She Burns Brightly

Huzzah! I designed Amaterasu!!! Design ramblings and lore bits under the cut. :D

When designing her, I knew I wanted Amaterasu to look mostly mobian, but semi human as well, and also just funky alien looking. She's a goddess, she's not gonna really look like normal people! So she's got a round face but no muzzle, a human looking nose but it's a bit off, cat-like ears, and hair that blends seamlessly into her head.

I knew from the get go that I wanted her to have a bandage wrapped around the left side of her face. Why? Because of some lore I've been crafting. >:) When writing my Sonic mythos, I really like to lean into the super BIZARRE things that happen in irl mythoses. Thus I decided that in order to give the Sol Dimension light, Amaterasu took out her own eye and crafted it into the sun. That's what the bandage is for! She's also got some other bandages across her body because I wanted to show that life has not exactly been easy for our girl. (Remember how I said Amaterasu has trauma, she's just better at processing it than Solaris?)

Also decided to give Amaterasu some funky wings for fun. I love wings, but I wanted these to be sorta magical. They're made of metal and they're not actually attached to her, though they are magically bound to her. I'm thinking the sections of her wings can also break apart and form into different shapes, like a shield or a scythe.

For her dress, I decided to lean as much as I could into the colors for Burning Blaze, since that form is Blaze essentially using Amaterasu's powers after all. Bright red for the dress itself and a warm yellow-orange for the sashes. Also added some gold thingies at the shoulders to secure the sashes.

Just answering a question on one of my posts from earlier.

Mobius as a name is ONLY from the Archie comics. Its never been used in the games to refer to the planet.

And hilariously, if you've read the comics, Mobius is literally just Earth but a futuristic, post-apocalyptic one similar to the OVA. They changed the planet's name because I guess in the comic's timeline, everyone forgot all of Earth's name and history after an alien race came and destroyed human civilization.

Yeah, this makes sense. All of this.

For me personally, I use both in my writing, but Gaia is more common. This is because I'm a much newer Sonic fan and I was introduced to both in a relatively short time span. So, when I started writing fics for Sonic, I worldbuilded a bit to decide which to use and Gaia made more sense to be more prominent. Chaos seems to have gone largely forgotten by the majority of the world, and Gaia has multiple temples across the planet.

But again, I totally understand using Chaos more.

I was just thinking about a Sonic post I saw one time that was something about how, when writing what characters say, replacing God with Chaos annoys them or smth because it doesn't make as much sense as Gaia (using when Surge said "Sweet Gaia below, does this guy ever shut up?!" as an example) and like. Yeah. I get it. I can agree. But also in terms of when certain video games were released, Chaos existed before Gaia. Which means everyone was used to using Chaos in place of God instead of Gaia. And then most people (including me) saw this in fics or whatever and decided to use this too and since using Gaia never occured to us we also got used to using Chaos.

So while I acknowledge it makes more sense, it just feels weird to even consider using Gaia instead since I'm so used to using Chaos

I made a joke to @dj-bayeux-tapestry about having a dumb idea for a new installment of the Sonic storybook Series (The one with Sonic & the Secret Rings and Sonic & the Black Knight) based on the works of Lovecraft, since they're PD and all, and she actually made a convincing argument that that would be a legit good idea.

Quoting her, with her permission:

the sonic storybook games are kind of about like... sonic breaking and undermining the outdated themes of these stories by just being himself turning one thousand and one nights into a story about telling your abusive boyfriend to fuck off, and turning the arthurian cycle into a story about moving on and letting the glorious past die so i could easily see sonic storybook lovecraft being a story about pushing through fear of the unknown and welcoming those different from yourself whole section where he like stops to talk to the innsmouth people and realizes theyre actually totally chill

Like, I kinda would love that now. Someone at Sega should make that.

The Mephiles fight is just SO fascinating when you take my Sonic-verse into account. Because in my Sonic-verse, Solaris reformed after 06 (greatly weakened, but he's slowly recovering). But even though he's been reformed, he's still got that part of himself that became Mephiles inside of him. The part that's bitter at Soleana and Shadow and humanity and everyone who's ever wronged him. And he's aware of everything "he" did as Mephiles and everything he thought and wanted.

Mephiles being part time god was aware of how he'd been pulled through time and knew that defeating Shadow would ensure he got to stay in the timeline this time. Solaris is also aware that Mephiles knew all of this. He's painfully aware of Mephiles' desperate desire to exist. He tries to reassure himself with the fact that he does exist. He's whole again. But he doesn't exist as Mephiles, and he's not sure if Mephiles would be happy with the state he's in now.

It's so fun and confusing. :D Solaris "is" Mephiles the same way Mephiles "is" Solaris. They're the same person and yet they're so different at the time, with different personalities, goals, and values. They're a part of each other.
