29. morning, afternoon, or night?

I appreciate them all for different reasons, but there's something about nighttime that I am especially drawn to. Late-night walks when no one is around. Spring peepers. Peaceful.

30. what reminds you of home (doesn't have to mean house... just things that remind you of the feeling of home)?

Fields surrounded by forest. Dandelions. Songbirds and spring peepers. Sunny days with a light breeze. Quiet nights shrouded in fog. Petrichor. Distant sounds of people going about their lives. Bright rooms and open space. The large huff dogs make as they wind down. Kaloo's whiskers brushing the back of my head from the backseat during a drive. The sound of my partner's laugh, and her quiet singing.

68) Excellent choice. Kovu has many strange and endearing habits:

- he LOVES "helping" me take out the trash. he loved it a little too much and was getting not-our-inside voice loud about it so now he helps by waiting in his crate until I release him to run into the yard

- he MUST have a piece of pupcorn tossed for him when coming in from the yard. he will accept nothing else. it very specifically must be pupcorn and must be tossed. anything that's not pupcorn or the dog equivalent of caviar will be gently accepted, placed on the floor, then followed by the most intentional sit in the whole entire world. all while maintaining eye contact with me of course.

- if we're in the house, chews are for chewing on gras soft surfaces only. he's not going to lie on the floor like some kind of animal.

- my roommate MUST play the kovu like bongo when they first see baby. if kovu hasn't seen my roommate for an extended period of time, he will request a roommate bongoing 2, maybe even 3 times a day.

my playing-kovu-like-bongo skills are adequate, in his opinion, but sadly, cannot compare to my roommates abilities. my roommate was in band so I don't feel that bad about it. is what it is.

(The desire for playing-kovu-like-bongo is expressed with a distinct and purposeful high velocity wiggling, sometimes followed by pressing into your leg.)

- if you get up he immediately takes your spot

- he wastes as much energy as possible hiking but in a really laid back way. he like he sniffs a plant, marvels at the birds and bees. then jumps over a row of fallen trees just to show off how smart and good he is (he is very smart and good)

- all packages are GIFTS!! For kovu!! for kovu who is good boy!! He lies so properly waiting so patiently for his chance for his package for him as all packages are. he is so so sure that the next best thing is just around the corner.

because I am a sucker (and because I am right) I reinforce this behavior by giving him a treat. because you know what? he's right. good things are just around the corner. the world exists for him. I want him to believe that for all of his life.

so few creatures get to live a life like that. a life full of wonder. an optimistic life. it makes me feel proud that I've helped him grow into a dog that feels safe and confident enough to expect good things from the world around him. it makes me feel lucky, because so much of it his him could never be taught

also, he's my friend, and we get to enjoy something together. he gets an extra pupcorn for this one
