black midi - Cavalcade
Working backwards from their discography, Cavalcade was next up. This album maintains the off-kilter song structures and off-the-wall productions from Schlagenheim, and still contains the jazz fusion and experimentation that Hellfire had (but without the thematic constraints). The songs in this album play with dynamic extremes, going from wild highs ("John L", "Chrondomalacia Patella", "Hogwash and Balderdash") to whisper-quiet lows ("Diamond Stuff", "Ascending Forth"). From the get-go, black midi is always self-assured in their sound and aesthetic, which is why the change in style from an incredibly volatile record like Schlagenheim to Cavalcade was not at all jarring.
Favourites:
(Yeah, this is gonna be another one where all of the songs are my favourite. Each song is consistently good and there's just so much detail in the chaos.)

On this day in 1974, Yes released the album “Relayer”.
“Yes delivers yet another amazing progressive rock album, this time combining it with elements of Avante-Garde, giving it a beautiful and well-defined texture. The tracks on this record are easily some of Yes' best, and in my opinion, the force of these three tracks combined makes this their best album so far in my Yes journey. The soundscapes are mastered in every song, giving each song the same feel as the album cover (the cover being one of my favorite album covers ever, by the way). Yes proves themselves yet again to be a force in the progressive rock game, giving us, or at least me, the best rock music I have ever heard.
The way the instruments sound in each track and mesh together makes me feel like I am levitating throughout the listening experience. "The Gates of Delirium" is easily the best track here and is also one of the best rock songs I have ever heard in a long time. "To Be Over" was also an amazing experience, giving us a slow and relaxed feel after the chaos that is "Sound Chaser."”

PoiL Ueda / Yoshitsune PoiL Ueda (2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Heike Monogatari’s legends and tales are epic and ancient; they’re of the sort of scale and magnitude for which only the tense minimalism of folk music seems appropriate. One imagines that trying to actually match such drama with sonic scale would produce incomprehensibly bombastic, maniacally cluttered music – and yet that’s exactly what PoiL Ueda attempted on these two records last year. The results, instead of messy or overblown, are superb. Junko Ueda presides as chief storyteller of the project’s renditions of the Heike Monogatari, leading with a droning traditional Japanese singing style and an always-legible satsuma biwa. French proggers PoiL, despite their vast capacity for volume, only ever supplement and enhance Ueda; restrained but still dextrous and transportive collaborators. Transportive musical epics worthy of the ancient stories within.
Pick(s): ‘Kujô shakujô, Pt. 3’, ‘Kumo Pt. 1’

🇩🇪 Allemagne | Zenna Records | 64 minutes | 15 morceaux
