Board Game Rec: Daybreak

I found Daybreak via Simon Clark, and it really does deliver. You can tell the people designing it understood the science, but it's not overly complicated. It's extremely well designed to teach, very tactile and visually appealing, with lots of cards and other design features to remind you how things work.

Gameplay wise, it's basically cooperative solitaire. You each have 5 active policies, which are on top of other policy stacks which power them. You can place new policy cards in front or behind. There are also collective policies and crises with similar rules. All gameplay revolves around the effects of these policies and crises, so the core rules are very simple, while the gameplay itself has lots of depth.

It's very realistic, and produced a lot of darkly humorous moments among us. The first time we played I was the US and I got a policy that allowed me to shut down my coal power. I got excited and did it without thinking, then realized later I no longer produced enough electricity to support my population. Rolling blackouts sent community after community into turmoil, completely destabilizing the country. While everyone else was doing great I was collapsing. Eventually environmental disasters drove me into collapse.

I narrated how American refugees flooded the rest of the world and supported Fascist movements that destroyed the world. The whole time we played I kept making jokes about how I caved to dogmatic degrowthers, and that's why the world collapsed.

The global crises are also very real. Fosil fuel lobbying hamstrings your efforts, drought and forest fires destroy your resources, and eco-fascist movements threaten your political stability. The game itself is made out of 100% biodegradable, low water-consumption materials. The thematic cohesion goes to the level of manufacturing.

The visual design is odd in a sometimes funny way. It's one of those products that feels like it came straight from design school following textbook principles. Everything is clean, clear, simple, and colorful. The visual appeal is nice, but a bit weird in the context of rapid climate collapse. (I guess if you win, it fits.) The "communities in crisis" pieces in particular are weird, because they're the stereotypical multicultural kumbaya icons, but they represent social collapse--literally the opposite of everyone living in harmony.

The cool thing is that every card is linked via a QR code to a page on their site where they explain the science, economics, and sociology of the idea behind the card. The whole thing is a giant educational tool. They really did integrate every avenue of design into one coherent whole. And it's actually fun to play!

John x Simone Appreciation Post #6

Glad Cutty and Simone talked after their fight. After hearing Simone out about the proposed garage conversion (she wants a separate living space with a private entrance for privacy reasons), Cutty called John over to discuss the project further. Per usual, the interaction between the three was hilariously entertaining :)

My wish for season 6 of The Rookie and season 2 of Rookie: Feds is to have Simone and John interact more. I freakin LOVE those two together.

I entirely supported the ban on smoking in public places, because forcing other people to breathe your smoke is wrong.

When I was a kid, I played in a school band, and playing in venues where people was smoking was truly horrific — to the point where the conductor started asking the people who were hosting us not to smoke when we were playing concerts)

So the public smoking ban was fine, and I think the complaints from the various smoking groups were more than a little ridiculous.

But this — this I think is taking it a little far.

I have no objection to new laws, or toughening up the laws, that stop children from buying and smoking cigarettes. They should be toughened up and enforced.

However we’ve seen what happened in the USA when alcohol became subject to prohibition — it went badly wrong, and went on to give rise to organised crime in a way that had never been seen before.

So if the government tries to do the same with cigarettes in the UK there is every chance the same could happen.

"Future generations of adults who are considered old enough to vote, pay taxes, drive a car and drink alcohol are going to be treated like children and denied the right to buy a product that can be purchased legally by people a year older than them."

As I said — I have no problem with laws to stop children from smoking. But stopping adults from smoking in private? Stopping someone who is thirty from buying cigarettes when someone who is thirty one can still buy them?

Yeah — it does seem more than a little ridiculous.

And at what point does it stop? 100? 150? As life expectancy increases is age going to increase? Will it just keep going up until the laws says “You have to be at least 1000 to buy cigarettes”?

Then what about carers?

If Miss Smith is 32, and looks after her father, who is 52, and the age limit is 40 what happens? Can Miss Smith get an exemption if she is buying them for her father — who is house bound and smokes — or is that illegal meaning that Mister Smith can no longer smoke either despite being twelve years older than the cut off age?

I admit I am digressing, but that was just something occurred to me.

To return to my main point — I don’t smoke. I don’t really approve of smoking — it is bad for you, and it will kill you.

But whether I approve of it or not is beside the point. I am not, nor should I be, the moral guardian of the country. I would be a terrible moral guardian of the country.

And this — this is just a terrible idea.

he is nothing without you, and he knows it all too well.

the soft jangle of your keys in the lock makes him look up from his journal, the door swinging open. and despite himself, he finds that he's softened underneath your warm, loving gaze. ah, he also misses the sound of your voice, euphonious and soft, a tone you use for him specifically.

he can feel his heart dance within his chest, pounding fiercely as you slant your hip to the side, the very same hips he adores holding onto when swaying with you to music. your eyes, which always seem to sweep him under with their intensity with no fail, are glittering with mirth, it knocks the breath from his chest. ❝ i adore you,❞ he utters— he sounds like a fool in love, and he doesn't particularly mind it. your cheeks flush with color and you playfully roll your eyes. that's alright, you don't need to say it back, he knows.

In the Justice League, Batman and Martian Manhunter are usually the first to notice, the former because he can read lips and the latter because he can telepathically sense the mischief.
