The third outfit Phryne wears in "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is a gorgeous blue and purple coat with a matching purple cloche accented with blue floral embroidery.
The star of this outfit is the beautiful chinoise coat made of black silk with midnight blue damask floral designs and purple silk trim on the pockets and her lapped sleeve cuffs. Her coat is lined with purple silk, and has a standing mandarin collar with a single hidden closure at the waist. Marion Boyce, the costume designer, added cut out elements from original 1920's silk embroidery, attaching two large blue flowers to the left shoulder, as well as one on her hat. She finishes off her look with a blue silk organza floral brooch pinned to her shoulder.
Her accompanying cloche is a matching purple felt with a tight molded brim and decorative swoop near Phryne's left cheek, along with one of the silk embroidered flower motifs also seen on her coat.
Underneath her coat, Miss Fisher wears her dark blue camisole with small scalloped trim on the straight neckline, along with her navy blue wide leg silk faille pants. She accessorizes with a bag made of the same fabric as her coat, long teardrop earrings, and a large purple amethyst and diamond ring.

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Silver Redux
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (s1 e6, "Ruddy Gore") / Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher
This stunning dress is referred to as the "Silver Lady" by @phrynefishersfrocks, who did a terrific writeup of the whole outfit with lots of attention to the coat and headpiece. For this post, however, I'm focusing on the dress itself. The material is just amazing! I've included a closeup to show the texture, embroidery, and beadwork.
Phryne seems to favor this sort of asymmetrical neckline. Compare with the purple dress from "Murder on the Ballarat Train," which has a mirror image of the construction.
By the way, here's what Miss S wore in the equivalent episode ("The Haunted Theatre").

The first stunning outfit of "Death Defying Feats" (Season 3, Episode 1) is a gorgeous draped navy blue sheer fabric with a silk underdress with a single dramatic sleeve attached with a jeweled bracelet, topped with a matching feathered headpiece.
Suitably sensational for the season three premiere, Phryne appears in a tabard made of French navy lace and dark beads creating floral and leaflike patterns. "The fabric in this tabard is simply stunning - it does all the work," Marion Boyce commented in an interview with the Guardian. A 'tabard' simply means a rectangular sleeveless piece of fabric covering only the front and back. The fabric connects on the side with beautiful diamond tabs. Underneath she wears a bias cut midnight blue slip with a straight neckline. An additional triangle of fabric attached to her wrist by a gem encrusted bracelet serves as both a sleeve and a cape as Phryne wafts through her scenes.
Miss Fisher complements her look with a headpiece made of a plume of dark feathers, as well as silk navy gloves and bejeweled blue t-strap heels. Her diamond earrings each have two angled lines holding a large gem between them. To finish it off, as she travels to the theater, Phryne dons a luxurious brown fur wrap with red silk lining to keep warm.
We see this ethereal gown not just in the first episode of season three as she's preparing for a night out with Jack, but also in a large series of promotional photos, worn instead with a curved jewelled hair slide with gems set on slender wires.
Screencap from here, promotional photos from the official Facebook (x, x, x, x) and various sources (x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x), exhibition photos from Dayna's Blog, Nikki Johnson's Flickr, and footprintsandfotos Flickr, behind the scenes photos from Pinterest (x, x).

One Dress a Day Challenge
July: Green Redux (+ Blue Redux)
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (s3e1, "Death Defying Feats") / Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher
This mint-green dress has a very interesting construction: it is called a tabard dress, with sleeve-frills attached by ropes of beads, worn over a base dress of the same material as the "sleeves." When it was exhibited in 2015, it was described as "1920’s green silk net with luminescent sequins and bugle beads"--which sounds like it may be a vintage piece.
This episode is quite the source for Miss Fisher costumes, as it also included Dot's orange dress and Phryne's midnight blue dress with the lace overlay. I'm also including a nice shot of the crescent-shaped hairpiece--from the front, as the side shot is out of focus.

my friend asked me for murder show recs and i put together a list of a bunch of them and thought i'd also share it here in case anyone else who was not raised by the glow of mystery! on pbs might want an intro. extremely subjective commentary, obvs. enjoy.
hello. welcome to the world of finding television shows about people getting killed comforting. it's fucked up, but who isn't. here's a list of the ones i like and why and where to watch them.
midsomer murders (1997-current): this is one of those sterotypical "it ran for 25 years and did nearly 18 episodes" british shows. it was adapted from a book series, which are the early eps. they're really fucked up and great imo. the later ones lose that sharpness, but until seasons 20+ i think it's a really solid show. the theme song is performed on a theremin. pluses: every great british actor shows up at least once, incredibly great deaths, lots of hyper niche hobby groups, tom barnaby is the best. minuses: showrunner brian true-may quoted as saying that his version of "english countryside" is entirely white. he was booted from the show at that point, however. i've watched the entire series 2-3 times, except for s5e3 "Ring Out Your Dead" because there's a death in it that i found particularly tragic the first time i watched it and have no desire to revisit it (but ymmv). robyn's fave ep is s3e3 "Judgement Day," because a brass band plays the show's theme song at a village fete and also Orlando Bloom is run through with a pitchfork. (ACORN)
Poirot (1989-2013): truly the goat. David Suchet bodies this role. i don't know how familiar you are with christie, but hercule poirot was her recurring detective character, a fastidious little belgian living in 1930s England. in this show, it's the late 1930s for 20 years, and the sets and costumes are so good. not a single streamline moderne property in england is overlooked. the early episodes are short--40ish minutes each--but they transition to 90 minutes at some point. they adapt all of the poirot books, with the big ones--murder on the orient express and death on the nile--done as higher budget tv movies. (BRITBOX)
marple (2004-2013): another christie adaptation, with 2 actresses playing miss marple in sequence. they also adapted a bunch of non-marple stories to have miss marple in them. set post-WWII, mainly countryside english mysteries. (BRITBOX)
miss fisher's murder mysteries (2012-2015, film in 2020): set in 1920s melbourne, mfmm follows independently wealthy private eye phryne fisher. it's an adaptation of modern novels, so it's less conservative than the christies. phryne's best friend is a suit-wearing lesbian doctor. it's a sharp, smart show, and phryne herself (as well as her relationship with buttoned-up detective jack robinson) is very sexy. it ran three seasons and was followed by a crowd-funded film in 2020, which isn't GOOD, but it is FUN. there's another a spin-off set in the 1960s called miss fisher's modern mysteries, which follows phryne's niece. again--not good, but fun. nothing beats the og series tho. (ACORN)
lewis (2006-2015): this is technically a spin-off of the inspector morse series, which started in the 80s, but i've never watched it so you should be fine. this follows very un-academic inspector lewis and his very academic assistant DS hathaway in EXTREMELY academic oxford england. i really dig the pacing of this, as well as how profoundly weird smart people can be. the big downside is the actor who played hathaway is laurence fox, who's a real stinker of a dude. right-wing, racist, etc. so. ymmv. (BRITBOX)
vera (2011-current): vera is a nearly retired, irascible, set in her ways detective in northumberland. she heads her own department, so part of the appeal is definitely trim youngsters dashing to do her bidding with a "yes mum." she drives a huge old land rover, wears a raincoat everywhere, has no patience for class barriers, and in short i love her. in the newer seasons there is also a detective in her squad called Jaq who is a very cute butch. (BRITBOX)
dalgliesh (2021-current): adaptation of pd james novels following detective-poet adam dalgliesh. set in the 1970s, which sets it apart and which i quite enjoy. his character is really sensitive and thoughtful is a way that's unusual for cop shows. (ACORN)
annika (2021-current): i'm gonna dive into some of the weirder ones now. annika is still pretty serious, but the title character has a habit of breaking the 4th wall to loop the audience in on the meta nature of her thoughts--usually relating to a book or story. it's set in glasgow and they investigate marine crime specifically. annika is played by nicola walker, who full disclosure i find VERY attractive. she's norwegian, she's odd, and she's trying her best. she has a teenage daughter who's gay. (PBS)
queens of mystery (2019-current): this one is VERY odd. think british murders meets pushing daisies. there's a narrator, and occasional technicolor flights of fancy. it follows a very serious detective who was raised by her three aunts after her mother was killed. she comes back to work in her home town and has to navigate both sides of her life, plus still wanting to know who killed her mother. production was interrupted by covid, so the main actress changed between seasons, but the new person is also very good. (ACORN)
brokenwood mysteries (2014-current): this one is sort of...sillier than the rest? it's a new zealand show set in a small town. it's fairly queer (although not nearly queer enough), and one of the things i love the most about it is it maintains a roster of recurring characters (which i think is only possible because of the small size of the NZ film industry). pretty good maori rep, especially jared, a local who seems to know or be related in some way to everyone in town. i adore him. he's off the show now, and i miss him. (ACORN)
mcdonald & dodds (2020-current): set in bath, this is an odd couple partnership of an ambitious young cop lately from london and a shy older cop who has lived in bath all his life and hasn't seen action in a decade. their interactions are funny and lovely, and it's refreshing to see a black woman character allowed to be ambitious. (BRITBOX)
#took out the julie mentions left in the robyn mention#because their love of a tv show playing its theme song on the show is so funny and i love it#gentle murders#this is like. half the length this list could have been#and that's not even getting into the mini-series

tww drabble exchange team! i have here a list of media that i’m very fond of for secret drabble purposes (i.e. any hallowe’en costumes or maybe crossover if you can make it work?? some of these are definitely here for costume purposes only). i realise that not everyone knows all the stuff i’m into and i don’t even talk about all of these on a daily basis. i hope you can find some common ground so we can be unwell about these characters together! you can go with a very subtle reference or like a full-on whatever your brain comes up with, as per my chaos request
you can use these however you wish—individual characters as costumes (or random crossover)—or couples costumes. ship them cross-media if you like??? with media that contains m/f, cross-dressing is very welcome unless stated otherwise (in which case i probably don’t want the male character(s)). anywhere i’ve put a ship name, assume the individual characters are up for grabs too
i’ve probably forgotten something, so if you’re like, what about _?” send me an anon and i’ll let you know if it’s something i like or don’t mind receiving a reference for!

Hi! 13 or 27 for the Rook Story Time prompts, if you want!
13. Rook visiting a place they love.
After she took her seat, Phryne closed her eyes, letting the familiar sounds and sensations wash over her. The orchestra tuning their instruments, the indistinct chatter of the gathered audience; the luxurious feel of the upholstered seats — velvet, imported directly from Orlais, and just as plush as she remembered.
She heard a low chuckle. Opening her eyes, she saw Emmrich settle into the seat beside her. He was dressed even more finely than usual, trading his professorial coat for a more formal suit, to match the upscale environs they were now in. Phryne herself was wearing a fine dress of sumptuous black silk, and as a rare treat, most of her grave gold was on display.
“Something funny?” she asked. “The performance hasn’t even started yet.”
“Not funny,” he clarified, smiling. “Rather, I’m charmed. You seem so content here.”
She returned his smile, then directed her gaze to the grand sight before them. From their balcony seats, they had an impressive view of the entire Royal Nevarran Theater. It was packed tonight, the crowds clamoring to see a rare treat: a brand new, original production from a famous yet reclusive playwright.
“I was eight the first time I came here,” she spoke softly. “Mother took me to see a performance of The Lady and the Dragon Hunter.”
Emmrich raised an eyebrow, though he looked more amused than anything else. “Many would not consider that particular piece appropriate for a child. As I recall, it’s a bit… convoluted.”
“Mother was confident in my ability to understand the deeper themes and symbolism,” Phryne sniffed, adopting a haughty expression that earned another laugh from her beau.
“And did you?”
Her imperious look dropped, in favor of an impish grin. “Eventually, after a few repeat viewings. At first, I was just dazzled by the dancers, the sets, the costumes… the, dare I say, theatricality of it all.” Phryne sighed dreamily. “I begged my mother to take me to another show practically every month.”
“And thus, the start of your lifelong infatuation with the theater.” Emmrich hummed thoughtfully.
“Meaning, as far as dates go, you picked the perfect place, handsome.” Phryne leaned over and gave him a quick kiss. Though it was little more than a brief touching of lips, and they’d done much, much more than that before, heat rose to Emmrich’s face and he looked entirely too pleased with himself.
“Yes, well…” he cleared his throat. “I confess I cannot take all the credit. I did ask your daughter for ideas…”
Phryne’s grin grew wider. Her daughter Elke was once Emmrich’s student, and so the topic of his relationship with her mother was still an awkward one to broach. That he’d done so to plan a perfect date both amused and charmed her. But before she could ask how that conversation had gone, the lights all around the theater had dimmed, and the orchestra began to play a rousing opening number.
Her attention snapped to the stage as she leaned forward in her seat, eager to see a show in her favorite theater after being away for over a year. So rapt was she that she failed to notice Emmrich’s fond, adoring smile centered on not the stage, but Phryne herself. She did, however, feel his hand slip into hers, their fingers entwining.
She squeezed his hand. Later, she would thank him properly for this little treat of an evening, a much needed distraction in the hectic maelstrom that had become their lives as of late.
But for now, the actors had taken to the stage, and Phryne let herself feel eight years old again, enjoying the magic of the theater as if it were the very first time.

Miss Fisher Snippets (158)
Happy birthday, Miss Marion! Thank you for being our very special guest at the Miss Fisher Con 2023 in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. Your geniuses, graciousness, and generosity are eternally appreciated by the fandom.
The quote of Marion is from the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Costume Exhibition, Series 3, catalogue. She is known to have used materials from her personal collection on the show, from rare fabrics to vintage coats or jewelry. During the interview for the exhibition, she said that “once I actually use something, even if it’s actually my own (as in something I wear – either clothing or jewelry), I can never, ever wear it again once it goes on an actor as if then it belongs to them and it’s no longer mine. So I have to really like the person or the show to actually be able to hand it over.” We are really lucky that she has such a great love for Phryne and adores Essie that she shares her precious pieces with the show and the world.

Exciting Con News !

We are beyond thrilled to announce that the amazing Marion Boyce will be joining us at Miss Fisher Con in St. Paul, Minnesota!
Marion designed the costumes for all three seasons of the original Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries TV show, and her genius at historical style and attention to detail were instrumental in igniting the fans’ passionate love of the show.
With designs that incorporated vintage pieces, hand-built millinery, and a distinct “look” for each character, Marion won an AACTA Award for Best Costume Design in a Television Series for series 2 and she was nominated again for series 3. Read about all of her accomplishments on our website, and get excited!
And if her professional credentials aren’t enough, she’s also amazingly kind and welcoming - she opened her Melbourne studio to more than 30 Miss Fisher Fans in early 2020 for a tour and tea. Those who attended were able to get up close and personal with many of Phryne’s things, including the black satin fighting cocks kimono and the break-in beret. Iconic!
We are so looking forward to to chatting with Marion, and we hope you are too.
We’ll see you there!

Phryne fashion tournament: looks one to eight
All credit for research on these wonderful costumes goes to @phrynefishersfrocks.
All caps from here.
Looks nine to sixteen available here.
1. Gold sequin gown (Framed for Murder)
[Image ID 1: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne is shown from the waist up wearing a gold sequined dress in her home. The dress has a wide neck with diamond ornementation. She has accessorised with a gold headpiece in a leaf design and dangly gold earrings. She holds a drink with an orange slice in her left hand. /End ID]
[Image ID 2: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne is shown from behind talking to some smartly dressed men in her parlour. Her gold sequin dress has a low, scooped back and her upper back is highlighted by three delicate gold chains strung across it. /End ID]
Our first look of the tournament is Phryne's gold sequin dress from Framed For Murder's dinner party scenes. It has a wide neckline, the low back scoop accented by three gold across her bare upper back.
2. Duster with hat and red patterned scarf (Death on the Vine)

[Image ID 3: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phrne is shown from the knees up standing in front of a horse and cart. She wears a cream duster, matching white hat, red blouse, brown skirt and a red scarf with an autumnal floral pattern. /End ID]
[Image ID 4: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Wider shot from the same scene as the previous image. Phryne's brown aviator boots are now also visible. /End ID]
Phryne's classic duster car coat and matching hat make an appearance in look number two. From Death on the Vine, they're matched with a red, autumnal patterned scarf and her aviator boots.
3. B&E beret and grey tweed coat (Dead Air)

[Image ID 5: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne is in an old-fashioned radio studio, wearing a grey tweed coat with white panels, a black blouse, black gloves and a black beret. She has a black and white brooch on the coat lapel. /End ID]
[Image ID 6: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. A close up of Phryne wearing the same grey tweed coat and black beret from the previous image. /End ID]
Our third look is from the climax of Dead Air - Phryne's grey tweed coat with white panels worn over an all-black look and paired with her break and enter beret. It's a classic look, the beret and the coat appearing together previously in Raisins and Almonds. This time she's accessorised with a black and white brooch.
4. Green waltz dress (Death at the Grand)

[Image ID 7: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne stands inside an open doorway, buildings across the street out of focus through the doorway behind her. She wears a green dress and matching shawl. /End ID]
[Image ID 8: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne and Jack waltz in an empty ballroom. He wears a blue suit and brown shoes. She wears a the same green dress as in the previous image. Also clear from this angle are her gold shoes and headpiece. /End ID]
Look number four is Phryne's beautifully cut dress from the waltz scene in season three's Death at the Grand. The sutble pattern on the fabric is offset by simple details like the cord at the neckline and the clasp at the hip. She has a matching shawl but discards this to get down to risky business.
5. Sequin swing coat with black fur trim and B&E beret (Murder a la Mode)

[Image ID 9: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne stands examining an old fashioned camera. She wears a black beret, a black coat with a green and pink sequin pattern and black fur trim and black gloves. /End ID]
[Image ID 10: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne is shown from the waist up in front of a beige wall, wearing the same coat and beret as in the previous image. /End ID]
For look five, Phryne wears this wonderful sequined coat with a flower pattern and black fur trim. Seen when investigating at the House of Fleuri, she's paired it a black camisole and the ever reliable break & enter beret.
6. Silver patterned dressing gown (various episodes)

[Image ID 11: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne sits on bed beside Dot looking at a photograph held up in her hand. She wears a silver kimono with black pattern. /End ID]
[Image ID 12: Screencap from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne is shown from behind sat on her bed wearing her silver and black kimono while kissing Lin Chung. /End ID]
