The next few weeks were hard for (Y/N) to stay focused. “(Y/N), are you alright? Every time I’ve talked to you recently you haven’t really heard anything I say.”
“I’m so sorry, Anya,” she sighed. “I guess I have a lot to think about.”
Anya rolled over on her bed to face her bunkmate, resting her chin on her hands. “What’s going on? I’m asking as a friend, not as some sterile clinician trying to conduct a psychological study.”
(Y/N) laughed at that, unsure if Anya was saying that as a joke or if she was self-aware of how monotonous she always gets when reading off the questions she asks every week. “You’ve been on the Tulpar with this crew for how long now?”
“Give or take six to seven years. At least with Swansea and Captain Curly. Jimmy was a new addition a year or two ago. This was a job to give me some income and clinical experience as I was studying and applying for medical school.”
“I see. Do you feel particularly close with the two of them? Or even Jimmy?” (Y/N) was on her side now, facing Anya.
“Swansea is like a father figure to me. A rough one for sure, but for a couple of months in between trips I’ve babysat his kids in between taking and retaking the MCAT. He’s been supportive of me in his own way. I never could get close to the captain. There’s just a power dynamic there that makes it a strictly professional relationship. As for Jimmy… he’s off-putting to me, but I can’t quite put a finger on why. He just gives me the creeps.”
She nodded, agreeing with Anya about Jimmy. There was something uncomfortable about him but she was relieved that their interactions stayed minimal. Revisiting what she had to say about Curly, however, her mind wandered. There had been a power dynamic between the two of them for sure, in addition to a little bit of an age gap, but the more they talked, the more their interactions mirrored that of old friends. Their conversation flowed so easily and never resorted to small talk, as it did when she was forced to interact with Jimmy.
“Why did you ask?” Anya cut her out of her thoughts.
“Oh, I don’t know. As one of the new ones here I’m trying to figure out my place in this crew. That’s all.” (Y/N) said vaguely. “I’m so grateful to have you here, Anya. You’ve been such a great friend to me ever since I joined, and it’s such a relief to at least have another woman here.”
Anya chuckled, “I understand. Sometimes there’s just too much testosterone on this ship. I’m glad you’re here too.”
Ending their conversation shortly after, (Y/N) got up to turn the lights off and the two went to bed. Lying down, sleep didn’t find her easily as her mind swarmed. After truly getting to know him, (Y/N) found Curly nothing but kind, gentle, compassionate, and easy to talk to; the fact that he was so handsome was an added bonus. She was stuck on what to do from here. Something she knew about herself was that it was so easy for people to read the emotions right off her face– it was always hard for (Y/N) to hide her feelings. There was no way he could find out how she felt – for one, he was technically her boss, but also she knew that if he knew, that would be another added responsibility on his end not to hurt her feelings and keep civil for the entire year they were out in space.
So she stayed away as much as she could, sitting at least one person away from him during group meals, keeping conversations short and light, going to bed earlier rather than staying in the lounge late in the evenings to do work or relax.
Several times, Curly would try to seek her out to check in and see how she was doing, or just start a conversation with her, but she would give him terse answers and make up excuses, saying that Swansea needed her or that she needed to check something somewhere. This would leave Curly dejected and confused.
One day, it was getting hot in the utility room as (Y/N) moved equipment around to organise. With the few major things she needed to take care of out of the way today, she offered to help Swansea with whatever he needed while he and Daisuke “cleaned up the mess that Numbnuts over here made over by the hallway”, as he put it. The mess he was referring to was a bit of foam that escaped from a pipe that Daisuke hit after getting too excited about Swansea letting him screw the pipes shut all by himself. They both left, Swansea grumbling and holding the axe to cut away at the foam and Daisuke with a rubbish bag saying, “clean up on aisle four!”
Wiping the sweat off her brow, she unzipped her work jumper halfway and shed the long sleeves of the top part, tying it securely around her waist. Underneath she chose to wear a simple white tank top today, which worked well to her advantage. Squatting down to pick up a particularly heavy box, she let out a heave as she lifted it up, turning around to be met with the sight of Curly at the door.
Flustered in the state she was in, she nearly dropped the box. “C-Captain! You startled me. What are you doing here? Are you looking for Swansea? He and Daisuke shouldn’t be too far. They just left to clean up some foam that escaped from a pipe. They won’t be long, I think.” (Y/N) rapid-fire answered without a word from the captain. While doing so she missed the glint in his eye. He walked over to her to pick up the heavy box out of her arms as she motioned where it needed to be.
“Actually, I was on my way to the cockpit when I noticed the utility room door open and saw you in here. I feel like we haven’t really talked in a while. Are you okay?” He frowned.
“What do you mean? Of course I am. And you talk to me all the time – I’m always bumping into you and have been getting better about eating meals with everyone. We talk then, too. Things have just been busy lately, that’s all.” She said nervously.
Curly narrowed his eyes at her and walked right up in front of her, staring her down. “I feel like you’ve been avoiding me lately. What happened?”
The closer he got to (Y/N), the more she backed away until she was cornered by a cryo pod. “N-Nothing! I swear I wouldn’t avoid you!” She lied. His proximity was making her feel hotter and she could feel her face burning up, and the awareness of her blush only made her more flustered because of it.
He put a hand on the pod behind her, effectively caging her in. “Hmm, bullshit.” She had never heard him swear before, but hearing it now for the first time turned her on in a way she didn’t want to admit. “You know,” he started. “A few weeks ago as I was going to the lounge I heard Daisuke yell out something interesting. Something about you wanting to do something with me?” He raised an eyebrow. “Know anything about that, hm?” Dammit, Daisuke, she knew he was being too loud.
Panicked, she didn’t know what to do in this situation. She could continue to lie through her teeth, as unsuccessful as that was already, or rip off the bandaid and admit it, apologise profusely, and sign her will before she died from an overdose of embarrassment. But before she could utter a weak excuse, Curly answered for her, his gaze growing softer with his voice.
“Tell me, please, if you don’t want this, I’ll leave. I’ll pretend this never happened and apologise for misreading the signals. We’ll go back to how we were before all of this.” His eyes grew half-lidded as he bent his neck down, bringing his face closer to hers. “Do you want this?”
“Yes.” She said shakily. Slowly, he cupped his hand around her face, gentle and cautious. Hot breath fanned at her lips before slowly pressing against hers gingerly, like he was trying to savour something decadent. His other hand moved to her waist, pulling her closer to him as she wrapped both arms around his neck, standing on her toes now to push more of herself into him. Swiping her tongue over his bottom lip, he let out a content sigh, deepening the kiss even further. Every small sound she made only made him hungrier for more, and Curly swore if they continued he would never want to stop. Breaking off the kiss, he looked down at her, pupils dilated and lips flush and swollen.
“I don’t think I could get enough of you,” he panted. Just as they were about to go in for another kiss, the loud voice of Daisuke could be heard echoing through the halls, indicating that Swansea and him had finished cleaning up the foam and were headed back. Wordlessly, Curly placed one last kiss on her lips with a tender look and quickly slipped out to go to the cockpit before he got caught.
“Jeez, that took forever! I promise I’ll be more careful next time, Swansea. Clearing out the foam is tedious work. Oh hey (Y/N) how’s it going? Damn, you must’ve worked up a sweat moving all of those boxes because you look hot! Eugh, that came out weird I swear I mean like the temp–”
Speechless from what had just transpired, (Y/N) left the utility room.

Summary: In which Prowl, certain of sabotage to his vital office equipment, seeks an emergency alternative to his malfunctioning stimulant brewer.

The chronometer screaming bright red digits into the early morning darkness of Prowl’s office tried to tell him he had stayed up far too late.
Another night of unpaid overtime.
Prowl’s level of seniority in the slowly demilitarizing Autobot-Neutral coalition government on New Cybertron meant he no longer qualified for it; his level of responsibility was too great for his time alone to affect the budgets beyond a baseline salary.
None of that stopped him from working more than the schedule strictly demanded. There was too much to do and none of it would get done if he didn’t personally do it or dictate to someone else exactly how it needed to be accomplished. That would be the only way anything would get done and get done right.
Setting down one of the datapads he had been transcribing report data from, Prowl took a routine look at the fuel mug on his desk. Given the thin film of stimulant-laced fuel glowing sadly at the bottom of the mug, it was time to top it up. Another cup of adulterated fuel would give him the boost he needed to make it to sunrise.
The brewing machine was, of course, waiting faithfully on the other side of his office, stationed on a shelf over a cabinet full of supplies. Cubes of plain fuel were stacked neatly in the cabinet, but that was the only tidy aspect of the set up.
Other accouterments were scattered about the cabinet and shelf in disarray. Half-open stimulant syrup packets leaked onto surfaces until they had dehydrated into a glue-like adhesive. Flecks of other additives were sprinkled here and there, in some places stuck in the stimulant-glue and in others forming a tacky dust.
Prowl had, once upon a time, tried to keep his stimulant preparation area in some semblance of order, but, as everything had worn on over the years, it had become… lower priority.
With a sigh, he brushed aside some of the clutter that had tried to attach to the brewer’s carafe. One of the gluey remained adhered until he picked it off. A blob of residue lingered on the glass.
It was fine.
A problem for another time.
Or the cleaning staff if he ever felt comfortable letting them in here. Who knew what alternative motives they could have had? Who knew who they were really working for?
A small amount of fuel remained in the carafe, long cold and scorched.
Prowl simply poured that minuscule remainder into his mouth before setting the carafe up for a fresh brewing cycle. The brewer’s additives and syrup holders were refilled to meet his specifications. The brewing cycle’s settings were dialed. Everything would be just like it was supposed to be every other time.
However, when Prowl pressed the power button… nothing happened. Again and again, he tried the button, in case it was just faulty. Something was deeply wrong.
This brewer had served him faithfully for many years now. There was no reason it would simply give up now. There was no other explanation but the obvious.
Sabotage.
Standing in front of the quiet, dark brewer, Prowl could feel the impending embrace of exhaustion pulling at the edges of his consciousness.
Without this brewer and its products, Prowl’s energy levels would never get him to sunrise in several hours. Someone had clearly managed to bypass all of the security measures on his office to interfere with his work, someone who would benefit from even the slightest interruption in the review of incoming data.
The situation had to be rectified immediately. Before he could even begin to search for the infiltrator responsible for this unabashed assault on his professional competency.
It was too late at night to submit a proper requisition request through the appropriate official channels. Emergency measures were required.
Only one viable option was left remaining to him.
Vagueslist, a gray market Extranet network of independent “vendors” selling various goods and services with minimal audit trails, was Prowl’s only recourse.
Of course, he knew the risks; there were many. They ran the gambit from a defective product to minor scams to inexperienced money laundering fronts to bait for trafficking. There was also the more personally applicable chance that there wasn’t someone selling what he was looking for in the immediate area. Unlikely, given the website’s vast, morally flexible userbase.
Prowl rushed back to his desk, frantically tapping the necessary commands into his console with more strokes to rectify hastily mistyped keys than he would have ever admitted to in a court of law.
Typically, this website was a tool his department used for investigative purposes, sometimes even setting up fake offers or requests to bait criminals or suspects or otherwise chasing down leads. Tonight, however, Prowl looked through the ugly bulletin board in earnest, cycling through various keywords in the search function.
Very few results popped up, at least within Iacon’s city limits. Sure, he could drive farther but time before the inescapable exhaustion kicked in was steadily ticking away. He only had so much time and he couldn’t afford to drive for an hour or two round trip, let alone one way.
One result, however, stood out to him.
“Free Stimulant Brewr, Good cOndition, As Is”
The typos and shanix symbols plastered throughout the title were typical of offers on this platform. Allegedly, they had just gotten a newer, better one to replace the freebie. Critically, the location was a precious few neighborhoods away. The item was left out on the “seller’s” balcony for pick up by whomever wanted it whenever was convenient.
Including the middle of the night.
Prowl didn’t even bother responding to the ad. It wouldn’t matter. It was free and out there for the grabbing anyway.
It didn’t even matter was model it was, only that it would work.
His wheels protested as he tore through the darkened streets, following his GPS to the coordinates in the ad.
He could only hope that some other desperate mech hadn’t also seen the ad and already swiped up the machine. This was his only chance, the one shot he had to defeat the impending exhaustion brought upon him by the sabotage of his own brewer.
There was no time left for any alternatives.

Prowl skidded to a stop around a corner. The address should have been the building in front of him, so close….
Up upon a balcony four levels up, lit only by a flickering, undervolting lantern, sat what looked to be his prize: a free, “gently used” brewer.
It would be faster to scale the structure rather than go around to try and find public access stairs. Time was ticking and exhaustion was still creeping into his mind.
Hand over hand, Prowl awkwardly pulled himself up onto the first railing to reach for lower edge of the balcony just overhead.
He could do this. He had to do this.
Clenching his jaw shut, he climbed, disregarding the fact that he could easily be mistaken for some kind of degenerate prowler, bent on either thievery or mischief.
After a few minutes of struggling, he was nearly in reach of the brewer. He stretched his hand out towards his prize, the cheap material of the brewer’s casing gleaming in the light of the weak lantern. It would be his—
Just as his hand closed on the far side of the brewer, a loud sniffing noise came from nearby, like a creature snuffling about in the garbage looking for choice refuse. He paused, barely hanging onto the balcony by one shaking arm.
What appeared to be a rotund mechanimal, about the size of small cassetticon and variegated gray and black in color, sat on the balcony’s ledge, near the brewer as it preened dust and debris from the articulated plating of its banded tail. Its paws were more like hands, meant clearly for climbing and committing all manner of crimes.
The glint in its optics as it stared at Prowl promised hijinks.
“No,” he told the creature, certain in his exhaustion that it cared for whatever he had to say. “That’s mine.”
As though to spite him, the creature put its terrible little hands on the sides of the brewer, pulling it away.
“Stop! Thief!”

However, he could not celebrate his victory.
Prowl found air rushing up around him… before he and the brewer collided with the road below the balcony.

It had taken an act of iron will to not fall asleep in a heap after his… gravity-induced setback.
Thankfully, his new brewer had survived impact, having been cradled safely under Prowl’s bumper.
Slapping the access codes to his office into the panel next to the door, Prowl himself had been grateful to escape the encounter with just scrapes and dents… and sore struts.
Exhaustion continued to creep into his processor. Automated alerts requesting that he recharge were dismissed with a self-executing macro that he had set up ages ago, but even now Prowl couldn’t deny that his processing speed was suffering from the lack of recharge, the lack of stimulant-laced fuel. The focal rings in his optics kept spiraling out, making his vision intermittently fuzzy while his processor struggled to adjust the calculations to resolve the feed.
When the door finally opened after several tries of the code, he staggered across towards where his old, sabotaged brewer waited.
With a wave of his arm, he knocked items off the shelf, clearing space for the new brewer. Accouterments and paraphernalia clattered to the floor as he set his prize down.
Prowl grabbed the old brewer, lifting it up as he prepared to sacrifice it to the floor. One thing, however, caught his eye.
The power cable of the old brewer dangled down, disconnected from the wall socket.
Prowl squinted, taking the cable and plugging its jack back into the wall.
With a cheerful beep, the brewer powered on, telling Prowl it was ready to make him however much warm stimulant he wanted.
It wasn’t the upending of Prowl’s desk that summoned the security guards, but the echoing howl that accompanied it.

During the 1990s, Mexico’s government, opposition parties, and civil society changed the country’s political system. The one-party state that had prevailed for more than 70 years was no longer enough to accommodate the demands of an increasingly complex society, and a larger, more educated middle class started demanding political pluralism.
The then-ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) made legal reforms to allow Mexico’s political system to open and democratize, permitting more political representation in local governments and Congress. It also created autonomous institutions such as the Federal Electoral Institute to transfer political decision-making powers to agencies that followed technical guidelines. In 2000, an opposition presidential candidate won Mexico’s presidency for the first time since the Mexican Revolution.
This brief period of liberal, constitutional democracy was halted in 2018 by Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s presidential election victory. It was fully overthrown in June’s general election, when a coalition led by López Obrador’s Morena party gained the presidency for the second time, in addition to earning majorities in Mexico’s legislature. Morena swiftly proceeded to disfigure Mexico’s judiciary, and in the coming weeks, the remaining autonomous government agencies—including the Federal Economic Competition Commission, Federal Telecommunications Institute, and the national transparency institute—are likely to become compliant and subservient branches of the party as well.
From the start of his administration, López Obrador has pursued an agenda of institutional destruction. He has couched his de-institutional intentions in claims about the shortcomings of neoliberalism, both real and made up, claiming that he is simply remedying Mexico’s broken political system. Contrary to popular belief, however, López Obrador has not centralized power in the presidency—an institutional podium—but in himself and his chosen successors, including the incoming president, and his son, who is now seeking the Morena party leadership.
In June, López Obrador’s protégé, Claudia Sheinbaum, won the presidency by a landslide, securing more than 60 percent of votes. She will take office on Oct. 1, when López Obrador—who was term-limited from seeking reelection—will formally step down. But the new Congress, where the Morena-led alliance earned a majority, was inaugurated on Sept. 1, leaving him one final month to advance his legislative agenda before Sheinbaum takes over.
The election made it clear that many Mexicans are comfortable with a political system that concentrates power on one person at the expense of pluralism and dialogue. A 2023 study by the Pew Research Center found that 50 percent of Mexicans support being ruled by a “strong leader without judicial or legislative checks.” Yet as president, Sheinbaum won’t continue advancing the institutional collapse initiated by her political mentor. Instead, she will inherit a consummation.
The institutional demolition that began with López Obrador’s inauguration in 2018 has come to its natural outcome. The 18 constitutional reforms he proposed are not separate agenda items, but one single project with one single objective: to subvert Mexico’s political system.
In practice, there is no individual judicial, electoral, or autonomous agency reform; there is only a broader, more ambitious blow to the few remaining free spheres of political autonomy and professionalism that could not be subjugated during López Obrador’s administration. The federal judiciary and remaining autonomous agencies were the last bulwarks standing in the way of López Obrador’s radical project of de-institutionalization. The outgoing president has been successful in eradicating the basic checks and balances of the Mexican republic.
Most notorious, perhaps, is López Obrador’s radical measure undoing the judiciary, which will allow for 7,000 judges to be directly elected by popular vote in a process where all candidacies will be influenced by Morena. The creation of a discipline tribunal—with broad faculties to sanction and remove judges who deviate from a partisan interpretation of the law—is another mechanism for political control.
Although the proposal was approved by the Senate on Sept. 11, it was not a democratically made decision. The majorities in Congress needed to amend the constitution were obtained through a fraudulent interpretation of the law determining the formulas for proportional representation. Captured electoral authorities violated a constitutional provision that prohibits overrepresentation above 8 percent, giving Morena’s coalition 75 percent of the seats in Congress when it only obtained 54 percent of the vote in June’s election.
The destruction of Mexico’s judiciary is particularly concerning because of the country’s high impunity levels. Only 94 percent of crimes in Mexico are reported, and less than 1 percent are punished, according to Impunidad Cero, a think tank. Courts are the only civilized alternative to the more violent practices of self-defense that already corrode much of the country. Not having a professional and independent judiciary will anchor violence as the only resort for managing social conflicts.
It is a mistake to compare this new political regime to Mexico’s former one-party state. Although the PRI controlled the outcome of the elections during most of the 20th century and curtailed political freedoms, it was a disciplined party that built dozens of institutions and professionalized civil bureaucracies, the exact opposite agenda of Morena’s objectives.
Mexico will still function without checks and balances; an unpleasant percentage of the world’s governments are undemocratic and yet somehow functional. But on the foreign-policy front, López Obrador’s new political system will impact how international actors engage with the country.
The frantic process of de-institutionalization means that the rules of dialogue and negotiation with Mexico will be more brittle and unpredictable. Businesses, investment, and foreign agreements will become more tenuous in a political system that is more personalized, corrupt, and opaque. In short: The rule of law will not be the rule in Mexico.
Take U.S.-Mexico relations. During Mexico’s liberal democratic period, the country attempted to navigate its intricate bilateral relationship with the United States by creating rules and institutions such as bilateral agreements, independent tribunals, and professional bureaucracies. The compartmentalization of topics in the bilateral relationship was an intelligent scheme for Mexico, the weaker partner of the two. But this political design presupposed the existence of institutions on both sides of the border.
Now, the United States will have to deal with a new phenomenon—a fragile and unprofessional neighbor that will likely try to hide its weakness and authoritarianism through sporadic gifts. These might be offered as occasional tributes—the detention of drug kingpins or tighter border controls—but they will never be more than momentary palliatives to hide the new chaos and rampant ungovernability of a country with weak and politicized institutions.
The relevant takeaway for Mexico’s partners around the world is that the Mexican government is in tatters. Sheinbaum has already deployed decoys to calm international markets and partners who are worried about Mexico’s institutional collapse. Some cabinet appointments have been presented as pragmatic and technical picks, such as Marcelo Ebrard as incoming economy minister.
