This honestly looks like it should be lingerie, but apparently it's a party dress? Thanks to @northernmariette for bringing it to my attention!

This beautiful outfit, was designed by Earl Luick for the 1931 version of 饾懟饾拤饾拞 饾懘饾拏饾拲饾挄饾拞饾挃饾拞 饾懎饾拏饾拲饾拕饾拹饾拸, where it was worn by Thelma Todd as Iva Archer. It was worn again that same year on an extra in 饾懟饾拤饾拞 饾懝饾拞饾拕饾拰饾拲饾拞饾挃饾挃 饾懐饾拹饾挅饾挀. 聽 Learn more at Bit.ly/PostEd230 聽 聽 聽

So I Saw This Costume...
Emily in Paris (s1 e1, "Emily in Paris") / Lily Collins as Emily Cooper
Emily wears the outfit on her first trip to a patisserie after arriving in Paris, where she discovers pain au chocolat. She seems fond of yellow and wears the color rather often.
I assumed this was a dress, but apparently it's a two-piece ensemble from Ganni. The combination of polka dots and angular, asymmetrical linear elements is visually interesting. I think those are floral designs inside the linear decoration, but they might be just abstract. Accessories are a handbag by Patricia Field, a belt from Rag & Bone, and sandals by Elie Saab.

So I Saw This Costume...
Barry Lyndon / Marisa Berenson as Lady Honoria Lyndon
The focal point of this apricot-colored gown is the extravagant lace ruffles falling from the elbow-length sleeves. Apart from that, the decoration is quite restrained, with just a little embroidery on the bodice and a couple of flowers on the overskirt.
The story of the movie covers several decades, and I don't remember which portion this costume is from, but I would guess the 1770s, based partly on the hairstyle. However, if anyone knows for sure, please let me know and I'll edit accordingly!

So I Saw This Costume...
The United States vs. Billie Holiday / Andra Day as Billie Holiday
Well, I fell off the posting wagon hard for a while there! I had computer trouble back in February and then RL got crazy for a while. But tonight, I told myself, "Just post something, anything." And as I was looking through my folder of pictures, this one caught my eye.
Like many of the costumes in this film, this gown is not so much a recreation as a reinterpretation of one famously worn by Billie Holiday. Below is a side-by-side comparison of the original dress from 1947 and the movie version. I must say, I like the contrasting black panels on the bodice in the movie.

Nice costume rundown of the show here. I find the costumes for the show hilarious, but I did like the comment about how unsympathetic characters get more historically accurate costumes. It seems some actual thought was put into the handling of the show.

So I Saw This Costume...
The Importance of Being Earnest / Reese Witherspoon as Cecily Cardew
This seems an appropriate dress to post on Valentine's Day, as it is worn in the scene where Cecily explains to Algernon that they have been engaged since February 14th (much to his surprise).
Cecily wears pink quite often in this movie, although here the effect seems to be achieved by a sheer layer of white over a red base. The top has a simple polka-dot pattern with rows of lace and the skirt has a floral design. The bodice is trimmed with red ribbon bows at the neck and on the puffed sleeves.

So I Saw This Costume...
The New Avengers / Joanna Lumley as Purdey
I've mentioned not being a major fan of 1970s styles, but Purdey's wardrobe in this series is often tasteful and quirky enough to break through that prejudice. This flowing white blouse-and-skirt combo with kiss patterns on it seems very appropriate for Valentine's Day!
In some ways, it looks forward to the 1980s with the billowing drapiness of it and the dropped shoulders on the sleeves. The skirt ties with a drawstring and appears to be a wrap-around design; we occasionally see Purdey's leg through the gap where it comes together. At one point, she loses the skirt, revealing shorts of the same fabric underneath. The top also has a hood in back, but we never see her wear it up. With the outfit, she wears either beige or red sandals.
Screencaps are taken mostly from "Complex" (s2e10), but some are from "Angels of Death" (s2e2) and "K is for Kill part 2: Tiger by the Tail" (s2e9). Season 2 of The New Avengers aired in 1977.

So I Saw This Costume...
The Innocent (L'Innocente) / Jennifer O'Neil as Teresa Raffo
This was one of Coeli's Picks a while back, and I've always wanted to give this dress its own focus post. Display photos show it as a luscious raspberry-pink, but onscreen it comes off as a deeper color, closer to red, and the metallic embroidered patches really reflect the light. We also briefly see a matching cape with what appears to be a feathered standing collar. Interestingly, she wears both a wide ribbon and a pearl choker together around her neck.

So I Saw This Costume...
Om Shanti Om / Deepika Padukone as Shantipriya and Yuvika Chaudhary as Dolly Arora
In a scene set in 1977, Shanti wears this stunning magenta lehenga to a movie premiere. I love how the silver embroidery is asymmetrically placed over the right shoulder, following the neckline. The low back is another attractive feature.
Later in the film, Dolly wears a recreation of the same outfit as a costume, which gives us the best look at it from a full-length front view.

So I Saw This Costume...
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein / Helena Bonham Carter as Elizabeth Lavenza
Elizabeth wears this gown to a dance held in honor of Victor Frankenstein going off to study at the university, a scene which takes place in 1789. The front of the gown is embroidered with flowers, leaves, and what appears to be wheat. We can see in the bottom photo that the embroidery continues around the back.
Frock Flicks did a great writeup of the costumes for this film, which were designed by James Acheson. I borrowed several of their photos, in fact!
