a brief and informal history of unofficial team fortress
inspired by a reply i made explaining that fortress forever was developed during the interim between team fortress classic and team fortress 2.
so after the quakeworld team fortress (qwtf) devs got hired by valve, fans took it into their own hands to expand on the original team fortress formula. this post provides a brief summary of various notable TF mods for other games over the past two decades, from the first quakeworld tf mods to modern revivals of the old team fortress formula.
Mega Team Fortress (Quakeworld)
mostly an expansion of qwtf. scout has flashbangs and a jetpack, most classes can lay traps, sniper can call down airstrikes (jesus fucking christ), engineer has a mini sentry, and so on. admittedly had a hard time finding info on this one
Custom Team Fortress (Quakeworld)
each player gets cash (a la counter-strike) to customize their class with weapons, armor, and special abilities. abilities are pretty crazy like being able to summon quake enemies, give nearby teammates quad damage, and disarm enemy players.
Weapons Factory series (various games, initial version Quake 2)
as mentioned above, since the original TF team was busy working at valve, it was up to fans to continue TF into quake 2. weapons factory for quake 2 was pretty big at the time, even showing up in a french gaming magazine.
this one deviates a lot more from qwtf because it wasn't intended to be team fortress at all; it began as a simple CTF with classes mod, but later updates bumped up the class count until there were 9 of them that vaguely followed the TF class setup. the cool thing about this one is that everyone has a grappling hook.
anyways look at these class names lol it's like dollar store team fortress.
(while the analogues of which WF class is which TF class is kinda obvious, the cyborg is actually more like a mix of soldier and demo with a tf2 sapper)
weapons factory got sequels/ports for quake 3, quake 4, unreal tournament, and even half-life 2.
Quake 3 Fortress (Quake 3) and Enemy Territory Fortress (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory)
while weapons factory was enough for people to get their tf fix in quake 2 and 3, and team fortress classic came out in 1999, some people decided to make a proper team fortress for quake 3 anyways. behold, at the turn of the millennium: q3f. all the classes play similarly to their qwtf counterparts, though quake 3's physics does change the gameplay a bit.
the developers of quake 3 fortress formed splash damage in 2001, a studio that went on to work on the multiplayer components of various games like batman: arkham origins, halo mcc, and gears 5.
enemy territory fortress is a 2005 port of q3f to enemy territory wolfenstein, which ran on a heavily modified quake 3 engine. not much to say about it since it doesn't do anything particularly different from q3f.
Unreal Fortress (Unreal Tournament '99)
also coming in at the turn of the millennium was unreal fortress. abbreviated to "UnF" like the sound doomguy makes when he interacts with a wall. what stands out about unf is that engineer (sorry, "armourer") can attach a rocket launcher or flamethrower to his sentries, and non-armourer teammates could apply class-specific upgrades to them such as snipers improving sentry aim and spies adding enemy spy detection.
Quake 4 Fortress (Quake 4)
hey look, it's 2fort
there's not a lot of info about this once since it didn't have much of an audience - feels like a mod nobody asked for for a game nobody asked for. mostly takes after qwtf with extra stuff like scout having flashbangs. quake 4 fortress was abandoned in development and released in an early state with full source code.
Attackers Go Red (Quakeworld)
released in 2006, attackers go red is a qwtf mod built around one team always being on the offensive and one team always on the defensive. it also carries over some abilities from custom tf.
in the days of qwtf capture the flag a common way to play was for one team to always be attacking and the other defending (known as o/d) -- this was great because the typical push and pull of symmetrical ctf didnt really work in qwtf, so it ensured constant action for both teams involved. problem is, there was nothing enforcing this: if the "attacking" team decides to go on the defensive the gameplay slows to a crawl because now both teams are turtling instead of fighting each other, and additionally there's nothing stopping a "defending" player from going behind the other team's back and stealing their flag what with them being occupied with offense.
attackers go red solves this problem by enforcing the attack/defend split: red gets points for capturing flags, blue gets points for defending for a certain amount of time.
Fortress Forever
the thing that separates fortress forever from all the other games just mentioned is that fortress forever takes more from team fortress classic than qwtf.
didn't last very long because tf2 managed to stop being vaporware in the middle of its development and even released before fortress forever did, but it still found a small niche as a continuation of tfc's gameplay style in the source engine. has new features like scout being able to build jump pads, spy being able to turn enemy sentries against its team, and pyro being able to use their flamethrower as an improvised jetpack.
i really like the industrial aesthetic it has going on. ff demoman looking like a white tf2 demoman is a hilarious coincidence -- he's styled after the old team fortress classic demoman. menu theme is a banger.

Doom Fortress (Doom)
it's team fortress 2 for doom (specifically, the zandronum source port)! all it actually brings over is the classes; not a difficult task since zandronum already provides a class system and some gamemodes. uses assets from other 90s fps games. i love how heavy is just the doom 2 chaingunner and pyro is just doom 64 doomguy. here's germanpeter's video on it and here's an abandoned attempt to update it from 2018
FortressOne (Quakeworld)
the latest revival of oldskool team fortress, as a result fortressone has a little bit of everything. you have to reload weapons like tf2/tfc; pyro has airblast and scout has double jump from tf2; most class loadouts are closer to tfc than qwtf; tfc and fortress forever maps are available. has a small but active community on discord and is still being actively worked on. check it out here
Typical Colors 2 (Roblox)
this one's just a tf2 clone in roblox. also includes some unofficial gamemodes like versus saxton hale and randomizer
TF2 Classic
based on the tf2 beta, team fortress classic brings back features that didn't see the light of day like scout's nailgun and demoman's dynamite bundle. tf2c is more well known for its custom weapon support though: the most popular servers have hundreds of custom weapons bundled in, most of which are unbalanced in a pretty fun way. check it out here

With all of these videos with the Engineer Robot Girls making a family and killing various Spies it's inevitable we will get a sapper robot girl model: The spy makes or commissions a robot sapper for revenge and now he has an ally to fight them.
(Not mine, author unknown from Reddit, saved it years ago)
Eventually all the mercs will want their own personal robot and TF2 will turn into something like Bakugan or Gurren Lagann.

Iron Bull: Dalish don’t have templars, so they can’t have too many mages in a clan at once. Dalish: Now, ser, you know I’m not a mage! That’d make me an apostate. Iron Bull: You carry a staff, Dalish. Dalish: It’s a bow. Krem: A bow with a giant glowing crystal at the tip? Dalish: Yes. It’s for aiming. Old elven trick. You wouldn’t understand. [back to 11]
14 - Investigate: You’re a healer, Stitches? PC: I take it you’re the company healer? Stitches: Yes. First time I ever picked up a sword as when the Blight hit Ferelden. Never put it back down. Iron Bull: He makes a potion that’ll put you right back on your feet after even the toughest fight. It tastes terrible, though. Stitches: That’s because it’s a poultice, ser. You’re not supposed to drink it. [back to 11]
15 - Investigate: How’d you get here, Skinner? PC: So, how’d you join the Chargers? Skinner: Killed some people. Iron Bull: Skinner didn’t take kindly to nobles testing their new swords on the elves in her alienage. Skinner: Bull took me in. Now I get paid to kill shems. Iron Bull: This is actually really good behavior for her. She’s not marking her territory or anything. [back to 11]
16 - Investigate: Grim, what’s your story? PC: Grim, is it? Grim: (Grunts.) Iron Bull: Grim doesn’t talk much. I’m pretty sure he’s the lost king of some small country. Or a chieftain. Something like that. Grim: (Grunts.) [back to 11]
17 - General: I’m impressed. PC: You’ve got a good company, Bull. Iron Bull: Ah, we do all right. [20]
18 - General: This is quite a group. PC: You really take in anyone, don’t you? Iron Bull: Anyone who can carry their weight in a fight. Krem: And who can put up with your bullshit, chief. [20]

The Chargers lift their drinks and break out into song.
Chargers: No man can beat the Chargers, ’cause we’ll hit you where it hurts. Unless you know a tavern with loose cards and looser skirts! For every bloody battlefield, we’ll gladly raise a cup. No matter what tomorrow holds, our horns be pointing up!

I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilised society in allowing my strength, my drive and my focus – what they call Will – to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.
I tell them that I belong, and they believe me.
But the truth is that I have been sent to the Academy to find answers. To solve a murder. To search for an ancient weapon. To uncover secrets that may tear the Republic apart.
And that I will never, ever cede my Will to the empire that executed my family.
To survive, though, I will still have to rise through the Academy’s ranks. I will have to smile, and make friends, and pretend to be one of them and win. Because if I cannot, then those who want to control me, who know my real name, will no longer have any use for me.
And if the Hierarchy finds out who I truly am, they will kill me.

This was definitely influenced by social media when EVERYONE I saw was talking about how good this book was. Now, I have been burned by online recommendations before so I gave it some time, but when a couple of my friends read it and also praised it, I figured it was time to pick it up. It turned out to be my third 5-star read of the year.
The Will of the Many follows Vis, a seventeen-year-old orphan who has many secrets that he wishes to keep secret and a deep-seated hatred for the Hierarchy. Not a lot is told in the synopsis and I don’t want to spoil anything so the rest of this synopsis is going to be a bit vague. Vis is an orphan who fights for his life, literally, on the outskirts of The Catenan Republic. Most of his trouble comes from the fact that if anyone discovers who he truly is, he will be outright killed or sent to the Sappers, slabs that take all the will of the individual on it and funnel it to someone else. However, when he is unexpectedly adopted by a Senator, Vis is thrust into the unexpected political maneuvering of the Hierarchy and his new father’s desire to figure out what happened to his brother. To do that, Vis has to get into the pretentious Academy, rise through the ranks, and also do a number of things that might get him expelled or killed. Yet, more than one force is pulling for Vis to do what they want and the other one is aware of his true name and lineage. Vis has no choice, if he wants to live and stay out of the pyramid that would lead to him ceding his will, he has to be good. If he wants to live, he has to be the best.
The plot of this novel is so expansive, yet never loses focus on the main point that started VIs on this path to start with, discovering what happened to Senator Telimus's brother while he was at the Academy. Yet, soon Vis finds that other parties have put him in the path of the Senator, wanting him to work for them instead while at the Academy, and all the other plot points unravel from there. I never once found myself bored while reading this novel, always wanting to see what would happen next. It is difficult to keep up the pace and interest through an over 600-page book, but Islington does a good job of utilizing time skips to cut out of the daily grind of the Academy while still giving the reader a good idea of the world that Vis is inhabiting. I think that at times leads to some missed opportunities for character development, it is the smallest of gripes. I am truly in awe of how Islington kept weaving all these threads and brought them all to a satisfying conclusion, every twist made sense once it was revealed, and left me with more questions than answers in the end.
There was a conversation going on around Tiktok when this book started to get popular that if it had been written by a woman, it would have been considered YA instead of Adult. I thought that this was an interesting angle, numerous female presenting authors have complained that their books are misshelved or marketed as YA just because they are female-presenting. This conversation was in the front of my mind when I started reading and I could see a lot of points that people were making, Vis was only 17 and this is a coming-of-age tale in a sense taking place at a school. Islington does not hold the reader's hands and even as someone who has been reading fantasy for many years, I would have to go back to some sections and reread to make sure I was understanding and not missing something important. However, as soon as the events that led to Vis making a name for himself throughout The Cantenan Republic, any thought that this was anything but an adult novel exploded. It isn’t just the brutality of this scene, but the conversation that it starts and the way that Vis responds. There is also a tone to YA novels, even ones that are brutal, that is not seen in this novel. I wish I had better words for what I am attempting to explain because I don’t think that there is anything in this novel that a teenager couldn’t read, but this is clearly for adults.
Vis is a wonderful POV character and I came to think of him as almost like a little brother as the story progressed. He is traumatized, firm in his beliefs, stubborn, and determined, yet still at his core cares about people and wants to do what he can to keep them safe. While he grows throughout the novel, it is not a way that completely changes who he is. In fact, it is the things at Vis’s core that keep him alive in the end(s). I really fell in love with Eidhin and Callidus, but I did feel as if the female students could be fleshed out a bit more. Then again, this is a plot-driven story, not character-driven, so it didn’t affect the rating.
The ending!?! When I tell you I reread the last ten pages about three times and then thought about it in the shower to make sure I had gotten it all straight in my head. This is not a fault of the writing, in fact, it makes perfect sense given what we learn throughout the novel, but it was also so unexpected that I had to keep going back over it. This is how reveals are supposed to be done, not for shock and awe, but as a reward for following all the information placed throughout the novel. It was so satisfying and then I was SO MAD I have to wait for the next novel.
There isn’t much more I can say without spoilers, but if you have read this book PLEASE talk to me because I have theories and will forget them within 3-5 business days. This is a 5-star read and if you are into fantasy or political intrigue tales. I have no idea how this trilogy is going to end, or even where it is going, but I am so excited to go along for the ride.

I decided to arrange a mini event in RP.

The plot of the event: Several characters from our RP went to Pizza Plex for one thing, a crystal consisting of 100% remnat (the thing is canon and appeared in the books) and each has their own plans for it. But there is a problem, it is located under it, in a pizzeria from FNAF 6, and there is only one There are 4 ways to get to this location, namely the elevator from Faz blast (can hold a maximum of four characters) , the tunnel that is in the unfinished part of the Roxy races, through the sewers that can be accessed through the press to the kitchen (Gregory fell through there after the Chika broke), and through the ventilation. Hope there's no one in the basement... What's going to happen? We'll see later. (I'll tell you right away, you don't have to fight if you suddenly thought that this is a battle royale).

🇺🇦🇷🇺 EVEN WITH HIGH CASUALTY RATES, UKRAINIAN SAPPERS RETURN TO WORK CLEARING RUSSIAN MINES, REUTERS CELEBRATES.
In an article posted to Reuters by Vitalii Hnidyi, the author writes about Ukrainian sappers who have lost limbs while doing de-mining work and have since returned to the battlefield to clear more minefields.
The article celebrates the amputees of Ukraine, now in the hundreds of thousands by some estimates, a pattern we have seen frequently in Western news outlets as Ukraine's Counteroffensive failed on a massive scale.
During the 5 months of the Ukrainian Counteroffensive, tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers were killed or severely wounded, with little to no territory taken.
Now Russian Forces are back on the Offensive as Ukraine's Western allies become distracted by the conflict in the Middle East, focusing on Israel as Ukraine loses the little ground they gained during their offensive.
Still, Western news outlets try to put a positive spin on these developments by celebrating Ukrainian amputees forced back into the war by circumstance.
The Reuters article covers the experience of a Ukrainian sapper, named Andrii Ilkiv who was clearing a mine field in the Dementiivka village of the Kharkiv region in December, 2022 when a buried mine exploded, blowing one of his legs clean off.
"At first you don't feel pain, and you can use this moment of numbness to perform first aid – put on the tourniquet, before the state of shock comes over you," Ilkiv told Reuters.
"I lifted myself up, looked down, one of my legs was gone... they started pulling me out, I tried to help with my good leg, moved bit by bit and managed to get myself out without triggering two mines that were there."
But despite losing his leg, Ilkiv has returned to work as a sapper, continuing his work clearing mine fields for the Kiev regime in the Kherson and Kharkiv regions.
According to the Reuters article, Ilkiv's mine-clearing Unit, comprised of approximately 100 sappers, has seen four of its team killed, and 16 wounded by errant mine blasts.
Ilkiv told Reuters he was one of 14 sappers injured in blasts who've returned to work on prosthetic limbs to continue clearing mines, but is confident he can continue his work.
"Of course, obviously there's fear when you return, when you stand next to a minefield there's fear, but on the other hand you know that with the help of a metal detector, a sapper spade and special equipment, you can move, and conduct demining work," said Ilkiv.
Ilkiv said he told his shocked wife that there was still much clearance work to be done and that he wanted to return to sapping. "She was a bit surprised, shocked. But she has accepted it," Ilkiv said.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, some 174'000sq km of its territory is still strewn with mines and other potentially dangerous unexploded ordinances as the Russia-Ukraine conflict rages on with no end in sight.
Still, Ukraine's Western allies refuse to accept defeat, and insist the Ukrainians fight on to the last man. In pursuance of this goal, Western countries' news media faithfully publishes articles that try to put positive spin on the horrendous losses and casualties Ukraine has suffered, but little can change the facts on the ground, and the fact is, Russian Forces are on the offensive and already beginning to take territory.
One can only assume we will continue to see more articles that will attempt to illicit pitty on Ukrainian casualties while insisting the Ukrainians can still win the war.

Before the 505th battalion was thrown into action, a kind of battle group was created on its basis, which received the name 21 Panzer Brigade 21. Panzer Brigade, including two divisions of assault guns 245 Sturmgeschutz Abteilung and 904 Sturmgeschutz Abteilung, as well as a sapper company. By this time, the number of "Tigers I" increased and on July 3, when the battalion entered the battle of the village of Vesely Poselok, there were already 31 of them, and the number of Pz Kpfw III tanks was reduced to 15. Without difficulty, the Tigers crossed the Oka River and occupied a new Farm, where they found several T34 / 76 tanks abandoned by their crews. Then, in the area of the village of Butyrki, Major Savant's battle group, together with the attached infantry, broke through the defenses of 676 and 81 infantry regiments. Already being in the battle formations of the 2nd Panzer Division s. Pz. Abt. 505 on July 6, near Olkhovatka at the height with the mark 274, he collided in a fierce match with Soviet tankers covering the road to Kursk. Three Tigers were lost in the battle, which lasted 24 hours. Despite the persistence and skill shown by the tankers of the unit, its commanders abandoned the futile efforts that lasted until July 10 to break through in this direction to Kursk. The arrival of the third company on July 9 did not change the situation, and in further attempts to attack, the tanks of the 505 battalion supported other units in small groups. Two weeks later, on July 25, the unit took part in the battles that held back the Soviet troops and launched a counteroffensive to Orel. And just before being sent to another sector of the front of Army Group Center, on September 15, the battalion commander, Captain von Karlowitz, was killed.

5 Super Simple Exercise Tips
With each New Year comes the determination to begin exercising. Perhaps even you made a promise to add more exercise into your day. If your efforts at exercising are not going as well as you had planned, take a look at these tips. They might help get you back on track.
Tip #1 – Do Something You Enjoy
Exercise doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym peddling away on a stationary bike. It doesn’t mean you have to spend money on exercise gadgets you will likely never use, either. Anything you do to get your body moving is going to be better than doing nothing. Walking is an easy exercise that you can do just about anywhere, in any climate. Situbondo Bike riding, dancing, gardening, weight lifting, swimming, playing a favorite sport, house cleaning and even playing in the yard with your children are just some of the ways you can add exercise into your daily routine.
Tip #2 – Schedule Time for Exercise
As you would a meeting or a doctor appointment, sometimes the only way to make time to exercise is to put it on your daily schedule. We’ve all got busy lives and we’re often so busy taking care of others that we never seem to make time for ourselves. Once exercise becomes part of your daily To-Do list, you’re more likely to do it. Some people have only a certain time during the day available for exercise while others will have to vary the time each day. Some people need a nudge and for them, exercising with a friend is a good solution. Choose whichever way works best for you. Just remember to actually go and do it!
Tip #3 – Remember that Exercise Can Energize
Even though you might feel too tired to exercise, give it a try anyway. You might be surprised to find how energized you feel while you’re at it and afterwards, when you’re finished. Exercise is a great stress-reliever too and if you know anything about stress, you know that it is one of the body’s biggest energy-sappers.
Tip #4 – Don’t be Afraid to Mix it up
Like anything that is done over and over again, exercise can become mundane. When you get bored with exercising, you’re less likely to keep at it. To keep from getting bored with your workout routine, change it. If you’re tired of walking, try cycling. If you’re into weight lifting, try alternating this with cardiovascular exercises throughout the week. Go bowling or play a game of tennis once in a while, and if you find you enjoy these types of activities, join up with a team.
Tip #5 – Always Begin by Warming up
Regardless of the type of exercise you choose, it is very important that you begin each session by warming up your muscles. Stretching helps prevent damage to muscle tissue and it gets your blood flowing. It gets your heart pumping, too. Just five minutes is all it takes to get your exercise session off to a good start.

Ukrainian authorities are rebuilding and restoring services in the newly liberated city of Kherson, the head of the regional military administration said Saturday.
Utility companies in Kherson are working to restore critical infrastructure mined by fleeing Russian forces, with most homes in the southern Ukrainian city still without electricity and water, regional officials said on Sunday. The head of Ukrainian state railways said train service to Kherson was expected to resume this week
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday that investigators had uncovered more than 400 Russian war crimes and found the bodies of both servicemen and civilians in areas of Kherson region freed from Russian occupation.
Russia continued shelling Ukrainian cities Sunday, with Toretsk in the eastern Donetsk region coming under some of the heaviest fire, the head of the regional military administration said. The official, Pavlo Kyrylenko, said on Telegram that a hospital complex with a maternity building and a sanatarium had been shelled, but there were no casualties.

“In the Sea of Azov, the enemy continues to control sea communications by keeping one ship on combat duty, and in the Mediterranean Sea, there are 10 enemy ships on combat duty, 5 of them carrying Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo of 76 missiles,” the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Facebook Sunday.”-via CNN

"Roadblocks have been set up around and in the territory of Kherson. The regional police continue to record the crimes of the Russian occupiers," the statement reads.
"The main threat at the moment is mass mining," and 10 groups of explosive technicians are working on the detection and disposal of explosive objects, police said. "One of the police sappers was injured today during the de-mining of an administrative building in Kherson."
Police urged "local residents to follow the established rules, to move carefully around the city and not to touch suspicious objects. If you find any, be sure to report to the law enforcement officers."

A CNN team on the ground earlier this week saw heavy shelling of Toretsk and heard the hospital had been hit the previous week, as well.
