How SCADA Works?

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are critical in managing and monitoring industrial processes across various industries, including manufacturing, utilities, transportation, and energy.
Field Devices
At the process level, field devices like sensors, meters, and actuators are used to monitor variables like voltage, flow, temperature, and pressure. These gadgets collect information and carry out system-directed operations.
Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
The SCADA software and the field devices are connected by RTUs and PLCs. After gathering information from the sensors, they transmit it to the control center. Additionally, the SCADA system may send them orders to modify settings or control actuators.
Communication Infrastructure
Strong communication networks are necessary for SCADA to transmit data between the control center and field equipment. This infrastructure can be wireless (such as satellite, radio, and cellular networks) or wired (such as Ethernet and fiber optics).
Centralized Control Station
SCADA software, which analyzes data, creates visualizations, and gives operators tools to monitor and manage operations, is housed in the control station.
Human-Machine Interface (HMI)
The SCADA system's user interface is called the HMI. Operators can engage with the system and make well-informed decisions because to its graphical depictions of processes, warnings, and trends.

idk if people on tumblr know about this but a cybersecurity software called crowdstrike just did what is probably the single biggest fuck up in any sector in the past 10 years. it's monumentally bad. literally the most horror-inducing nightmare scenario for a tech company.
some info, crowdstrike is essentially an antivirus software for enterprises. which means normal laypeople cant really get it, they're for businesses and organisations and important stuff.
so, on a friday evening (it of course wasnt friday everywhere but it was friday evening in oceania which is where it first started causing damage due to europe and na being asleep), crowdstrike pushed out an update to their windows users that caused a bug.
before i get into what the bug is, know that friday evening is the worst possible time to do this because people are going home. the weekend is starting. offices dont have people in them. this is just one of many perfectly placed failures in the rube goldburg machine of crowdstrike. there's a reason friday is called 'dont push to live friday' or more to the point 'dont fuck it up friday'
so, at 3pm at friday, an update comes rolling into crowdstrike users which is automatically implemented. this update immediately causes the computer to blue screen of death. very very bad. but it's not simply a 'you need to restart' crash, because the computer then gets stuck into a boot loop.
this is the worst possible thing because, in a boot loop state, a computer is never really able to get to a point where it can do anything. like download a fix. so there is nothing crowdstrike can do to remedy this death update anymore. it is now left to the end users.
it was pretty quickly identified what the problem was. you had to boot it in safe mode, and a very small file needed to be deleted. or you could just rename crowdstrike to something else so windows never attempts to use it.
it's a fairly easy fix in the grand scheme of things, but the issue is that it is effecting enterprises. which can have a looooot of computers. in many different locations. so an IT person would need to manually fix hundreds of computers, sometimes in whole other cities and perhaps even other countries if theyre big enough.
another fuck up crowdstrike did was they did not stagger the update, so they could catch any mistakes before they wrecked havoc. (and also how how HOW do you not catch this before deploying it. this isn't a code oopsie this is a complete failure of quality ensurance that probably permeates the whole company to not realise their update was an instant kill). they rolled it out to everyone of their clients in the world at the same time.
and this seems pretty hilarious on the surface. i was havin a good chuckle as eftpos went down in the store i was working at, chaos was definitely ensuring lmao. im in aus, and banking was literally down nationwide.
but then you start hearing about the entire country's planes being grounded because the airport's computers are bricked. and hospitals having no computers anymore. emergency call centres crashing. and you realised that, wow. crowdstrike just killed people probably. this is literally the worst thing possible for a company like this to do.
crowdstrike was kinda on the come up too, they were starting to become a big name in the tech world as a new face. but that has definitely vanished now. to fuck up at this many places, is almost extremely impressive. its hard to even think of a comparable fuckup.
a friday evening simultaneous rollout boot loop is a phrase that haunts IT people in their darkest hours. it's the monster that drags people down into the swamp. it's the big bag in the horror movie. it's the end of the road. and for crowdstrike, that reaper of souls just knocked on their doorstep.

Exploring Non-Construction Industries That Benefit from an Estimating Service
Introduction Estimating services are often associated with the construction industry, but their value extends well beyond that. Various non-construction industries can also leverage estimating services to streamline operations, improve financial forecasting, and enhance decision-making processes. Whether it’s manufacturing, healthcare, or technology, estimating services can bring significant benefits across different sectors.
Manufacturing and Production In manufacturing, accurate cost estimates are crucial for ensuring that products are made efficiently and profitably. Estimating services help manufacturers predict the costs of raw materials, labor, machinery, and overhead. This level of precision helps businesses remain competitive by optimizing production costs, ensuring that they do not exceed budget constraints. By forecasting the costs associated with each step of the production process, manufacturers can identify areas where improvements or cost-saving measures are possible.
Healthcare and Medical Equipment The healthcare industry, particularly in medical equipment manufacturing and hospital construction, relies heavily on estimating services. Accurate cost estimates allow hospitals and medical institutions to plan their budgets effectively, whether for building new facilities or purchasing new equipment. Estimating services help predict the cost of materials, labor, and operational costs for both new construction and renovations. Additionally, in the medical equipment sector, estimating services can aid in forecasting production costs, allowing manufacturers to price their products appropriately while remaining competitive.
Technology and Software Development In technology and software development, estimating services are used to predict the cost of developing a product or service. From initial concept to finished product, accurate cost estimates help companies manage their budgets, allocate resources efficiently, and avoid cost overruns. Estimating services can also aid in predicting the cost of integrating new technologies, purchasing necessary software, and staffing requirements. The ability to accurately forecast costs at each stage of development helps companies stay on track and ensure that they deliver their products on time and within budget.
Retail and E-commerce Retailers and e-commerce businesses benefit from estimating services when it comes to inventory management and supply chain optimization. By predicting the costs associated with manufacturing, shipping, and stocking products, estimating services help businesses ensure that they can fulfill customer demand without overspending. Accurate cost estimates help these businesses negotiate better deals with suppliers and distributors, while also enabling them to plan for seasonal fluctuations in demand.
Energy and Utilities Energy companies, especially those involved in renewable energy projects or infrastructure upgrades, rely on estimating services for cost forecasting. Estimators help predict the costs of materials, labor, permits, and equipment required for energy infrastructure projects. Whether it's a solar power farm or the installation of new pipelines, estimating services provide valuable insights that help project teams stay within budget and avoid unforeseen expenses. These services are particularly important in the energy sector, where projects can span multiple years and involve complex logistical considerations.
Government and Public Sector Projects The government sector is another area where estimating services can be invaluable. Whether it’s for infrastructure projects, public building renovations, or the implementation of new programs, estimating services help public agencies create accurate budgets, allocate resources, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Accurate cost estimates are essential for ensuring taxpayer money is spent wisely and that public projects deliver on their promises without financial mismanagement.
Education and Institutional Planning In the education sector, estimating services are used to forecast the costs of building new campuses, upgrading existing facilities, or implementing educational programs. Schools and universities rely on estimating services to plan budgets for construction, technology upgrades, and educational resources. Accurate estimates help administrators make informed decisions about allocating funds for new programs, expanding infrastructure, or making campus-wide improvements.
Transportation and Logistics In the transportation and logistics industry, estimating services help companies predict the costs of fleet maintenance, fuel, and shipping operations. By forecasting transportation-related costs, companies can optimize their supply chains, negotiate better rates with suppliers and partners, and ensure that they are pricing their services competitively. Estimating services also assist in the planning of major transportation infrastructure projects, such as highways, railways, and ports, where accurate cost predictions are essential for securing funding and staying within budget.
Food Production and Agriculture Agriculture and food production industries benefit from estimating services by predicting the costs of raw materials, labor, equipment, and transportation. Accurate cost forecasting ensures that businesses can price their products effectively, avoid overproduction, and maintain profitability. Estimating services also help agricultural businesses plan for seasonal fluctuations in production costs, allowing them to adapt to market demands and mitigate financial risks.
Real Estate Development and Property Management While real estate development is often tied to construction, estimating services are equally valuable for property management companies. Estimators help property managers forecast maintenance costs, predict future capital expenditures, and create long-term financial plans for their portfolios. For real estate developers, estimating services offer insights into land acquisition costs, zoning regulations, and building costs, ensuring that they can effectively budget and avoid surprises during the development process.
Conclusion Estimating services are not limited to the construction industry. Non-construction sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, technology, retail, energy, and others can also benefit from accurate cost forecasting. By incorporating estimating services into their financial and operational planning, businesses across industries can improve efficiency, reduce waste, and make smarter, more cost-effective decisions.

How Customer Loyalty Programs Drive Growth And Retention For Manufacturers?
Customer loyalty is not an option for manufacturing businesses—it's a necessity. With the existence of high competition and rising customer expectations, long-term relationships and customer retention can be the game-changer for a business. A robust customer loyalty program can make customer retention, repeat business, and brand loyalty possible for manufacturers. In this blog, we talk about how loyalty programs are driving growth and retention for manufacturers and why they're a secret to success for manufacturers.
Why Customer Loyalty Matters in Manufacturing
In contrast to retail businesses, whose clients have direct transactions, manufacturing businesses usually have B2B arrangements. This is the reason why customer loyalty is the pillar of the industry:
Longer Sales Cycles – It is expensive and time-consuming to acquire a customer in manufacturing. It is more expensive to acquire new customers than to retain existing customers through loyalty programs.
Repeat Business – Reorder of raw materials, parts, or finished goods is required for most firms. Bulk purchases and long-term agreements can be facilitated using a loyalty scheme.
Stronger Partnerships – A loyalty program creates stronger and more trusting relationships between manufacturers and customers, and ultimately results in long-term partnerships.
Benefits Customer Loyalty Programs Offer to Manufacturing Companies
A well-run loyalty program has several benefits that benefit a manufacturer's bottom line. Here's why:
1. Best Customer Retention
Recurring purchases reward customers for returning, which drives customer retention levels higher. Rewards such as promotions, discounts, or special treatment can encourage customers to stay and be loyal to the business.
2. Increasing Repeat Purchases
Those customers registered under a scheme of loyalty tend to repeat purchases. For firms that manufacture, cashback or points on multiple orders motivate the customers to return for future orders.
3. Developing Brand Loyalty
A loyalty scheme helps to make a stronger link between consumers and producers. Such companies that give rewards to their consumers at some interval make their consumers feel confident and reliable and hence are not likely to shift to a different company.
4. Encourages Spending Growth
Through tiered loyalty programs, consumers are urged to spend more to receive more benefits. For instance, producers may offer greater discounts or exclusive offers on products for consumers who make a specific expenditure.
5. Enhancing Customer Insights
The loyalty program software supplies data on buying behavior, consumer buying habits, and preferences. The producers use this information to tailor offers, enhance production, and improve customer experience.
6. Developing a Competitive Advantage
There must be differentiation in the competitive manufacturing business. A solid loyalty program differentiates a company from others, giving customers one more reason to be loyal.
7. Referral and Word-of-Mouth Marketing
Manufacturing businesses can incorporate referral rewards into their loyalty programs. Current customers are incentivized to bring in new customers, and through this, the business can grow its customer base naturally.
Key Features of an Effective Manufacturing Loyalty Program
To optimize the potential of a loyalty program, manufacturers must include the following characteristics:
Simple Registration: An easy registration process ensures high turnout.
Flexible Reward Options: Offer rebates, discounts, free upgrades, or an early chance to purchase new products.
Personalized Incentives: Leverage customer information to personalize rewards on a per-shopping behavior level.
Multi-Tier System: Spend more by implementing tiered rewards.
Integration with ERP and CRM: Integration with current systems enhances efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Conclusion
Customer loyalty programs are no longer exclusive to stores but are a business game-changer for manufacturers as well. With a strategic loyalty program, manufacturers can enhance customer retention, encourage repeat business, and develop long-term business relationships. Long-term investment in loyalty management platforms and the use of loyalty program software guarantee smooth operations and optimal interaction. When manufacturing companies have loyalty programs, they are likely to succeed in the event of sustainable growth and long-term profitability. It is time to create a loyalty program that converts customers into loyal champions and guarantees future profitability for the manufacturing industry.

Common Pitfalls in Industrial Estimating Service and How to Avoid Them
Industrial estimating service is a crucial aspect of project planning, helping businesses determine accurate costs for materials, labor, equipment, and unforeseen expenses. However, even experienced estimators can make costly mistakes that lead to budget overruns, project delays, and financial losses. Understanding these pitfalls and how to avoid them can significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of cost estimates.
1. Inaccurate or Incomplete Project Data
One of the most common pitfalls in industrial estimating is relying on incomplete or outdated project data. Without accurate information on material costs, labor rates, and project specifications, estimators may produce unreliable cost estimates.
How to Avoid It:
Gather detailed project requirements, including material specifications, site conditions, and workforce needs.
Use up-to-date cost databases and historical project data to ensure accuracy.
Collaborate closely with engineers, contractors, and suppliers to obtain precise information.
2. Underestimating Material Costs
Material prices fluctuate due to market conditions, inflation, and supply chain disruptions. Underestimating these costs can lead to budget shortfalls and procurement issues.
How to Avoid It:
Monitor market trends and material price changes regularly.
Include a contingency budget to account for unexpected price increases.
Work with reliable suppliers to secure competitive pricing and reduce cost variations.
3. Overlooking Labor Productivity Rates
Failing to account for labor productivity variations can result in inaccurate labor cost estimates. Factors such as worker skill levels, site conditions, and project complexity affect productivity.
How to Avoid It:
Use industry benchmarks and historical data to estimate labor productivity accurately.
Adjust labor estimates based on the complexity and location of the project.
Consider potential delays caused by weather conditions, union regulations, and workforce availability.
4. Ignoring Project-Specific Risks
Every industrial project has unique risks, including regulatory compliance, environmental factors, and equipment failures. Ignoring these risks can lead to unexpected expenses.
How to Avoid It:
Conduct a thorough risk assessment before finalizing estimates.
Include contingency funds for unforeseen challenges.
Stay informed about industry regulations and environmental requirements.
5. Inconsistent Use of Estimating Software
Many companies rely on estimating software, but inconsistent or incorrect usage can lead to errors. Misinputted data or outdated software can affect cost projections.
How to Avoid It:
Ensure estimators are trained in using the latest estimating software.
Regularly update cost databases and software settings.
Cross-check manual calculations with software-generated estimates for accuracy.
6. Failure to Factor in Inflation and Supply Chain Disruptions
Inflation and supply chain issues can significantly impact industrial project costs. Overlooking these factors may result in underestimated budgets.
How to Avoid It:
Include an inflation adjustment factor in long-term projects.
Diversify supply chain options to mitigate material shortages.
Monitor global economic trends to anticipate cost fluctuations.
7. Not Revisiting and Updating Estimates
Cost estimates should not be treated as fixed numbers. Failing to revise estimates as the project progresses can lead to discrepancies between budgeted and actual costs.
How to Avoid It:
Conduct regular cost reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
Adjust estimates based on real-time project updates.
Maintain clear communication between project managers, estimators, and financial teams.
8. Overlooking Hidden Costs
Hidden costs, such as equipment maintenance, transportation, and compliance fees, can add up over time. Ignoring these expenses can cause financial strain.
How to Avoid It:
Break down estimates into detailed cost components, including indirect expenses.
Identify all potential cost factors, including permits, inspections, and logistics.
Account for additional site preparation or unforeseen environmental adjustments.
9. Lack of Collaboration Between Teams
Poor communication between estimators, engineers, contractors, and suppliers can lead to misunderstandings and inaccurate estimates.
How to Avoid It:
Foster collaboration between all project stakeholders.
Organize regular meetings to align expectations and verify data accuracy.
Encourage transparency in cost estimation processes.
10. Unrealistic Schedule Assumptions
Underestimating project timelines can result in rushed work, increased labor costs, and missed deadlines. Delays can further inflate costs due to extended equipment rentals and idle labor.
How to Avoid It:
Develop realistic timelines based on past project experiences.
Account for potential weather disruptions, permitting delays, and supply chain issues.
Plan schedules with buffer time to absorb unforeseen delays.
Conclusion
Industrial estimating service is a fundamental part of project planning, but common pitfalls can undermine its effectiveness. By ensuring accurate data collection, monitoring market trends, integrating risk management strategies, and improving collaboration, businesses can enhance the reliability of their cost estimates. Avoiding these pitfalls will lead to better financial control, improved project efficiency, and reduced risk of budget overruns.
