Bumble’s Music Reviews Special Edition: Recommendon’tions
As you may recall, some time ago I began searching for songs that sound bad. Today I finally listened to the suggestions I received: “Yours is No Disgrace - Live at Academy of Music, New York, NY, 2/19/1972” - Yes; “Woodpecker No. 1” - Merzbow; “I Hate CD’s” - The Legendary Stardust Cowboy; Troll - James Ferraro; and Never Mind the Gap - Negative Øhio!
“Yours is No Disgrace - Live…” - Nominated by The Knight, who mentioned that her distaste for this song might be due to its contrast with the original recording, and yeah. This is a good song, and I haven’t listened to the original yet so I had nothing to be disappointed by. I thought it was quite a good performance, actually. Sorry. Song is a 4/5, recommendation 0/5.
“Woodpecker No. 1” - Nominated by The Hater, this is the clear winner. Is it enjoyable? Absolutely not. Is it good? I have no idea. It sounds like a robot hamster being tortured. I almost like it, in a way… but not quite. Song ?/5, recommendation 5/5.
“I Hate CD’s” - Nominated by The Unicorn. This song is so fucking stupid. I’m obsessed with it. I really thought surely it must be satire, but no. This is real. He doesn’t really sing so much as yell. Have you ever heard a trumpet mumble? You have now. Bruce Springsteen catches strays for no apparent reason. They threw in some vocal chopping, too, just for fun. The rhymes are… really something. This is art and I mean it.
The song does not fit the prompt, being extraordinarily enjoyable, but I can’t even be mad about it because I love it so much. I need everyone to listen to this. Song 5/5, recommendation 3/5. His cowboy boots have a lot of power, you guys. And I think he hates CDs.
Troll - Nominated by a friend of Neo’s. I actually quite like this. I can understand the thought process behind the nomination - songs like “Cyber Bile” have some discordant tones that most people would probably find unpleasant. But others, like “Bio Sewer”, are rather lovely. And I really like the choice to feature Miku! Conceptually fitting and well executed. EP 4/5, recommendation 3.5/5.
Never Mind the Gap - Nominated by Neo darlingdistantplaces. Now here’s a really fun one! It’s harsh, unfriendly, and, at least at the beginning, a little unpleasant - but not enough so to make me stop listening. Around the halfway point, though, I began to see the vision. I actually quite liked the frantic video-game energy of “Everybody Who Built the Carpal Tunnel Went Blind Afterwards. - Unisexy Mix”, and “Enema Nosebleed - Toxic Tuxedo Mix” and “127 Inches of Midi Dick” go hard.
Do I like it? Not exactly. Then again, digital hardcore was never going to be my thing. But I do think it’s very interesting - I would never think to combine sounds in this way - and genuinely really cool. Also the album cover goes hard. This is the queer art Megami wanted us to protect. Album 4/5, recommendation 4.5/5.

On this day in 1974, Yes released the album “Relayer”.
“Yes delivers yet another amazing progressive rock album, this time combining it with elements of Avante-Garde, giving it a beautiful and well-defined texture. The tracks on this record are easily some of Yes' best, and in my opinion, the force of these three tracks combined makes this their best album so far in my Yes journey. The soundscapes are mastered in every song, giving each song the same feel as the album cover (the cover being one of my favorite album covers ever, by the way). Yes proves themselves yet again to be a force in the progressive rock game, giving us, or at least me, the best rock music I have ever heard.
The way the instruments sound in each track and mesh together makes me feel like I am levitating throughout the listening experience. "The Gates of Delirium" is easily the best track here and is also one of the best rock songs I have ever heard in a long time. "To Be Over" was also an amazing experience, giving us a slow and relaxed feel after the chaos that is "Sound Chaser."”

|| Harbour Century - Eunuchs ||
Genres: Avant-Prog, Symphonic Prog, Jazz-Rock
REVIEW
This album was a wild ride.
I was definitely wowed with opening track 'Magic Death Sea Nemesis'. The first bit was loud and powerful, a great introduction to the album but the second section of the track is much slower and more theatrical than the hectic opening, which killed my excited mood. It was revived again for a short while in the middle, before moving back into another slower section. This was a lot more enjoyable than the first slow part in that it sounded less like a musical and more like a jazz piece. The progression of the track as a whole is certainly interesting, but could absolutely be improved in making it longer and padding out the periods of change in the song.
'Pat a Dragon' is an exciting second track with a great riff and fantastic progression. The weakest moments Eunuchs' songs tend to be the slower, quieter ones, and that's the same here, but other then that short blip in the track, it's really great. I said they tended to be the slower, quieter moments as it's just a trend, but they can definitely make them work - and they do! 'Estuary of Dreams' is a much more laid-back song than the last two, but that doesn't mean it's dull by any means. It's instrumentation is, dare I say, some of the best on the album. Definitely a standout track.
On the topic of standout tracks, 'Siren' is certainly another. It is instrumentally unique, and definitely the catchiest song on the whole album. The mad devolution at the end of the song is also a great moment. All in all, it's just a really enjoyable piece of music to listen to.
'Magnificent Stallion' is one of the weaker songs on this album, but it's still very good. It feels like a very average performance from the band, but luckily the band is very good which cancels it out. The same goes for 'Gnome and Fortune', though slightly better and quite a bit longer. 'Gnome and Fortune' suffers slightly from its 6 minute runtime and would've benefitted from cutting a minute out of the middle.
The accelerando movement of 'Bird Angel Dynasty' definitely kept me on my toes, but the section near the end in which it moved down to a steady, slower tempo was poorly executed and felt like it wasn't thought out compared to the rest of the song. Whilst were talking about songs that didn't sound thought out (wow my segues are awesome today), 'Hierophant' is definitely the weakest track. I love the introduction, but the quiet part with wispy vocals that didn't suit the singer was very 'meh', and the second half of the track was just hectic, and not in a good way.
While I do appreciate the time and effort it takes to compose a long song, especially anything over 15 minutes, not everything this long is actually great. Now, 'Heroin King' is good but it isn't great. Something I've praised the band for so far is the interesting progression present in their best songs. There is none of that here. The most notable variation in the song is when the vocalist starts screaming at the end and by that point it's a lost cause. It's very repetitive and quite dull, and not something I'd want to listen to again most likely.
Harbour Century is a fantastic effort from Eunuchs, but becomes a bit of a drag toward the end. The first half of the album is brilliant though, and I will definitely revisit it. I'd absolutely recommend this.
FINAL SCORE: 86/100

ok quick entry for the albums i listened to before i started recording lol
the doors - the doors— excellent. classic. no notes. 5/5
close to the edge - yes— i can’t believe no one told me about this. every second is incredible. masterpiece. 5/5
el jardín de los presentes - invisible— i don’t know how to describe it but it feels dry. now im not saying i want my music damp but this album could use some humidity does that make sense. LOVED “alarma entre los ángeles” though. 4/5
illmatic - nas— ridiculously good. 5/5
offline! - jpegmafia— experimental music is experimental. some songs i adored (“dikembe!”, “og!”), others not so much (“end credits”). even so the overall effect was very enjoyable. 4.5/5
(tumblr hates me so i’ll put the other two highlight songs in a reblog)
