PhDay 111: finished in the lab yesterday and went home for Christmas

I'm going to start some online courses while I'm home: one on equations of state, which should be helpful for my data analysis, and one for teaching assistants on how to teach better I guess.

Thesis draft wordcount: 2903 (I wrote some introduction on the train home). Currently reading theses of previous students in my lab for some inspiration and ideas.

winter diaries - 21/december🍃🚙

today was kinda terrible, not gonna lie. had terrible insomnia and headaches all night, which i believe helped making me an anxious mess the entire morning and unable to do anything. honestly yesterday was also a mess which didn't help at all. so i decided (for my own peace of mind) that until monday im going to focus all of my energy on studying for my driving theory exam. which i know might sound dramatic - after all this is supposed to be a simple test that everyone above the age of 18 should be able to pass. but i know i'm tired and honestly it's an expensive exam to retake so i don't want to take any risks

it was so unexpected, but while we were at the market, we got the email that our offer was accepted, so we went to inspect the house in more detail 🔍 i'm so excited, this is our dream house we've worked so hard towards for so many years, so i hope everything goes well 🥺

a friend just tipped me off about Fund a Kitchen in Gaza, a free tool that helps you locate and donate to community kitchens currently serving some of Gaza's most vulnerable!

this lets you choose a region (south, central, north) and see which kitchens operate in that area, then donate to as many as you can.

as a reminder, community kitchens try to buy and cook in bulk, which makes ingredients last longer & sustain more people in the conditions of extreme scarcity that Israel is imposing right now. they are also able to serve people on the ground who may not have the means to reach out online.

so, whether through this tool or not, please do support community kitchens, as well as mutual aid groups that cover additional needs, such as the Sameer Project (meals, tents, cash aid, medical aid) and Dahnoun Mutual Aid (meals, tents, baby supplies, cash aid, winter clothes).

My only class of the day was cancelled, so it's officially Christmas break for me. I slept in (commuting continues to kill me), then did some reading from my molecular pchem textbook. I have two classes related to statistical thermodynamics this semester and I'm enjoying them a lot, so I just read it for my own pleasure lol. I knew these classes would be interesting - I often say the intersection of chemistry and physics is a fascinating place - but I like them even more than I thought :)

I did some thesis work too and once again it made me think of how much I enjoy working with (my) data. I miss being in the lab but this is fun too!

My therapist told me it would be good if I took a day off from work during the week, so I want to make Wednesdays my study and free time day, like I used to do in the past. It was great to have a break since I've been working so much. I woke up early and did yoga and meditation first thing in the morning. Without any distractions, it was easy to keep my house clean, and I was able to vacuum and clean my house before 9 am.

I did a very focused study session before lunch and then read a little under my tree in my backyard. It's really really hot, but it's going to rain on Friday, which makes me happy. After lunch I played Stardew Valley on my new laptop and did more study sessions while watching Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I had a 3h class today, so it was really good to study during the day because I didn't feel lost in class.

Another busy day. I’m feeling happy because my acupuncturist gave me this beautiful Christmas gift, but I’m also kinda worried about the end of the year. I wish I could stop the clock and get some rest.

I woke up early and went to my therapy appointment and then to the grocery store. I cooked lunch, cleaned my kitchen, vacuumed my house, answered some customers and prepared an order before going out for a walk. I also read my book after dinner, did dishes and played The Sims 4 while listening to my favorite tracks from EXO.

winter break diaries - 19/december

today was kinda rough. spent all morning revising data acquisition systems (ISAD). then spent the afternoon working on my wall-e robot (my poor boy looks like he's going through it, and so am i), and that completely destroyed my brain, i think it melted or smth. istg, Fusion takes years out of my life😭😭

i still tried to finish revising ISAD but honestly at one point i was just going through the words instead of actually learning anything 💀 but it's okay. first read of the slides is done (altho a bit chaotic), so now it will be easier to study in the exam's week.

I'll still study for my driving theory exam tonight. im actually pretty happy with how it's going, im finally consistently passing all the practice exams😎🚗
