Middle School Monday: Super Sons: The Polarshield Project by Ridley Pearson, illustrated by Ile Gonzalez
The sons of Superman and Batman (Jon Kent and Ian Wayne) don’t really have a lot in common. But as the polar ice caps melt and everyone rushes inland to escape the rising sea levels, Jon and Ian become allies trying to save the world. This fast-paced story blends real problems and possible solutions like global warming and flood walls with fantastic elements like superheroes and the Polarshield Project.
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy graphic novels, stories about saving the world, and superheroes!

Jon Kent (pretty much) Complete Reading Order
Tumblr media
Compiled first for my personal use and tidied up for @jonkentweek ! Goes up to June 2024 and includes every appearance of this character that I could find. I used ComicVine's archive to track these down, which is both fallible and constantly being updated, so there might be some mistakes. Also, I did my best to highlight the occasions where Jon was a significant character in a story and to skip the ones that were just a non-speaking, one-panel cameo, but those were personal judgements and your mileage might vary.
Color key (and apologies for the eye strain): Red are issues in which Jon is a central character, not just a cameo, Blue are crossover events, Orange are stories that take place in alternate universes/are non canonical
Optional stuff you can read for historical context:
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (1997) a classic possible future story, which is, to my knowledge, the 1st time a character named Jon who is Superman’s kid appears
Son of Superman (1999) a self-contained, now AU, story about a teen Jon Kent, very classic 90s young adult comic with all the tropes that come with that, but enjoyable as the proto-iteration of Jon as an idea
Canon appearances start here
The Final Days of Superman crossover event: Superman (2011) 51-52, Batman/Superman (2013) 31-32, Action Comics (2011) 51-52, Superman/Wonder Woman (2013) 28-29 (This is the origin story of the Clark, Lois and Jon that the comics follow in Rebirth. Largely ignored by writers, as it was written to patch up New52 weirdness, but there are occasional references that might be confusing if you skip it completely.)
Convergence (2015) 5, 8
Superman: Lois and Clark (2015) 1-8 (Establishes Jon and his family in the DCU)
Superman (2016) 1-11, 13, 17-28, 30, 32-36, 38, 40-45, Special 1

Technically not necessary to understand main universe stories, but a few popular characters and characterizations were brought over to the main universe.)

Which of these are the most cursed? Introducing the Bizarro Robins: Ric Grayson (Nightwing 50), Pill Head (Batman and Robin 23), Mr. Sarcastic (Young Justice 52), and Ian Wayne (Super Sons: The Polarshield Project)
Arguments for each:
Ric: Took away Dick Grayson for an extended period of time in canon
Pill Head: Just look at him
Mr Sarcastic: Tim is doing that in canon of his own volition. He isn’t being forced, he isn’t concussed, he isn’t amnesiac, that’s just normal Tim Drake.
Ian Wayne: They whitewashed Damian
im tempted to vote for ian wayne bc wtf is that, but ric is also right there because i hate bald man

Do you have any recommendations for Superfam, Wonderfam, Flashfam and Arrowfam comics? I read your Batman starter list and I'm working my way through it, but I also wanted to try something different. Thanks!
Sort of, yeah! I put together a Wonderfam starter recs list awhile back; you can find it here.
Flashfam....I'm not nearly as familiar with, but Mark Waid's Flash run and Jeremy Adams' Flash run (both starring Wally) are fantastic, as is Impulse (1995). The Arrowfam is also generally out of my capacity to rec properly besides recommending Titans (1999) for Roy, Birds of Prey (1999) for Dinah, and a few scattered Arrowfam comics here and there (like Hard-Traveling Heroes, Quiver, and the Green Arrow Rebirth run).
And of course Young Justice (1998) if you want to read more Bart Allen, Cassie Sandsmark, and Kon-El.
....honestly, I would ask @ectonurites and @secretlystephaniebrown for Superfam recs. I have my own favorites, but they both know infinitely more about the Superfam than me and would be able to give you a much better "starter recs" list than I would. I would personally recommend Superman: Birthright and Superman Smashes the Klan as good intro comics. Everything after that kind of depends on what characters you want to read more about.

Tim Drake is receiving a new code name in July
Tumblr media
When DC announced their Wonder Comics line, it was a shock to see that Tim was once again assuming the Robin mantle in Young Justice. Tim was previously going by Red Robin with Damian Wayne being the sole Robin. In the July solicitation for Young Justice, it's announced that Tim will receive a new code name.
Tumblr media
The Robin's have been going thru a lot of changes lately with Dick becoming Ric and Jason wearing a new costume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even Damian has seen some controversy as he's going by a new nickname in DC Zoom's Super Sons: Polarshield Project. Instead of using Little D or Damian, the writer decided to call him DamIan. I personally don't see the problem with Damian's new nickname. It's still an extension of his regular name and DC Zoom (and DC Ink) are standalone stories that have no impact on the current continuity. His appearance is more alarming than a new nickname.
Tumblr media
Whatever code name Tim chooses, hopefully it is met with a warmer reception than what his fellow Robin's have received. You never know, this might be the birth of Savior.....dun dun duuuun. You can find out Tim's new code name July 8.

From the website But Why Tho? (which makes every article title I’ve seen from them confusing as hell) comes an article calling out whitewashing of Damian Wayne both in the past and in Super Sons graphic novel.

DC announced today new details surrounding its young reader imprints—DC Zoom and DC Ink—and revealed first looks at titles scheduled for release in fall 2019, all of which are available for pre-order below.
The cornerstone of today’s span announcement are two new graphic novels from DC’s middle grade imprint—DC Zoom—that will debut in October 2019:
THE SECRET SPIRAL OF SWAMP KID by acclaimed writer and illustrator Kirk Scroggs tells a lighthearted coming-of-age tale about a half-human/half-plant boy named Russell Weinwright. The book is completely written and drawn in first-person journal entries and features a fun, innovative lined notebook-style format.

DC SUPER HERO GIRLS: AT METROPOLIS HIGH marks the first DC Super Hero Girls (DCSHG) graphic novel by new series writer Amy Wolfram. Wolfram is joined by DCSHG veteran artist Yancey Labat for this original story set in the same universe as the new DC Super Hero Girlsanimated series created by Lauren Faust that will air Sundays at 4 p.m. ET/PT on Cartoon Network beginning March 17, 2019.
THE SECRET SPIRAL OF SWAMP KID and DCSHG: AT METROPOLIS HIGH will be joined this fall by previously announced DC Zoom titles by Meg Cabot and Cara McGee, Shannon and Dean Hale with Victoria Ying, and Minh Lê and Andie Tong, among others. Books published under the DC Zoom banner target middle grade readers ages 8-12 and tell stories focused on friends, family and growing up.
DC has also confirmed on-sale dates and shared early looks at forthcoming titles from DC Ink—the publisher’s new young adult graphic novel line. DC Ink books feature thought-provoking stories for readers ages 13+ that focus on everyday aspirations, struggles and triumphs. The current DC Ink slate for fall 2019 includes HARLEY QUINN: BREAKING GLASS from Mariko Tamaki and Steve Pugh, and Marie Lu’s BATMAN: NIGHTWALKER prose novel adapted in graphic form by Stuart Moore with art by Chris Wildgoose.
