mean ill read ANYTHING. i dont think ill ever write a hockey romance but im down to clown

Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared?

poetry-wise Bhanu Kapil has been a massive inspiration for me. also Kaveh Akbar and Ariana Reines (Mercury sits in a place of honor on my bookshelf). for novels? i feel like i emulate whatever i last read. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver did horrible (affectionate) things to the way i write

Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)? (Room, coffee shop, desk, etc.)

my office! my favorite place in the world!! cozy lights (that double as gamer lights), diet coke can graveyard, comfy office chair big enough for me to sit in a way that absolutely destroys my posture. sticky notes everywhere (a fun challenge! can i read my own handwriting?) AND!! i have an audience

What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse?

reading something else, talking to someone about whatever im stuck on, setting a timer and just dumping everything in my brain (something in there HAS to be worth pursuing)

Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about?

HA!

Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all?

overbearing parental figures that believe they're acting in the best interest of their kid... surprising when i realized that it's in almost everything i write characters that are good at heart but commit atrocities due to their circumstances... less surprising oh! and death. i write a lot about death (someone pointed this out recently and i was like huh. you right)

Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.)

Theodore is my favorite!! he got here first!!!! he's my precious loser baby boy who HAPPENS to be the heir of death but he's trying his best! he's pathetic!! he's doomed!! but he means well! he doesn't want anyone to die alone! he wants to be good! he wants to be good soooo bad!! he hates rivers but loves the ocean!! he lies to everyone, including himself! he's simultaneously full of self-loathing and self-righteousness!! AND... he's bisexual!!

Which of your characters do you think you’d be friends with in real life?

i would kick it with Robbie for SURE. snarky little smarty pants that can't sit still for more than five minutes, we'd be peas

Which of your characters would you dislike the most if you met them?

*looks around nervously* ... Marcella (BOO!! TOMATO!!) im sensitive and she would be mean to me!! i feel like we'd warm up to each other eventually but not before she made me cry

Tell me about the process of coming up with of one, all, or any of your characters.

they just kinda... show up. and reveal more about themselves as i write them

Do you notice any recurring themes/traits among your characters?

ougffff. lots of anger in these parts. most of my characters are angry, esp the women. as they should be

How do you picture them? (As real people you imagined, as models/actors who exist in real life, as imaginary artwork, as artwork you made or commissioned, anime style, etc.)

depends on the character! for main guys, they get listed descriptions but i cant picture them in my head (thank you picrew). but others? they're like. blurry shadows moving through the story (do NOT ask me what Uriel looks like! i DONT KNOW!)

Your Writing

What’s your reason for writing?

words in brain make story in head. need story out of head so i can focus on literally anything else no but seriously. that quote that's like "the only thing worse than writing is not writing." it's like. a maintenance activity. if im feeling especially wound up it's probably because i havent written anything lately

Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers?

if you leave me ANY comment i am kissy you on the forehead. just knowing that someone read it let alone enjoyed it... waoh

How do you feel about your own writing? (Answer in whatever way you interpret this question.)

i am... trying very hard not to fall into self-deprecation here. i think there are things that i do well and things that i can improve on, but even if i write something and think it's "bad" i can still learn from it. all practice is good practice!!! (said through gritted teeth)

If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write?

yea! i would find comfort in it i think, same way i do now. have my little characters for company

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy? If it’s a mix of the two, which holds the most influence?

i am my own target audience. i am the conductor of the self-indulgence train but there's room aplenty if you wanna hop on

giovanni’s room; james baldwin ★★★★★ i havent read a ton of classics (that i rmbr and/or outside of school) and im working on changing that but this one is soooo good. trust me

a place for us; fatima farheen mirza ★★★★★ hands down my fav novel ever. it hit something so deep within me i cant even think about it without feeling every emotion possible (and i do ask ppl to lie to me if they dont like it)

yellowface; r. f. kuang ★★★★☆ i only finished this a few days ago and it was very good! the social commentary might be a Little too on the nose sometimes but i think it’s needed for a lot of people considering how many (white) readers missed the point completely. only reason i didnt give it 5 stars is it’s not like... emotionally devastating like everything else on this list

sharp objects; gillian flynn ★★★★★ mommy issues galore. small town girl grows into a pathetic loser woman and for someone who loves pathetic women this was absolute gold

transcendent kingdom; yaa gyasi ★★★★★ also mommy issues galore but in a very different way. wonderful weaving of science and faith to grapple with the death of the protag’s brother

a thousand splendid suns; khaled hosseini ★★★★★ this is perhaps a basic rec considering it’s quite old but it stands the test of time and i only read it last year so it’s fresh for me and i think it’s insanely good and one of those books everyone should read at least once

luster; ravel leilani ★★★★☆ i dont actually remember a lot about this one. i read it in 2022 and it’s very very character driven so i enjoyed the prose more than anything

one day; david nicholls ★★★★★ yeah yeah everyone’s talking abt this now but it is genuinely such a gutting read. ruined me for days. it's also one of those rare ones where i would 100% recommend watching the show for as well

veronika decides to die by paulo coelho - this book is deeply flawed and kind of annoying probably but i read it as a suicidal 10 or 11 year old and was like. oh this book is my personality now. there's excerpts on my blog somewhere u can see how much of me is still this book

dead glamorous by carole morin - my first intro to sort of a styled memoir, like autofiction sort of thing, and again i deeply love this. found this book in a rotting and termite-ridden box of my estranged aunt's books that she left at our house. very heavy themes and very unreliable but funny and stylish narrator, also abt suicide. also a lot of excerpts on da blog

i love you but i've chosen darkness by claire vaye watkins - autofiction memoir as well, involves a lot of normal if disastrous life events plus vagina dentata scenes. very dense. if u look far enough in my blog u may find me trashtalking this book: i was wrong and i think it was borne out of internalized misogyny. didnt like it at first but it demanded a reread for reasons that werent clear to me and over the course of that reread i realized that i love it actually

geek love by katherine dunn - abt a family that runs a circus and theyre all fucked up on purpose. the last real book i read of this year before i Stopped Being Able To Read for reasons also unclear. loved this book!!!

no one is talking about this by patricia lockwood - starts off as a simple twitter memoir thing and then evolves into a beautiful look at Things That Are Different. abt a twitter-famous woman and her niece, a baby with proteus syndrome (elephant man). also autofiction. damn apparently i rlly love autofiction

starting with personality, id say im probably an ambivert. it really depends on who im with though! i like my alone time a lot, but at the same time i love to hang out and do fun stuff with my friends!! my parents have told me that i can be witty a lot of the time, and i do agree that i like to tease people from time to time. my friends always describe me as nice and righteous?? i guess?? they always call me smart, too, which makes sense since im in a couple ap and honors classes.. i love learning when i have a good teacher lolol ! id like to say im organized and all that stuff, but im the biggest procrastinator lol . i try to get stuff donr as soon as i can but like,, i dont want to :P my personality type is infp !

onto hobbies and interests, i love to draw, mostly sketch, both digitally and traditionally. i like to write as well, with books and essays and poetry ^_^ i loove poetry, and id say that ties with philosophy and (idk the right word) but like. just overall deep talks(i love those, especially late at night). i like to read, and im so curious about space and the universe, ive been meaning to research it! i like both cats and dogs.. honestly i dont know who i would pick if i had to choose. more fandoms wise... i like a lot of things! obviously what im most interested in rn is mm, but undertale and ohshc will always hold special places in my heart! I ALMOST FORGOT, but i love to make stuff!! charms and cards and anything i can make at home, i love to see peoples reactions when they get them:)

id say my love language is physical touch from both sides, i love to be next to the people i love, even if its just simple touches. i also love quality time, and thinking that my partner will love me no matter what

physical appearance, i just have brown hair and blue eyes, pretty typical lol ! i love to create patterns on my nails myself, and i do put on makeup very often, just simple eyeliner and slight eyeshadow, nothing major. i always get compliments on how pretty my hair is, its just long and straight and i try to brush it the best i can before it gets tangled lol . people also tell me i have a nice nose, so!

(i feel like ive written too much lolol) i dont know exactly what i want to do with the rest of my life yet, i know im knterested in the study of the human mind, so ive been considering psychology the most. still not sure though!

ros. oh my god ros. i've been on a frank mccourt kick lately and i need to talk to someone about it...my mom recommended angela's ashes to me a couple summers back and i'm more than halfway through 'tis....they never warn you about going crazy over authors cause there are so many instances where he'll kind of muse a little and it drives you crazy the way he writes it like this one bit in particular from angela’s ashes that made me want to pull my hair out the entire time about how even after being frustrated at st francis for not listening his prayers, he still loves him because that was the name given to him.

i also finished j.d. salinger's nine stories a while back and not to be that guy but. i would've been the most annoying blogger if blogs were a thing back then...anyway, what have you been reading?? i shouldn't be asking for recommendations cause i have sooo many more books to catch up on but it's fun hearing what others are reading

ive beennnnn. reading a lot of genre fiction lately ksfksdkfkd! halfway through the archive undying by emma mieko candon, which is a lush, violent, sticky mech sf that's having tons of fun playing with selfhood & beingness & worship & language... very good read.

but!!!! other than that i'm rereading moby dick my favorite book the horror novel of all time :)) what are the comprehensible terrors of man compared withe interlinked terrors and wonders of god! etc etc. + also some joseph conrad on the side... couple months ago i started black sails which put my brain in a blender (i think u would like black sails dude... even if it's not like ur usual genre i genuinely think it's just such a meticulously constructed piece of storytelling u would appreciate it.) so i've been doing a bunch of reading re: metafiction in nautical fiction in general. so of course conrad!! + ALSO today in particular some of john donne's poetry... i adore him immensely his work is so like. incandescently emotional even 500 years later it's... really compelling 2 me hhkdkfgf. anyway. hope u r doing well n having a good weekend!!! <333

ask anything? :D we talk empires n aus stuff a lot in the discord already so Im gonna ask: what were the best (and worst. if youre feeling the urge to be spiteful :3) parts of your last fandom before this? and what are the biggest difference, and similarities, between it and ur current mcyt fandoms!

Alright let's go. The fandom is The Untamed/Mo Do Zu Shi, and I will love it forever. If you've seen long hairedtruly beautiful chinese twinks in long robes in swords, it's probably then. the original source is a web novel written by an anime fic author, and I'm really into the live action version (there's also animated, comic, audio drama)

It caused me to learn a LOT about chinese culture language. Like, a lot, I tried Mandarin for a bit on duolingo but I can't even explain how much I learned about history, food, culture, forms of address, poetry, just, so much. The fandom is full of fancy smart bitches, one of my fave tumblrs is someone who majored in ancient china, and the analysis etc was just chef's kiss amazing. i wouldn't be doing chinese brush painting, and that's bringing me a lot of joy, i've never done visual art before.

I would not have learned so much about culture if it wasn't for my very tightknit group chat. I mentioned I'm on a plane to see friends? It's one of them & their spouse (who i've known since college) and one of the other people in the groupchat, who only knows them because I watched the untamed and introduced my friends. last spring us and the 4th member of the gc went on vacation together. I'm the only person who is fully monolingual, and the only one who isn't an immigrant or child of immigrants from taiwan. I've learned so much about so much of those experiences, and I didn't consider myself ignorant before, but you really need to get to know someone to understand some things (as much as you can without living it

the fic is FUCKING AMAZING. idk how many unread bookmarks i have of fic that is professional publication quality - partly because some of the authors are pro writers. I've been lucky to get to read a loooooot of fic by professional writers, cause my fandoms and ships overlapped. There is so much fic, closer to 100k than 50k i think.

i bonded with other friends by getting on calls and watching with them. i was maybe pushy lol. sadly i'm not gonna try and get anyone into mcyt

Some drama and.... discourse has become such a loaded term. But sometimes you have things like conflict that comes up between the feelings and desires of chinese diaspora and jewish people about how things are portrayed in fic, right? And it's not fighting over nothing, it's (afaik) not fighting to fight, not fighting for clout or because you want to look cool or because you're unhappy with your life and think lashing out will help.

Also, there is fighting to fight and for clout etc. If I ever see top/bottom discourse again it will be too soon, i've got enough of that to last till the heat death of the universe

translations, man. translation is an art and i am glad to know so much more about translation but it's so frustrating to know you'll never really get it, and to try and tell people things like "i know he sounds very brusque but he's speaking ina. very fancy linguistic register and sounds fancy to the other people, and the way he said all those sentences there and they were all four characters long, that's poetic and significant and and and"

I was not inspired to write in general, I wasn't getting ideas. That wasn't notable because I've never ever ever written regularly, i wrote one yuletide fic a year for awhile, i old wrote novely. I am not someone who pops into a new fandom and writes 6 fic in 2 months cause that's the kind of thing that've done in other fandoms. this is insane. And now that i have the writing bug... well, the fic is so amazing, and plentiful, i'm not going to get much attention. i just wrote an exchange fic, my first time writing in the fandom, because my mcyt fic writing encouraged me. I am glad i did it, i made my recipient happy, and it will never get as many kudos as my least popular mcyt fic. I think it has 8, and I'm happy to get that. Here's the thing, i have so many things i *can* do with my creative energies, and multiple that i do to reach and touh other people, and i'm not going to prioritize things where i know I'm not good enough to get read. It's not that i'm choosing writing vs nothing because i want people to read it, i'm choosing writing vs. other things

Comparisons

Okay i think a lot can be pretty obvious from what I said above. We don't have that much fic, we don't have canon smut, afaik we don't have pro authors - not that you have to be pro to be good! or that all pro authors are good! but they usually are pretty good.

other people i knew irl or from my long fandom past got into it. i would get ao3 fic notification from people and eagerly check to see if they'd gotten dragged in. i do not expect that to ever ever happen here. i have ventured far away from the fandoms of my past!

For me... I was a pretty normal age in the untamed fandom, and i am wicked old here. I'm an elder millennial. When I was in my 20s I met fans in their 50s, including at cons that make it really real. I don't see any reason people should drop interests cause they age??? It's bizarre and incomprehensible to me and I always wonder how people will feel when they age. I don't think there's anything inherently childish about this source, and i am happy to talk to younger people, but it's different when you know you're at a similar level of life stuff, and the privileges that come with age. i try to be careful and aware of this with my interactions with younger people. power imbalances etc and i think i do a good job. (my fandom before the untamed, that i was much more casual about, was other youtube and that was maybe even younger?)

The canon! oh my god! LOOK AT THIS SHIT. I majored in media studies and focused on fandom and what was at the time new media and this is... y'all if i was in college now i would be writing desperately about this. As a media studies person, as a larper, as someone who is obsessed with watching the ways people can express themselves and connect and stuff grow... fuck man. SMPs????? fuck yeah!!!!!! gah!!!!! catch me sober and i can be more coherent.

connecting with people has been slower, but it's picking up. <3

the untamed had so few female charaters. empires being so female is just so amazing to me, and i *am* working on f/f, it's just. the problem is jimmy, okay? no women throw themselves at jimmy, it's not *my* fault.

i can't fucking vid it. i just. can't. i can't draw and i never finished any vids for the untamed but i have so many unfinished ones. i'm not a great vidder but i love it, and not even having the possibility... it makes me sad a lot, actually. but i need facial expressions and more dynamic footage.

in conclusion fandom is great. before the untamed i hadn't been seriously into fandom in years, i've always been in and out. it was insane how into it i got. i started watching as i recovered from major surgery, and was still deep in the pandemic blues.

mcyt has unlocked creativity in me I never ever ever expected. i'm an elder millennial and i started reading fic when i was 12 and fic writing was never gonna be my thing. in 2021 i beta read over 100k words to contribute, in 2022 i started podficcing to have some creative expression of my own. my therapist and i talk about it all the time (i've been with her since i was 19, we talk about everything, and fyi what you love can say things about what's up with you and therapists know that, talk about your blorbos). I've determined i'm not getting an answer anytime soon. The medium is a lot, right, but it's more. I don't know, but I fucking love writing like this, the satisfaction, the fact that i made someone *cry* with my silly cave ranchers fic. I've made people cry a lot with my larp writing, but that intended to make them cry, not something i wrote in a fever dream in one day.

So thank you everyone who is part of my experience, it's been really great and i hope to keep being so happy and fulfilled and encouraged in my creativity etc!

Hi! Do you have any classical lit books and poetry recs? (feel free to rant as much as possible too if you want)

,YES!!!! YES SO MANY!!!!!!!!  okay so my favorite classic novel atm is crime and punishment, i really love how it gives a lot of background for what russia at the time was, and as somebody whos super interested in russian culture, i thought it was super interesting!! a midsummer night’s dream is also really great! due to it being shakespeare, its kinda a combo of poetry and prose, which i find genuinely really interesting! despite it being written a super long time ago, a lot of the characters are really funny and interesting, and theres a lot of funny moments throughout the novel this is kinda a more modern classic, but its getting more popular due to bungo stray dogs, but i reallyyyy love no longer human, its my favorite novel of all time, and it really explores a lot of existential themes. as somebody with major depression and anxiety, i can really relate to many different aspects of the novel. im super excited about its prequel (flowers of buffoonery) being translated in march!!  i havent read any of poe’s novels, but im planning on reading the black cat and the murders of the rue morgue in the near future! i love his writing style, and despite having not read those novels, i definitely recommend them due to how amazing his writing style is! poetry wise,, i love poe, as mentioned above. his writing style is,, immaculate, really. i especially love the raven, as most people do. i really recommend anything by him!! sappho has gotten popular in recent years, and her style is genuinely so amazing, because of how simple yet intricate it can be. each of her poems express such interesting ideas, and i love them all so much!! langston hughes is also really amazing!! i learned about him once in a class, and ive adored his writing style ever since then!! my favorite poem by him is most likely harlem, which is also his most popular, to my knowledge! i havent read any of emily bronte, but ive heard a lot of good things about her works! im planning on reading her novel wuthering heights very soon, and i have a lot of friends who absolutely love her style!  i could genuinely talk about this all day, but those are some recs for now :}

and oh ho ho that guy at the end of the article who came up with the whole this is such an ass and like his big shining example of how his method "works" is if a child is reading a text and says "horse" instead of "pony" it doesn't matter because they have roughly anologous meanings and the child would still be able to understand the story

now the article still debunked that with a lot of science of how the approach to reading makes it infinately harder but i can't get over the fact that his "method" completely ignores other kinds of reading comprehension other than novels and picture books !!!

like i just kept thinking while i was reading this how does someone read poetry while using cueing? like. how??? a LARGE part of poetry is phonotactics and diction and word choice so if someone reads "horse" instead of "pony" not only are they missing meaning, they are completely ignoring the poet's choices AND the poem will probably sound like shit

so much of the cueing advocates "arguments" were these bullshit condenscending takes about how all that matters is getting the meaning and enjoying reading while also gatekeeping skills for understanding an entire art medium made from words?? like if u think reading on its own is so laborious and unenjoyable then why are u teaching it???

anyway i could rant more but instead im going to take a second to be very grateful i was taught phonics in elemetary school and go read some poetry or something

uuh. Currently not that many books are in terrible conditions (not like me and my sister's old harry potter novels - in one of them the cover just fell off before i even read it lmao)

I usually try to keep my book pristine, not folding pages or breaking the spine. BUT, in the Game of Thrones (fun fact, the copy wasn't even mine, it was my sister's) i was getting so frustrated with it, i was just breaking the spine off to deal with my frustration lmao
