“Solitude and its silence, was the song that taught me to stand in the storms that others fled, so that I could dance in the rain they only longed for.”

We live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and private: and therefore starved for meditation and true friendship.

I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don't have complete emotions about the present, only about the past.

One of the illusions is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson, Society & Solitude (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1870) (via Dylan O'Sullivan via Wait-What?)

A wild longing for strong emotions and sensations seethes in me, a rage against this tonelss, flat, normal and sterile life. I have mad impulse to smash something, a warehouse perhaps, or a cathedral, or myself. ... For what I always hated and detested and cursed above all things was this contentment, this healthiness and comfort, this carefully preserved optimism of the middle classes, this fat and propserous brood of mediocrity.
— Hermann Hesse, Steppenwolf

The Solitary Path
The man who treads his solitary path
Will never merge with the world,
Each attempt to belong
Wounds his very soul.
He prepares for life's extremes
Loneliness, a silent shadow,
Kindness, a fleeting touch,
Cruelty, a sharp reminder.
He walks his own road, steadfast.
He steps forward, knowing the cost,
Embracing isolation and the rare touch of warmth.
Each moment is a trial, each day a test,
But in his heart, he carries the truth:
The road less traveled is his alone.

I found silence to be home
I found silence to be virtue
I found silence to be comfort
I found silence to be peace
I found silence to be healer
I found silence to be the answer everybody’s searching for
In silence I found myself
I found myself in silence and in silence
I found everything that I have been looking for

Look not out, but within… Remember it is a still voice that speaks to us in this day, and that it is not to be heard in the noises and hurries of the mind; but it is distinctly understood in a retired frame. Jesus loved and chose solitudes, often going to mountains, to gardens, and sea-sides to avoid crowds and hurries; to show his disciples it was good to be solitary, and sit loose to the world.
William Penn, 1694
