very strange phenomenon now that many people have learned online not to pet service dogs is that they walk by little bird and me, wave their hands at little bird, and say in a baby voice "oooohh you're so cute! you're so cute! i'm not going to pet you because i know you're working! ooohhhh puppy puppy puppy, i want to pet you but i'm not allowed~" and i have to tell them what they're doing is literally as distracting as petting her. this happens almost every single time i'm out with her.

Watched a great video essay by super eyepatch wolf recently on social anxiety horror and I'm thinking about how that's a side of the Stranger we don't really talk about as much. Yeah creepy mannequins are creepy and the uncanny valley is fun but what about being treated like a stranger by people you thought were your friends. I think the not-them statements do this in a very fun and scary way by inserting a stranger into your life that everyone says you should know. But what about the opposite, where you think you should know someone but they act like you don't, and they make you look like the weirdo in front of everyone.
