i kind of feel like i’ve been seeing a lot of nolan siegel hate which is really shitty for a multitude of reasons. 1. he’s, like, a kid. he’s 19 years old. chill the hell out. he’s also really nice. 2. he’s actually really talented and deserves this opportunity. he got rookie of the year in indynxt. And 3. he didn’t really do anything wrong. he said yes to an opportunity, something that literally everyone in his position would have done. It’s Zack brown and gavin ward who are in the wrong, they are the ones who had a contract with another driver. so, like, be mad at arrow mclaren all you want, obviously. but don’t be an asshole to nolan siegel about it.

a little late but here it Goes, (This is gonna be a bit of an analysis of the trailer along with my thoughts)

first off, seeing the trailer I was genuinly hyped for it. To first get the kinda positive things out of the way, I genuinly loved the animation (like, the visuals in Some animated shots where pretty Nice) even though it looked off sometimes (unpopular opinion i know and i have a few unpopular ones for this still) and the Jokes in this trailer… meh. Like, I didn’t laugh or chuckle at the “I think i just smurfed my pants” joke, neither did i with the “I think i swallowed my gum” one or the guacamole one…. (It’s a little funnier in the translated version from the english trailer. Which made me chuckle a a Tiny bit. They don’t mention the guacamole too) dfrbjljofghoj. Some of the voices where decent even. Most of the characters looked really Nice ngl (EXCEPT FOR SERTAIN 2 WHICH MOST OF US IN THE DISCORD CHAT KNOW ABOUT 😭)

And I really hope they also give an IN UNIVERSE explanation on WHY the HELL papa’s brother is called KEN of all things and cmon… I genuinly feel bad for Ken, being like a recoloured clone of papa (with a… Tatoo?) and also, my first ever thought seeing ken of the first time was just… Why does he look like the papa smurf from the Cousin Smurfs from one of the little comics? YES, THIS ONE👇

also, gargamel already had a twin brother too. HE WAS ALSO SHOWN IN THE COMICS- (hmmm ye…This really feels like the ‘long lost sibling trope’ that made people remind of trolls. Hkjrdtjhtjkhkj )

another character I feel kinda bad for by just existing, despite the funny memes: Influencer smurf…

YES, YES I know… it’s pretty weird of them to put an influencer smurf in there despite it not making sense AT ALL. They could have put any other smurf in his place and everything would have been alright. (Though I am also kinda… how do i put this… Glad (?) That it’s thanks to influencer that the trailer of this movie is getting a lot of attention.

Also, again about the voices… Even though we didn’t hear all of them… just gonna say, I like moxie’s voice, that of the villians are alright too I guess, Hefty’s voice is also pretty good not gonna lie. But… I’ll have to get used to Some of the voices, like Ken, Papa and smurfette….

speaking of smurfette too. Some of us I think are pretty tired of having her as the lead. At least it’s alongside another smurf though.

Also, I see no one talking about those Fluffy little creature- thingies and the turtle (they’re most likely there for the ‘marketable plushies’ thing. Though the fuzzy creatures do have a relevant plot thing going on it looks like?

And I do also think by seeing the 2 different trailers (one of em being translated and the other just being the english version) that this guy👇

Is gonna be like the little sidekick of gargamel, being that i saw this Guy help the villains in a way? Idk hjgdiorhoigrh I’m just analizing a bit-

ANOTHER THING: the life-action thing threw me off not gonna lie. It just… doesn’t fit… ;-; AND ON TOP OF THAT it’s like 2011 and 2013 all over again, just with less ‘uncanny’ designs for the blue beans (and despite the shading the animation models just look off in the ‘life action’ scenes…) They AGAIN go to the ‘REAL’ world, they AGAIN go to paris (speaking of paris, WHY AGAIN PARIS?! Please, if you Guys let the blue beans go to our world again, AT LEAST IT COULD HAVE BEEN IN BELGIUM,RIGHT? 👁️👁️ partially to let it not be a deja-vu to the 2011 and 2013 movies entirely… like...PLEASE?! 😞) AND HOW DOES SMURFETTE KNOW THEY’RE IN PARIS? I’m begging at this point for an explanation to be in the movie. This kinda feels like a continuation of the life-action CGI movies khdfgjhoigjoi (more refrence to those movies! :/)

like most might have pointed out already, it feels like a fanfiction that somehow managed to be shown on the big screens.

I had high hopes for this film in the beginning, they lowered a bit thanks to things that where kinda being shown as spoilers in the discord chat, before the trailer was out (I’m looking at you sertain 2 characters) and i now set low expectations for it too… I don’t think I’m gonna see the movie in theaters… but i’ll try to give it a chance despite the bad stuff…

And I’m not gonna see this movie as something that’s canon in the Smurfs universe. I’m sorry but this… it’s sad… and i feel kinda bad that it turned out this way…

i'm making this post mostly to vent, but also to reflect.

being in mdzs fandom was the first time being in fandom felt like... "content," to me. like i was a creator who WAS obliged to the masses, who was seen as holding some social power because i was interested in creating works for people to enjoy, rather than enjoying them myself. even though i am both: i am someone who likes to read as much as i like to write. i like enjoying as much as i like creating things for people to enjoy. i don't believe in this dichotomy, and i sure as hell didn't come into fandom for parasocial attention.

one of the problems definitely was that i was on twitter more than i was writing, and i was thinking of ways to game the algorithm so i stayed on people's feeds, because of the way twitter began to work, because of my own anxiety, and because subconsciously i understood the landscape. i didn't like it but i knew it. and too much was going on in my life that i couldn't take a step back and realize how much it was negatively affecting me.

still, it felt weird and strange and wrong to have followers with bios that said things like "don't perceive me i'm just here to read." strangers who would reply to my posts with over-familiarity and rudeness and said they were justified because i had over 1000 followers on twitter, because that is apparently a marker of how you are "allowed" to treat another stranger online. throwing around the terms "bnf" and "popular" as if they mean something beyond being similar to how american high schools work. i saw people group me and my friends who also had a lot of followers as this exclusive class of people in the fandom because we liked making things for other people to enjoy and we had a lot of followers, and therefore they could treat and generalize us all in weird dehumanizing ways because of it. i saw people complain that if any of us said anything "problematic" or "wrong" then it was a moral failing on the rest of us if we didn't publicly call it out.

and like. fandom is not a content creation space. at least, not to me. while i do like attention and making a big number even bigger—like i'm not gonna lie, it does give me dopamine!—i didn't come here to generate a parasocial audience. i came here to make cool stuff and also make friends. and now with people who follow me because they like the things i make and less so me, something i now struggle with that i didn't used to in fandom is: do i follow people back? do these people see me as someone they want to admire and have a parasocial relationship with, or do they want to be friends? this post is a little bit of a PSA as well, i suppose: while i don't believe that everyone in fandom/who now follows me has this content creation mindset, i know there are people who do, and i don't know how to interact with strangers anymore. if you don't want me to interact with you and just want to admire me from afar, i want to respect that boundary. at the same time, i do like making friends. and i want to make friends with people who are just purely curious about me, not because i'm put on this parasocial pedestal.

i also don't think this is a problem with mdzs fandom specifically, or even necessarily just for fandom itself. i think a lot of spaces online have turned into this: where not only your social power but also your personhood, your identity starts and ends with how big the number next to your name is, and is an indicator to a stranger how humanizing you can treat them. make your private assumptions or judgments about me; i have no control over them so i don't care. but i am still a human behind the screen as much as you. i struggle with my day to day stuff as much as anyone else. and i want to make friends over that. i want to commiserate and bond with people; and while i won't pretend that i don't think there is a little more "influence" if the number next to your name is a bit bigger, i don't think it should detract from the reality that if someone has 30 followers or 3000, they are still human.

but i'm also mostly making this post because let's face it: most of the friends i've made in any fandom, historically, have been either because i was a fan of their work, or they were a fan of mine. and that's what fandom is all about—an exchange, a conversation. why are we reinventing rigid hierarchies based on follower count? why should someone who likes my fics or someone whose fics i like be treated any differently, because of the role we play in this exchange? (and why should whose fanfic you enjoy say something about you as a person... but that's a different conversation lol) there are actual content creators i like, content creators who profit monetarily based purely on that, and the monetary profit is their primary motivator in having that label, that career in the first place. but that is not fandom, to me. fandom is not a job and i am not here to profit (all of my works and thoughts are free!), and in no way has money ever played a role in my existence in fandom. it is what it's always been: to make cool things and to meet cool people. and if nothing else, it's a bit disappointing to realize that not everyone feels the same.

anyway! tl;dr if you're interested in talking to me and being friends feel free to always reach out. i also know that my own response times can be spotty (another flaw of mine, alas) but i'm mostly making this post to say that i am not someone who thinks of myself as separate from my audience, and that my numbers/output mean very little to how willing i am to engage. i can get overwhelmed as much as anyone else, but in my heart if you're interested in a dialogue with me, then i am too. because that's what being in fandom is all about.

i need a new strategy for like, cleaning my room and doing yoga and reading and leaving the house. the adhd has reached mythic levels of bad. i have the thought, "i should do X," and then i won't move. i make a to-do list and i won't do anything on it. i queue up a yoga practice and i won't do it. i stare at my room and get stressed out about how cluttered it is. i write 3000 words of notes for a fic i don't even know if i'm going to write. i think and i think and i think about my OCs and they won't let me write them. i spend hours looking at stuff i can't buy. i take like an hour to write this.

omg your tags on that headcanon post resonate so much with me. i love reading fsnficiton but it is very obviously whether someone is writing about the source material or playing dolls (which is an analogy i ALSO use look at us. look at us.) and while. full respect to playing dolls that shit ruled as kids still rules now probably like have fun and be yourself godspeed but it is always weirdly dissonant for those two things to coexist without clear distinction from each other. all this to say i AGREE

There's nothing bad about taking characters and doing whatever you want with them and having fun, because you can make some really great and creative things that way. It's when people fail to be able to recognise that what they're doing is completely removed from canon that it gets frustrating, especially for anything still actively being made..

Because new canon content is 9/10 times gonna build off previous canon, and there are a lot of fandoms nowadays that exist heavily in the level 3 and beyond space of headcanons that continually act like new, official content not being fanon-compliant is disappointing or problematic, and that people who like the canon content and want to discuss it are somehow the ones that don't belong in the fandom.

Honestly at this point it's often hard to tell if people who complain endlessly about the canon of the thing they're a fan of is due to an actual inability to recognise when popular headcanons are a 3 or 4 or if there's a genuine chunk of people in fandoms who legit dislike their source material and got into the material and/or a character exclusively due to fanon creations and ideas

CRINGETOBER Day 5: Gijinka

this gave me the excuse to dredge up some Really Old characters i never ended up doing anything with lol

so this is a mix of both anthro and actual gijinka/humanization, because i find the anthro approach much more fun but i had asked a couple months ago for some more unconventional pokemon to gijinkafy, and this was also an excuse to finally follow through with them as well

the first two anthro characters were supposed to be for some group on deviantArt bc i was trying to be active in various pokemon communities there - the Absol i'd named Krallen was the main guy i was trying to apply with and the Growlithe is his sister as just a fun side character with opposing personalities

and the other two human characters are a Comfey and Vanillite respectively! the two interpretations of them i had in my mind were so clear, so coming up with these designs didn't actually take long at all lol

i had planned on digitizing these, but the sketches for the first two turned out really clean so i just decided to keep them analog and used some of my colored pencils for them!
