on twitter, a viral thread started where people around the world shared their translations of “If I must die”, the last work of Dr Refaat Alareer also known as "the voice of Gaza". A beloved poet, teacher and life-long activist for Palestine, he was recently assassinated along with members of his extended family by a targeted Israeli air strike. His loss leaves a hole in the heart of palestinians all over the world.
Below the cut, I’ll be posting the translations of his poem, with links to the original posts. Unfortunately, tumblr limits posts to a maximum of 30 images. I will update when I can.

Not everyone in Malmo was welcoming the Eurovision Song Contest to town.Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators protested in the Swedish port city on Thursday against Israel’s participation in the pan-continental pop competition.Protesters waving green, white, black and red Palestinian flags packed the historic Stortorget square near Malmo’s 16th-century town hall before a planned march through the city for a rally in a park several miles (kilometers) from the Eurovision venue. Police estimated that between 10,000 and 12,000 people took part. Among those in the crowd was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. Chanting “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” and “Israel is a terror state,” the demonstrators set off smoke flares in the Palestinian colors during a noisy, peaceful rally to criticize Israel and call for a cease-fire.

"Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, an activist of Turkish origin with American citizenship, has ascended to martyrdom after being shot in the head by IOF soldiers during the weekly anti-settlement protest in the town of Beita near Jabal Sbeih, south of #Nablus. She was volunteering with the Faz3a campaign to support and protect Palestinian farmers from the violations of the occupation and settlers." -via RNN.

An American citizenship won’t shield you if you choose to stand in solidarity with Palestinians. She was shot by a sniper with American weapon and American bullet, likely trained by Americans too.
Please be shaken by those news. Please keep Palestinians on your mind and share news as well as fundraisers.
I usually do daily updates of Falastin's fundraiser to get her family out of Gaza with art, but I can't do that for some time. She's raising since late June and she still doesn't have enough funds even for one person; and her family consists of 24. On a good day she gets a 100$, and on a bad day - 0.
Yes, her fundraiser was vetted. Yes, it is on The Vetted Gaza Evacuation List - number 282.
Please consider donating any amount and sharing this wherever you can.
1$ = 10.25 kr
5$ = 51.27 kr
10$ = 102.55 kr
25$ = 256.37 kr
50$ = 512.75 kr
100$ = 1,025.50 kr

@wickedsnack not to mention the entire concept of "i want a popular person to do it" has been proved to be Part of the Problem. when a smaller Black creator on YT got banned for nonsense reasons, several other big YT creators (including fucking markiplier) ACTIVELY TRIED to get banned doing similar things and didn't get even a slap on the wrist. it's all about $$ and big creators have already proven they can bring in the $$
Exactly!!! There are plenty of creators on tiktok that do curse a lot or even talk about race, but the main difference is that they're white and their platforms are huge and making a lot of money. They're also not politically left - if anything, they're likely to be liberal or conservative like fucking Libs of Tiktok.
Another example: the existence of the "⚠FAKE BODY" flag at the beginning of a description. This solely exists because women were getting their videos taken down for "inappropriate content" when they were wearing anything from bikinis or even just crop tops - worse so if it was someone who wasn't skinny or white. And naturally, not a single man was getting this harassment, even in borderline pornographic material. I follow a black cosplayer who has to put that in everything because she has a very elastic mouth/cheek area? And can and does weird shit with this, and if she doesn't include that "⚠FAKE BODY" tag the video gets taken down. I also can't count how many times black artists get their content shadowbanned just by appearing in the video. One jeweler I follow gets more engagement if she uses one of the annoying voice filters with nothing of herself in it, compared to say a video with her face and actual voice in it. Black dancers get shadowbanned for just existing or trying to promote their content - so where are these people getting the idea that "shadowbanning" is just a fallacy to handwave the fact they suck?
Because gee, it's like. People who make channels on Tiktok or YouTube their livelihood are people who pay attention to stats. They also experiment with videos, titles, content, descriptions etc to see what works and what doesnt. It's almost like you can get your account unshadow banned if a skinny white guy suddenly takes over the channel, and a few people have done that to prove a point. There's a damn good reason why ⚪, 🌴🧍, and ✋🏻 have all become synonymous with white (race). White people seem to be able to talk about white (race) with little issues, but black content creators can't even say the word which has resulted in these work arounds - the same applies to ⚫ and 🤚🏿 when referring to black (race) because that one gets you suppressed faster than the former (even so far as removing audio). Not to mention yahtzee instead of nazi, which I see the most from someone who breaks down anti-semitic dogwhistles and is in no way popular so he's at risk but obviously not a single one of the white supremacists/nazis in his comments is at risk for literal hate speech/harassment 🙃
All you have to do to get hit by Tiktok is to have a black person or even visibly disabled person appear in a video - so yes, they absolutely are smacking people with penalties for what words they use. It's entirely based on platform size, generated income for Tiktok, and it's been well documented. To say that shadowbanning isn't a thing on there - when we know for a Fact that platforms like Twitter do it, admit to it, and openly monitor language - is just frankly ridiculous and deeply ignorant. Just disgusting behavior all around that would rather characterize Tiktok solely by what gets popular while ignoring the many different and thriving activist communities on the platform that are struggling to stay afloat. Tiktok (and Twitter) are algorithm based, but that algorithm only works based on what you feed it - so what's that say about these fuckers if that's how they characterize their experience with the platform?
Tumblr media
tell me you've never been around non-white leftists on tiktok w/o telling me you've never been around non-white leftists on tiktok.
it's SO fucking prevalent over there, it happens constantly, i accidentally typed out bisexual at one point and got a threat of suspension, another one for just saying ass or bitch, you Can get flagged for saying politically leftist things, and it's also not just tiktok. it's been years since youtubers experimented to see what would get them banned and demonetized based on titles, descriptions and content in the first 30 seconds. channels i watch are constantly uploading and reuploading with new titles and cards and it's all that same thing - can't talk about race, can't mention black people whatsoever, can't mention queerness.
This Is A Thing. you're just telling on yourself and what your fyp looks like. because it's very clear as to what gets shadowbanned and what doesn't. y'all seriously sound like conservatives.
#original#wickedsnack#these people make me so roilingly mad#I DONT EVEN LIKE TIKTOK but the way that people are up their asses about it on here has me fucking DEFENDING it#an app that regularly ruins the career trajectory of non-political creators of color or queer creators and often queer creators of color 💀#but we know why it's fine to talk about how tiktok is awful to (white) queer creators and (white) disabled creators but not Why this#self-censorship came to be and who it impacts the most. like why is stuff relating to violence and death centered? easy. because when#it's brought up in activist spaces it's usually in reference to police brutality and unjust killings of more often than not black people#there is a lot of stuff that's getting suppressed wrt palestine and the iranian protests but nowhere near the degree of suppression that#the family of Emmanuel Fru are currently going through - which he's an black autistic man that's been /imprisoned/ by the Swedish governmen#for having a breakdown in public. they will not release him until he's ''proved he's cured'' of his autism and now are denying his family#the ability to even see or speak to him?? because they posted photos of him in the literal clown makeup they put him in and#evidence of overdrugging him so now they aren't allowed to see him At All. And this isn't getting nearly as much traction as other stuff#because once again the subject is a black autistic man. and the videos are getting suppressed because of what his mother is saying#she does not self censor and she - and him - appear in the videos. she's frequently suppressed#i just wish people would stop talking out of their ass i s2fg.#edit for clarification: the staff at the facility is doing shit like messing with Emmanuel's hair and putting him in clown makeup.#he also gained a suspicious amount of weight in a short time and it screams abuse#but when the family confronted staff about his treatment the family was then banned from seeing him#they further stopped all contact back in 2020 when Emmanuel's mother began posting photos and video

By Francesca Block
On Wednesday, I reported that a trade magazine that promotes books refused to run an ad for Israel Alone because “customers might complain.”
Matt Baldacci, publisher of Shelf Awareness, said an ad for Bernard-Henri Lévy’s book about Israel post–October 7 could give booksellers “trouble they haven’t asked for and don’t wish to have.” The ad was originally scheduled to run on November 1 in the outlet’s weekly newsletter, which goes out to 645,000 general readers.
Since then, I’ve learned a June 14 newsletter from Shelf Awareness, which went out to more than 37,000 publishing professionals, contained an ad for P Is for Palestine, a children’s book that has stirred controversy for promoting an “antisemitic” ideology. P Is for Palestine was written by Iranian Swedish activist Golbarg Bashi and was first published in November 2017 by PM Press, a self-proclaimed “independent, radical publisher.”
P Is for Palestine runs through the alphabet, presenting colorful illustrations and words that represent each letter. In the book, the letter I stands for intifada, which it defines as “Arabic for rising up for what is right, whether you are a kid or a grownup!”
Intifada, in fact, translates to uprising or shaking off. The word is mainly used to describe two eras of violent Palestinian protest against Israel: The First Intifada, from 1987 to 1990, led to the deaths of dozens of Israelis and more than a thousand Palestinians, and the Second Intifada, from 2000 to 2005, culminated in the deaths of over a thousand Israelis and 4,000 Palestinians.
Jany Finkielsztein, a senior education analyst for the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, said that “P Is for Palestine serves as a tool of indoctrination rather than simple storytelling. For instance, ‘I is for intifada’ portrays violent uprisings in a favorable manner, conveying a harmful narrative to impressionable young children.
“Books that prioritize indoctrination aren’t literature.”
On Friday, Shelf Awareness released an apology for rejecting the ad for Israel Alone, addressing its statement “to everyone who is angry and disappointed about our recent decision.”
The statement went on to “clarify” that the ad was canceled from its weekly newsletter “that we publish on behalf of more than 250 independent bookstores, reaching 600,000 readers, with the goal of helping booksellers promote reading and sell more books. Our bookstore partners cannot block titles that are advertised. As a result, we are careful to keep in mind that every advertised title we include appears to the bookstores’ customers as something the store itself is endorsing.”

Ace week wrap-up
This week we, and many others around the world, have been focussing on asexuality, raising awareness of what is often an unknown and poorly understood sexuality.
We've been posting throughout the week about asexual history - the history of people who feel little or no sexual attraction. Here's a list of some topics we've covered on our podcast - some are explicitly asexual, using the terminology we use today, while others are the stories of people or groups that may have been asexual, or provided a safe space for asexual people.
18th century English novellist Jane Austen - Jane never married, and while we don't know the reason it’s possible that she was aromantic and/or asexual.
17th century Swedish monarch Christina - Christina converted from Lutheranism to Catholicism, citing the Catholic value placed on celibacy as a major factor in their conversion - possibly suggesting that they themselves were not interested in sex.
Asexuals have problems too - a 1971 US news article which set out to parody a contemporary debate about whether gay or straight people had it harder, and instead ended up resonating with an asexual audience.
Golden Orchid Societies in 19th century China - Golden Orchid Societies were communities of women who eschewed heterosexual marriage. Some Golden Orchid sisters had a solo wedding, showing their desire to remain independent - providing us insight into a historical possibility for asexual lives.
The Asexual Manifesto - written by feminist activists in 1972, this manifesto provides some insight into early asexual political movements in the USA.
Albanian sworn virgins - this traditional Albanian custom that allows someone assigned female at birth to assume a male gender role by taking a vow of chastity. While each individual would have their own experiences with the practice, it could form a space in Albanian culture for asexual people.
Happy ace week to all of you!

▶️ German police dismantled a pro-Palestine student camp in Dortmund after nearly four months and warned the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg of arrest if she returned.
This followed her attendance at a Berlin pro-Palestine protest and an invitation to speak at the camp.

More than 1,000 Swedish artists have signed an open letter against Israel's participation in the music competition, including famed international acts like Fever Ray and Robyn, and contest veterans such as opera star Malena Ernman — who performed in the song competition in 2009 and is the mother of climate activist Greta Thunberg.
