this sweet, sweet animal is trying to kill me.
#we averaged around 3.5 km/h today#completely abysmal pace#and for a good portion of it she wasnāt even stopping to sniff which would at least be reasonable#no she was just walking next to me as slowly as possible#weāre living the snail life out here fr

Always interesting when adoptdontshop people follow me. Did youā¦ did you think I got this beast from a shelter?
#i guess in the us you might be able to find an aussie in a shelter? maybe?#over here though - literally not a chance

Itās so funny to me how slow Kaija gets after her heats. Weāll be on a walk in the forest and sheāll just amble along 2m behind me. Today she didnāt even want to do that, so a good portion of our walk was spent going at her walking pace (very slow).
#kinda wish we hadnāt gone as far as we did#idk how enjoyable walks are for her right now if sheās going so slow#iāll keep it in mind next time.#well anyway it just cracks me up that iām out here with my active herding breed and weāre crawling along#at the glorious speed of an old lady with a geriatric shih tzu

I feel like weāre starting to hit a groove with the exercises from āAttention Pleaseā. Granted, it is the most basic of the basics. Iām still only asking for about 1min or so of uninterrupted focus in an easy environment, with very few, if any, cued behaviours.
But Kaija is very clearly understanding when āworkā is about to be available and offers her start button behaviour asap. And Iāve learned the patterns well enough that I no longer need to be thinking about what Iām doing all the time, so I can pay more attention to what Kaija is doing instead. So, slow going but itās going.
#gotta focus real hard on our small victories#rally trial season has started and it seems like everywhere i look thereās people celebrating their wins#which they should and i am happy to celebrate along with them#but iām having a hard time letting go of this feeling of failure

whats the most ridiculous cue word you have heard for a pretty standard behavior? i'll go first, someone telling the dog to heel by saying "place" as the cue
#a lot of people in our rally ob class use āsviestsā for side shift in front#literal translation is ābutterā but in this context it means something like āinsanityā or āabsurdityā#because thatās a pretty tough one to train#someone in class referred to it with that word and it just caught on#i just use āaheadā for it but iām boring#oh also there was one person who for their heel cue used āpriekÄā which means ācheersā#that was very cute

Alright so a quick update from our vet visit yesterday.
No more vet wrap since it apparently doesnāt breathe well enough. Instead Kaija is to wear a cotton sock only. Nice in theory, but this morning I woke up to her chewing her paw bloody through the sockā¦
She did get put on Apoquel to hopefully help her feel more comfortable and discourage the chewing. If that wonāt help then it will have to be the cone 24/7.
The overall assessment was that this doesnāt really make sense. The original wound - however it came to be - should have healed a long time ago and been fine. It doesnāt make sense why she so obsessively wants to keep chewing her paw open over and over again.
We have our next check up in two weeks, so weāll see how things are looking thenā¦ Iām really hoping the Apoquel will help.

So Iām trying to work through āAttention Pleaseā, which is a course from Tromplo all about loopy training and how it relates to focus, and itās been interesting. Iām looking at a lot of things that I never have before, recording every session and then watching it back in slow motion.
During our first couple of sessions I noticed that Kaija would do this really slight and quick tongue flick every time after I marked with the clicker. I saw it, but I figured she was just anticipating the cookie. Plus, this technically fell between behaviour and consequence in our little A-B-C training loop, so I figured it wasnāt really what I was looking for anyway (I was more so looking for ājunkā behaviours between A and B, and between C and A).
But then, during our session today, she was no longer flicking her tongue after I clicked. Soā¦ what do I make of this? Iām now leaning towards this being a tiny little stress behaviour, and not just pure anticipation, which has reduced with more repetitions because she better understands what weāre doing. Maybeā¦??
Well, either way itās something I never would have spotted before, without actually watching back my recorded sessions, and in terms of this course thatās a kind of win already.
#this course feels a little bit like i have to learn how to walk all over again#except instead of parents helping and modeling the behaviour for me#i only have books and videos to learn this skill from#i will say though that so far i *think* itās going pretty well#the tiny tongue flicks were the only āājunkāā i saw in our sessions so far#now to see what happens when we practice in more difficult locations
