Having now seen several episodes of season three, WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL WERE THEY THINKING WITH THE COSTUMES. WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?
First two seasons? Beading. Embroidery. Regency silhouettes. Costuming talent.
Season three looks like they put everyone in cheap prom dresses from JC Penny and then got fanciful. I gave two words for you: PLASTIC SEQUINS.
Ugh. Where are all the costume design nerds who were geeking out about Game of Thrones vs Tolkien adaptations a while back? I need to commiserate.

Okay yeah, we all ate a lot on Christmas day - but nobody ate as much as Ncuti Gatwa.

GUUUUURL
In the club? Devoured. Absolutely scoffed. He is a neat eater because he left not a single crumb.
Dashing across the snow as his coat billows out!? THE MOMENT. THE DRAMA.

This is peak. The outfits are peak. I don't even care about the plot because the Doctor's wardrobe will be to die for.

Can we talk about this and agree that it's Garak's best outfit?

Reblogging for Grey Redux.

One Dress a Week Challenge
June: Grey
Suits (episode 312, "Yesterday's Gone") / Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson
I find the design of this dress fascinating. Vertically-placed asymmetrical elements were a thing in the early 2010s--the character wears another dress with a similar layout in the same episode, or see Sophie's white dress from Leverage (2011) for another example. The flap and tab on this dress manage to suggest a jacket and belt in a sort of shorthand or minimalist way. It's entirely appropriate for office wear at a major law firm, conservative and innovative at the same time. The necklace and bracelet add some discreet contrast.

It's almost official: the Murdoch Quilt, made from costume scraps from seasons 12-14 of Murdoch Mysteries (with a few pieces from earlier years), is going up for auction very soon! Bidding will close on not long after October 2, the date of the S17 premiere. I even managed to get a high-end art auction house involved. I had a Zoom call with them and the Shaftesbury Films publicity people this afternoon to finalize plans. (Yes I am freaking out about this.)
Christina Jennings, Founder, CEO, and President of Shaftesbury Films gave the quilt and the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, beneficiary of the auction proceeds, a shoutout in her speech to the crowd at the Shaftesbury TIFF party last Monday. (She suggested that someone's grandmother might like it. Me, I want it on permanent display somewhere. It's a work of women's art that was never intended to disappear into someone's linen closet. But that was, uh, not the ideal venue for pushing that argument. Ahem.)
Some of the "best" questions people have asked about the quilt:
How do we know it's authentic? Are you trying to scam people?
Seriously? You honestly think someone would come up with a scam involving the time and coordinated effort of 20 people in three countries to produce something that has fabrics that look EXACTLY like what's in the costumes on TV, in order to raise money for a 48-year-old anti-racism charity? That's... rather a grim way to perceive the world.
2. Why don't you sell the pattern so other quilters can make it too?
There is no pattern. 18 people designed and made their own unique blocks from the fabrics they had available. If you want to stare at pictures of it to reverse-engineer the 30 different blocks so you can make them from other fabrics that didn't come from the MM costume room, knock yourself out.
3. You're making another one, right?
No. This one took hundreds of dollars (gas, postage, longarm quilting) and at least 150 hours of work. "One of a kind" means "one of a kind."
(I have so many thoughts about how textile art is [or isn't] valued, and whom it's perceived to be for, even by people who really should know better. I'm hopeful that this project and the auction will spark some thoughts and conversations about this. Best case, the quilt itself will net five figures, maybe from one of the Bus People who've been on the fancy tours and who Get It about what this kind of fibre art is worth. I can dream, can't I?)
Anyway. Auction closes in early November! October 2! More details coming soon! aaaah!

The third elegant ensemble in "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a gorgeous mint green beaded tabard over a light chiffon underdress.
Worn far too briefly when Phryne arrives late to her evening with Jack, this incredible beaded tabard is an original vintage 1920's piece, with green silk net and luminescent sequins and bugle beads used to create stunning patterns and lines, as well as shimmering flowers along the waistline and back hem. As seen in the costume exhibition, the tabard is a singular piece of fabric, with a hole for the head and stopping mid-back. Silver metallic lines connect the sides and also attach the fluttering sleeves - made of the same chiffon as the underdress - to the tabard.
The tabard was purchased for the series from a dealer in the US, and is a great example of both the benefits and pitfalls of using vintage outfits. Marion Boyce, the costume designer, and her team had to remount the original tabard onto stronger, modern fabric in order to keep the piece intact.
"[The fabric] was far, far too fragile. We found a matching silk tulle that wasn't going to change the texture of the piece. It was important that it did not overpower the tulle backing that was originally used. We then dyed it to match the color, in this way retaining the intent of the original designer." - Marion Boyce, Costume Exhibition
Phryne complements her look with a large curved jeweled hair slide, seen in the promotional photos for the dress worn in the season opener, and silver chandelier earrings. She also accessorizes with a diamond bracelet, a silver ring with a white flower in the center, and her glittering silver heels, worn in the first episode of the series.
Season 3, Episode 1 - "Death Defying Feats"

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Silver Redux
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (s1 e6, "Ruddy Gore") / Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher
This stunning dress is referred to as the "Silver Lady" by @phrynefishersfrocks, who did a terrific writeup of the whole outfit with lots of attention to the coat and headpiece. For this post, however, I'm focusing on the dress itself. The material is just amazing! I've included a closeup to show the texture, embroidery, and beadwork.
Phryne seems to favor this sort of asymmetrical neckline. Compare with the purple dress from "Murder on the Ballarat Train," which has a mirror image of the construction.
By the way, here's what Miss S wore in the equivalent episode ("The Haunted Theatre").

The funniest part about making Star Trek OCs is making the uniform shit even more confusing. Yes, by 2301 the Federation used red jackets. But what if my OCs all wore the TOS style but slightly different, like 30 years after they started using the jacket design????
People who don't know Star Trek fashion are probably baffled rn
