853 Words; i,,,, i really don't know???
TW for death & death mention
The mantis bears down on him, and Yutaka freezes. It raises its scythe-like arms with a screech, and Yutaka has only a moment to realize that he's going to die as the blade comes down—
The mantis is slammed against a wall by a massive axe, dissolving into nothing around the blade embedded into the concrete. Yutaka flinches back, then falls backwards entirely when the owner of the axe leaps forward to grab it.
The new monster towers over him, a massive hand grabbing the handle of the axe and pulling it out of the wall. Another equally massive axe is clutched in its other hand, glinting dangerously in the sunlight. The beast turns toward him, cold brown eyes focusing on Yutaka.
This is it, Yutaka thinks, this is where I die. It's like staring into a blizzard, into a white wall of endless snow knowing that danger could come from anywhere.
The beast huffs, exhaling icy mist from its brown muzzle. It leans forwards, light glinting off its horns and the sharp ends of its dreads like sunlight off of snow. Its shaggy white fur almost seems to glisten.
Yutaka is staring death in the face. It's the only thought he can have, in front of a monster so cold and imposing.
"Ar—" The beast coughs, and were Yutaka not frozen on the spot in terror he might have found something about its squeak familiar, "Are you okay?" Its voice comes out gravelly, rough, like glaciers grinding against each other.
(Yutaka gets the odd sense that the monster is pitching its voice down. But that makes no sense.)
Yutaka sits there in slack-jawed silence, any attempts to move or speak failing him. His brain finally processes the words that were spoken to him, and he manages a strained, "yeah."
The beast stares at him, then nods. "Good." It grunts, "Let's get—"
The monster is cut off as a small figure appears beside it, suddenly seeming to manifest.
No, Yutaka realizes, staring at softly-buzzing wings, it flew into place so fast as to seem to teleport.
“We could use your help a few blocks over, Blizzarmon.” The smaller creature speaks. It looks almost human, if humans had waists so tightly cinched as to look insectoid, if humans had legs more than half as long as their bodies, if humans had bright gossamer wings buzzing softly behind them, if humans had long purple hair whipping around like a streamer.
Yutaka can’t get a read on it—not through the visor over its eyes. But as it speaks, he can’t help but lock onto a mouth full of sharp teeth. This being is dangerous, Yutaka’s instincts scream. This being could kill him effortlessly.
It’s like looking out into a storm from the eye, knowing that just beyond the walls lie utter destruction.
The beast nods, kneeling down in a position not unlike prayer. Seemingly satisfied, the fairy turns its attention to Yutaka.
“You look familiar,” it comments, its voice breezy, carefree lightness underscored with malice. It hovers closer. “Are you—” It cuts off, clasping gloved hands together. “You are! You’re Yutaka!” It flits around him in excitement.
Yutaka’s mouth opensto say what, he doesn’t know. He barely manages to exhale before the beast’s eyes snap open, the massive monster bursting into motion and flash-stepping away. The fairy gives Yutaka one last look before flying off after it, with a “Nice to meet you! Stay safe!” thrown behind it.
Yutaka stands on shaky legs, and turns to go home.
+=+=+=+=+
Tomoki's playing a game on the TV when Yutaka finally returns home, the last dregs of adrenaline fading from his system. His little brother perks up at his arrival, throwing Yutaka a greeting without quite looking away from the screen.
Yutaka switches to indoor shoes, walks over to the couch and sits down hard. Even at 20 years old, he's still shaken up by the altercation at the mall. He'd gone out looking for a particular book, and got caught up in that whole mess.
Yutaka hadn't thought much of the monsters that had been appearing as of late, writing the news off as a hoax or over exaggeration. He almost wants to turn on the news now, to see if the attack on the mall was recorded in any particular detail, but he equally wants to ignore the whole event. It's fine, everything's fine, he didn't stare death in the face at all today, and even if he did he made it out alive so everything's fine—
"—glad you made it home safe," Tomoki's saying, his voice breaking Yutaka out of his spiral, "Those Snimon looked really scary!"
"Yeah," Yutaka responds, for lack of anything else to say. Tomoki must have seen the attack on the news or something. Good thing he didn’t get caught up in that; for all that Yutaka’s brother had inexplicably matured in the past year, he was still a child.
(It isn't until he's settling down for bed that night, all of his study materials put away, that Yutaka realizes that Tomoki called the mantis by a name nobody else had mentioned.)

By the way, here is the final tally for who killed who in Vamdemon's invasion force.
Nanimon: Made good choices and got the fuck out of there before things really hit the fan.
Mammon: Killed in battle by Garudamon.
Gesomon: Killed in battle by Ikkakumon.
Raremon: Killed in battle by Kabuterimon.
DeathMeramon: Killed in battle by MetalGreymon.
Pumpmon: Executed by Vamdemon.
Gotsumon: Executed by Vamdemon.
DarkTyranomon: Executed by Vamdemon.
MegaSeadramon: Probably still out there somewhere.
Phantomon: Killed in battle by Angemon.
Tuskmon: Rudely team-killed by Vamdemon.
Snimon: Rudely team-killed by Vamdemon.
Dozens of Gizamon: Rudely team-killed by Vamdemon.
Dozens of Bakemon: Killed in battle by various Partner Digimon.
PicoDevimon: Rudely team-killed by Vamdemon.
Tailmon: Living her best life.
Wizarmon is not counted because, by his own admission, he was never really part of Vamdemon's invasion force to begin with. He pulled a sneaky sneakeroo.
Trying to determine which Partner Digimon did the most heavy lifting would be an exercise in trying to pick apart who killed who among the various Bakemon.
Nonetheless, it remains clear that the award for the true MVP in annihilating Vamdemon's forces goes to Vamdemon. Great job, Vamdemon!

Digi Dynamic Shipping Game
Send me two names among the following 12 and I’ll write a short analysis post about them:
Tumblr media
Taichi Yagami | Yamato Ishida | Sora Takenouchi | Koushirou Izumi | Mimi Tachikawa | Jyou Kidou | Takeru Takaishi | Hikari Yagami | Daisuke Motomiya | Miyako Inoue | Iori Hida | Ken Ichijouji
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whether canon provides input on them or not.
The first Adventure season is very adamant about making sure that the viewer identifies Sora as the "mom/big sister" friend of the group. This becomes mostly apparent when she is consistently protecting and/or taking care of Mimi and Hikari - but also Takeru. As I had pointed out in the post about the family angle between Sora, Yamato and Takeru, the latter functions as a bridge between the broken family dynamics they all appear to have at this point. Since Takeru is the youngest member of the group for the majority of the season, he is the most vocal about Sora basically being a motherly figure - which is even more blatantly stated in the English dub version where he straight up tells her that he doesn't "miss his mom so much" when she is around. And it makes sense that he perceives her that way, considering how she took everyone under their wing, including him, functioning as the voice of reason to prevent the others from fighting - especially when his brother is involved -, supporting them in the back however she could. And since Sora herself is struggling with her own sense of obligation, questioning her intentions and ability to love - is it really surprising that, the moment someone like Takeru finally reassures her, tells her that he likes her and doesn't want her to disappear, she immediately stops crying? Finding her composure again, regaining her positive outlook?
Both Sora and Takeru need validation, this becomes quite clear and is an ongoing theme between them through the course of Adventure - there is a reason why Takeru immediately becomes more serious and determined once Sora (and Taichi too) tells him to take care of and protect Hikari. He craves to be needed, he doesn't want to be a burden and actually being trusted by someone like Sora (and Taichi, again!), someone he greatly admires, is a huge boost for him. Maybe even the central motivation he needed (aside from Yamato's reassurance) to not give up, to "fulfill his responsibility", on his way to let Angemon evolve to HolyAngemon. Just like Takeru's words may have been a little stepping stone for Sora to activate her own Crest as well...
After Adventure, there aren't a lot of visible cues that indicate the same/a bigger level of closeness between these two (even taking into account that Sora and Yamato had been dating through the course of 02), but there are little tidbits here and there that do indicate care between them. It's when Takeru protects her from a Snimon attack in 02 (once again showing that he is responsible and protective!), it's when Sora calls him to ask whether he is okay in Tri (still showing off her caring attitude towards him!)...
One might argue that all of these framings are entirely familial, since there is so much focus on the family angle, especially when you keep the age gap of three years between them in mind. However, the reason why I chose the screenshot(s) above may indicate another meaning after all... Because similarly to my previous Daiora analysis, people tend to mainly focus on Sora's romantic potential with Taichi and Yamato - even though there may be other candidates who are potentially just as - if not more - emotionally compatible with her...
Whether I think why and how they’d work.
A famous callback Tri pulled on Adventure is the awkward silence between Sora, Taichi and Yamato in the fourth movie - mirroring the scene in which Sora runs away from the group, unable to tell them why she wanted to be by herself and why she considers herself "unable to love". In Tri, both Taichi and Yamato are at a loss, they have no idea how to deal with her. When they were still kids, all it took was for Takeru to approach her, thank, reassure and tell her that he "likes" her - which is probably why Yamato's instinct as a teenager at this point seems to be the following: "Shall we ask Takeru?"
Takeru, as opposed to his big band leader brother, has a so called "ladies-man-persona" in Tri, he's got a reputation of having dated several girls and appears to be very friendly with Meiko, much to Hikari's jealousy amusement. However, romance is not Tri's strongest feat - and just like we never learn whether or not Jyou's girlfriend is real, we also don't know what exactly Takeru has been doing all this time. He's famous for wearing a mask consisting of smiles and one may or may not be worried about him developing unhealthy dating habits that never result in long-lasting relationships....... OR we stop assuming the worst and take things at face value for once: Takeru Takaishi is a very kind person at heart, and even if he hides behind a mask, has a very big soft spot for reassuring girls around him.
Do you know who also has a soft spot for reassuring others while hiding their feelings behind a mask at times? Sora Takenouchi. They are both incredibly observant of the people around them and very keen to put them at ease, mostly through words - and just like we have seen above, they NEED that kind of validation. It's why Takeru notices that Sora got a new haircut and points it out to her, whereas his brother hadn't seen it at all. It's why Takeru tries to keep track on everything that is happening, not only because he's on his way to become a novelist, but because he cares and even if he probably still can't be honest about his own feelings - he knows that it doesn't hurt to notice and compliment others, he knows that he can make others feel good by being kind like that. Just like Sora is proooobably aware that her caring nature may not be the healthiest self-care approach, but at least puts smiles on everybody else's faces.
Again, this may not sound like the most stable foundation for a relationship, but I could actually see it working out for them. I'm not saying that I want them to "parent each other", but maybe together, they could reach a state where everything gets a little bit easier. Crying together, opening up to each other about how difficult it had been to always uphold that friendliness because they may have felt responsible, even if there were moments when they both would just have wanted to curse and scream... They both love their friends dearly, but may crave to allow themselves a shoulder to lean on. From someone who understands the struggles. I think it could be a great lesson for both of them as consenting adults, trying to live their own lives - having Sora tell Takeru that he doesn't always have to be the strong one to keep everyone together, that he is loved for who he is and that he won't be left again (because his abandonment issues may still be pretty strong). And simultaneously having Takeru tell Sora that she needs to look in the mirror to realize that she deserves to be loved for who she is as well (especially because her flight instinct might still be pretty strong). And that she deserves someone who actually TELLS her that...
Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship.
I had thought about Takeru as analogy to Yamato before, simply because he is so much more vocal towards Sora. And while the age gap and mother angle may make things a little bit difficult and even though I had never thought too deeply about the romantic side of Sokeru... I can understand why they used to have their niche here on tumblr. Art of Takeru protecting Sora for once ("I am not a kid anymore!"), art of him letting loose in front of her... The appeal is definitely there and I am a big fan of mutually reassuring ships, so while I usually go for them platonically, I do have a bit of a fondness for their romantic potential now! So it would be nice to see how their relationship may pan out in canon in "the future".

Digimon Frontier - Episode 5
Not gonna lie...this episode was kinda a snore fest lol. Just pretty forgettable all around. Oh well, at least we have all of the spirit evolutions now!
Notes:
I'm enjoying exploring a different digimon village every episode, it gives some of the background digimon time to shine. The Kokuwamon were cute and it was funny seeing baby Kokuwamon (still don't know how THAT works).
It seemed like they were going for a bug theme with the Kokuwamon, Minomon, and Snimon but then they stuck Goburimon in there too and it kinda threw things off? The Digimon franchise seems to slot in Goburimon when they need generic henchmen.
The Minomon had such cute voices in the sub but they were grating as heck in the dub. Funny seeing them play an antagonistic role.
This episode had a weird meta joke where they cut to a Kokuwamon saying "that's how it is" and the characters were like "that's how what is? You didn't explain anything" lol. It caught me off guard.
I get why they do it, but I was kinda sad when they did a split screen for 3 spirit digivolutions. It doesn't hit the same when everything's cropped and tiny.
Speaking of digivolution sequences, Junpei's was kind of disappointing. He does it with his back facing the camera for some reason? Tomoki's is still my fave for now.
Blitzmon's design is pretty similar to Agnimon's, just a jumble of colors and textures. I think this is just me not giving a hoot about mecha mostly. How am I supposed to connect with a robot whose face I can barely make out? His color scheme is nice I suppose.
When Junpei was fighting he suddenly pulled out some super sentai-like catchphrases outta nowhere. I thought they would have made a joke about him acting like a hero but it was played seriously -shrug-
The plot line of this episode felt very Japanese. The Kokuwamon are basically working for a black company with no bonuses/vacation/overtime pay lol. Poor things.
