Finding Bucky’s Family

Summary: Sarah tells Bucky that she found his youngest sister, Katie. But tells him it’s completely up to him if he wants to reunite with her or not.

Sarah and Sam sat on the dock, watching Bucky wrestle with AJ and Cass. Cass seemed to be happier since opening the conversation about his dad and learning more about him. Sarah took a deep breath, taking in her family.

“You good?” Sam asked.

“Yeah. I’m great.” Sarah replied, smiling. “I- uh-” Her smile melted. “I found his family.”

“You what?” Sam turned to look at her.

“Bucky’s youngest sister is still alive,” Sarah explained. “He’s got five nieces and three nephews and even more great nieces and nephews.”

“I thought he said he didn’t want to find his family.”

“No. He said he wasn’t sure, but-” She cradled her growing bump. “I want my baby to know where they come from on both sides.

“So I take it you haven’t told him yet.”

“I don’t know how.”

“Well good luck with that. I want no part in it, but if you want me to take the boys out for the day so y’all could talk about it, I will.”

“I have no clue how he’ll react.” She sighed. “I love him, Sam.”

“I know you do. And I know he loves you too, but it still doesn’t change my mind. I’m not part of this. You are on your own.”

“Screw you.” She playfully pushed him. AJ and Cass ran to them, Bucky trailing behind. “Let me guess, you guys are hungry?” Sarah asked.

“Starving!” Bucky replied.

Bucky and Sarah watched AJ and Cass loading into Sam’s truck. Bucky held her, resting his cheek on her temple.

“I think I could get used to him taking them every other weekend,” Bucky told her.

“I know.” Sarah laughed.

“So what’s the plan again? Another day to nap?”

“We have to talk,” Sarah told him.

“Is there something wrong with the baby?” The immediate panic in his voice made her eyes grow.

“No! Nothing is wrong. The baby and me are fine.” She assured him. “Don’t worry if something was wrong- God forbid- I wouldn’t wait for Sam to take the boys to tell you.”

“You can’t scare me like that.” Bucky leaned on the kitchen counter. “What is it?”

“Come on.” She grabbed his hand and led him to the living room.

“Why are you being weird?” Bucky asked, allowing her to push him to sit on the sofa.

“Remember when you said you weren’t sure if you wanted to find your family?” She asked.

“Yeah because my family is here.”

“I know and I love you. We all do, but- I took the liberty of finding your family.” She told him, watching his expression. Expecting anger.

“What does that mean, you ‘found’ them?” He asked.

“Your little sister Katie is still alive.” She explained. “Her name is Kate Johnson now.”

“I know.” Bucky’s voice was quiet. He looked down at his hands. “I- I looked up my family when I came back Stateside after- after the blip.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” She asked.

“Tell you what? That I was too much of a coward to actually go see her?” He asked. “She doesn’t live far from where we grew up.”

“You know where she lives?”

“Yeah. I-” He sighed. “I just think it’s easier if she still thinks I’m dead.”

“Why would that be easier?”

“I died eighty years ago, Sarah. In that time she mourned and moved on. I can’t just waltz back in there like everything is back to normal. She’s had a family. Kids, grandkids, great-grandkids. She has a life.”

“So did I. Do you think when Sam came back after the blip, I wasn’t happy to see him?”

“That was five years.”

“A lot happened in five years. My kids grew up. I was alone. So by your logic, Sam should have never come home.”

“That’s not-”

“See hearing from the other side, you realize how ridiculous you sound.”

“Five years is not eighty.”

“What are you afraid of?” She asked. “That you’ll show up and she won’t want to see you? Because I promise you that won’t be the case.”

“How do you know?” He asked.

“Because I know how she feels. Look at me.” She grabbed his face. ”It’s your choice in the end.”

“Why did you even look her up?” He asked.

“Because this-” She grabbed his hand, placing it on her bump. “-is your baby too. Don’t you think they have a right to get to know where you came from?” He couldn’t help but smile, placing his other hand on her bump. She sighed.

“Give me a few days to think it over.”

“No rush. Just thought I’d give you the option.”

“Thanks. I- I appreciate it.” He looked at her. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She smiled. He kissed her.

“So what’s the plan for today?” He asked.

“I don’t know about you I’m going to go nap. In the bed this time.”

“Sounds good.” He stood up, holding out his hands to help her to her feet.

Bucky and Sarah were getting ready for bed. It had been over a week since she had told him she found his sister. They hadn’t spoken about it since. But he thought about it every day and he’d made his decision.

“Since the summer is around the corner, what do you say about taking the guys on a trip to New York?” Bucky asked. Sarah smiled.

“I think they’d love that. Is this you giving me your answer?” She asked.

“Yeah. Worst case scenario she doesn’t want to see me, but I could still show you guys where I grew up.” He shrugged.

“I promise there is no way in hell she’d turn you away. You're her big brother. And I doubt she still thinks you’re dead. I mean- don’t forget the whole America’s most wanted thing.”

“Gee, thanks,” Bucky scoffed.

“And the saving the world thing.” She added. He smiled.

“Do you think Sam would be interested in joining us on the trip?” Bucky asked.

“I don’t know. It would be nice to force him into a vacation. He deserves one.”

“Yeah. I- I reached out to her son, George. She named him after my pop.” He smiled. “He said to let him know when we’re planning on the trip because he’d pick us up from the airport.”

“That’s great. The boys are going to be so excited. They’ve never been fo New York.”

“We can take them to Coney Island. They reopened a new Luna Park. The old one burned down in ‘44.” He explained.

“Did you go to the original one?” Sarah asked, hoping to keep him talking about the past since he rarely did.

“Yeah. My pop took us when he could. We’d always get a hot dog from Nathan’s. Can you believe Nathan’s is still open after all these years?” He smiled at the memories. “I wish you could have seen the lights of the old Luna Park. It was amazing. Most incredible thing I ever saw until the Expo. When Stark showed off the first flying car.”

“You saw the first flying car?”

“Yeah! I mean it failed after being in the air for a few seconds, but it was-” His smile melted. “That was my last night Stateside before the war. The last time I saw Steve when he was just Steve and not Captain America.”

“I like hearing about back then.” She told him.

“I ever tell you how I met Steve?” He asked.

“No.”

“We were both kids and he was getting picked on by some local bullies. Assholes, all of them. Steve was the smallest kid so of course that made him a target.” He scoffed. “But no matter how many hits Steve took, he never backed down. The first time I saw it, I thought of my brother Davy who was small. Thought if someone was picking on him, I’d want to be there to kick their teeth in. So I got in the middle of it.” He laughed. “One of the kids told me I should mind my business, so I made it my business. The leader of their little gang was this prick named Henry. I knocked him on his ass so hard, they never messed with Steve again.”

“How old were you?”

“Ten? Eleven? I don’t know. I just remember bringing Steve to my folks place for dinner. My mom had a cow over our bloody faces.” He laughed. “He became my brother after that. Me and Steve were inseparable until the war.”

“That sounds adorable.” Sarah smiled. Bucky looked at her. “Thank you for telling me about it. I know talking about the past isn’t your favorite thing.” She kissed him. “I love you, Buck. You know that right?”

“Yeah. And I love you too.” He smiled. Bucky had never imagined this life for himself, but he was grateful.

As someone who hadn't watched Civil War before the miniseries, I was fascinated by the tangible shift in Zemo's demeanor in this scene. Like, "Oooh he ain't playing now." ...and man was it sexy.

I just finished watching Falcon and the Winter Soldier and,,,, that scene in the last episode where Bucky is watching Sam give the speech? All that is going through his brain is: "The head I am going to give this man later, holy shit"

just rewatched tfatws and.. damn this show is really slept on i feel like. i mean they did a pretty good job of making critiques of the us military, the government’s use of the term ‘terrorist’, the fact that a black man being captain america holds a lot more weight than a white man doing so (but also constantly proving that sam is absolutely worthy of holding the title), and it gives both sam and bucky plenty of screen time both together and separately. also karli was a really convincing antagonist because the only times i found myself disagreeing with her was when she chose to sacrifice lives for her cause, but the cause itself was understandable. like idk i think they cooked up a very solid show but it really didn’t get the recognition it deserved, probably because people were expecting a buddy cop comedy or something
