These places are not on the map,

Yet I return every night.

The extra steep frontage road

That spits you out onto the highway,

Always covered in snow.

This abandoned shopping mall

That is sometimes a hotel, sometimes a market,

Sometimes a refuge or orphanage.

This endless dessert with soft, sinking,

Rolling dunes but no sun, no warmth,

No way out.

There's a city with a ferry, I've driven

Around the coast and been on the ship,

Watched the waves, tasted the salt.

When I dream, the things I know

Merge into something new,

Somehow still recognizable.

And I have lived thousands of lives

In this unknown yet familiar world.

If you have achieved something, please remember to observe a mandatory period of basking in the warm glow of your achievement like a lizard on a stone, lest you teach your brain that effort is futile, actually, because it didn't get to enjoy its happy chemicals, so, naturally, nothing good ever comes of trying.
