Winter break is coming to an end but it was really, really nice. Lots of time resting and doing personal reading... which I've re-realized is completely different than school reading!
I've really reconnected with the parts of life I've been missing and I hope to retain that once the semester begins.
Last semester of my undergrad... wish me luck!

How to Find a Martial Arts Teacher? Anti-scam Non-exhaustive Guide
I lacked the enthusiasm for full-scale opus; however, I would like to list several criteria regarding the choice of MA teacher. There are subtle signs that should alert you before you waste your money, time and health.

Stede Bonnet, Renaissance Man (Or an Exceptional Man who Thinks He’s Mediocre)
I’ve posted before about Stede’s love of beauty. He’s an aesthete, finding wonder in art and creative self-care rather than the transcendental. Stede’s a freethinker. He challenges the orthodoxies of his time, rejecting forced heteronormative behaviours, and even questioning the accepted traditions of piracy.
The thing about Stede is he often asks ‘why?’ It’s partly what makes him dangerous to some. This slant towards subversion is much of what Izzy observes and detests. It’s one of many reasons Stede must be kept from Ed. Like a number of Renaissance-style thinkers before him, Stede refuses to go along with the status quo. He is ‘doing something original’, questioning dogma. Many find it ridiculous, bizarre even. And it’s significant that instead Ed finds Stede enchanting, because it demonstrates who Ed might be given the chance to find his own path.
Stede is also a polymath and likely an autodidact - I doubt he learned about ‘insane foliage’ at school. He is self-motived and seems to have knowledge across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Literature, drama, botany, entomology, psychology, art, textiles. Stede’s very much about the life of the mind.
And he’ll approach areas at which he’s not so gifted, such as cartography and sword-fighting, with the enthusiasm of a dilettante; when he can’t succeed the traditional way, he simply subverts the discipline and does it his own. However, the most important thing for me in defining Stede as a Renaissance man is his humanism. People are front and centre. Sometimes that person is himself, and he loses sight of others. But it’s okay as that’s the point. Humanism is partly about being a messy individual who can do better. And Stede is someone who can learn and alter his position when circumstances change. He might not do so in the best way all of the time, but he is a quick-learner and highly-adaptable.
Stede also understands that no culture or institution is bigger than the people within it. The most important thing is human dignity - it’s what he shows and teaches Ned’s crew: that they deserve to be respected as people. Stede also has a strong moral core. When he messes up, he feels it deeply. He demonstrates strong ethics towards the natural world too - he’s absolutely disgusted by turtle vs. crab. Stede believes not so much in human superiority, but human responsibility, and this is the flip side of having dignity as a human being.
Another aspect of Stede’s humanism is his belief that culture should be accessible to all. Some of this might be naivety on Stede’s part rather than a well-thought out philosophy, but he believes in it intuitively. Stede wants the crew to have access to his library despite not recognising they can’t all read. He gives them musical instruments and sports facilities - he’s interested in what makes people flourish. And Stede practically invents art therapy!
His ship is also a safe-space for human relationships to blossom - romantic, platonic, and in between. Zheng’s ship might appear to offer collective harmony, but it’s mandated and dogmatically applied. Opting out of morning tai chi for a 24-hour shagathon might be viewed as an act of dissent. No such big brother is judging you on Stede’s Revenge.
And all of this is because of the man Stede is, and the influence he has on those around him. Sometimes it falls on deaf ears. Many don’t like what Stede’s offering. Others actively rebel against it. But anyone with an ounce of goodness will get what Stede Bonnet is about and embrace it. Stede doesn’t seem to understand his own power, it comes from such an authentic place. For me, it makes him all the more endearing.

Did you research any sort of martial arts when choreographing the action/fight scenes of your comic, especially in regard to Tess and Falst? I've just been noticing Tess's affinity for grappling as opposed to Falst's preference for kicks and knee-strikes. I suppose this question extends to Dainix and Kendal's martial styles too.
Didn't really research it, but I've got some experience with a few martial arts and a basis in gymnastics that I draw on for the choreography.
Tess's style is almost entirely centered on her arms - her legs just get her where she's going. She's so durable that she can get away with a lot of reckless fighting, and her lightning magic lets her launch herself around at high speeds. I choreograph her with a lot of very wide stances, very drawn-back shoulders and a focus on punches or grabs. It's not a style anyone trained in real martial arts would use - even boxers keep a closed stance and protect their face and head. Tess's hands are rated E for everyone.
Falst is a gymnast with a leg up in the strength department, meaning he can launch his body weight around in a way only the smallest, densest real gymnasts can. I, like many gymnasts, reached the point where I was too tall and too heavy to fling my body weight around on arm strength alone, but Falst can get away with a lot more physics-defying tricks. Kicks are good because they keep your opponent away from your head, and his fighting style is fluid and defensive, based on quick bursts of violence followed by quick escapes - but when he's angry and off-balance he stops thinking straight and gets too into the Fight with not enough Flight.
Kendal has the muscle memory of a very dangerous warrior, but typically chooses not to use it. Every action he takes is deliberate and methodical. His fighting style is usually about how long it takes him to choose to actually start fighting. I'm actually currently learning some historical swordfighting schools, in part so I can make his weapons choreography more interesting.
Dainix is the closest to a regular human in the bunch, so his fighting style draws the most on my own limited experience. I had a good amount of unofficial tutelage in tai chi, a very soft martial art whose core movements can be fairly easily modified to integrate weapons - one of the more interesting I found being a staff. Dainix has to be versatile and mobile, but he can't leap ten feet in the air or tank any hits that are too heavy, which means his mobility mostly involves running or shoulder-rolls. His spear style is an extrapolation of the basic staff forms I played with in tai chi, which has a fluid movement and involves a lot of turns and redirection of force. Using a staff, I found the movements became wide arcs, often pivoted around the waist to build up momentum. Dainix circles his problems and tries to find the correct angle to strike. The exception is when the Crucible flares up, an anger-driven weapon of brute force that charges problems head-on.

Marinette’s Sport of Choice
Hey everyone! I’m having trouble deciding what school sport would choose to participate in. Here are my ideas and why! (And also some concept art I was playing around with, they’re real messy)
1. Ballet/Dance
Grace/balance will help with the dance-like fighting style she has
She liked dancing (in her room) in the series, even though she wasn’t well coordinated
Possibly offered at her highschool?
2. Fencing
In the show, she expressed an interest in fencing
Fencing could help her fighting as Ladybug
Probably offered through her highschool
3. Gymnastics
Same thing as dance - Grace/balance will help with the dance-like fighting style she has
Probably offered through her highschool
4. Tai Chi
Meditative defensive martial arts that originated from ancient China
Could take it with her mother to reconnect with her roots
Balance and self defense would help her improve her skills as ladybug
Anyway, I like all of these options!! I’m also considering selecting more than one or having Marinette transition between a few.

We Are Worthy
Greetings my friends, and yes that is the old poet in living color. I hope everyone is well today. I was thinking about my be good to yourself posts from two or three months ago, and decided I needed to remind myself how good life actually is and how blessed we all truly are. After making some growth producing changes, you could accurately state that I was indeed comfortably perched atop my own personal pink cloud, which is a 12 step phrase generally describing the emotional state of someone who just turned their lives around one way or another. Well I must admit that was quite a wonderful feeling, and I truly enjoyed sharing positive thoughts and words with my friends here and at work, but then life seemed to throw in a monkey wrench as life is ofttimes wont to do. May came along and after almost 42 years as a computer programmer it was obviously time to retire, even though I probably wouldn't have made the decision on my own, my company graciously assisted me by kicking my butt out the door. For the first couple of weeks I was pretty shook up. I mean, I've never been retired before. What was I supposed to do? Miracously it turned out to be a blessing in disguise by forcing me to keep both my mind and body busy. I've taken care of some admittedly confusing yet necessary financial updates, and with all the time on my hands, I've been taking several walks a day, meditating, and watching Thich Nhat Hanh and Plum Village Videos on my computer. That was a good start, but I still had too much time on my hands and needed to take action. I first started by checking my Medicare Provider and found out that they would pay for a gym membership. I went over the next mornning and got a full membership, and I have really enjoyed it for about three weeks now. I had been trying to find a place for Buddhist Meditation or a Temple with very little luck, and by coincidence (if you happen to believe in such things, which I do not), I found a martial arts school which teaches Tai Chi. After a little more digging I discovered the teacher was from the same Chinese Boxing Lineage that I had studied with over 30 years ago. It's a small world indeed, but wait, it gets even better. I found out that my insurance would pay for the Tai Chi Class as well, and yes I signed up immediately. I apologize if this post is selfish, but it felt good to write, and maybe there is a small moral to the story. Yes everything is going surprisingly well for me, and while I'm very grateful to God, Love, Grace or whatever you wish to call it, I'm partially in this very enjoyable position because I've done what I needed to do. Admittedly I haven't always done very well with that part of it, but maybe I am deserving of my best, aren't you deserving of your best? That's about all for now, but please remember, you are indeed worthy of good things. Love to all, Mike 🩷
